Back lash

The backlash may cause the fatal injury by cutting the backlash of the guide strip up and down at a moment when the strip suddenly touches an article. The unit should be held by both the hands with the motor running. Be concentrated on your work.

Usual causes of backlash:

  • Unintentional contact of the chain with branches or other articles;
  • The chain hit against hard articles closed in the wood (metal, plaster etc.);
  • Blunt chain;
  • Incorrect tension of the chain of the saw;
  • Cutting above the shoulders;
  • Insufficient attention at cutting;
  • Unstable posture at work;
  • Cutting in a grove made earlier.

Güde KS 400 E - Usual causes of backlash: - 1

ELECTRICAL SAFETY

Always check the supplied voltage to see that its value is equal to the plate nominal value.

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS

Your chainsaw may be used for various purposes such as cutting the fire wood preparation of fence columns, felling smack trees, disbranching, pruning at a small height and carpentry. Use the saw for cutting the wood and wooden products only.

Assembly

Before the first putting the saw in operation it is necessary to fit the guide strip, the saw chain and the chain wheel and its cover, to adjust the chain tension and pour the oil in the tank. Do not switch the saw on before it is assembled as appropriate. Read the instructions carefully.

Güde KS 400 E - Assembly - 1

Guide strip assembly/saw chain assembly (Fig. 2)

NOTICE: To get protected from the sharp edges of the chain, wear protection gloves.

  1. Put the unit on a fir ground.

  2. Release the chain tension fastening screw (9) and remove the chain wheel cover.

  3. Pull the chains (10) on the strip (11) so that the teeth are directed in the direction of turning. See the blow up Fig 2
  4. Stretch the chain until a loop is formed at the end of the strip (on the side of longitudinal hole)
  5. Pull the guide strip with the chain on the unit. Lay the chain on the chain wheel (14).
  6. The longitudinal hole (15) in the guide strip should snap over the guide pin (16). Afterwards, check the chain to see if it is sitting on the strip well.
  7. Put on the cover of the chain wheel (8).

  8. Screw the fastening screw (9), beware of the correct sitting do not draw up yet.

  9. Chain stretching screw (7) should be turned until the chain is tensioned as appropriate (it should be possible to rise it up from the guide strip by 3 mm approximately).
  10. Draw up the fastening screw (9).

Güde KS 400 E - NOTICE: To get protected from the sharp edges of the chain, wear protection gloves. - 1

It is necessary to disconnect the unit from the current source before assembly.

Check and tension of chain pre-set (Fig. 3)

The correct tension of the chain is very important and it is necessary to be checked before the work is started and in the course of cutting. The correct saw chain set-up needs sufficient time: it will be rewarded with better performance and longer service life of the saw.

Notice: A new chain and a new guide strip should be re-adjusted after some five cuts. In the period of running in, it is normal, afterwards, the intervals of adjustment will increase fast.

The chain tension is correct if the chain may be lifted above the strip by 3 mm as a maximum. The chain should not be slacked on the lower side of the strip. If the chain tension is not correct, proceed as follows:

  1. Put the unit on a firm ground.
  2. Loosen the fastening screw with hand so that the chain tension screw may be turned (7).
  3. Draw the chain tension screw (7) up with hand. The chain gets tensed. It will get tensed clockwise while loosened anticlockwise.
  4. After adjustment, move the chain on the strip here and there, GLOVES, to be sure that it is able to move freely and precisely tuned with the toothed driving wheel.
  5. Notice: If the chain may be moved with difficulties only or of it is impossible, the tension of the chain is too big and the chain should be loosened to release, turn the fastening screw to the left. Move the chain to both the sides until it moves freely.
  6. Set the tip of the guide strip horizontally with the unit and draw the fastening screw up (9).
  7. Notice: The saw chain – particularly if new - will get longer at work and its tension should be set-up at times. It is normal that the correct tension should be checked more frequently in the course of run-in.

Güde KS 400 E - Check and tension of chain pre-set (Fig. 3) - 1

Notice: The chain tension, if too little, may result in its releasing from the strip in the course of cutting or premature wear of the guide strip or the chain. Too big tension of the chain may damage the saw. Both the situations – the little and big tension of the chain may result in serious injuries.

Oil tank refill (Fig. 9)

Caution: Use only the saw chain environment friendly oil to be got at a specialised vendor!

Sufficient lubrication in operation is important to minimise the friction of the chain in the guide strip. In case of a chain automatic lubrication, it is not necessary to set the amount of oil. The closure of the oil tank should be closed tight well so that no air does not leak in. That could make a negative effect on the oil flow.

Oil level check

  1. Check the oil level before every use and every 10 minutes of operation.
  2. Put the unit on a firm ground.
  3. Wait for about 1 minute before the oil level check.
  4. The oil should reach to MIN mark on the sight glass at least (Fig 9)
  5. If the oil does not reach the mark MIN, it should be replenished.
  6. Use only the environment friendly saw chain oil.

Notice: The guide strips should be never operated without lubrication. If the saw is operated dry or lubrication is not sufficient, it

results in smaller cutting performance, shorter service life of the chain and excessive wear of the guide strip by overheating.

Güde KS 400 E - Oil level check - 1

OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS

- Plug the unit in by a suitable extension cable.

- Remove the chain cover.

  • Hold the unit with both your hands, hold both the handles. In this way, the best possible control of the unit is provided.
  • The unit is determined for cutting dry wood only.
  • If it is for the first time that you operate the unit, it is recommended to work with a sawhorse
  • Never start cutting before the saw speed is full and the tooth stop pushes into the material to be cut.
  • Always begin a new cut. Never cut onto old kerfs for the work to proceed more quickly.

