The Intellinet 508315 is a media converter that allows you to connect a copper Ethernet network (RJ45) to a multimode fiber optic (ST) to extend the connection distance up to 550 m.

How to connect the converter?

Connect an Ethernet Cat5e or higher cable from the converter's RJ45 port to a switch or router. For fiber, connect the two ST ports with two fiber cables: TX of converter 1 to RX of converter 2, and RX of 1 to TX of 2.

What is the maximum distance with fiber?

With multimode fiber and the 1000Base-SX standard, the maximum distance is 550 meters.

What does the LINK/ACT indicator mean?

The LINK/ACT LED (for RJ45 or fiber) is solid when a link is active, and blinks during data transfer. If off, no link is detected.

Can I use the converter with single-mode fiber?

No, this model is designed for multimode fiber with ST connector. Use of single-mode fiber is not supported.

How to configure the DIP switch?

The DIP switch has 4 positions: position 1 enables/disables Link Fault Pass-through (LFP), position 2 selects cut-through or store-and-forward mode, and positions 3 and 4 are not used.

Does the converter support Power over Ethernet (PoE)?

No, this converter does not support PoE. It requires an external power supply via the included power adapter (5 V DC, 1 A).

Connections

Twisted Pair - RJ45

Connect the UTP port of the media converter to an RJ45 port on the network (e.g., to an Ethernet switch). Cat5e or better cabling is recommended.

Fiber Optic

As shown above, two fiber optic cables need to be connected between two ideally identical media converters. Make a connection from Media Converter 1 TX to Media Converter 2 RX, and from Media Converter 1 RX to Media Converter 2 TX. Maximum length and fiber cable specification depend on the model.
