Frequently Asked Questions - Atago Petromax

How to season the Atago cooking plate?
Apply a heat-resistant oil (linseed, rapeseed, or pumpkin seed) in a thin layer to the plate. Place it on the lit grill and wait for the oil to evaporate. Let it cool, rinse with hot water, dry, and oil again. Repeat the process twice more to obtain a protective patina.
Can the plate be used indoors?
No, the plate is designed for outdoor use only. Using it indoors poses a risk of fire and suffocation from fumes.
How to clean the plate after use?
Let the plate cool, then rinse with hot water or wipe with paper towel. For burnt residues, use the Petromax Chain Mail. Never use dish soap or dishwasher. Dry thoroughly and lightly oil.
What type of oil to use for seasoning and maintenance?
Use a heat-resistant oil such as linseed, rapeseed, or pumpkin seed oil. The Petromax Maintenance Paste for cast iron and wrought iron is also suitable. Olive oil is not recommended as it does not withstand high temperatures.
Is the plate compatible with grills other than the Atago?
The plate is specially designed for the Petromax Atago grill thanks to its three-arm interlocking support. Its use on other grills is not guaranteed and may pose stability risks.
Why should acidic foods be avoided?
Acidic foods such as tomatoes, citrus fruits, or red wine can destroy the protective patina of the plate, causing corrosion and food sticking.
What to do if the plate bulges?
During the first heating, the plate may bulge. If it bulges upward, turn it completely over so that the bulge is directed downward, then proceed with seasoning.
How to add fuel during cooking?
The central opening of the plate allows easy addition of fuel (logs or charcoal). Shorten logs if necessary. Petromax Cabix Plus Briquettes are recommended.
What accessories are available for this plate?
Two accessories are available separately: the Support for Atago Cooking Plate and the Insert for Atago Cooking Plate, allowing you to expand cooking features.
What to do in case of problem or failure?
In case of material or manufacturing defects within two years of purchase, contact your dealer. You can also write to Petromax customer service at service@petromax.de.

Preparation and initial operation

The plug-in rack of the Atago Griddle Plate is assembled from the three parts supplied. It then placed on the Atago and the Griddle Plate put on top. The Atago Griddle Plate is factory-coated with food-safe paraffin oil to guard against corrosion. Your Griddle Plate must however be seasoned before you can use it. The first time the Atago Griddle Plate is heated up it will bulge. Due to the material, it is not predictable whether it will bulge upwards turn over the Griddle Plate completely so that the bulge faces downwards. You can then seas in the Atago Griddle Plate as follows:

  1. Apply a heat-resistant oil such as linseed oil, rapeseed oil or pumpkin seed oil to your Griddle Plate to create a film. Spread the oil across the entire surface using a brush, for example. Place the Atago Griddle Plate on your Atago in which you have lit a fire. Wait until the oil stops smoking.
  2. After some time, your Griddle Plate will darken in places or over a large area and the typical patina will form.
  3. Remove the Griddle Plate from the Atago and allow the plate to cool slowly. Rinse the Griddle Plate with hot water and carefully remove any residues. Then dry the plate thoroughly and re-oil it. In addition to the oils mentioned above, we recommend using the Petromax Care Conditioner for Cast and Wrought Iron for the seasoning process.
  4. Perform the seasoning process two more times: Brush oil onhto the Atago Griddle Plate, wait until the oil stops smoking, allow the plate to cool, wash it with water and carefully remove any residues.
  5. The Petromax Atago Griddle Plate is now ready for use. After each use all you need to do is rinse the plate with hot water or wipe it with kitchen paper. To guard against corrosion there should always be a thin layer of oil/fat such as Petromax Care Conditioner. The seasoning process can be repeated as often as needed.

Please note that your Atago Griddle Plate is not suitable for use with acidic foods such as tomatoes, citrus fruits or red wine as they will damage the patina.

Use and adding fuel

It is easy to add fuel through the opening in the middle of the Atago Griddle Plate. Due to the low height of the Atago logs may protrude over the edge. Please cut them to size before use. Of course, it is also easy to add charcoal through the central opening, e. g. Petromax Cabix Plus. The ridge profile of these briquettes makes combustionparticularly efficient. The fire will also burn for a long time. You can even extinguish the Cabix Plus briquettes for reuse at another time.

Care and storage

Provided you look after your Atago Griddle Plate properly, it will last for generations. You should follow a few important basic rules.

• Always heat up the greased plate and slowly so that the material has enough time to expand.

  • At first, you will need more grease to cook on the Griddle Plate. The more often it is used and the darker it becomes; the less grease will be needed as a patina forms.
  • Never clean the Atago Griddle Plate (or the plug-in rack) in the dishwasher or use detergent for cleaning! This can attack or even destroy the patina.
  • All you need to do is wipe the Griddle Plate after use with kitchen paper or clean it by rinsing it with hot water and using a standard dishwashing brush or sponge. We recommend the Petromax Chain Mail Cleaner to gently remove burnt-on residues without damaging the patina. Dry the Atago Griddle Plate thoroughly and grease it slightly to seal the surface. For this we recommend the food-safe Petromax Care Conditioner or a neutral oil or vegetable fat. Olive oil is not suitable for it cannot be heated to a very high temperature. Remember to also clean and care for the plug-in rack and the separately available accessories before storing them.
    • Always store your Atago Griddle Plate in a dry place. Never store when wet and untreated.
