1. Safety

1.1 General safety instructions for power tool use

Warning: Read all the instructions. Failure to adhere to the following instructions may lead to electric shock, fires or serious injuries.

SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS.

The term “power tool” in the following text refers to your handheld mains operated or battery operated tool.

1) Work area

a) Keep the work area clean and well illuminated. Cluttered and poorly lit areas invite accidents.
b) Do not use power tools in explosive environments, e.g. near to flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools generate sparks that can easily ignite dust or fumes.
c) Keep children and bystanders away from the area where you are using the power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose concentration and control of the tool.

2) Electrical safety

a) The plug of the power tool must fit correctly into the wall socket. Never modify the plug in any way. Never use an adaptor plug together with earthed power tools. Unmodified plugs and suitable wall sockets minimize the risk of electric shocks.
b) Avoid physical contact with earthed objects such as pipes, radiators, ovens and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of receiving an electric shock if your body is earthed.
c) Do not expose the power tool to rain or other wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
d) Do not abuse the mains lead. Never use the lead to carry/drag the tool or to jerk the plug from a wall socket. Keep the lead away from heat, oil, sharp edges and moving parts. Damaged or tangled leads increase the risk of electric shock.
e) When using power tools outdoors, use an extension lead that is suitable for this purpose. The use of an extension lead designed for outdoor use decreases the risk of electric shocks.
f) If using the power tool in a wet environment is unavoidable, use a wall socket equipped with a portable residual current device (RCD) for proper safety. Use of an RCD significantly reduces the risk of electric shock.

3) Personal safety

a) Pay attention to what you are doing and use common sense when using power tools. Never use power tools if you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. One moment of inattention while using a power tool may result in serious injury.

b) Wear protective clothing. Always wear safety glasses. Using protective clothing such as dust masks, non-slip safety shoes, helmets and ear defenders reduces the risk of injury.

c) Avoid accidental starts. Make sure that the power switch is set to OFF before plugging the power tool into a wall socket, fitting the battery or picking up/carrying the power tool. Never carry a power tool with your finger on the trigger and never connect the power tool to a wall socket when the switch is set to ON, since it may result in injury.

d) Remove all service tools/keys before switching on the power tool. A service tool left on a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.

e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.

f) Wear suitable clothing. Do not wear loose-fitting clothing or jewellery. Keep hair, clothes and gloves away from moving parts. Loose-fitting clothes, jewellery or long hair could become caught in moving parts.

g) If equipment for the extraction and collection of dust is available, make sure it is connected and properly used. Use of dust collection equipment can reduce dust related hazards.

4) Power tool use and maintenance

a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer if used at the rate for which it was designed.

b) Never use the power tool if the power switch does not switch the tool on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled by the power switch is dangerous and must be repaired.

c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories or storing the power tool. These precautions reduce the risk of the power tool starting unexpectedly.

d) Store power tools that are not being used out of children's reach. Do not allow people who are unfamiliar with the tool or its functions to operate it. Power tools can be dangerous if they fall into the hands of inexperienced users.

e) Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment, binding of moving parts, broken parts or anything else which might affect the operation of the power tool. If any damage is noticed, have the power tool repaired before using. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
g) Use the power tool and any accessories in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed.

Using the power tool for a purpose other than that for which it is intended could result in a dangerous situation.

5) Proper use and maintenance of cordless power tools

a) Charge the battery using a charger recommended by the manufacturer.
b) The tool is supplied with a battery provided by the manufacturer. Do not use any other battery.
c) If handled incorrectly, battery fluid can leak from the battery. If this fluid should come into contact with skin; rinse the area thoroughly with water. Always contact a doctor if battery fluid comes into contact with your eyes.

6) Service

a) Repairs and service should only be performed by qualified tradesmen, and only with original spare parts. This guarantees that the safety of the power tool is maintained.

7. Using the pruning saw

Note: Always make sure that the battery is removed before carrying out any type of maintenance, longer transport or cleaning.

Note: The saw chain must always be sharp and correctly tensioned for ensuring proper and safe tree pruning. Have a professional sharpen the chain for you if you are not sure how to do it.

7.1 Before using

Top up with saw chain oil. Note: Only use a good quality saw chain oil.

  1. Set the saw down securely onto the ground.
  2. Open the oil reservoir cap.
  3. Carefully fill the oil reservoir.
  4. Check the filler cap gasket and change replace if damaged. Keep the area around the filler cap free of dirt so that none gets into the reservoir.
  5. Screw the oil filler cap back on.
  6. Wipe up any spilled oil.
  7. Check for proper saw chain lubrication. Refer to the Starting the saw section below.

7.2 Adjusting the telescopic shaft

The telescopic shaft has two lock-collars for length adjustment.

  1. Loosen both lock-collars (17).
  2. Set the telescopic shaft (4) to the desired length.
  3. Tighten the lock-collars.
  4. Secure the shoulder strap to its anchor point (2).

7.3 Work area

  • Always keep the work area tidy so you can move freely without the risk of tripping over obstacles.
  • Make sure that there are no loose branches which could become caught in the saw.

