Frequently Asked Questions - Irrgarten der Magier Schmidt

How to set up the game for the first time?
Carefully detach the pieces from the pre-cut boards. Insert the boards into the game board to form the magic garden. Remove the safety strip from the battery compartment of the timer. Attach the four columns to the sky and install them in the corners of the garden. Place Linus on his starting space and adjust the star under the sky using the magic button.
What is the goal of the game?
In this cooperative game, a team of two players moves Linus and his star through the magic garden to reach as many destinations (animals or objects) as possible within a maximum of 12 rounds. If you collect all 13 destination tokens in the timer, you win together.
How does a game round proceed?
At the beginning of each round, a team of magicians (Linus player and star player) is designated. Turn over a route card and place three destination tokens in the order shown. Start the timer. Both players must move Linus to the first destination, then the next ones, as quickly as possible. If the star falls, Linus stops. When the gong sounds, the round ends.
What happens if the star falls or the magic link is broken?
If the star falls (the link is broken), Linus must stop immediately. The star player replaces the magic button vertically above Linus, and the Linus player re-establishes the link by bringing the star closer. Meanwhile, time continues to run. Once the link is restored, Linus can continue.
How do you win or lose?
You win if you insert all 13 shiny destination tokens into the timer before using all route cards (12 rounds). You lose if you have used all cards without collecting all tokens.
How to increase the difficulty of the game?
You can add hurdles in the magic garden. Start without hurdles, then after each victory, add an additional hurdle up to a maximum of 8 hurdles. You can also play with one less route card (11 rounds) in expert mode.
What is the maximum number of rounds?
There is a maximum of 12 game rounds, corresponding to the 12 route cards. If you play in expert mode, you can reduce this number (for example 11 or 10).
What to do if the timer stops before the end of a round?
When the final gong sounds, the round ends immediately. Linus stops where he is. You look at how far he got on the route card: destinations reached are won (you insert their tokens into the timer), the others are shuffled back with the remaining tokens.
How to correctly move Linus and the star?
The Linus player moves Linus on the game board by sliding him. The star player moves the star using the magic button, making it hover above Linus. Both must try to move in the same direction as simultaneously as possible to maintain the magic link. The star must stay close to Linus.
Can you play with fewer than 4 players?
Yes, the game is designed for 2 to 4 players. With 2 players, they form the magician team each round and alternate roles. With 3 players, one can be the permanent Linus player or alternate according to adapted rules (the instructions do not specify, but you can rotate).

It's exam time in the magical maze! "First left, then right, then straight on fast until you find the bat at last...," comes a whisper from the magical maze. Tonight, the secret examination of the young magicians' apprentices is taking place — and little Linus is one of them! Just too bad that it's pitch black and Linus is not at all fond of the dark. But Linus is prepared for it and has delved deep into the magician's bag of tricks before the exam. To make sure that he can still see well, he gets a bright star to hover above him and light up his way through the maze.

Can you help the little magicians' apprentice Linus to reach the 13 sparkling targets in the maze and to successfully pass the magician's examination at the end?

Once before the first game

First, push all the game parts carefully out of the card. Remove the pre-punched cut outs in the game board and fit it into the maze.

Take the timer and pull the safety strip out of the button cell compartment.

Before every game

Take all the pieces out of the box and put them in the middle of the table.

1 Fix the four pillars to the sky, then insert the pillars into the corners of the maze.

2 Place Linus on his start square in the middle of the maze. Place the magic button directly above Linus on top of the sky in the middle. When you then hold Linus' star directly underneath the magic button and let go, it will stay floating magically below the sky.

Important: Turn Linus' base to the left or right, so the star is directly located under the sky, when you start the game. Note: it's not a problem, if the star will slightly touch the sky. Do not turn the base any further when reaching the maximum, otherwise the figure will break apart!

3 Shuffle the 12 route maps and place the deck face down next to the maze.
4 Shuffle the 13 sparkling target chips and place them all face down next to the card deck.
5 Place the timer at the ready.
6 You can vary the degree of difficulty of the game with the 8 hedges. It's best to play the first game without the hedges.

Adjust the difficulty level

The more hedges you build into the maze, the more difficult the game is. Once you have won a game, you can add another hedge to the maze next time. In this way, you get better from game to game until, at the end, you have built all eight hedges into the maze and have become a real master magician!

Aim of the game

In this cooperative game, a team of magicians consisting of two players always tries to reach as many targets, which show an animal or an object, as possible in the maze with Linus and the star shining above him.

If you manage to reach all the sparkling target chips within a maximum of 12 rounds (= 12 route maps). you win the game together. If not, you lose together!

