4 Starting up for the rst time
When starting the appliance for the rst time, please carry out the following steps.
When you have completed these steps, the appliance is ready for operation. You
can now prepare coffee.

4.3 Filling the bean container

5 Switching on and off
5.1 Switching on the appliance
The appliance performs an automatic rinse every time it is switched on.

7 Preparing espresso or café crème
Prerequisite: The appliance must be ready for operation (see „Switching on
and off“ on page 56).

• Turn the coffee quantity regulator (Fig. A, no. 4) to adjust the dispensed

8 Preparing milk froth

10 Dispensing hot water

11 Function settings
Use the test strip provided to determine the water hardness in your area. Comply
with the instructions on the test strip package. The appliance is factory-adjusted
to water hardness 4. If you have inserted the Melitta
hardness 1 is set automatically (see page 57)

11.2 Energy-saving mode
After the last action, the appliance automatically (depending on the settings)
switches to energy-saving mode (the appliance thus consumes much less energy
than in stand-by mode). You can set different times for the energy-saving mode.
The appliance is factory-set at 5 minutes

11.3 Auto-off function
The device switches off automatically after the last action (depending on the
setting). You can set different times for the auto-OFF function. The appliance is
factory-set at 1 hour

11.4 Brewing temperature
The brewing temperature is factory-set at level 2 (medium

11.5 Resetting the appliance to the default settings
Prerequisite: The appliance must be ready for operation (see „Switching on
and off“ on page 56).

11.6 Grinding neness
The grinding neness level was optimally adjusted prior to delivery. Consequently,
we recommend that you only readjust grinding neness after dispensing
approximately 1,000 coffees (about 1 year).
You can only set the grinding neness while the mill is running. Thus, adjust
grinding neness directly after coffee dispensing starts.
If the coffee avour is not sufciently intense, we recommend that you set a ner

No. 14) and pull off the cover to the right.
• Start a normal coffee dispensing process.
• While the grinder is running: Place the lever in one of the three

12 Care and maintenance
12.1 General cleaning
• Clean the outside of the appliance with a soft, damp cloth and ordinary
• Empty and clean the drip tray (Fig. A, no. 1) regularly; at the latest,
however, when the fl oat projects out of the cup plate.
• Clean the coffee grounds container regularly.
– To avoid damage to the appliance surface, do not use scouring cloths,
sponges or cleaning products.
– Do not clean the drip tray in the dishwasher; this could cause deformation.

washed in the dishwasher. Frequent washing in the dishwasher can cause
slight discolorations on the coffee grounds container.ENGLISH
12.2 Cleaning the brewing unit
Prerequisite: The appliance must be switched off (see „Switching on and off“
For optimal protection of your appliance, we recommend that you clean the
brewing unit under running tap water once a week.
• Reach into the recess on the right side of the appliance (Fig. A, no. 14)
and pull off the cover to the right.
• Press and hold the red button on the handle of the brewing unit (Fig. B,
No. 1) and turn the handle clockwise to the stop (by about 75°).
• Use the handle to pull the brewing unit out of the appliance.
• Leave the brewing unit as it is (do not move or twist the components of

12.3 Cleaning the Cappuccinatore
We recommend that you clean the Cappuccinatore once a week with the milk
system cleaning agent from Melitta
for fully automatic coffee makers.
Proceed as described on page 61 under „Rinsing the Cappuccinatore“ and use
the milk cleaner solution instead of clear water.
• Always clean the Cappuccinatore immediately after use if it has been
used to heat or froth milk.
• Wait until the Cappuccinatore has cooled down and wipe it on the
outside with a damp cloth.
• For thorough daily cleaning, pull the Cappuccinatore (Fig. A, No. 13) off
of the steam pipe (Fig. A, No. 12) and take it apart (Fig. F).
• To do so, remove the milk hose, the milk froth / hot water nozzle (Fig. F,
No. 6) and the air intake pipe (Fig. F, No. 2) from the connecting piece
• Rinse all of the parts under running water. Clean the air intake pipe
• Put the Cappuccinatore back together in the reverse order.

The integrated descaling programme removes limescale in the interior of the
appliance. It requires a total of approximately 30 minutes. The symbol for descaling

13.1 Preparation for transport, protection against freezing
and measures for longer periods of non-use

We recommend that you vent the appliance if it will not be used for an extended
period of time and before transport. This also protects the appliance against frost
