Frequently Asked Questions - DSC-HX50V SONY

How to charge the battery of the Sony DSC-HX50V?
Use the supplied AC adapter AC-UB10 and micro-USB cable. Plug the adapter into a wall outlet, then connect the camera turned off. The orange indicator lights up during charging; it goes off when charging is complete (about 230 minutes).
Which memory card to use with the camera?
The camera accepts Memory Stick PRO Duo, SD/SDHC/SDXC (Class 4 or higher for videos), and microSD (with adapter). For AVCHD movies, use a high-speed card.
How to activate GPS on the HX50V?
Go to the Settings menu > GPS Settings and select On. To save battery, disable it when not in use. Note that GPS usage may be regulated in some countries.
What is the battery life?
Approximately 400 shots (CIPA standard) or 200 minutes in normal shooting. In continuous movie recording, about 90 minutes. Battery life decreases with GPS activated or high-resolution screen.
How to transfer photos to a smartphone?
Use the Send to smartphone function in the menu. Install the PlayMemories Mobile app on your smartphone, then connect to the camera's Wi-Fi. You can then transfer images and control the camera remotely.
What to do if the camera does not turn on?
Check that the battery is properly inserted and charged. If the charge indicator flashes, the temperature is out of range (10-30 °C). Try removing and reinserting the battery. If the problem persists, contact Sony support.
How to clean the LCD screen?
Use a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners. If fingerprints persist, slightly dampen the cloth with water. Do not press too hard to avoid damaging the coating.
Can I use the camera continuously for recording?
Yes, but the maximum recording time for a single clip is about 29 minutes (AVCHD) or 15 minutes (MP4). The camera may heat up; if the overheating protection activates, let it cool down before recording again.
How to reset the camera settings?
Go to the Settings menu > Initialize > All settings. This erases all custom settings. To protect your data, also format the internal memory before giving away the camera.

What does the "remaining shots" indicator mean on the Sony DSC-HX50V camera screen?
Frequently Asked Questions - 16/02/2026
Response Notice-Facile

The "remaining shots" indicator displayed on your Sony DSC-HX50V camera screen shows the estimated number of photos you can still take with the inserted memory card.

How is this number calculated?

  • Memory card capacity: The larger the capacity of the card (measured in GB), the more photos you can store.
  • Image resolution and quality: Photos taken in high resolution or maximum quality take up more space, reducing the total number of remaining shots.
  • Image format: RAW or uncompressed files are larger than compressed JPEG files, thus impacting the remaining capacity.

In summary, this indicator informs you of the number of photos you can still capture before the memory card is full, based on the current shooting settings.

Respond (be the first)
How can I find out the number of shutter actuations of the Sony DSC-HX50V?
Frequently Asked Questions - 16/02/2026
Response Notice-Facile

The Sony DSC-HX50V does not have a function to know the number of shutter actuations (shutter count) of the device. Unlike some professional cameras or certain newer Sony models, this compact does not store this information in the EXIF metadata of its photos, making it impossible to extract the number of actuations via software or online services.

Since the DSC-HX50V only records in JPEG format (without the possibility of RAW mode), and without the integration of the shutter count in the file data, there is no reliable method to check this data afterwards. Online specialized tools or software like ShutterCount or ExifTool will not be able to extract this information for this specific model, as it is simply not recorded.

Alternatives to assess the wear of the device: You can contact Sony customer service with your serial number and proof of purchase to know the previous usage conditions. A visual inspection of the casing and performance can also provide clues about the age and intensive use of the device. Check the condition of the flash, buttons, LCD screen, and 30x optical zoom for any signs of wear.

Number of still images and recordable time of movies

The number of still images and recordable time may vary depending on the shooting conditions and the memory card.

Movies

The table below shows the approximate maximum recording times. These are the total times for all movie files. Continuous shooting is possible for approximately 29 minutes (a product specification limit). The maximum continuous recording time of an MP4 (12M) format movie is about 15 minutes (limited by the 2 GB file size restriction).

(h (hour), m (minute))

Capacity SizeInternal memoryMemory card
Approx. 48 MB2 GB
AVC HD 28M (PS)8 m (8 m)
AVC HD 24M (FX)10 m (10 m)
AVC HD 9M (HQ)25 m (15 m)
MP4 12M15 m
MP4 3M1 h 10 m

The number in () is the minimum recordable time.
- The recordable time of movies varies because the camera is equipped with VBR (Variable Bit Rate), which automatically adjusts image quality depending on the shooting scene. When you record a fast-moving subject, the image is clearer but the recordable time is shorter because more memory is required for recording.

The recordable time also varies depending on the shooting conditions, the subject or the image quality/size settings.

Notes on using the camera

Functions built into this camera

  • This manual describes each of the functions of 1080 60i-compatible devices and 1080 50i-compatible devices.

  • To determine whether your camera supports the GPS function, check the model name of your camera.

GPS-compatible: DSC-HX50V

GPS-incompatible: DSC-HX50

  • To check if your camera is a 1080 60i-compatible device or 1080 50i-compatible device, check for the following marks on the bottom of the camera.