Saw Start-up

  1. Provide for the chain brake unloosen. The motor cannot be started up if the chain brake is activated. The chain brake will get unstressed by pulling the brake lever (1) in the direction of motor.

Güde KS 400 E - Saw Start-up - 1

NOTICE: Mind the use of extension cables of the right type and right parameters (3 x 1,5 mm ^2 H07 RNF).

  1. The loophole to hold the extension cable is to be found in the handle with the switch and it is designed to use the cable from ripping out of the handle. To make use of this possibility, just turn the extension cable some 30~cm the end and put it in the handle. Hook on the resulting loop of double cable. Slightly pull the cable to see that it is well used in the holding loop of the handle. Connect the power cable to the extension cable socket.

  2. The saw shall be operated with both the hands (Release the brake of the chain). Your thumbs and finger should clasp both the handles.

  3. Hold the safety switch pushed with your right thumb (3) and at the same time push the OFF/ON switch (4) on the main handle (5). If you want to stop the saw, release the switch (4).

  4. Notice: As you pushed the switch (4) and the motor is running, it is not necessary to hold the safety switch (3) pushed. The safety switch (3) is a safety device to prevent an unintentional start up of the unit.

Switching motor off

With releasing the switch (4), the saw motor will stop automatically. Of you wish to restart the motor, the safety switch (3) and switch (4) If you want to restart the motor, push the safety switch (3) and switch (4) again.

Chain brake/hand protection cover

The chainsaw is equipped with the chain brake/hand protection cover, which is able to break the running chain in several milliseconds and to decrease the risk of backlash. Backlash is a fast movement of the guide strip backward with the end of the strip touching the article accidental and the strip is closed in a cut.

The hand protection cover (1) will also protect the left hand for case that the hand slips from the handle.

The chain brake is a safety device engaged when pressure is applied on the cover or if the operator strikes the lever with its hand at backlash. When the chain brake is engaged, the chain movement will stop immediately. The chain brake is to decrease occurrence of injuries in result of the backlash. However, it is not able to guarantee full safety – therefore the unit requires careful handling.

Notice: It is impossible to start the motor until the brake is engaged.

Güde KS 400 E - Chain brake/hand protection cover - 1

CAUTION: Do not use the chain brake for starting and stopping the saw in normal operation

Warning: If the saw chain and the motor does not stop after braking, have the saw repaired in a closest shop. Do not use the saw unless the chain brake works correctly.

Notice for work

Saw backlash

With shortening chains, it is necessary to put the tooth stop on the wood to be cut (see Fig.4).

Put the tooth stop firmly before every shortening chain, only than you can cut in wood with the saw. Pull the saw upwards holding the rear handle and guide it holding the front handle. The tooth stop will serve as a centre of turning. Put the saw on the front handle pressing on it slightly. Draw it back a little doing that. Put the tooth stop lower and drag the rear handle upwards (see Fig 5).

In-feed and longitudinal cuts may be done by especially trained persons (increased risk of backlash, see. Fig. 6).

To make a longitudinal cut, start the saw in as flat angle as possible. Be especially careful as the tooth stop cannot be used. When the chain is gripped in the material to be cut, the electrical chainsaw may be shot up with the guide strip side directed towards the operator. Therefore, you should cut with the lower side of the strip where possible. Then, the saw is dragged from the body to the wood to be cut (see Fug 7 and 8)

At disbranching, the electrical chainsaw should be leaned against the trunk where possible. The tip strip should not be used for cutting in that case (risk of backlash, see Fig. 6).

Beware of trunks rolling away.

Güde KS 400 E - Notice for work - 1

The backlash of the chainsaw may occur when the guide strip tip (the upper quarter in particular) accidentally touches the wood or other unfailing articles. Then the electrical saw is shot in the direction of operator (risk of injury)!

Fig. 6

If you do not cut with the tip strip, many injuries may be avoided; the saw may be shot up in a flash. When working with the saw, wear full protection equipment.

Fasten the material to be cut. Use clamping equipment to hold the material to be cut. It will make operation of the unit safe using both the hands.

Caution:

For the saw it is necessary to be running immediately before it touches the wood. Switching on (fig. 1): Push the safety switch (3) and ON/OFF switch (4). The cut wood put on the very lowest tooth of the stop (12). Pull the chainsaw by the main handle (5) upwards and cut it in the wood. Pull the chainsaw a bit backwards and put the tooth stop (12) lower a bit. Be careful when cutting the crashed wood. The saw may drag the chips with it.

Switching off: Release the ON/OFF switch. Unplug.

Pull the chainsaw out of wood only when the chain is running. Any operator cutting without a stop may be dragged forward.

Tensioned wood

Fig. 11: There is tension on the upper side of the trunk. Risk: the tree will shoot up! (A= tension, B= pressure)

Fig. 12: There is tension on the lower side of the trunk. Risk: the tree will shoot down! (A= tension, B= pressure)

Fig. 13: Strong trunks and strong tension. Risk: the tree will shoot with a flash and immense power!

Fig. 14: Lateral tension of the trunk. Risk: The wood will shoot to the side.

Tree felling

Observe all the tree felling safety regulations and proceed as follows:

Only the trees the diameter of which is smaller than the guide strip length may be felled with the chain saw! Never attempt loosening the closed saw with the motor running. The closed saw should be loosened by a wooden wedge.

Caution:

Dangerous zone: falling trees may carry other falling trees away. Therefore, the dangerous zone should be considered the double length of the tree (Fig. 15)

Caution:

Before cutting, a good escape way should be planned (A) and made free. The escape way should direct backwards, in the opposite direction from the falling (B) (Fig. 16).

Caution:

Before making the final cut, make sure that no viewers, animals or obstructions are in the direction of the tree fall.
