1 SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

1.1 General electrical machine safety warnings

WARNING! Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations and specifications provided with this machine. Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.

■ Save all warnings and instructions for future reference.

The term "machine" in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) machine or battery-operated (cordless) machine.

1.1.1 Work area safety

  • Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
  • Do not operate machines in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Machines create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
  • Keep children and bystanders away while operating a machine. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

1.1.2 Electrical safety

■ Machine plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) machines. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
- Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
- Do not operate the lawnmower in rain or wet conditions. This may increase the risk of electric shock.

  • Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the machine. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
  • When operating a machine outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of an extension cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
If operating a machine in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.

1.1.3 Personal safety

■ Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a machine. Do not use a machine while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating machines may result in serious personal injury.
■ Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as a dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
■ Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the machine. Carrying machines with your finger on the switch or energising machines that have the switch on invites accidents.
■ Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the machine on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the machine may result in personal injury.
- Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the machine in unexpected situations.
■ Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair and clothing away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly

used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.

  • Do not let familiarity gained from frequent use of machines allow you to become complacent and ignore machine safety principles. A careless action can cause severe injury within a fraction of a second.

1.1.4 Battery machine use and care

■ Recharge only with the charger specified by the manufacturer. A charger that is suitable for one type of battery pack may create a risk of fire when used with another battery pack.
■ Use machines only with specifically designated battery packs. Use of any other battery packs may create a risk of injury and fire.
- When battery pack is not in use, keep it away from other metal objects, like paper clips, coins, keys, nails, screws or other small metal objects, that can make a connection from one terminal to another. Shorting the battery terminals together may cause burns or a fire.

■ Under abusive conditions, liquid may be ejected from the battery; avoid contact. If contact accidentally occurs, flush with water. If liquid contacts eyes, additionally seek medical help. Liquid ejected from the battery may cause irritation or burns.

- Do not use a battery pack or machine that is damaged or modified. Damaged or modified batteries may exhibit unpredictable behaviour resulting in fire, explosion or risk of injury.

- Do not expose a battery pack or machine to fire or excessive temperature. Exposure to fire or temperature above 130°C may cause explosion.

■ Follow all charging instructions and do not charge the battery pack or machine outside the temperature range specified in the instructions. Charging improperly or at temperatures outside the specified range may damage the battery and increase the risk of fire.

1.1.5 Service

■ Have your machine serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the machine is maintained.
■ Never service damaged battery packs. Service of battery packs should only be per-

formed by the manufacturer or authorized service providers.

1.2 Lawnmower safety warnings

Do not use the lawnmower in bad weather conditions, especially when there is a risk of lightning. This decreases the risk of being struck by lightning.
■ Thoroughly inspect the area for wildlife where the lawnmower is to be used. Wildlife may be injured by the lawnmower during operation.
■ Thoroughly inspect the area where the lawnmower is to be used and remove all stones, sticks, wires, bones, and other foreign objects. Thrown objects can cause personal injury.
Before using the lawnmower, always visually inspect to see that the blade and the blade assembly are not worn or damaged. Worn or damaged parts increase the risk of injury.
- Check the grass catcher frequently for wear or deterioration. A worn or damaged grass catcher may increase the risk of personal injury.
- Keep guards in place. Guards must be in working order and be properly mounted. A guard that is loose, damaged, or is not functioning correctly may result in personal injury.
- Keep all cooling air inlets clear of debris. Blocked air inlets and debris may result in overheating or risk of fire.
■ While operating the lawnmower, always wear non-slip and protective footwear. Do not operate the lawnmower when barefoot or wearing open sandals. This reduces the chance of injury to the feet from contact with the moving blade.
■ While operating the lawnmower, always wear long trousers. Exposed skin increases the likelihood of injury from thrown objects.
- Do not operate the lawnmower in wet grass. Walk, never run. This reduces the risk of slipping and falling which may result in personal injury.
- Do not operate the lawnmower on excessively steep slopes. This reduces the risk of loss of control, slipping and falling which may result in personal injury.
■ When working on slopes, always be sure of your footing, always work across the face of slopes, never up or down and ex-

ercise extreme caution when changing direction. This reduces the risk of loss of control, slipping and falling which may result in personal injury.

