This should also be done if the appliance has not been used for an extended period of time, and after descaling.
Making coffee - General information
- A measuring scale on the water container allows the container to be filled with the correct amount of clean water. The left scale is used for standard-sized cups of approx. 125ml , while the right scale is used for smaller cups.
- Make sure that the indicated maximum amount of water is not exceeded.
- If several consecutive brewing cycles are required, switch off the coffee maker after each cycle and let the appliance cool down for approx. 5 minutes.
- Important note: When filling the appliance with fresh
water shortly after a brewing cycle is completed, there is a danger of scalding from hot water or steam escaping through the water outlet.
Making coffee using whole beans
1. Filling with coffee beans:
Remove the lid of the bean container and fi ll it with a maximum of 100g of coffee beans. Replace the lid, pushing it firmly down.
2. Filling with water:
Remove the water container, open the lid and fill it with the desired quantity of water. Close the lid and replace the container.
Note: With this method, all the water will be used, and so the water should only be filled for the desired number of cups.
3. Inserting the paper fi Iter:
Open the swing-out filter sideways and insert a size-2 paper filter into the filter holder, first folding down the perforated sides of the filter. Place the filter ring on the filter insert and close the swing-out fi ler.
Hint: Instead of a paper filter, a permanent filter may also be used. However, a paper fi iter should be used when preparing the full 6 cups.
4. Preparing the glass carafe:
Replace the lid on the carafe, and then place it in the appliance. If correctly inserted, the lid will disable the drip-stop mechanism in the fi liter holder during the brewing cycle.
5. Connecting the appliance:

The appliance grinds the beans and the water starts passing through the fiiter.
9. Removing the glass carafe:
3 beep signals indicate that all the water has passed through the fiiter; the carafe may now be removed.
10. Keeping the coffee warm:
The coffee may be kept warm in the carafe by leaving it standing on the hot-plate, which remains hot for about 35 minutes after brewing is complete.
11. Interrupting the brewing/keeping-warm cycle:
To interrupt the grinding or brewing cycle, or if the keepingwarm function is not needed, use the button to turn the appliance off.
12. Switching off the coffee maker:
Once brewing/keeping-warm is complete, remove the plug from the wall socket.
Adjusting the grinding level
Note: To prevent damage to the grind mechanism, any such adjustments must be made during the grinding process.
Hint: For light-roasted beans, a fine grind level is recommended. For dark-roasted beans, a coarser level is better. Details of the roasting process are usually found on the coffee package.
- Prepare coffee as described in the section Making coffee using whole beans.
- While grinding is in progress, adjust the grinding level to the desired value.
- By turning the adjustment knob clockwise towards the small-bean symbol, a finer grind is achieved.
- Turning the knob anti-clockwise towards the large-bean symbol results in a coarser grind.

Cleaning and care
Dscaling
Depending on the water quality (lime content) in your area as well as the frequency of use, all thermal household appliances using hot water need descaling (i.e. removal of lime deposits) on a regular basis to warrant proper functioning.
- Any warranty claim will be null and void if the appliance malfunctions because of insufficient client descaling.
- A lengthening of the brewing time and increased noise during brewing indicate that descending of the coffee maker has become necessary.
- An excessive build-up of lime deposits is very difficult to remove, even when strong descending agents are used. It may also cause the brewing system to leak. We therefore strongly recommend descending the appliance after each thirty to forty brewing cycles.
For descending, a vinegar solution may be used as follows:
- Mix 40ml of vinegar essence with the indicated maximum amount of cold water.
- Pour the descending solution into the water container, insert a paper or permanent filter without adding any ground coffee, as described in section Using ground coffee, and let the appliance run through one filtration cycle. Repeat the procedure if necessary. During descending, ensure sufficient ventilation and do not inhale any vinegar vapours.
To clean the appliance after descaling, let it run through 2-3 filtration cycles using clean water only (see Cleaning and care /Flushing the unit).
Do not pour descalers down enamel sinks.
Cleaning
Before cleaning the appliance, ensure it is disconnected from the power supply and has cooled down completely.
- To avoid the risk of electric shock, do not clean the appliance with liquids or immerse it; do not clean under running tap water. The appliance may be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth, using a mild detergent. Wipe dry afterwards.
- Do not use abrasives or harsh cleaning solutions.
- To remove the used coffee grounds, open the swing-out filter, lift out the paper or permanent filter and dispose of the grounds (as a natural substance they may be composted). Wipe the inside of the swing-out fiiter with a damp cloth, dry it and close it again.
- The glass carafe, water container, filter ring and permanent filter may be cleaned with warm water after use. Wipe dry afterwards.
- Do not put the appliance or any of its accessory parts in a dishwasher.
Clean the bean container frequently with a damp cloth and allow to dry fully.
- The area around the ground-coffee/water outlet above the swing-out filter must be frequently cleaned of any coffee residues. Open the swing-out filter and use a soft brush to clean round the outlet.
If the container is removed with water still in it, there may be a slight return flow from the appliance. In such a case, the water emitted must be removed before the container is refi tted.
Flushing the unit
1. Filling with water:
Remove water container, open the lid and fi II in the maximum amount of cold water. Close the lid and replace the container.
2. Preparing the glass carafe:
Fit the lid on the carafe and place it into the appliance.
3. Connecting the appliance:
Insert the plug into the socket.
4. Starting the brewing cycle:
Press the end buttons to start the flushing process.
The water starts passing through.
5. Emptying the carafe:
Wait until all the water has passed through the fiiter and then empty the carafe. Repeat as necessary.
