English Safety Instructions General Power Tool Safety Warnings WARNING Read all safety warnings, instruc- tions, illustrations and specifica- tions provided with this power tool. Failure to follow all in- structions listed below may result in electric shock, fire and/ or serious injury. Save all warnings and instructions for future reference. The term "power tool" in the warnings refers to your mains- operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cord- less) power tool. Work area safety u Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents. u Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes. u Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control. Electrical safety u Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock. u Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded sur- faces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerat- ors. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded. u Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of elec- tric shock. u Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carry- ing, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock. Personal safety u Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as a dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal in- juries. u Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or en- ergising power tools that have the switch on invites acci- dents. u Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal in- jury. u Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations. u Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jew- ellery. Keep your hair and clothing away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts. u If devices are provided for the connection of dust ex- traction and collection facilities, ensure these are con- nected and properly used. Use of dust collection can re- duce dust-related hazards. u Do not let familiarity gained from frequent use of tools allow you to become complacent and ignore tool safety principles. A careless action can cause severe in- jury within a fraction of a second. Power tool use and care u Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was de- signed. u Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired. u Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or re- move the battery pack, if detachable, from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing ac- cessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally. u Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users. u Maintain power tools and accessories. Check for mis- alignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool’s operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools. u Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly main- tained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control. u Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into ac- count the working conditions and the work to be per- formed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation. u Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery handles and grasping surfaces do not allow for safe handling and control of the tool in unexpected situations. Battery tool use and care u Recharge only with the charger specified by the manu- facturer. A charger that is suitable for one type of bat- tery pack may create a risk of fire when used with another battery pack. u Use power tools only with specifically designated bat- tery packs. Use of any other battery packs may create a risk of injury and fire. u When battery pack is not in use, keep it away from other metal objects, like paper clips, coins, keys, nails, screws or other small metal objects, that can make a connection from one terminal to another. Shorting the battery terminals together may cause burns or a fire. u Under abusive conditions, liquid may be ejected from the battery; avoid contact. If contact accidentally oc- curs, flush with water. If liquid contacts eyes, addi- tionally seek medical help. Liquid ejected from the bat- tery may cause irritation or burns. u Do not use a battery pack or tool that is damaged or modified. Damaged or modified batteries may exhibit unpredictable behaviour resulting in fire, explosion or risk of injury. u Do not expose a battery pack or tool to fire or excess- ive temperature. Exposure to fire or temperature above 130°C may cause explosion. u Follow all charging instructions and do not charge the battery pack or tool outside the temperature range specified in the instructions. Charging improperly or at temperatures outside the specified range may damage the battery and increase the risk of fire. Service u Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained. u Never service damaged battery packs. Service of bat- tery packs should only be performed by the manufacturer or authorized service providers. Safety instructions for circular saws Cutting procedures u DANGER: Keep hands away from cutting area and the blade. If both hands are holding the saw, they cannot be cut by the blade. u Do not reach underneath the workpiece. The guard cannot protect you from the blade below the workpiece. u Adjust the cutting depth to the thickness of the work- piece. Less than a full tooth of the blade teeth should be visible below the workpiece. u Never hold the workpiece in your hands or across your leg while cutting. Secure the workpiece to a stable platform. It is