■ Use extreme caution when reversing or pulling the lawnmower towards you. Always be aware of your surroundings. This reduces the risk of tripping during operation.
- Do not touch blades and other hazardous moving parts while they are still in motion. This reduces the risk of injury from moving parts.
■ When clearing jammed material or cleaning the lawnmower, make sure all power switches are off and the battery pack is disconnected. Unexpected operation of the lawnmower may result in serious personal injury.
■ Always allow the product to cool down before storing.
■ Empty the grassbox before storing.
- When adjusting the machine, make sure not to pinch your fingers between the moving blades and fixed parts of the machine.

1.3 Safety notes for rechargeable battery and charger

■ Remove the battery from the appliance before charging.
- Insert the battery into the appliance with the correct polarity.
■ Remove the battery from the appliance before putting it into storage for an extended period.
- Do not short-circuit the terminals of the appliance or battery.

7 WORK INSTRUCTIONS

Observe the safety instructions!

AL-KO 38.6 Li Comfort - WORK INSTRUCTIONS - 1

NOTE Comply with the local regulations as when a lawnmower may be operated.

  • Watch out for objects in the grass and remove them from the working area.
    ■ Mow only when visibility is good.
    ■ Mow only with a sharp cutting blade.
    ■ Steer the appliance only by the handlebar.
    ■ Move the appliance only at walking speed.
    ■ Always move the appliance across the slope. Do not mow up or down the slope, or on slopes with a gradient of more than 10^ . Exercise particular care when changing the working direction.

Cutting performance or operating time of the batteries

The cutting performance or the area that can be mowed depends on the characteristics of the lawn. Factors such as the length of the grass, the grass density, the selected cutting height and wet grass affect the cutting performance.
An optimum operating time is achieved by frequent mowing and keeping the grass short.
■ Frequently switching the lawnmower on and off during mowing reduces the cutting performance as do non-fully charged batteries.
Engaging wheel drive ^a) reduces the cutting performance and the operating time of the batteries.
To optimise the cutting performance, we recommend that you mow the lawn frequently, set a high cutting height and move the appliance at walking speed.

AL-KO 38.6 Li Comfort - Cutting performance or operating time of the batteries - 1

NOTE Additional batteries can be purchased prolong the operating time.

a) 46.6 Li SP comfort, 51.6 Li SP comfort

Tips for mowing

  • Maintain a constant cutting height of 3–5 cm; do not mow the lawn to less than half its original height.
  • Do not overload the lawnmower! If the engine speed drops noticeably because of long, thick grass, increase the cutting height and mow in several passes.
Wind and sun can dry out the lawn after mowing, so it is better to mow in the late afternoon.

a) 46.6 Li SP comfort, 51.6 Li SP comfort

Transporting the appliance in a vehicle

■ Remove the battery.
■ Fold down the handlebar.
- Secure the appliance in the vehicle against falling over and slipping.
■ Protect the appliance against collisions with loose objects.
■ Do not place objects on the appliance.

10.2 Transport

Perform the following measures before transporting the appliance:

  1. Switch off the appliance.
  2. Remove the battery from the appliance.
  3. Pack the battery properly (see below).

i NOTE The nominal energy of the rechargeable battery is more than 100 Wh. Therefore, observe the following transport instructions.

The Li-ion rechargeable battery contained in the appliance is subject to the hazardous goods law, but can be transported under simplified conditions:

The rechargeable battery can be transported on public roads by the private user without further conditions provided it is packaged for retail sale and the transport serves personal purposes.

■ Commercial users who carry out the transport in connection with their main activity (e.g. delivery from and to building sites, or demonstrations) can also take advantage of this simplification.

In both cases, it is essential to take the mandatory precautions mentioned above to prevent any leakage of the contents. In other cases, it is essential to comply with the regulations of the hazardous goods law. In the case of non-compliance, severe penalties can be imposed on the sender and possibly the transporter.

Additional notes on transport and shipment

■ Only transport or send the li-ion rechargeable battery in an undamaged condition.
For transporting the rechargeable battery, only use the original cardboard box or a suitable hazardous goods cardboard box (not required for rechargeable batteries with a nominal energy less than 100 Wh).
■ Tape off exposed rechargeable battery contacts to avoid a short circuit.
- Secure the rechargeable battery against shifting in the packaging to avoid damage to the rechargeable battery.
■ Ensure the correct marking and documentation of the shipment for transport or shipping (e.g. by parcel service or freight forwarding).
- Check in advance that transport with the selected service provider is possible and indicate the shipment.

We recommend involving a hazardous goods specialist in preparation of the shipment. Also heed any further national regulations.
