4. Operating the clock radio

Please unwind the wire antenna completely and connect the plug-in power supply with the clock radio and the power supply.

When the unit is switched on for the first time, an automatic DAB + channel search is started. Please wait until this process is completed. For more information, please refer to the section "Digital radio DAB+".

4.1 Switching On/Off (standby)

Press the < 1 / 0> button on the device to turn the clock radio on. Press the button again to put the device into standby mode.

4.2 Navigate in the menus

There is an information line below the large clock display which shows various information as well as the setting menus. There you can see all the functions and menus described here. Keep the button pressed to call up the source-related menu.

You can navigate through the menu by pressing the or buttons.

Confirm the menu selection with the button. Briefly press the button to leave the respective menu.

Important note: Use the "Upgrade" menu only upon request of the KENWOOD Customer Service. If you have called up the menu accidentally and started the ("Waiting for PC") process, disconnect the clock radio from the power supply for approx. 10 seconds.

4.3 Adjusting the volume

Press the < + > or - button to set the volume. The volume setting is graphically displayed in the display.

4.4 Additional information

By repeatedly pressing the button, depending on the source and station, additional information can be displayed:

Description
- Name of the station, the current program, content, topics, etc.
Genre
- Signal level and signal error
- Bit rate
- Channel information
Today's date and current time

4.5 Setting the menu language

  1. Call up the menu with the button.
  2. Using the or buttons select the "System".
  3. In the next step, select the "Language" menu and confirm with button.
  4. Then select the desired language and confirm with .

4.6 Resetting to delivery state

  1. Call up the menu with the button.
  2. Using the or buttons select the "System".
  3. In the next step, select the "Reset" menu and confirm with the button. There, please confirm "YES", now the clock radio starts again ("Restart").

4.7 Setting the time and date

When receiving a DAB + or FM station in sufficient quality, the clock will be set automatically. Depending on the reception strength, this process may take some time. If no corresponding station is available, you can also set the time manually:

  1. Call up the menu with the button.
  2. Using the or buttons select the "System".
  3. Using the or buttons select the "Time" menu and confirm.
  4. Select "Set time/date" and confirm. Then select, set and confirm hours, minutes, day, month and year.

Additional settings in the "Time" menu

The following functions can be set in the "Time" menu:

"Auto Update": Setting from which source the time is automatically retrieved.

Choices: "From Any" / "From DAB" / "From FM" / "No Update"

"12/24 hr": Setting the time format.

Choices: "24 hr" / "12 hr"

"Set date format": Setting the date format.

Choices: "DDMMYYYY" / "MMDDYYYY"

4.8 Setting the display illumination

The display illumination can be set in various brightness levels. The following settings can be made in the "Backlight" menu:

"Auto-Dimm": If this function is set to "On", the background lighting will be reduced to brightness level "Standby-Level" after 10 seconds. With "Off" setting the lighting remains at the "On level" setting.

"On level": Brightness of the Display when the clock radio is switched on. There are 5 adjustable levels. Select with or buttons, confirm with .

"Standby level": Brightness of the Display when the clock radio is switched off. There are 3 adjustable levels. Select with or buttons, confirm with .

4.9 Setting the sleep timer

The sleep timer is used to automatically switch off the clock radio after a preset period of time. For adjustment, please proceed as follows:

  1. Call up the menu with the button.
  2. Using the or buttons select the "System".
  3. Using the or buttons select the "Sleep" menu and then confirm.
  4. In the following menu please choose from the following options: "Off, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 minutes". Confirm the desired setting with the button.
  5. Activated snooze function is displayed now with a symbol on the right next to the time display.

The clock radio offers 4 pre-set sound patterns which you can choose according to your personal taste: "Normal" / "Pop" / "Rock" / "Jazz". For adjustment, please proceed as follows:

  1. Call up the menu with the button.
  2. Using the or buttons select the "System".
  3. Using the or buttons select the "EQ" menu and confirm.
  4. In the following menu please choose from the following sound patterns: "Normal" / "Pop" / "Rock" / "Jazz".

Confirm the desired setting with the button.

4.11 Setting the alarm clock

The CR-ST40DAB can be set to 3 different alarm times. These alarm times can be programmed for the following time blocks: "Daily" / "Once" / "Weekend" / "Business Days". To set the alarm time, please proceed as follows:

  1. Press the button on the device.
  2. Now select "Alarm 1 Setup", "Alarm 2 Setup" or "Alarm 3 Setup", and confirm the selection with the button. Now you can make the appropriate settings. Please confirm each selection with the button.

