How to turn on the Testo 511 instrument?

Briefly press the ⑥ key to turn on the instrument. The display lights up and the measurement mode opens.

How to change the displayed pressure unit?

In configuration mode (hold the key pressed during power-on), select Pressure unit with the arrow keys, then choose from hPa, mbar, Pa, mmH2O, mmHg, psi, inH2O, inHG. Confirm with the function key.

How to measure barometric pressure?

Make sure the altitude of the location is correctly set in the instrument (see configuration). Select the barom display by pressing the function key several times until 'barom' appears. The barometric pressure is then displayed.

How to measure altitude?

First set the reference altitude (altitude above sea level at the starting point) in the configuration. Then select the Altitude display. The measured altitude is relative to this reference.

What to do if the display shows 'Hi' or 'Lo'?

The display 'Hi' or 'Lo' indicates that the measured value is outside the authorized measuring range (300-1200 hPa). Check that the measured pressure is within this range. If the problem persists, change the batteries (remaining capacity <10 min).

How to change the batteries?

Slide the battery compartment cover down. Remove the empty batteries and insert two new AAA 1.5 V batteries, observing polarity. Close the cover by sliding it up.

How to clean the instrument?

Use a damp cloth with soapy water to clean the housing. Do not use solvents or harsh cleaning agents that could damage the instrument.

How to enable or disable the auto-off function?

In configuration mode, select the Auto Off function. Set to ON to enable (automatic shutdown after 10 minutes of inactivity) or OFF to disable. Confirm with the function key.

What is the accuracy of the instrument?

The accuracy is ±3 hPa (or ±1.2 inH2O) at nominal temperature of 22°C, ±1 digit. Observe the measuring range to ensure this accuracy.

The testo 511 is an absolute pressure measuring instrument. It is normally used to measure absolute pressure, e.g. for pressure compensation in velocity measurement in ducts, laboratories and production processes. Further measurement parameters are barometric (surface) pressure (= pressure at sea level) and altitude above sea level.

First steps

Inserting batteries:

1 To open the battery compartment, push the battery cover down.
2 Insert batteries (2x 1.5 V type AAA). Observe the polarity!
3 To close the battery compartment, push the battery cover back on.

2 Press (several times until the desired setting flashes.
3 Press Mode to confirm the input.
4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 for all functions. - The instrument changes to measuring mode.

Using the product

For measuring barometric (surface) pressure barom (= pressure at sea level), the following must be observed:

• the altitude of the measurement site above sea level must be known, and be set in the instrument, see chapter 'First steps', section 'Basic settings (configuration mode)'.
• The barometric pressure displayed is only correct for the altitude set, for a change of altitude, the altitude above sea level must be reset.

For measuring barometric Altitude (= altitude relating to a fixed level), the following must be observed:

• The altitude above sea level at the starting point of the measurement (= Reference altitude) must be known and be set in the instrument, see chapter 'First steps', section 'Basic settings (configuration mode)'. When entering the reference altitude, the current absolute pressure is also stored as a reference pressure.
• When carrying out the measurement at the destination, the weather conditions must be the same as when entering the reference altitude. If the weather has changed (= change of absolute pressure), a new reference value must be entered.

Press and hold until the display goes out.

Maintaining the product

Changing batteries:

1 To open the battery compartment, push the battery cover down.
2 Remove used batteries and insert new batteries (2x 1.5 V type AAA). Observe the polarity!
3 To close the battery compartment, push the battery cover back on.

Cleaning the housing:

Clean the housing with a moist cloth (soap suds) if it is dirty. Do not use aggressive cleaning agents or solvents!
