Frequently Asked Questions - C544L AKG

How do I connect the C544L microphone?

Insert the miniature XLR connector of the microphone cable into a miniature XLR socket of the B 29 L power supply, MPA V L adapter, or bodypack transmitter until it locks automatically. To disconnect, press the connector's release button.

Does the microphone require a specific power supply?

Yes, the C544L is an electret condenser microphone that needs power. You can use a 9V battery via the B 29 L power supply, a bodypack transmitter, or 9-52 V phantom power via the MPA V L adapter. Use only AKG-recommended power supplies.

How do I clean the microphone and windscreen?

Clean the microphone housing with a slightly damp cloth (clear water). The windscreen can be washed in mild soapy water; it can be reused once dry.

What should I do if the microphone produces no sound?

Check the following: 1) Is the console and/or amplifier powered on? 2) Is the channel fader or master level turned up? 3) Is the microphone properly connected? 4) Is the plug fully inserted? 5) Is the cable damaged? 6) Is the power (phantom or battery) active? Replace the cable if necessary.

The sound is distorted, what should I do?

Distortion may be caused by excessive gain on the mixing console or a too-sensitive input. Lower the gain setting or insert a sensitivity pad between the microphone cable and the input.

How do I replace the O-ring?

If the O-ring is damaged, replace it with a spare O-ring provided. Follow figure 3 in the manual: remove the old O-ring and place the new one on the microphone capsule. Always keep the O-ring in place to prevent blockage from sweat or makeup.

Can this microphone be used outdoors in windy conditions?

Yes, but it is recommended to use the included windscreen. Attach it to the microphone capsule to reduce breath, wind, and pop noise. Outdoors, move the microphone slightly away from the mouth if wind noise is too strong.

What is the directivity of the C544L and how should I position it?

The C544L is a cardioid microphone, primarily picking up sounds from the front. Position the microphone in front of the corner of your mouth, bending the gooseneck. Adjust the position during soundcheck: move closer for more power, farther to reduce pops.

Is the microphone compatible with a console without phantom power?

Yes, you can use the B 29 L power supply with a 9V battery, or a bodypack transmitter. If your console does not provide phantom power, the MPA V L adapter will not work.

How do I maintain the cable and connectors?

To avoid damaging the cable, never pull on it to disconnect the connector. Use the release button. Regularly check the cable condition; if damaged, replace it. Clean connectors with a dry cloth if necessary.

The Microphone

The C 544 is a head-worn miniature condenser microphone with a convenient behind-the-neck headband. The microphone has a cardioid polar pattern and therefore “prefers” sounds arriving from in front of it (from the user’s mouth).

The microphone body containing the condenser transducer is shock mounted on the microphone arm in order to suppress cable and mechanical noise. The microphone arm will place the microphone in front of the corner of your mouth to minimize pop noise and protect the microphone from contamination. The supplied windscreen makes the microphone even less susceptible to wind and pop noise.

Moisture Shield

A special moisture shield on the microphone capsule makes it difficult for moisture and makeup to penetrate into the microphone. This barrier prevents the microphone sound entries from being clogged by perspiration or makeup which would make the sound dull and reduce the sensitivity of the microphone. Therefore, never remove the moisture shield from the microphone!

The C 544 is a condenser microphone and therefore needs a power supply.

Introduction

- Using any power supply other than those recommended by AKG may damage your microphone and will void the warranty.

1. Plug the mini XLR connector on the microphone cable all the way into one of the two mini XLR sockets on the B 29 L, the mini XLR socket on the connecting cable of the MPA V L, or the input jack on your bodypack transmitter. The connector will lock automatically.

Connecting the Microphone

- To disconnect the cable, press the unlocking button on the mini XLR connector (1) and pull the connector (1) out of the socket.

Disconnecting the cable:

- To avoid damaging the cable, never pull at the cable itself!

1. B 29 L: Connect the B 29 L to the desired input. MPA V L: Connect the MPA V L to a balanced XLR microphone input with phantom power and switch the phantom power on.

Putting the Microphone On

1. Put the microphone on as shown in fig. 1 above.
2. Bend the gooseneck so that the microphone will sit to one side in front of the corner of your mouth.

1. Find the optimum position during the soundcheck.

• Should you hear excessive pop noise ("p" and "t" sounds are overemphasized unnaturally), move the microphone capsule further away from your mouth (up or back).
• If the microphone sounds "thin" or flat, move the microphone capsule closer to your mouth (refer to fig. 3).

If (for instance, in outdoor use) excessive wind or pop noise becomes audible, attach the supplied windscreen to the microphone.

Using the Windscreen

1. Slide the windscreen onto the microphone capsule.
2. Pull the windscreen over the outer edge of the micro phone capsule.

Replacing the Moisture Shield

- If the moisture shield gets damaged, replace it with one of the supplied extra moisture shields as shown above.

5 Cleaning

Microphone Body

- To clean the microphone surface, use a soft cloth moistened with water.

Windscreen

- Clean the foam windscreen in mild soap suds. You can use the windscreen again as soon as it has dried.