  3. Setting the wake-up time. Select hour and minutes, confirm with the button.

  4. Setting the alarm duration in minutes, the following settings are available:
  • Setting the wake-up source, following settings are available: "Buzzer" / "DAB" / "FM"
  • If "DAB" or "FM" sources are selected, then in the next step please confirm "Last listened" or one of the stored presets with the or buttons. "Last listened" indicates that the last heard radio station will be used for the alarm function.
    Now select the desired wake-up time interval. The following settings are available: "Daily" / "Once" / "Weekends" / "Weekdays" For the "Once" time interval the desired date is entered directly. Please make the appropriate settings.
    Now set the desired "Alarm volume". The settings from "1" - "16" correspond to the volumes of the radio reception.
  • Now complete the setting of the alarm clock by selecting "On" in the last step. "Saved" is briefly shown in the Display, the symbol for activated alarm is shown on the right next to the time display. If you wish to deactivate a programmed alarm, select the function "Off" in the last step, the alarm symbol is no longer displayed after completion.

The alarm switches on at the specified time for the set duration. If you wish to interrupt the alarm signal, press the button. This will interrupt the alarm function for 5 minutes. If you wish the end the alarm until the next alarm time, please press the or button. "Alarm off" briefly appears in the Display.

5. Digital radio DAB+

Press the button until "DAB" appears in the display.

5.1 Setting the DAB+ stations

During start-up of the device, a station search has already been carried out. The stations found are stored alphabetically in the station list.

  • Call up the menu with the button.

The display shows "Full scan". Start the search with the button.

Alternatively, you can also start the station scan with the button.

  • During the search, the display will show the number of stations found so far.
  • If no stations are found during the search, "No DAB station" will be displayed for approx. 2 seconds and then change to "Full search".

Please check the correct orientation of the antenna or try to find another location for the device for better reception.

Manual tuning of ensembles:

  • Call up the menu with the button.
  • Using or select the "Manual tune" menu and then press

The current set station with the associated frequency appears in the Display.

  • Use the or buttons to manually select another channel.
  • Using the button confirm the selection. Thereafter, the signal level is shown in the display, another pressing stores the selected ensemble.

Selecting a DAB+ station

The stations stored in the station list can be selected as follows:

  • Press the or buttons to scroll forward or backward in the station list.
  • Once the desired station is selected press the button to start the playback.
  • If the reception level on the selected station is insufficient for trouble-free playback, there appears "Off Air" in the display. Then, please select another station or optimise the wire antenna alignment.

5.2 Storing stations in the station memory (presets)

To store DAB stations for easier retrieval, 20 memory slots are available.

Assignment of the memory locations 1 - 20:

  • Select a station to save
  • Press the button for 2 seconds, "<1: ......" appears in the Display.
  • Using the or buttons, select a memory location 1 - 20.
  • Briefly press the button, to complete saving. The "Stored" is shown in the Display.
  • The stored stations can be called up with the button, selected with the on buttons and stored with .

Stored stations cannot be deleted, but can only be overwritten with other stations. If you wish to delete the station memory, you must reset the clock radio to the delivery state.

5.3 Menu functions DAB +

Keep the button pressed to call up the source-related menu. Using the or buttons you can scroll through the menu. You can select the menu item with the button. The following functions are available:

  • "Full search": Another automatic station search.
  • "Manual tune": This allows you to manually set a specific reception channel.
  • "DRC" (Dynamic Range Control): If supported by the selected station, it is possible to adjust the dynamic range. Possible settings are "DRC Off", "DRC high" and "DRC low". You can make the selection using the or buttons and confirm the selection with the button.
  • "Order": This determines whether the station is sorted "Alphabet" or according to "Ensemble". You can make the selection using the or buttons and confirm the selection with the button.
  • "Prune": This deletes stations that are not (are no longer) receivable from the station list. You can recognise these stations by a pre-set "?" in front of the station name. Select "YES" or "NO" with the or buttons, and confirm the selection with the button.
  • "System": Settings for sleep timer, equaliser (EQ), time, Backlight, language and factory settings.

6. FM Radio

Press the button until "FM" appears in the display.

6.1 Setting an FM station

  • Press the button to increase the reception frequency.
  • Press the button to reduce reception frequency.
  • If your press and hold the or buttons, an automatic station search starts, which stops at the next station found.
  • Alternatively, press the or buttons to start the station scan.

6.2 Storing stations in the station memory (presets)

To store FM stations for easier retrieval, 20 memory slots are available.

7. BLUETOOTH Audio

The BLUETOOTH function enables the wireless transmission of music files (audio streaming) to the clock radio. Smartphones, tablets or similar devices can be paired.

