How to switch between USB and LAN modes?

Press and hold the Mode button for a few seconds, then release. The LED changes color: green for LAN mode, red for USB mode. Important: never press this button during a data transfer.

What does the color of the indicator light (green/red) mean?

Green light indicates the drive is in LAN (NAS) mode. Red light indicates USB mode (simple external drive). If the light is flashing, it means the computer is accessing the drive.

How to install the drive under Windows?

Insert the DriveNavigator installation CD into the drive. The program starts automatically. Follow the wizard: choose Install for a USB connection or Share data by LAN for a network connection. The wizard will guide you first in USB mode, then in LAN mode.

Can I use the drive without the installation CD?

If you have lost the CD, you can download the software from the Buffalo website. Without the software, the drive will only work in basic USB mode. LAN mode requires installation of the provided NAS driver.

How to access the drive in network (LAN) mode?

After installation, an icon BrowseHD-CELU2-XXX appears on the desktop. Click on it to directly access the main folder of the drive. You can also access it via Windows Explorer by entering the drive's IP address.

What are the maximum transfer speeds?

In USB 2.0 mode, the speed reaches 480 Mbps. In Ethernet mode, it is limited to 100 Mbps (10/100 Base-T). Actual performance depends on your network and configuration.

Is the drive compatible with Mac?

The documentation only mentions Windows 2000, XP, and Vista. No Mac compatibility is indicated. However, in USB mode, a Mac might recognize it as a standard drive, but the provided software is exclusively for Windows. In LAN mode, access via SMB might work.

What to do if the indicator light does not change color?

Check that the drive is powered on (power adapter plugged in). Press and hold the Mode button for at least 5 seconds. If nothing happens, unplug the power, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in. If the problem persists, contact Buffalo support.

Can I connect the drive directly to my computer via the LAN port?

No, it is not recommended to connect the drive directly to a PC via the Ethernet port. The drive must be connected to a router or existing network to work in LAN mode. A direct connection will not work even after installation.

Can the drive serve as a NAS without being connected to a router?

No, NAS (LAN) mode requires a connection to a local network with a router or switch. Without a network, the drive can only be used in USB mode. For NAS use, plug it into your router via the Ethernet cable.

Note: The DriveStation can be connected to a computer as both an Ethernet NAS and a USB external hard drive at the same time. To switch between the two modes, hold down the mode button for a few seconds and then release it.

Insert the installation CD into your PC's CD-ROM drive. Setup will automatically launch. Click on Begin Installation.

If you connect the drive via USB, click Install.

If you use LAN port on the drive, click Share data by LAN.

The wizard will guide you through installation. First, you'll install the DriveStation as a USB device. Then, you'll switch modes and install the DriveStation in LAN mode as a NAS device. Follow the directions on each screen and continue pressing Next to step through the installation.

When installation is complete, you may close the installation window.

In LAN mode, the mode button will glow green. If it's red, hold it in for a few seconds, and then release it. The LED will change to green.

After running the installation wizard, this icon will be on your desktop: BrowseHD-CELU2-XXX.

In LAN mode, clicking BrowseHD-CELU2-XXX takes you directly to the main folder on your DriveStation.

note: Connect DriveStation to a router or an existing network.If connecting DriveStation directly to your PC, you cannot use it via LAN although the setup wizard is complete.

In USB mode, the DriveStation functions as a normal external USB hard drive. It can be accessed from My Computer. By default, it will receive the next available drive letter and will be named HD-CELU2.

note: DO NOT press the mode button while you are transferring the data. Otherwise the data may be corrupted or lost depending on your PC configuration.
