Frequently Asked Questions - PIXMA G540 CANON

How to install the print heads on the Canon PIXMA G540?

Open the top cover, then the lock cover. Take out each print head (L and R) from the package, remove the label and orange tape. Insert head L on the left and head R on the right. Close the lock cover until it clicks, then press both mix buttons until they click. Close the cover.

How to pour ink into the tanks?

Open the top cover and the cap of the cartridge corresponding to the color. Hold the ink bottle upright, remove the cap. Align the nozzle with the inlet, slowly tip and press to let the ink flow. Carefully remove, replace the cartridge cap. Repeat for each color: BK, C, M, Y, GY.

How to connect the printer to a computer?

Go to the website http://ij.start.canon on the computer. Select Setup, enter 'PIXMA G540', click Start. Follow the instructions to download and run the file. You can also use the supplied installation CD-ROM.

How to connect the printer to a smartphone?

Install the Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY app from the App Store or Google Play. Open the smartphone's Wi-Fi settings and connect to the network starting with Canon_ij_. Open the app and follow the instructions to add the printer.

What to do if error code 1890 appears?

Error code 1890 indicates there is remaining protective material inside. Open the top cover, remove any orange tape or remaining packaging material, then close it. The error should disappear.

How to load paper into the printer?

Extend the paper support. Open the feed slot cover and slide the right paper guide to the right. Load at least 2 sheets of plain A4 paper or Letter, print side up. Slide the guide against the stack, close the cover, and extend the output tray.

How to safely move the printer?

Make sure the mix buttons are fully pressed to prevent leaks. Check that the ink valve lever is in the closed position. Pack the printer in a plastic bag, then in a sturdy cardboard box with protective material, with the bottom facing down. Do not tilt the printer.

How to use the installation CD-ROM?

Insert the CD-ROM into the computer's drive. Open the folder and double-click EasySetup.exe. Follow the instructions. If you don't have an internet connection, open the 'win' folder and double-click SETUP.exe to install the printer driver.

Which app to use for printing from a smartphone?

The official app is Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY. Available free on the App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android). It allows you to set up the printer and print documents and photos.

How to load photo paper?

Extend the paper support, open the slot cover and slide the guide to the right. Load several sheets of photo paper print side up, adjust the guide. Close the cover. On the screen, select the paper size and type (e.g., 10x15 cm, glossy), then press OK. Extend the output tray.

2. Removing Packing Materials

1 Remove and dispose of any packing materials and orange tape.
2 Open the top cover, remove and dispose of the orange tape and protective material inside.

3. Installing the Print Heads

1 Open the print head locking cover.

4. Turning on the Printer

1 Connect the power cord.

2 Press the ON button.

3 When the following screen appears, use the ◀ and ▶ buttons to select a language, and then press the OK button.

If an error appears on the screen, see "If an error message (support code) appears on the screen" on page 5 and follow the instructions.

5. Pouring Ink

Important

This product requires careful handling of ink. Ink may splatter when the ink tanks are filled with ink. If ink gets on your clothes or belongings, it may not come off.

1 Open the top cover.

2 Open the gray tank cap on the left of the printer.

3 Hold the GY (gray) ink bottle upright and gently twist the bottle cap to remove.

4 Align the nozzle of the ink bottle with the inlet.

5 Slowly stand the ink bottle upside down and push down to pour the ink.

- If the ink does not pour, gently remove the ink bottle and try again.

6 Gently remove the ink bottle from the inlet.

- Be careful not to spill the ink.

7 Replace the tank cap securely.

8 Repeat steps 2 through 7 to pour all ink for all colors into the ink tanks for each color.

- Pour the supplied ink that matches the color of the tank cap.

9 Close the top cover.

6. Loading Paper

1 Use the ◀ and ▶ buttons to select Yes, and then press the OK button.

2 Extend the paper support.

3 Open the feed slot cover and slide the right-hand side paper guide to the far right.

4 Load paper.

• Load 2 or more sheets of Letter or A4 sized plain paper.
• Slide the side paper guide against the edge of the paper stack.

5 Close the feed slot cover.

Connecting to a Computer

If you are using multiple computers, perform these steps on each computer.

1 Access the Canon website from your computer.

2 Select Set Up.
3 Enter your printer's model name and click Go.
4 Click Start.
5 Click (B) Connecting to a Computer/Smartphone.

• The following steps are for Windows users.

7 Run the downloaded file.

6 Click Download.

• Follow the on-screen instructions. This may take some time.
  • To connect to a smartphone as well, see "7-b. Connecting to a Smartphone" on page 7.

Using the Setup CD-ROM

Double click EasySetup.exe in the CD-ROM, and then continue from step 3. If you do not have an internet connection, open the win folder in the CD-ROM and double click SETUP.exe. This will install the printer driver.

Connecting to a Smartphone

If you are using multiple smartphones, perform these steps on each smartphone.

1 Install the "Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY" app on your smartphone.

• Search for "Canon PRINT" in App Store, or Google Play.

- Access the Canon website to download the app.

2 Open your smartphone's Wi-Fi settings. Check that the network name (SSID) that starts with "Canon_ij_" appears.

• If "Canon_ij_" appears - Proceed to step 3.
• If "Canon_ij_" does not appear - Proceed to step

3 Tap the network name (SSID) that starts with "Canon_ij_".
4 Open the installed app, and follow the on-screen instructions in the app to add your printer.

Once you have added your printer, you can print from your smartphone.

To print photos, see "Loading Photo Paper" on page 8.

Loading Photo Paper

1 Extend the paper support.

2 Open the feed slot cover and slide the right-hand side paper guide to the far right.

3 Load several sheets of photo paper with the print side facing up and slide the side paper guide against the edge of the paper stack.

4 Close the feed slot cover.

5 When Save the rear tray paper information appears on the printer's screen, press the OK button.

6 Select the paper size and type, and press the OK button.

7 Extend the paper output tray.

Transporting Your Printer

When relocating the printer, check the following. Refer to the Online Manual for details.

Check that both joint buttons are pressed down completely to avoid ink leaks.

Check that the position of the ink valve lever is closed.

Pack the printer in a plastic bag in case ink leaks.

• Pack the printer in a sturdy box so that it is placed with its bottom facing down, using sufficient protective material to ensure safe transport.
• Do not tilt the printer. Ink may leak.
• Please handle with care and ensure the box remains flat and NOT turned upside down or on its side, as the printer may be damaged and ink in the printer may leak.
• When a shipping agent is handling transport of the printer, have its box marked "THIS SIDE UP" to keep the printer with its bottom facing down. Mark also with "FRAGILE" or "HANDLE WITH CARE".