important to support the work properly to minimise body exposure, blade binding, or loss of con- trol. u Hold the power tool by insulated gripping surfaces, when performing an operation where the cutting tool may contact hidden wiring. Contact with a "live" wire will also make exposed metal parts of the power tool "live" and could give the operator an electric shock. u When ripping always use a rip fence or straight edge guide. This improves the accuracy of cut and reduces the chance of blade binding. u Always use blades with correct size and shape (dia- mond versus round) of arbour holes. Blades that do not match the mounting hardware of the saw will run off- centre, causing loss of control. u Never use damaged or incorrect blade washers or bolt. The blade washers and bolt were specially designed for your saw, for optimum performance and safety of op- eration. Kickback causes and related warnings - kickback is a sudden reaction to a pinched, jammed or mis- aligned saw blade, causing an uncontrolled saw to lift up and out of the workpiece toward the operator; - when the blade is pinched or jammed tightly by the kerf closing down, the blade stalls and the motor reaction drives the unit rapidly back toward the operator; - if the blade becomes twisted or misaligned in the cut, the teeth at the back edge of the blade can dig into the top sur- face of the wood causing the blade to climb out of the kerf and jump back toward the operator. Kickback is the result of saw misuse and/or incorrect operat- ing procedures or conditions and can be avoided by taking proper precautions as given below. u Maintain a firm grip with both hands on the saw and position your arms to resist kickback forces. Position your body to either side of the blade, but not in line with the blade. Kickback could cause the saw to jump backwards, but kickback forces can be controlled by the operator, if proper precautions are taken. u When blade is binding, or when interrupting a cut for any reason, release the trigger and hold the saw mo- tionless in the material until the blade comes to a com- plete stop. Never attempt to remove the saw from the work or pull the saw backward while the blade is in motion or kickback may occur. Investigate and take cor- rective actions to eliminate the cause of blade binding. u When restarting a saw in the workpiece, centre the saw blade in the kerf so that the saw teeth are not en- gaged into the material. If a saw blade binds, it may walk up or kickback from the workpiece as the saw is restar- ted. u Support large panels to minimise the risk of blade pinching and kickback. Large panels tend to sag under their own weight. Supports must be placed under the panel on both sides, near the line of cut and near the edge of the panel. u Do not use dull or damaged blades. Unsharpened or im- properly set blades produce narrow kerf causing excess- ive friction, blade binding and kickback. u Blade depth and bevel adjusting locking levers must be tight and secure before making the cut. If blade ad- justment shifts while cutting, it may cause binding and kickback. u Use extra caution when sawing into existing walls or other blind areas. The protruding blade may cut objects that can cause kickback. Lower guard function u Check the lower guard for proper closing before each use. Do not operate the saw if the lower guard does not move freely and close instantly. Never clamp or tie the lower guard into the open position.If the saw is ac- cidentally dropped, the lower guard may be bent. Raise the lower guard with the retracting handle and make sure it moves freely and does not touch the blade or any other part, in all angles and depths of cut. u Check the operation of the lower guard spring. If the guard and the spring are not operating properly, they must be serviced before use. Lower guard may operate sluggishly due to damaged parts, gummy deposits, or a build-up of debris. u The lower guard may be retracted manually only for special cuts such as "plunge cuts" and "compound cuts”. Raise the lower guard by the retracting handle and as soon as the blade enters the material, the lower guard must be released.For all other sawing, the lower guard should operate automatically. u Always observe that the lower guard is covering the blade before placing the saw down on bench or floor.An unprotected, coasting blade will cause the saw to walk backwards, cutting whatever is in its path. Be aware of the time it takes for the blade to stop after switch is released. Additional safety warnings u Do not allow the chip ejector to come into contact with your hands. You may be injured by rotating parts. u Do not use the saw above the level of your head. Doing so will mean you have inadequate control of the power tool. u Use suitable detectors to determine if there are hid- den supply lines or contact the local utility company for assistance. Breaking water pipes causes property damage. u Hold the power tool firmly with both hands and make sure you have a stable footing. The power tool can be more securely guided with both hands. u Do not operate the power tool when stationary . It is not suitable for operation with a saw table. u When performing plunge cuts which are not right- angled, secure the guide plate of the saw so that it will not shift sideways.In the event of a sideways shift, the saw blade may become jammed, which could lead to kick- back. u Secure the workpiece. A workpiece