  • Make sure that the appliance is installed in compliance with all applicable national safety standards. In particular make sure that the appliance is efficiently earthed.
  • Check that the appliance has not been damaged in transit. If any damage is visible, report it to the transporter immediately.
  • Make sure that the voltage and frequency of the mains electricity supply correspond to the specifications on the appliance. Also make sure that the mains supply has sufficient installed power for the appliance to operate simultaneously with any other electrical appliances that might be connected to the same power line.
  • The manufacturer declines all responsibility for damage or injury caused by unauthorised modifications to the appliance or incorrect electrical or coolant connections. Failure to observe the instructions given in this manual or use of the appliance in conditions other than those specified in the "Operating Limitations" table in the appliance's installation manual automatically invalidates the warranty.
  • Only use the appliance for the purpose for which it is intended. The indoor unit is not suitable for use in washrooms.
  • Do not use the appliance if it is damaged. In the event of any malfunctioning, switch the appliance off immediately and disconnect it from the mains electricity supply.

  • Only qualified personnel are authorised to clean inside or maintain the appliance.

  • Always disconnect the appliance from the mains supply before starting any maintenance work and before accessing any internal components.
  • Check the condition of the appliance's body, electrical connections, coolant lines and safety devices at regular intervals.
  • Never attempt to repair, move, modify or re-install the appliance yourself. Performed by unqualified personnel, such work can cause electric shock and lead to fires.
Refer any of the following situations to a qualified service engineer:

  • overheating or damaged mains leads;

  • unusual noises during functioning;
  • frequent tripping of safety devices;
  • unusual smells (e.g. the smell of burning).

  • The appliance can only operate correctly and without risk provided it has been installed and tested by specialist personnel.

  • This appliance contains moving parts, ensure that children can not access them.
  • Take care to maintain a comfortable room temperature, particularly in the presence of children, the elderly and the handicapped.
  • All materials used in the manufacture and packing of this appliance are recyclable.
  • Disposal of packing material and used batteries from the (optional) remote control in compliance with applicable legislation.
  • This appliance is an air conditioning system and contains a coolant that must be recovered and disposed of in an appropriate way by qualified personnel. At the end of the useful life of the appliance, take it to a proper recycling or disposal centre or return it to the dealer so that it can be disposed of correctly.

CAUTION!

The appliance must be switched off at the remote control. Never switch off the appliance by disconnecting it from the mains power supply.

For maximum comfort and minimum consumption

Maintain the room at a comfortable temperature (see fig. 1).

Avoid opening doors and windows more than necessary (see fig. 2).

Do not obstruct the indoor unit's intakes or outlets. This not only reduces efficiency by reducing the air flow, but can also lead to the malfunction (see fig. 3).

When using the appliance in cooling mode, try to prevent direct sunlight from heating up the room. Draw the curtains (see fig. 4).

Have the filter cleaned by qualified personnel. Make sure that it is replaced correctly inside the appliance (see fig. 5 and

Table II).

Periodically clean the intake grille and the area around the outdoor unit to maintain correct air flow (see fig. 6).

If you are not going to use the appliance for an extended period of time, carefully follow the instructions below.

Clean the indoor unit and the area around it.

Operate the appliance in ventilation mode for half a day to dry the inside of the unit (see fig. 7).

Switch the appliance off and then disconnect it from the mains power supply (see fig. 8).

Remove the batteries from the remote control (if relevant) (see fig. 9).

Clean the outdoor unit (see fig. 10).

System description

CARRIER 40 DMC - System description - 1

System description

This air conditioning system is made up of an indoor unit and an outdoor unit, inter-connected by coolant pipes and electrical cables (see fig. 11).

See the relevant installation manuals for information on how to install the indoor and outdoor units.

The appliance is fitted with the safety devices listed in Table I on Page 7 below to ensure maximum comfort and efficient functioning under all weather conditions.

Safety devices

Table I: Safety devices

SystemType of protectionWhat happensOperating mode in which the safety device tripsWhen the safety device trips
Heat pumpProtection against draughts of cold airThe internal fan is switched offHeat pump heating modeOn start-up or during functioning
Outdoor heat exchanger defrost cycleThe indoor and outdoor units' fans are switched offHeat pump heating modeDuring functioning
Only cooling and heat pump heating modesIndoor heat exchanger frost protectionThe compressor is switched offCoolingDuring functioning
Delayed compressor startThe compressor does not start immediately when the appliance is switched onCooling or heating in heat pump heating modeOn start-up or on mode change

IMPORTANT!

During functioning in heat pump heating mode, the unit performs defrost cycles to eliminate any ice that might form at low temperatures inside the outdoor unit.

During defrosting, the indoor fan is automatically switched off and does not start up again until defrosting has been completed.

The unit can be used with an infra-red remote control, or with the cabled "Room Controller" or "Zone Manager" remote controls. See the remote control's own manual for information on how to operate the infra-red or cable remote control. Remote controls must be installed by qualified personnel.

"IR remote control" (see fig. 12).
"Room Controller" (see fig. 13).
"Zone Manager" (see fig. 14).

Maintenance, Trouble - shooting and disposal

Warning!

  • The appliance must be maintained and cleaned internally only by qualified personnel.
  • Always disconnect the appliance from the mains supply

before starting any maintenance work and before accessing any internal components.

Perform the various cleaning and maintenance operations at the intervals specified in the following table.

Table II: Scheduled maintenance

Indoor unitEvery monthEvery 4 monthsEvery year
Clean the air filter (1)“√”
Clean the condensate drain pipe (1)“√”
Change the batteries in the infra-red remote control (if present)“√”

Perform the above maintenance operations at least at the intervals specified to keep the appliance functioning efficiently. Maintenance intervals should obviously be adapted to the conditions of each installation, e.g. the amount of dust in the atmosphere etc.. (1) These operations must be performed only by qualified personnel. See the relevant "Installation Manual".

Trouble-shooting (any subsequent maintenance must be performed only by qualified personnel)

The air conditioner fails to start:

  • The main switch is turned off. Turn the switch ON.
  • The fuses in the main switch have burned out. Change the fuses.
  • Wait three minutes. The compressor start-up delay has not finished.
  • The temperature setting is higher than the actual room temperature in cooling mode, or lower than it in heating mode (so the thermostat does not request functioning).
  • Check that the condensate pump (if fitted) is not in alarm state and that the level of water in the condensate bowl is not too high.

Very poor air conditioning efficiency:

  • The air flow to or from the indoor or outdoor unit is obstructed.
  • The air filter is dirty and is restricting the air flow. The filter must be cleaned only by qualified personnel.
  • A door or window is open.
  • Fan speed is on a low setting.
  • The temperature setting is not suitable.

Mist comes out of the unit:

  • This can occur when the appliance is functioning in cooling mode. It is caused by cold air from the air conditioner coming into contact with warm, humid air in the room.

The air conditioner whistles briefly when it is switched on or off:

  • This is caused by the coolant starting to circulate and pressure equalising inside the coolant circuit. It is normal and stops quickly.

The unit emits an unpleasant smell:

  • Unpleasant smells can build up in the indoor unit's air filter and be blown into the room when the appliance is functioning. Switch the appliance off and call an authorised service centre to have the filters changed. Re-start the appliance in ventilation mode and open the windows to change the air.

Disposal

The coolant in the appliance must be recovered and disposed of by qualified personnel before the appliance itself can be disposed of. At the end of the appliance's useful life, have the appliance and all its components processed and disposed of by a proper disposal service.