7.4 Safety check

  1. Make sure that you are wearing all required safety gear before starting.
  2. Make sure that all parts of the saw are whole, accounted for and undamaged.
  3. Make sure that the saw chain is correctly tensioned.

7.5 Sawing technique

It is advisable to practice your sawing technique on easily accessible branches first. This will allow you to comfortably practice your sawing technique in various situations. It will then be easier and safer for you to progress onto using more advanced sawing techniques.

Note: Never saw into bushes or thin branches. These can get caught in the saw chain and cause the saw to be thrown out of control.

Always use the bottom side of the blade for cutting branches. This technique involves sawing branches from the top to the bottom. The saw chain pulls the saw forwards, away from the user. When pull sawing, the user has much more control over the saw and can better avoid kickbacks.

Push sawing

This technique involves sawing the branch from the bottom to the top. The saw chain thus pulls the saw back towards the user. This means that the user has to equalise the rearward force of the saw chain to compensate. If the force is not equalised, there is a danger of the guide bar being pulled too far backwards so that just the tip of the bar is in contact with the branch. This can cause kickbacks or unexpected bar movement.

Lopping off branches

When sawing thinner branches, it is usually sufficient to employ the pull sawing technique. When sawing thicker branches, use the following technique:

  1. Make the first cut from below, about 15–20 cm from the tree trunk. Cut about 1/3 of the way through the branch.
  2. Make the second cut about 5–10 cm outside the first cut. Cut from above and cut all the way through the branch.
  3. Place the third cut as close to the tree trunk as possible. Cut about 1/3 of the way through the branch. Saw from the bottom.
  4. Make the fourth cut as close the tree trunk as possible and cut all the way through the branch. Saw from the top.

Note:

• Always begin with the branches lowest down on the trunk.
• Always stand in a well-balanced stable stance.
- Never work whilst standing on a ladder.
- Never saw off a branch which is directly above your head.
- Never overreach, lean too far forward or too far backward.
- Never work in poor light or weather conditions.
• Always use the carrying harness.
• Always hold the saw with both hands.

- Tidy the work area before beginning work and check the surroundings for foreign objects that may interfere with proper work safety.

7.6 Starting the saw

  1. Mount the battery.
  2. Hold in the safety catch (7) and pull and hold the power trigger (8) to start. Release the safety catch but continue to grip power trigger pulled in for continuous operation.
  3. Check for proper saw chain lubrication. Point the tip of the chain bar about 10–15 cm away from a solid light-coloured object and start the saw. After about 30 seconds of running, a line of oil should be visible on the object.
  4. Allow the saw chain to reach full speed before beginning to saw.
  5. The saw will stop automatically if the power trigger is released.

8. Mounting the hedge trimmer head

The hedge trimmer head is fully assembled and ready to use and only needs to be mounted onto the drive motor.

  • Hold the trimmer firmly; maintain a steady stance and do not lean out too far. Be extra careful when using a ladder.
  • Move the trimmer along in a slow and steady motion following the line of cut.
  • The double-sided cutter bar enables trimming in both directions or in a sweeping motion from side to side.
  • For even trimming on the sides of hedges, it is better to cut in the direction of growth, from the bottom up.
  • If you trim from the top down, the thinner twigs will bend out and there is a risk of holes or thin patches appearing in your hedge.
  • In order to ensure a straight top edge, you can stretch a length of string over the hedge as a guide.

10. Care and maintenance

10.1 Hedge trimmer

Note: Remove the battery before cleaning or adjusting the trimmer.

  • Do not expose the hedge trimmer to rain.
  • Wear protective gloves when handling or cleaning the blades.
  • Regularly check that the start switch and safety lock are undamaged and work correctly.
  • Regularly check the condition of the blades and make sure that all screws in the cutter bar are tight and secure.
  • Lubricate the cutter bar with an appropriate lubricant if the trimmer is not to be used for a long time.
  • Clean the exterior of the tool with a soft brush and cloth.
  • Do not use any water, solvents or polish for cleaning or other maintenance.
  • Remove all dirt, especially from around the motor ventilation ports.
  • Store the trimmer in a dry, dust-free environment out of the reach of children.
  • Do not store the battery in temperatures below zero.
    • Always keep the blade guard on when the hedge trimmer is not in use.

10.2 Pruning saw

Note: Always make sure that the battery is removed before conducting any type of maintenance, longer transport or cleaning.

  • For proper safe and satisfactory operation, always keep the saw chain sharp and correctly tensioned. Have a professional sharpen the chain for you if you are not sure how to do it.
  • Make sure that the ventilation openings of the motor are kept clear.

- Regularly remove the chain and bar and clean the oil guide groove (29) and the area around the chain drive sprocket.

- Clean the exterior of the product using a lightly moistened cloth. Use only mild cleaning agents, never solvents or corrosive chemicals.

• Always put the chain guard over the bar and carry the saw with the bar pointing backwards when moving location.

- If the saw is not to be used for a long time, always drain the chain oil and store the saw horizontally in a dry, well-ventilated place.
