How do I set up my AMILO Xi 3650 for the first time?

Unpack the notebook and check for damage. Place it on a flat and stable surface. Connect the power adapter (first to the notebook, then to the wall outlet). Press the power switch. Follow the on-screen instructions for initial setup (this may take up to 20 minutes). Do not turn off the notebook during this process.

How do I switch between energy-saving mode and graphics performance mode?

Press the Hybrid VGA quick start button located on the multimedia panel. Each press toggles between energy-saving mode (integrated graphics) and performance mode (external graphics). Performance mode is preset by default.

What should I do if the screen remains black at startup?

This may be normal during initial setup or after a RAID modification. Wait a few moments. If the screen remains black, check that the power adapter is properly connected and the power LED is lit. If the problem persists, refer to the troubleshooting section of the manual.

Can I use an external SATA hard drive?

Yes, the notebook has a combined eSATA/USB port that allows you to connect an external SATA hard drive or a USB device.

How do I configure RAID with two hard drives?

RAID configuration requires the installation of two hard drives. The operation must be carried out by a Fujitsu authorized service. Use the Intel® Matrix Storage Manager software to configure RAID levels (e.g., RAID 0 or RAID 1). The setup may take several hours.

What is the battery life?

Battery life depends on usage and power saving settings. With the 8-cell battery and in energy-saving mode, battery life can reach several hours. Use the integrated graphics mode to maximize battery life.

Where can I find drivers for Windows Vista?

Drivers for Windows Vista are available on the Fujitsu Siemens Computers website: www.fujitsu-siemens.com/support. The factory configuration only supports Windows Vista.

Is it normal for the notebook to get hot?

During operation, the bottom of the notebook may get hot. This is normal. Ensure that the ventilation openings are not blocked and place the notebook on a hard surface. Prolonged contact with skin may be uncomfortable.

Can I connect a TV via HDMI?

Yes, the HDMI port can transmit digital audio and video signals to a TV in Full HD resolution. To use this port, the external graphics (performance) mode must be activated.

How do I use the multimedia remote control?

The multimedia remote control stores in the ExpressCard slot. Use it to control media playback, volume, etc. Ensure that the infrared interface (remote control) is unobstructed.

Hybridgraphics

Yournotebookisequippedwithahybridgraphicssystem.ByclickingtheQuickStart button, you can switch between battery-saver and performance mode.

Usethegraphicsunitintegratedinthechipsetforapplicationswhichare less graphics-intensive, such as video playback, e-mail and Internet surfing. This reduces heat generation, noise levels and power consumption. Asa result, battery life is increased (battery savermode).

If you require a high-level of performance, forexample, forgames, you can switch to the external graphics unit (performance mode).

In your notebook, the external graphics mode is preconfigured ex works (performance mode).

RAID(RedundantArrayofIndependentDisks,also:DiskArray)isaprocedurefor combiningtwharddiskstocreatealogicalunit.

A so-called disk array can be used advantageously to improve performance or alternatively to improve error tolerance (dataprotection).

Errortoleranceisfacilitatedbymeansofdataredundancy.Ifonedrivemalfunctions, adifferentdrivecontainsanexactcopyofthedata.Thisscanpreventanoperating systemfrommalfunctioningordatafrombeinglost.

Theoperatingsystemdetectsallharddisksinadiskarraysasasinglephysical hard disk. The individual disk drives in a disk array are called "members". Member configuration information is recorded in the reserved sector of the hard disk. With this information the hard disk can be identified as a member.

Thereareusuallyafewmethodsbywhichharddiskscanbecombined.Thesemethods areereferredtoasdifferentRAIDlevels. ThedifferentRAIDlevelsrepresentdifferent performanceandsecuritylevelsaswellasimplementationcosts.

Depending on the size of the hard disk, the process for combining two hard drives creates a RAID group that takes several hours. During this time period, your screen will turn black.

Preparing your notebook for use

If your notebook comes with a Windows operating system then allofthenecessary hardware drivers and the supplied software will already be pre-installed.

WiththeoperatingsystemMicrosoftVista, it may take up 20 minute stop prepare your notebook for use depending on the hardware fitted and the software supplied.

When you switch on the notebook for the first time it will perform a system check. Anumberofdifferentmessagesmaybedisplayed. Intheprocess, thedisplaymayflickerordarkentemporarily.

Pleasefollowtheinstructionsontheshcreen.

Itisveryimportantthatyoudonotswitchthenotebookoffduringthisinitialset-upprocess.

Before you can use your notebook for the first time you will need to charge the battery.

Ondelivery, the battery can be found in the battery compartment mentor in the accessorieskit. The battery must be charged if you want to operate your notebook with the battery.

Whennotpluggedintoamainsssocket,thenotepadrunsonitsbuilt-inbattery.Youcan increasethebattery'slifebyenablingthesystem'senergysavingfunctions.

If you use the notebook inathomeorinanoffice, werecommendyou use themainsadapter instead of the battery.
