a chronometer is a high-precision instrument that has successfully passed the entire battery of tests imposed by the COSC (Swiss Official Chronometer testing institute), a neutral and independent body which individually tests each movement according to the prescriptions in force.
the certification test for wristwatch chronographs with quartz oscillators consists in observing each movement for 11 days and 11 nights, in several positions and at 3 different temperatures (8°C, 23°C, 38°C). to earn the prestigious chronometer label, a movement's performances must meet 7 very strict criteria, including a daily variation in rate of within ±0.07 seconds, corresponding to an annual precision of ±25 seconds. The variation in rate of the S UPer QUartzTM caliber fitted in your Breit Ling watch far and above exceeds these demands, achieving a rate of ±15 seconds a year.
the term "chronometer" should not be confused with that of "chronograph", which is a complicated watch fitted with an additional mechanism enabling the measurement of the duration of an event. a chronograph is not necessarily chronometer-certified, but all B re it Ling chronographs carry the much-coveted title of "chronometers".
PREPARING THE WATCH FOR USE
DATE ADJUSTMENT - TIME-SETTING
- Unscrew the water-resistant crown in an anti-clockwise direction.
- Pull the crown out to position 2 and turn the hours forwards to adjust the date which jumps at midnight.
- Pull the crown out further to position 3 and adjust the hour and minute.
- Push the crown back to position 1. Press it gently, turning it gently in a clockwise direction, then tighten it again until you feel some resistance. Do not force!

USING THE CHRONOGRAPH
I. MEASURING A SINGLE SHORT TIME
1. Press pushpiece A to start the chronograph. Hand 3 shows the measurement in seconds.
2. Stop the measurement by pressing pushpiece A once more. The measurement is done in hours (totalizer 1), minutes (hand 2), seconds (hand 3) and 1/10 of a second (totalizer 4).
3. r return the chronograph to zero by pressing pushpiece B.

II. MEASURING A SHORT TIME WITH SPLIT TIME
-
Press pushpiece A to start the chronograph. Hand 3 shows the measurement in seconds.
-
to check an intermediate or split time without interrupting measurement of the total time, press pushpiece B.
-
to return to the display of the time being measured, press pushpiece B: hand 3 measuring the seconds, and if necessary hand 2 measuring the minutes, will then "catch u p" with the measured time.

ADJUSTING ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
if a totalizer hand does not return to zero normally (after a battery change or inappropriate handling), proceed in the following manner:
-
Desynchronized hour totalizer: with the crown in position 2, press pushpiece A repeatedly until the hand returns to the initial position.
-
Desynchronized minute totalizer: with the crown in position 2, press pushpiece B repeatedly until the hand returns to the initial position.
-
Desynchronized seconds totalizer: with the crown in position 3, press pushpiece A repeatedly until the hand returns to the initial position.
-
Desynchronized 1/10th of a second totalizer: with the crown in position 3, press pushpiece B repeatedly until the hand returns to the initial position.

SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS

YACHTING FUNCTION
the Yachting version of your chronograph features a countdown device for regatta departures. a t the sound of the cannon indicating the 10 minutes remaining before the departure, starting the chrono - graph by means of pushpiece A enables you to follow the countdown thanks to the minute hand 2 which moves through the colored zone running from 10 to 12 o'clock. t he seconds hand 3 allows you to follow even more precisely the final few seconds prior to departure.

DECOMPRESSION VALVE
to avoid a potential explosion when returning to the surface, the case of your Breit Ling chronometer is fitted with a decompression valve that vents the gases – mostly helium – that accumulate in the case during prolonged immersion at great depths.

RIDER-TAB BEZEL
the bezel of your watch is fitted with 4 hour-markers called rider-tabs: they are used as points of reference to mark the time of departure or a limit time one wishes to remember. On models with no chronograph functions, they also serve as "minute chrono-graph" enabling one to measure time elapsed in minutes.
rider-tabs make it easier to rotate the bezel by giving a better grip (especially when wearing gloves) and additionally protect the glass.

