How to wind the watch?

You can wind the watch manually by turning the crown clockwise in position ①, or simply by wearing it (automatic winding).

How to set the time?

Pull the crown to position ② and turn it to the desired time. Make sure the displayed time is between 04:00-08:00 or 16:00-20:00 before setting the date.

How to set the moon phase?

Pull the crown to position ① and turn it until the moon reaches the desired phase (e.g., full moon). Use a lunar calendar to be precise.

How to set the date (day and month)?

Use the provided accessory to press the pusher at 9 o'clock. Each press advances the day and month. The eclipse indicator adjusts automatically.

What does the eclipse indicator mean?

The right subdial indicates whether a solar eclipse or lunar eclipse (total or partial) is occurring. The striped hand points to the eclipse. The red arrow shows whether the moon is at the ascending node (high) or descending node (low).

How to read the solar declination?

The hand at the top of the dial indicates the Earth's angle relative to the Sun (max 23.5° at summer solstice, min at winter solstice). This corresponds to the seasons.

Is the watch water resistant?

No, it is not water resistant. Avoid any contact with water, including rain, hand washing, or showering.

Can I replace the strap myself?

We recommend contacting an authorized dealer Christiaan van der Klaauw for replacement of the alligator strap.

What maintenance is needed?

When not wearing the watch, place it on a mechanical watch winder to keep the movement running. Wind it manually if it stops.

How to use the eclipse function?

Congratulations with your purchase of a Christiaan van der Klaauw Astronomical Watch. Christiaan van der Klaauw has been making superb watches - unique, exclusive and innovative - for more than 40 years. All these watches are made by hand by passionate watchmakers, with a central theme that appeals strongly to the imagination: astronomy. This is a logical relationship for Christiaan van der Klaauw - after all, time has always been determined on the basis of astronomical values. So we can justifiably state in connection with our watches: Astronomy, time in its purest form.

Your wristwatch is fitted with an automatic movement. When you wear your watch, the movements of your wrist are automatically converted into the energy required to operate your watch. You can also wind the watch by hand. If you do not wear the watch, we advise you to place it in a watch winder.

Turn clockwise.

Exposing our watches to water is not recommended. Your watch may be damaged if you wear it while swimming or in the shower.

Christiaan van der Klaauw Astronomical Watches are fitted with a strap made of alligator leather. This strap can be replaced. Contact an official dealer of Christiaan van der Klaauw Astronomical Watches if a replacement is required.

Adjustment

The settings of your watch can be adjusted by using the different positions of the crown and the push button Ⓓ.

The crown has three positions:

① this is the position of the crown when you are wearing the watch. In this position, you can wind the watch by hand.
① setting the moon phase.
② setting the time.

Before adjusting the settings of the Real Moon 1980, the time displayed on the watch must be between 04:00 and 08:00 or 16:00 and 20:00. Once this is the case,

use the enclosed accessory to push in the push button ⑦ located at the 9 o'clock position on the left-hand side of the watchcase. Push the button repeatedly to move the day and month indicators forward.

The eclipse indicator is linked to the day and month indicators and therefore moves forward automatically with these.

To then set the watch to the correct moon phase, carefully pull out the crown to position ①.

Turn the crown so that the moon globe starts to turn and continue until the correct moon phase is reached. Then pull out the crown as far as possible (position ②).

Now move the hands forward until the correct time is reached. When the hands show the right time, then push the crown in again completely.

Important

If you do not wear the watch, we advise you to place it in a watch winder. Turn clockwise.

Functionalities

① The moon phases are shown three dimensionally at the 6 o'clock position. If the Moon is completely black, then it is new moon. This is followed by the waxing moon up to the first quarter, with the right-hand side of the Moon visible. After that, the full moon is displayed, followed by the waning moon up to the last quarter, with the left-hand side of the Moon visible. The lunar cycle ends

with the new moon, and then starts again at the beginning.

⑤ The dial at the 3 o'clock position shows whether a total or partial solar or lunar eclipse is possible anywhere in the world. The eclipse hand is then vertical in the striped section. A solar eclipse only occurs if there is a new moon. A lunar eclipse only occurs if there is a full moon. If the eclipse occurs when the Moon is at the ascending node, the red arrow on the eclipse hand points upwards. If the Moon is at the descending node, the

red arrow on the eclipse hand points downwards.

The declination is shown at the 12 o'clock position. The Earth is at an angle of 23,5^ compared to the Sun. As a result of this axial tilt, the number of hours of sunlight varies, which is why we have seasons. The maximum value of the declination indicator is shown on the longest day (21 June). When the declination is lowest, this is the shortest day (21 December).
