Fein RS17-70E - Save all warnings and instructions for future reference. - 1

Do not use this power tool before you have thoroughly read and completely understood this Instruction Manual and the enclosed "General

Safety Instructions" (document number

3 41 30 465 06 0). The documents mentioned should be kept for later use and enclosed with the power tool, should it be passed on or sold.

Please also observe the relevant national industrial safety regulations.

Intended Use:

Hand-guided pipe sander for:

  • Dry belt grinding of metal pipe surfaces
  • Polishing of metal pipe surfaces

in weather-protected environments with the application tools and accessories recommended by FEIN.

Use only with firm footing.

The power tool is intended for operation by skilled personnel at non-permanent everyday use.

This power tool is also suitable for use with AC generators with sufficient power output that correspond to the Standard ISO 8528, design type G2. This Standard is particularly not complied with when the so-called distortion factor exceeds 10 %. When in doubt, please refer to the generator instruction/specification guide. All other types of use are considered as not intended for.

The operator is solely liable for any damage caused by use not as intended for.

Foreseeable improper use

For safe operation of the power tool and to exclude misuse, the following is prohibited:

  • Unauthorized modifications
  • Improper use, particularly (but not exclusively) for the processing of wood, mineral materials, magnesium, plastics, fiber-reinforced composites.
  • Non-observance of the operating instructions

Special safety instructions.

Hold the power tool by the insulated gripping surfaces, as the grinding surface can run into the machine's own power cord. Damaging a "live" wire can make exposed metal parts of the power tool "live" and shock the operator.

While working, do not wear loose clothing, jewellery or open, long hair. Despite protective devices, loose objects can be snagged or caught by moving parts and lead to injury.

Do not use worn, torn or heavily clogged grinding belts. Handle grinding belts carefully and store them according to the manufacturer's instructions. Do not bend or fold grinding belts! Damaged grinding belts can tear, be flung away and injure someone.

Secure the work piece firmly. A work piece that is gripped tightly in a clamping device or vice, is more secure than if held by hand.

Hold the power tool firmly. High reaction torque can briefly occur.

Do not rivet or screw any name-plates or signs onto the power tool. If the insulation is damaged, protection against an electric shock will be ineffective.

Do not use accessories which are not specifically designed and recommended by the power tool manufacturer. Safe operation is not ensured merely because an accessory fits your power tool.

Clean the ventilation openings on the power tool at regular intervals using non-metal tools. The blower of the motor draws dust into the housing. An excessive accumulation of metallic dust can cause an electrical hazard.

Further safety warnings

Do not direct the power tool against yourself, other persons or animals. Danger of injury from sharp grinding belts.

Never lay the power tool down until the grinding belt has come to a complete stop. The grinding belt can come into contact with the surface, causing you to lose control over the power tool.

Never touch the running grinding belt. Danger of injury. Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces, such as from pipes, heaters, stoves and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock when your body has contact to grounded surfaces. Under certain conditions, components of the machine can become electrostatically charged.

The surface being worked can become very hot. Do not touch it with your hands.

Wear personal protective equipment. Depending on application, use face shield, safety goggles or safety glasses. Where appropriate, wear dust mask, hearing protectors, gloves and workshop apron capable of stopping small abrasive or workpiece fragments. The eye protection must be capable of stopping flying debris generated by various operations. The dust mask or respirator must be capable of filtrating particles generated by your operation. Prolonged exposure to high intensity noise may cause hearing loss.

Warning! Danger of fire and explosion! When grinding metals (e.g., aluminium or magnesium), dust develops that may be combustible or explosive. Do not operate the machine near flammable materials. Sparks could cause these materials to ignite.

Pay attention that other persons are not put at risk from sparking. Remove flammable materials in close vicinity. Sparking occurs when grinding metal.

Use a stationary extraction system and frequently blow out the ventilation slots. When working metal under extreme operating conditions, it is possible for conductive dust to settle in the interior of the power tool. The total insulation of the power tool can be impaired.

Always use the protective devices attached on the machine. The protective devices must be securely mounted to the machine in order to achieve maximum safety. The protective devices are supposed to protect the user from grinding particles thrown from the machine and from accidental contact with the grinding belt.

Keep bystanders a safe distance away from work area. Anyone entering the work area must wear personal protective equipment. Fragments of workpiece or of a broken accessory may fly away and cause injury beyond immediate area of operation.

Keep the power cord away from the grinding belt.

When losing control over the machine, the power cord can be cut through or get caught, and your hand or arm can come in contact with the grinding belt.

Do not run the power tool while carrying it at your side. Your clothing may get caught through accidental contact with the grinding belt and cause injuries.

Make sure that the grinding belt is mounted in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. Mounted grinding belts must be able to rotate freely. Incorrectly mounted grinding belts can become loose during operation and be thrown from the machine.

Do not operate the power tool with wet or moist hands. Before putting into operation, check the mains connection and the mains plug for damage.

Recommendation: The tool should always be supplied with power via a residual current device (RCD) with a rated current of 30 mA or less.

Handling hazardous dusts

For work procedures with this power tool where material is removed, dusts develop that can be hazardous to one's health.

Contact with or inhaling some dust types, e. g. asbestos and asbestos-containing materials, lead-containing coatings, metal, some wood types, minerals, silicate particles from materials containing stone, paint solvents, wood preservatives, antifouling paints for vessels, can trigger allergic reactions to the operator or bystanders and/or lead to respiratory infections, cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. The risk from inhaling dusts depends on the exposition. Use dust extraction matched appropriately for the developing dust, as well as personal protective equipment and provide for good ventilation of the workplace. Leave the processing of asbestos-containing materials to specialists.

Wood and light-metal dust, hot mixtures of grinding dust and chemical materials can self-ignite under unfavourable conditions or cause an explosion. Avoid sparking in the direction of the dust collector as well as overheating of the power tool and the materials being sanded, empty the dust collector/container in time,

observe the material manufacturer's working instructions, as well as the relevant regulations in your country for the materials being worked.

Hand/arm vibrations

The vibration emission level given in this information sheet has been measured in accordance with a standardised test given in EN 62841 and may be used to compare one tool with another. It may be used for a preliminary assessment of exposure.

The declared vibration emission level represents the main applications of the tool. However, if the tool is used for different applications, with different accessories or poorly maintained, the vibration emission may differ. This may significantly increase the exposure level over the total working period.

An estimation of the level of exposure to vibration should also take into account the times when the tool is switched off or when it is running but not actually doing the job. This may significantly reduce the exposure level over the total working period.

Identify additional safety measures to protect the operator from the effects of vibration such as: maintain the tool and the accessories, keep the hands warm, organisation of work patterns.

Operating Instructions.

Replacing the grinding belt (see pages 4-5)

Pay attention that the arrow directions on the inside of the sanding belt and the housing of the power tool correspond.

Pipe processing (see page 8)

Heavy vibrations of the power tool may indicate a defect. The power tool must be checked.

Guide the machine with the sanding belt against the pipe subject to sanding until the pipe is covered about halfway by the sanding belt.

Always hold the machine with both hands and at a right angle to the pipe (also applies for pipe arcs).

Sand the pipe uniformly applying a continuous length motion.

Features

The restarting protection prevents the power tool from automatically restarting if the power supply is interrupted during operation. In this case, switch off the power tool, check the power supply and then switch the power tool on again.

The electronic speed preselection enables the speed to be adapted to the respective application and the respective application tool.

Repair and customer service.

Please observe that power tools may only be repaired, maintained and inspected by qualified electricians, as improper maintenance can result in considerable hazards for the user.