SUN COMPASS
Your Breit Ling chronometer may be used as a sun compass, thus enabling you to determine the n ortherly-Southerly direction. For regions that have instated daylight saving time, subtract one hour when directing the watch.
In the Northern hemisphere
Point the hour hand precisely towards the sun. in relation to the watch dial, the point located midway between the current time and 12 o'clock in . indicates the South, the north being exactly opposite.
In the Southern hemisphere
Point the hour-marker located at 12 o'clock on the dial precisely towards the sun. in relation to the watch dial, the point located midway between the current time and 12 o'clock indicates the north, the South being exactly opposite.

1/100th OF AN HOUR DIAL DISPLAY
Your Breit Ling chronometer is equipped with a scale dividing the hour into hundredths, thus making it easier to read off the minutes on a decimal base.
E.g.: 0.6h = 36minutes.

QUICK TIME-ZONE CHANGE
Your Breit Ling chronometer is equipped with an hour hand enabling quick time-zone change. t he latter may be adjusted in one-hourly increments, either forward or back.

-
Unscrew the water-resistant crown in an anti-clockwise direction and pull it out to position 2. Forwards or backwards adjustment of the time, as well as the date change at midnight, is done without affecting the rating or precision of the minutes and seconds.
-
a fter this process, carefully tighten the water-resistant crown again.

WATER-RESISTANT PUSHPIECES
Your Breitling chronograph is equipped with magnetic pushpieces, a patented Breitling proprietary device which enables you to activate the chronograph controls without any direct contact between the pushpiece and the movement. The chronograph functions are guaranteed up to the depth indicated on the caseback.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Used batteries and used watch components should not be disposed in litters, but correctly recycled according to local regulations. We recommend the disposal of such parts via your watch dealer. You will thereby contribute to environmental and public health protection.

MAINTENANCE
Your Breit Ling chronometer is a sophisticated instrument which is constantly subjected to a wide variety of stresses and strains. Within a very small volume, a large number of components contribute to handling all the functions. t heir mechanical action inevitably leads to a certain amount of wear and tear, which may be controlled by maintenance consisting of renewing the lubrication and replacing worn components. Like any precision measurement instrument, your watch must be regularly maintained in order to function at its highest level of potential: we recommend a regular service every two years, while the complete overhaul should be scheduled about every five years. Your authorized B reit Ling dealer will be pleased to handle this for you.
WATER-RESISTANCE
the movement of your chronometer is protected by a complex case fitted with gaskets to ensure its water-resistance. Under the influence of various external agents – perspiration, chlorinated or salt water, cosmetics, fragrances or dust – these gaskets gradually deteriorate and must be regularly replaced. if used intensively in water, we recommend that this be done once a year as part of a service. if the watch is only occasional y used in water, this operation may be carried out every two years. Moreover, a
water-resistance test should be done every year; it takes only a few minutes and can be performed by your authorized B re it Ling dealer.
Breit Ling models are water-resistant to varying degrees. The extent of the water-resistance, expressed in meters (M) is a standard value and does not indicate an absolute depth of immersion. The crown must not under any circumstances be operated under water or when the watch is wet. The table below indicates the conditions in which your watch may reasonably be used, according to its degree of water-resistance.
| ACTIVITIES / DEGREE OF WATER-RESISTANCE | 3bars/30M/100FT 5bars/50M/16FT 10bars/10 | 1M/330FT 50bars/500M | 1,650FT+ |

USEFUL TIPS
Breit Ling genuine leather straps are crafted with the most refined materials and represent extremely high-quality products. Like all objects in natural skin (shoes, gloves, etc.), their length of life varies considerably, according to the conditions i n which they are worn. in particular, water, cosmetics and
perspiration accelerate the aging process. a metal or synthetic B reit Ling bracelet is thus better suited to activities involving frequent contact with water or humidity.
Breit Ling metal cases and bracelets are made from the finest alloys and guarantee sturdiness and wearer comfort. r egular cleaning by rinsing and brushing in clear water will keep your watch shiny. t his operation is strongly recommended after each immersion in salty or chlorinated water. For watches fitted with a leather strap, proceed in the same manner, while avoiding getting the strap wet.
WHAT TO AVOID
Like any valuable objects, B reit Ling chronometers deserve special care. it is important to protect them from jarring and knocks by hard objects, and not to expose them to chemical products, solvents, dangerous gases, or magnetic fields. Moreover, your Breit Ling chronometer is designed to run smoothly at temperatures ranging between 0°C and 50°C.