clamped with clamping devices or in a vice is held more secure than by hand. u Always wait until the power tool has come to a com- plete stop before placing it down. The application tool can jam and cause you to lose control of the power tool. u Do not use HSS saw blades. Such saw blades can easily break. u Do not saw any ferrous metals. Hot chips may ignite the dust extractor. u Wear a dust mask.u In case of damage and improper use of the battery, va- pours may be emitted. The battery can set alight or ex- plode. Ensure the area is well ventilated and seek medical attention should you experience any adverse effects. The vapours may irritate the respiratory system. u Do not open the battery. There is a risk of short-circuit- ing. u The battery can be damaged by pointed objects such as nails or screwdrivers or by force applied externally. An internal short circuit may occur, causing the battery to burn, smoke, explode or overheat. u Only use the battery with products from the manufac- turer. This is the only way in which you can protect the battery against dangerous overload. Protect the battery against heat, e.g. against continuous intense sunlight, fire, dirt, water and moisture. There is a risk of explosion and short-circuiting. Product Description and Specifications Read all the safety and general instructions. Intended use The power tool is intended for making straight cuts in wood with and against the grain and mitre cuts in wood while rest- ing firmly against the workpiece. The vibration level and noise emission value given in these instructions have been measured in accordance with a standardised measuring procedure and may be used to com- pare power tools. They may also be used for a preliminary estimation of vibration and noise emissions. The stated vibration level and noise emission value repres- ent the main applications of the power tool. However, if the power tool is used for other applications, with different ac- cessories or is poorly maintained, the vibration level and noise emission value may differ. This may significantly in- crease the vibration and noise emissions over the total work- ing period. To estimate vibration and noise emissions accurately, the times when the tool is switched off or when it is running but not actually being used should also be taken into account. This may significantly reduce vibration and noise emissions over the total working period. Implement additional safety measures to protect the oper- ator from the effects of vibration, such as servicing the power tool and accessories, keeping their hands warm, and organising workflows correctly. Rechargeable battery Bosch sells some cordless power tools without a re- chargeable battery. Charging the battery u Use only the chargers listed in the technical data. Only these chargers are matched to the lithium-ion battery of your power tool. Note: Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries are supplied par- tially charged according to international transport regula- tions. To ensure full rechargeable battery capacity, fully charge the rechargeable battery before using your tool for the first time. Inserting the Battery Push the charged battery into the battery holder until it clicks into place. Removing the Battery To remove the rechargeable battery, press the battery re- lease button and pull the battery out. Do not use force to do this. The rechargeablebattery has two locking levels to prevent the battery from falling out if the battery releasebutton is pressed unintentionally. The rechargeable battery is held in place by a spring when fitted in the power tool. Battery charge indicator The green LEDs on the battery charge indicator indicate the state of charge of the battery. For safety reasons, it is only possible to check the state of charge when the power tool is not in operation. Press the button for the battery charge indicator or to show the state of charge. This is also possible when the bat- tery is removed. If no LED lights up after pressing the button for the battery charge indicator, then the battery is defective and must be replaced. Only store the battery within a temperature range of −20 to 50°C. Do not leave the battery in your car in the summer, for example. Occasionally clean the ventilation slots on the battery using a soft brush that is clean and dry. A significantly reduced operating time after charging indic- ates that the battery has deteriorated and must be replaced. Follow the instructions on correct disposal. Fitting u Only use saw blades that match the specifications given in this operating manual and that are tested and marked in accordance with EN 847-1 Inserting/changing the circular saw blade u Before carrying out any work on the power tool (e.g. maintenance, tool change etc.), remove the battery from the power tool. There is risk of injury from uninten- tionally pressing the on/off switch. u Wear protective gloves when fitting the saw blade. Danger of injury when touching the saw blade. u Only use saw blades that match the specifications given in this operating manual and that are tested and marked in accordance with EN 847-1 u The permitted speed of the application tool must be at least equal to the maximum speed marked on the power tool. If accessories run faster than their rated speed, they may break and fly off. u Do not use abrasive wheels as the application tool un- der any circumstances. Selecting the saw