Press the button until "Bluetooth" appears in the display.

7.1 Establishing a connection

  • The display shows "Waiting BT Connection".
  • Start a BLUETOOTH device scan on your mobile device. Select "CR-ST40DAB" from the device list and pair both devices as usual.
  • "BT connected" is shown on the display. Now you can playback the desired content on your mobile device.

You can control basic playback functions on the radio as well:

  • button: Playback/Pause Function
  • The or buttons: Skip track forwards or backwards

7.2 Disconnect a connection

Only one device can be connected via BLUETOOTH with the radio at any one time. If you wish to connect another device, you must first disconnect the current device. Proceed as follows:

  • Disconnect the pairing of the device on your mobile device.
  • The devices are also unpaired, if you move them outside the range of the BLUETOOTH.

Note: If you switch off the radio, it reconnects automatically with the BLUETOOTH device as soon as it is switched on again, as long as it is nearby, is switched on and the BLUETOOTH function is activated.

8. USB playback

You can use this source to play MP3 files (16 bit/48kHz) from a USB stick (max. 32 GB).

For this, press the button until "USB" appears in the Display. "No USB device" appears on the Display when no appropriate USB stick is inserted. To play the audio files, please proceed as follows:

  • Insert a USB stick with compatible audio files in the USB port on the back side of the clock radio. The playback starts automatically.
  • The number of the current track and the playtime already elapsed is shown on the display.

You can control basic playback functions on the radio as well:

  • button: Playback/Pause Function
  • The or buttons: Skip track forwards or backwards

The USB port can also be used to charge smartphones and tablets.

9. AUX-In

To play music, external devices such as e.g. MP3 players, DVD players or game consoles can be connected to the "Aux In" connection on the back side of the clock radio.

For this, press the button until "Aux In" appears in the display.

Note: For this, use a commercially available audio cable with 3.5mm jack plug (not included in scope of delivery).

10. Troubleshooting

11. Maintenance and care

Cleaning the housing: Use a cloth lightly moistened with a mild detergent. Do not use detergents containing alcohol, ammonia or scouring agents.

Cautions on condensation

Condensation (dew) may form inside the unit if there is a significant difference between the temperature of the unit and the ambient temperature. If condensation occurs inside the unit, proper function is no longer guaranteed. In this case, you have to wait a few hours; After the moisture has dried, the device can be reused.

Special care should be taken in the following circumstances

When the unit is moved from one place to another at a much higher or lower temperature, or when the humidity at the installation site increases, etc.

This warranty covers material and workmanship defects. We reserve the right to replace the product if cost-efficient repair is no longer possible. Modifications required to operate the device in countries outside the country of destination are not covered by the aforementioned warranty conditions. In addition, we do not accept any liability for work in this context or for damage to the product resulting from such work.

If the product is used in a country for which it was not designed and manufactured, warranty work will only be carried out if the user bears the costs for upgrading the device to nationally applicable standards and safety regulations.

In addition, if the product differs from the products sold by the official importer and if spare parts are not available for the repair of this product, the user must bear the costs of transporting the device to and from the country of purchase.

The same applies if no warranty services can be offered in the country concerned for other legitimate reasons.

C. The following are excluded from the warranty:

(a) Changes to the product, as well as normal maintenance and adjustment work, including the regular checks mentioned in the Operating Instructions.
(b) Damage to the product caused by inadequate or improper work if this work was carried out by third parties who are not authorised to carry out warranty services on behalf of the manufacturer.
(c) Damage caused by negligence, accidents, changes, improper installation, defective packaging, incorrect operation or the use of incorrect spare parts for repairs.
(d) Damage caused by fire, water damage, lightning strikes, earthquakes, inadequate ventilation, force majeure, connection to incorrect mains voltage or other causes for which KENWOOD is not responsible.
(e) Damage to speakers due to overloading. Damages to other items that are not part of the product, such as: DVDs, compact discs, USB storage media, smartphones, etc.
(f) Consumable or wearing parts that have to be replaced as part of normal customer service, such as: Batteries, rechargeable batteries, lamps, etc.
(g) All products in which the serial number(s) has been completely or partially removed, changed or made illegible.

This warranty can be claimed by anyone who has purchased the product legally.

In accordance with the aforementioned warranty conditions, the product will be repaired or replaced free of charge. This right does not in any way affect other rights of the user within the framework of the applicable legal provisions. Repairs or replacements do not extend the warranty period.

Further claims are excluded, in particular those for conversion, reduction or compensation.