1080 60i-compatible device: 60i

1080 50i-compatible device: 50i

  • This camera is compatible with 1080 60p or 50p-format movies. Unlike standard recording modes up to now, which record in an interlacing method, this camera records using a progressive method. This increases the resolution, and provides a smoother, more realistic image.
  • While abroad an airplane, set [Airplane Mode] to [On] (DSC-HX50V only).
  • Do not watch 3D images shot with this camera for extended periods of time on 3D-compatible monitors.
  • When you view 3D images shot with this camera on a 3D-compatible monitor, you may experience discomfort in the form of eye strain, fatigue, or nausea. To prevent these symptoms, we recommend that you take regular breaks. However, you need to determine for yourself the length and frequency of breaks you require, as they vary according to the individual. If you experience any type of discomfort, stop viewing the 3D images until you feel better, and consult a physician as necessary. Also refer to the operating instructions supplied with the device or software you have connected or are using with this camera. Note that a child's eyesight is still at the development stage (particularly children below the age of 6). Consult a pediatrician or ophthalmologist before letting your child view 3D images, and make sure he/she observes the above precautions when viewing such images.

On GPS-compatible devices (DSC-HX50V only)

  • Use GPS in accordance with regulations of countries and regions where you use it.
  • If you do not record the location information, set [GPS setting] to [Off].

On use and care

Avoid rough handling, disassembling, modifying, physical shock, or impact such as hammering, dropping, or stepping on the product. Be particularly careful of the lens.

Notes on recording/playback

  • Before you start recording, make a trial recording to make sure that the camera is working correctly.
  • The camera is neither dust-proof, nor splash-proof, nor water-proof.
  • Avoid exposing the camera to water. If water enters inside the camera, a malfunction may occur. In some cases, the camera cannot be repaired.
  • Do not aim the camera at the sun or other bright light. It may cause the malfunction of the camera.
  • If moisture condensation occurs, remove it before using the camera.
  • Do not shake or strike the camera. It may cause a malfunction and you may not be able to record images. Furthermore, the recording media may become unusable or image data may be damaged.

Do not use/store the camera in the following places

  • In an extremely hot, cold or humid place
In places such as in a car parked in the sun, the camera body may become deformed and this may cause a malfunction.
  • Under direct sunlight or near a heater
The camera body may become discolored or deformed, and this may cause a malfunction.
  • In a location subject to rocking vibration
  • Near a location that generates strong radio waves, emits radiation or is strongly magnetic place. Otherwise, the camera may not properly record or play back images.
  • In sandy or dusty places

Be careful not to let sand or dust get into the camera. This may cause the camera to malfunction, and in some cases this malfunction cannot be repaired.

Notes on the screen and lens

The screen is manufactured using extremely high-precision technology so over 99.99% of the pixels are operational for effective use. However, some tiny black and/or bright dots (white, red, blue or green) may appear on the screen. These dots are a normal result of the manufacturing process, and do not affect the recording.

On camera's temperature

Your camera and battery may get hot due to continuous use, but it is not a malfunction.

On the overheat protection

Depending on the camera and battery temperature, you may be unable to record movies or the power may turn off automatically to protect the camera.

A message will be displayed on the screen before the power turns off or you can no longer record movies. In this case, leave the power off and wait until the camera and battery temperature goes down. If you turn on the power without letting the camera and battery cool enough, the power may turn off again or you may be unable to record movies.

On charging the battery

If you charge a battery that has not been used for a long time, you may be unable to charge it to the proper capacity.

This is due to the battery characteristics, and is not a malfunction. Charge the battery again.

Television programs, films, videotapes, and other materials may be copyrighted. Unauthorized recording of such materials may be contrary to the provisions of the copyright laws.

No compensation for damaged content or recording failure

Sony cannot compensate for failure to record or loss or damage of recorded content due to a malfunction of the camera or recording media, etc.

Cleaning the camera surface

Clean the camera surface with a soft cloth slightly moistened with water, then wipe the surface with a dry cloth. To prevent damage to the finish or casing:

  • Do not expose the camera to chemical products such as thinner, benzine, alcohol, disposable cloths, insect repellent, sunscreen or insecticide.

Maintaining the screen

  • Hand cream or moisturizer left on the screen may dissolve its coating. If you get any on the screen, wipe it off immediately.
  • Wiping forcefully with tissue paper or other materials can damage the coating.
  • If fingerprints or debris are stuck to the screen, we recommend that you gently remove any debris and then wipe the screen clean with a soft cloth.

Note on wireless LAN

We assume no responsibility whatsoever for any damage caused by unauthorized access to, or unauthorized use of, destinations loaded on the camera, resulting from loss or theft.

Note on disposal/transfer of the camera

To protect personal data, perform the following when disposing of or transferring the camera.

  • Format the internal memory (page 26), record images up to full capacity of the internal memory with the lens covered, and then format the internal memory again.
This will make it difficult to recover any of your original data.
  • Reset all camera settings by performing [Initialize] [All settings] (page 26).