blade You will find an overview of recommended saw blades at the end of these operating instructions. Removing the saw blade (see figure A) To change tools, we recommend that you place the power tool down on the front side of the motor housing. – Press and hold the spindle lock button (5). u Do not press the spindle lock button (5) while the saw spindle is moving. The power tool may become damaged if this happens. – Use the hex key (3) to undo the clamping bolt (25) in ro- tational direction ➊. 1 609 92A 9F6 | (28.05.2024) Bosch Power ToolsEnglish | 21 – Swing the retracting blade guard (13) back and hold on to it firmly. – Remove the clamping flange (24) and the saw blade (23) from the saw spindle (21). Fitting the saw blade (see figure A) To change tools, we recommend that you place the power tool down on the front side of the motor housing. – Clean the saw blade (23) and all the clamping elements to be fitted. – Swing the retracting blade guard (13) back and hold on to it firmly. – Place the saw blade (23) on the mounting flange (22). The cutting direction of the teeth (direction of the arrow on the saw blade) must match the rotational direction of the arrow on the retracting blade guard (13). – Attach the clamping flange (24) and screw in the clamp- ing bolt (25) in rotational direction ➋. Ensure that the mounting flange (22) and clamping flange (24) are in- stalled in the correct position. – Press and hold the spindle lock button (5). – Use the hex key (3) to tighten the clamping bolt (25) in rotational direction ➋. The tightening torque should be 6–9Nm, which corresponds to hand-tight plus ¼ turn. Dust/chip extraction The dust from materials such as lead paint, some types of wood, minerals and metal can be harmful to human health. Touching or breathing in this dust can trigger allergic reac- tions and/or cause respiratory illnesses in the user or in people in the near vicinity. Certain dusts, such as oak or beech dust, are classified as carcinogenic, especially in conjunction with wood treatment additives (chromate, wood preservative). Materials contain- ing asbestos may only be machined by specialists. – Use a dust extraction system that is suitable for the ma- terial wherever possible. – Provide good ventilation at the workplace. – It is advisable to wear a P2 filter class breathing mask. The regulations on the material being machined that apply in the country of use must be observed. u Avoid dust accumulation at the workplace. Dust can easily ignite. Fitting the dust extraction adapter (see figure B) Push the dust extraction adapter (28) onto the chip ejector (16) until it clicks into place. Then secure the dust extraction adapter (28) in place with the screw (27). A dust extraction hose with a diameter of 35mm can be con- nected to the dust extraction adapter (28). u The dust extraction adapter must only be fitted if an external dust extraction system is connected. Other- wise the extraction duct can become clogged. u No dust bags should be connected to the dust extrac- tion adapter. Otherwise the extraction system can be- come clogged. To ensure optimum extraction, the dust extraction adapter (28) must be cleaned regularly. External dust extraction Connect the extraction hose (35) to a dust extractor (ac- cessory). You will find an overview of connecting to various dust extractors at the end of these operating instructions. The power tool can be directly connected to the socket of a Bosch all-purpose dust extractor with remote starter. This dust extractor is started up automatically when the power tool is switched on. The dust extractor must be suitable for the material being worked. When extracting dry dust that is especially detrimental to health or carcinogenic, use a special dust extractor. Operation u Before carrying out any work on the power tool (e.g. maintenance, tool change etc.), remove the battery from the power tool. There is risk of injury from uninten- tionally pressing the on/off switch. Operating modes Setting the cutting depth (see figure C) u Adapt the cutting depth to the thickness of the work- piece. A space of less than the height of one full tooth should be visible under the workpiece. Loosen the clamping lever (29). For a smaller cutting depth, pull the saw away from the base plate (6); for a larger cutting depth, push the saw towards the base plate (6). Adjust the desired cutting depth at the cutting-depth scale. Retighten the clamping lever (29). The clamping force of the clamping lever (29) can be read- justed. To do so, unscrew the clamping lever (29) and retighten it in a position offset by at least 30° in an anticlock- wise direction. Setting the mitre/bevel angle (GKS18V-57G) We recommend that you place the power tool down on the front side of the protective guard (17). Loosen the wing bolts (8) and (15). Swivel the saw to the side. Set the required mitre angle on the scale (9). Retighten the wing bolts (8) and (15). Note: When making mitre cuts, the cutting depth is less than the value shown on the cutting depth scale (30). Setting the mitre/bevel angle (GKS18V-57) We recommend that you place the power tool down on the front side of the protective guard (17). Loosen the wing bolts(8). Swivel the saw to the side. Set the required mitre/bevel angle on the scale(9). Retighten the wing bolts(8). Note: When making mitre cuts, the cutting depth is less than the value shown on the cutting depth scale (30).
