Frequently Asked Questions - AC210 AE Furman

How to install the AC-210A E?
The AC-210A E can be discreetly mounted on a flat-screen TV mount or in a rack using the provided brackets. The brackets can be placed inward or outward according to your needs. Then plug the unit into a grounded 230-240 VAC outlet.
What to do if the Extreme Voltage (EVS) indicator lights up?
The EVS indicator indicates that the input voltage exceeds 275 VAC. The unit automatically cuts power to protect your equipment. When the voltage returns to a safe level, the unit resets automatically. If the problem persists, check your electrical installation.
What does it mean when the Protection OK indicator is off?
The green "Protection OK" indicator turns off when the SMP circuit has suffered irreversible damage from an extreme surge. The unit still provides reduced protection but must be returned to Furman or an authorized center for repair.
What is the difference between SMP and EVS?
The SMP (Series Multi-Stage Protection) absorbs and dissipates transient voltage spikes non-sacrificially without ground contamination. The EVS (Extreme Voltage Shutdown) monitors input voltage and cuts power in case of prolonged overvoltage (above 275 VAC) to protect your devices.
Is the AC-210A E compatible with standard power outlets?
Yes, it is designed to be plugged into a grounded 230-240 VAC mains outlet. Never remove the ground pin or use an adapter that would neutralize the ground.
How to clean the AC-210A E?
Use a damp (not wet) cloth to clean the casing. Never use solvents, abrasive cleaners, and do not spill any liquid on or into the unit.
What to do in case of failure or malfunction?
First check the circuit breaker: unplug a device and press the reset button. If the problem persists, contact Furman customer service at info@furmansound.com to obtain a return authorization number before shipping the unit.
Can I plug several devices into the AC-210A E?
Yes, but the total current consumption must not exceed 10 A RMS (maximum output). Do not daisy-chain the AC-210A E with other power strips, UPS, or surge protectors as this will void the warranty.
What is the warranty on connected equipment?
The warranty covers connected equipment damaged by a transient surge, up to $500 after deduction of the buyer's insurance deductible, for a period of 3 years (subject to registration within 15 days). Damaged equipment must be inspected by Furman.
Does the AC-210A E protect against lightning?
Yes, the SMP circuit is designed to absorb and dissipate transient voltage spikes, including those caused by lightning. However, in the event of a very close direct lightning strike, the Protection OK indicator may turn off, meaning the protection has been compromised and the unit needs to be serviced.

LiFT• (Linear Filtering Technology) with zero ground contamination Compact chassis design easily attaches to any flat screen television • mount (includes hardware)

INTRODUCTION

Thank you for purchasing a Furman AC-210A E compact power conditioner, and congratulations on your choice. The AC-210A E power conditioners feature Furman's revolutionary Series Multi-Stage Protection (SMP) circuit, Extreme Voltage Shutdown (EVS), and our exclusive Linear Filtering Technology (LiFT). Together, these technologies comprise precisely what our customers have come to expect from Furman - uncompromised AC protection and purification. Our AC-210A E has been precisely engineered to exceed the critical demands of audio/video professionals, contractors, broadcasters, and musicians alike.

SMP (SERIES MULTI-STAGE PROTECTION)

Furman's SMP surge suppression virtually eliminates service calls and costly "down time". Traditional surge suppression circuits sacrifice themselves when exposed to multiple transient voltage spikes, requiring the dismantling of your system and repair of your surge suppressor. Not so with Furman's SMP. Damaging transient voltages are safely absorbed, clamped, and dissipated. Your connected equipment is protected, while your Furman protects itself!

EVS (EXTREME VOLTAGE SHUTDOWN)

Furman's trusted over-voltage (EVS) circuitry protects against prolonged overvoltage conditions. It does so by monitoring the incoming voltage and, when an unsafe condition is detected, triggering a relay which shuts off the incoming power until the overvoltage condition is corrected. The unit will reset automatically when voltage is returned to a safe level.

LiFT (LINEAR FILTERING TECHNOLOGY)

Unfortunately, traditional AC power conditioners have been designed for unrealistic laboratory conditions. Prior technologies, whether multiple-pole or conventional series-mode filters, could actually harm audio and video performance more than they help, due to the resonant peaking of their antiquated, non-linear designs. Under certain conditions, these designs can actually add more than 10 dB of noise to the incoming AC line! Worse still, lost digital data, the need to reboot digital presets, or destruction of sensitive digital converters are frequently caused by excessive voltage spikes and AC noise contaminating the equipment ground. Furman's LiFT takes a different approach, ensuring optimal performance through linear AC noise filtering with no ground contamination.

SAFETY INFORMATION

To obtain best results from your Furman AC-210A E Power Conditioner, please be sure to read this manual carefully before using.

WARNING

To reduce the risk of electrical shock, do not expose this equipment to rain or moisture. Dangerous high voltages are present inside the enclosure. Do not remove the covers. There are no user serviceable parts inside. Refer servicing to qualified personnel only.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Please read and observe all safety and operating instructions before installing your unit. Retain these instructions for future reference.
  2. Your unit should not be used near water – for example, near a bathtub, washbowl, kitchen sink, laundry tub, in a wet basement, near a swimming pool, etc.
  3. Do not place your unit near heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves or other appliances that produce heat.
  4. The unit should only be connected to a 230-240 VAC, 50Hz, 10 Amp grounded electrical outlet. Do not defeat the ground or change polarization of the power plug.
  5. Route the power cord and other cables so that they are not likely to be

walked on, tripped over, or stressed. Pay particular attention to the condition of the cords and cables at the plugs and the point where they exit your unit. To prevent risk of fire or injury, damaged cords and cables should be replaced immediately.

  1. Clean your unit with a damp cloth only. Do not use solvents or abrasive cleaners. Never pour liquid on or into the unit.
  2. Your unit should be serviced by qualified service personnel when:

  3. The power supply cord or the plug has been frayed, kinked, or cut

  4. Objects have fallen or liquid has spilled into the unit
  5. The unit has been exposed to rain or other moisture
  6. The unit does not appear to operate normally or exhibits a marked change in performance
  7. The unit has been dropped, or the enclosure damaged

  8. Your unit requires that a safety ground be present for proper operation.

Any attempt to operate the unit without a safety ground is considered improper operation and could invalidate the warranty.

  1. Do not attempt to service your unit beyond what is described in this manual. All other servicing should be referred to qualified service personnel.

OPERATION

EXTREME VOLTAGE SHUTDOWN INDICATOR

The Extreme Voltage Shutdown LED is normally off. If an input voltage in excess of 275VAC is sensed, either on initial power-up or during normal operation, the AC-210A E will shut off power and this indicator will light.

NOTE: If the mains power is above the high cutoff voltage and has caused the unit to remove power from its outlets, it cannot restore power until the mains power returns to a lower nominal level. If the main power remains high, check the source of the problem, and if necessary, change the AC source.

PROTECTION OK INDICATOR

Although the Furman SMP circuit assures protection from transient voltage spikes and surges, nature has a way of occasionally creating electrical forces that are beyond the capabilities of any TVSS device to absorb without some

degree of damage. In the rare instance that this occurs, the green “Protection OK” LED indicator located on your front panel will turn off. If this happens, some level of protection from voltage surges will remain, but the Furman’s clamping voltage rating will be compromised. The unit must be returned to Furman Sound, or an authorized Furman Service center for repair.
