USER MANUAL VTHD05 VELLEMAN

To all residents of the European Union Important environmental information about this product This symbol on the device or the package indicates that disposal of the device after its lifecycle could harm the environment. Do not dispose of the unit (or batteries) as unsorted municipal waste; it should be taken to a specialized company for recycling. This device should be returned to your distributor or to a local recycling service. Respect the local environmental rules. If in doubt, contact your local waste disposal authorities.

Thank you for choosing Velleman! Please read the manual thoroughly before bringing this device into service. If the device was damaged in transit, do not install or use it and contact your dealer.

Read all safety warnings and all instructions. Failure to follow the warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury. Save all warnings and instructions for future reference.

Wear ear protection.

The term “power tool” in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.

This device can be used by children aged from 8 years and above, and persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities or lack of experience and knowledge if they have been given supervision or instruction concerning the use of the device in a safe way and understand the hazards involved. Children shall not play with the device. Cleaning and user maintenance shall not be made by children without supervision.

If the supply cord of this power tool is damaged, it must be replaced by a specially prepared cord available through the service organization.

Keep work are clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.

Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks, which may ignite the dust or flames.

Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.VTHD05

Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.

Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.

Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.

Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.

When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.

If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.

Note: The term “residual current device (RCD” may be replaced by the term “ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI)” or earth leakage breaker (ELCB)”.

Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool when you are tired or under influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.

Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as dust mask, non-skid shoes, hard-hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.

Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is on the off position before connecting a power tool to a power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.

Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.

Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.

Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.

If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure that these are connected and used properly. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.

Power Tool Use and Care

Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the best job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.

Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on off. Any power tool, which cannot be controlled by the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.

Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or battery pack from the power tool before making any adjustment, changing accessories, or storing the power tool. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.VTHD05

Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.

Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the operation of the power tool. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.

Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.

Hold the power tool by the insulated gripping surfaces when performing an operation where the cutting accessory may contact hidden wiring or its own cord. A cutting accessory contacting a live wire may make exposed metal parts of the power tool live and could give the operator an electric shock.

Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits, etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.

Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.

Refer to the illustrations on page 2 of this manual.

Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or battery pack from the power tool before making any assembly, making adjustment, or changing accessories. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.

1. To loosen, press the shaft lock button and rotate the shaft by hand until the lock

engages the shaft preventing further rotation.

Caution! Do not press the shaft lock button while the power tool is running.

2. With the shaft lock engaged, use the collet wrench to loosen the collet nut if

necessary. The collet nut must be loosely threaded on when inserting an accessory.

3. Change accessories by inserting the new one into the collet as far as possible to

minimize runout and unbalance.

4. With the shaft lock engaged, finger tighten the collet nut until the accessory shank

is gripped by the collet. Avoid excessive tightening of the collet nut when there is no accessory inserted.

It is important that the inserted accessory be in good balance. To balance an accessory, slightly loosen the collet nut and give the accessory a ¼ turn. Retighten the collet nut and run the power tool. Continue adjusting until the best balance is achieved.

For best control in close work, hold your power tool like a pencil between your thumb and forefinger. Holding the power tool in your palm is useful for more aggressive operations such as grinding a flat surface or using cut-off wheels.VTHD05

5.3 Operating Speeds

Your power tool is equipped with a variable speed adjuster. The speed may be adjusted during operation by rotating the dial.

Certain materials require a relatively low speed because at high speed the friction of the accessory generates heat and may cause damage to the material.

Slow speeds usually are best for polishing operations employing felt polishing accessories, when working on delicate projects like woodcarving or fragile model parts. All brushing applications require low speeds to avoid wire discharge from the holder.

Hardwoods, metals and glass require high-speed operation. Drilling should also be done at high speeds.

Higher speeds are better for carving, cutting, routing, shaping, cutting a dado or rabbets in wood.

Let Speed Do the Work!

Increasing the pressure on the power tool is not the answer when it is not performing as you think it should. Perhaps you should be using a different accessory, and perhaps an adjustment in speed would solve the problem. Leaning on the power tool does not help.

6. Cleaning and Maintenance

No user serviceable parts inside. Preventive maintenance performed by unauthorized personnel may result in misplacing of internal wires and components, which could cause serious hazard. We recommend that all power tool service be performed by qualified personnel. Disconnect the power tool from the power source before servicing.

The motor in your power tool has been engineered for many hours of dependable service. To maintain peak efficiency of the motor, we recommend it be examined by qualified personnel every six months.

To avoid accidents, always disconnect the power tool and/or charger from the power source before cleaning. The power tool may be cleaned most effectively with compressed air. Always wear eye protection when cleaning tools with compressed air.

Ventilation opening and switches must be kept clean and free of foreign matter. Do not attempt to clean by inserting pointed objects through openings.

Certain cleaning agents and solvents damage plastic parts. Some of these are gasoline, carbon tetrachloride, chlorinated cleaning solvents, ammonia and household detergents that contain ammonia.

If an extension cord is necessary, a cord with adequate size conductors that is capable of carrying the current necessary for your tool must be used. This will prevent excessive voltage drop, loss of power or overheating.VTHD05