Schmidt Irrgarten der Magier - Aim of the game - 1

Get to know Linus and his star

Before setting off on your magic quest, each of you should move Linus and his star around a little in the maze to practice.

One player slips into the role of Linus and move the little magician in the maze. At the same time, another player moves the star around on the sky using the magic button.

Important: Linus may only

be moved in the maze as long as the star is hovering above him. Therefore, try to pull them in one direction at the same time. Of course, you are allowed to confer and give each other instructions! But every player can always only move his own figure!

The timer has different game times so that no-one knows exactly how long a round lasts!

Course of the game

The game lasts a maximum of 12 rounds (= 12 route maps). You play clockwise in alternating teams of magicians! Before every round, you pick a team of two magicians who are active in this round:

In the first round, the youngest player plays Linus and the player to his/her left slips into the role of the star!

The team of magicians changes in the following rounds.

Example 4 players:

Round 1: players A + B

Round 2: players B + C

Round 3: players C + D

Round 4: players D + A etc.

Turn over the route map on top of the deck and place it in good view in front of you. Then turn over three sparkling target chips and place them one after another

in the direction of the arrow on the marks on the map.

Study the current route map together and discuss briefly how you want to move Linus through the maze with his star.

In the example:

1st target: Frog → 2nd target: Spider → 3rd: Ghost

- th: Crown 5th: Mouse 6th: Toadstool

Then you start the timer and the round begins. Together you try to move Linus to the first target (the frog in the example) as quickly as possible. The Linus player pulls Linus on the maze game board and the star player moves the star with the magic button so that it is always hovering as accurately as possible above Linus.

Important: Try to pull your figures at the same speed in the same direction because the magic thread between Linus and the star may never be broken!

Target reached?

When you have moved Linus successfully to a target (the piece touches the destination), you immediately try to pull Linus to the next target.

Schmidt Irrgarten der Magier - Target reached? - 1

natural_image Cartoon illustration of a yellow cone with a green frog on its side, set against a green and blue background (no text or symbols)

Special situations:

If Linus is already standing on the first target of a route map at the beginning of the round, this target counts as already reached!
In rare cases, two consecutive targets are identical. In this case, you have also been very lucky!

The magic thread breaks

If Linus loses his connection to the star (= the star falls down), the little magician must immediately stand still.

The star player places the magic button as vertically as possible above Linus. The Linus player then restores the connection between Linus and the star as quickly as possible (= the star hovers). Hurry because the clock keeps on ticking! Linus can start moving again as soon as the connection is re-established.

GONG = end of the round

As soon as the timer's final GONG sounds, the round ends and Linus must stop where he is.

Linus will begin the next round of the game from here!

How many sparkling target chips have you reached?

Look how far Linus has got on the route map. As a reward, take all of the sparkling target chips lying on the map that he has visited on the way. Push them into the slits in the timer. Super, you have collected these sparkling targets for your magician's exam!

Place the sparkling target chips from the route map that you have not reached in this round back face down with the other chips! Shuffle the other target chips briefly. The route map that has just been played is taken out of the game.

Example for a move:

Linus has succeeded in pulling the magicians' team to the frog, the spider, the ghost and the crown. The team just failed to reach the mouse because the GONG sounded first. As a reward, the team receives the two sparkling target chips spider and crown. Insert these two target chips into the timer as your reward. The toadstool target chip is p down with the chips next to the card stack. The is then taken out of the game.

Now a new round begins

Turn over a new route map from the concealed deck and take three concealed target chips and place them on the map in the direction of the arrows again.
Attention: If there are less than three sparkling target chips left, obviously only the remaining chips are placed on the map.
- Then you pick the next team of magicians and a new round begins!

End of the game

You win as soon as all 13 sparkling target chips are stuck in the timer.

Really, really super – you are an absolutely magical team and have passed your magician's exam with Linus with flying colours! Make the game more difficult next time and insert an additional hedge in the maze!

You all lose together if you have played all the route maps and have still not been able to insert all 13 sparkling target chips into the timer.

You lost this time unfortunately and failed the magician's exam. But that's no problem. Just try again immediately!

Attention: If you only have one route map left but more than three target chips (or two route maps and more than six target chips), we're afraid that you can't win the game. Just start a new game directly if you want to!

Expert version

You can make the game a little bit more difficult with the following rules: If you are already an experienced team of magicians and have already won the game a few times, you can play the game with one route map less. Take the top card off the concealed deck and put it in the lid of the box. Now you only have eleven rounds to collect all 13 sparkling target chips in the maze. Eleven route maps are no problem? Then why not try with only ten route maps next time?
