RESTRAINT SYSTEM. It is approved to regulation no 44, 04 series of amendments for35 general use in vehicles, and is suitable for most, though not all, vehicle seats.
2. Check the vehicle handbook provided by the
manufacturer. If this states that the model is suitable for use with “universal” child restraints for the correct age group, the seat can be safely installed.
3. This child restraint has undergone strict testing
to “universal” standards. These tests are more demanding than those undergone by previous models that did not feature this label.
4. If in any doubt whatsoever, please contact the
child restraint manufacturer or the dealer. CAUTION! Only suitable for vehicles fi tted with three-point/ retractor seatbelts, approved to ECE R16 or comparable standards. The TAKATA MINI child car seat has been tested and approved according to the ECE R44/04 European standard for child restraint systems. NOTE! „Universal“classifi cation only applies to the TAKATA MINI when it is secured solely via the three-point seatbelt (without attaching the TAKATA ISOFIX BASE). NOTE! Securing the TAKATA MINI via the TAKATA ISOFIX BASE and the vehicleʼs ISOFIX points, is classed as a „semi universal“ installation, and is only suitable for certain seats in certain vehicles. The vehicle list supplied provides an overview of all suitable vehicles and seats at the time of going to print. For an updated list, please see our website, www.takata-childseats.com.
en36 CAUTION! Please note that ECE R44/04 certifi cation ceases to apply if any changes are made to the TAKATA MINI without approval from TAKATA AG. The certifi cation sticker, featuring a symbol (the letter E in a circle) and certifi cation number, is found on the bottom of the TAKATA MINI (ECE). CLASS 0+ WEIGHT 2.0 - 13 kg AGE approx. 0 - 15 months NOTE! The ages stated here are intended as a guide only. Please always follow the instructions given in Section 4 – Securing your child (Step 1 – Adjust and fasten the inner padding and strap). WARNING! Children sitting in the TAKATA MINI must always be secured via the integrated strap system. CAUTION! Always secure the TAKATA MINI in place when you travel, even if the seat is empty. This can be done either via a three-point seatbelt (approved to ECE R16 standards or similar), or via the optional TAKATA ISOFIX BASE, in vehicles with ISOFIX points. This improves safety for children and other passengers. CAUTION! The TAKATA MINI may not be used on the front passenger seat in a backwards-facing position with the airbag activated. If the passenger airbag has been deactivated and the vehicleʼs manufacturer has approved the seat as suitable for use with child car seats of class 0+, you may use the TAKATA MINI in this position. When using the TAKATA MINI in this37 way, always follow the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions regarding:
- Deactivating the passenger airbag
- The suitability of the passenger seat
- Whether the seat is fi tted with ISOFIX points. The TAKATA MINI child seat may not be distributed or used for commercial purposes in the USA, Canada, Australia, Great Britain or France. CAUTION! The TAKATA MINI has been approved for use as a baby car seat. It is not suitable however, for use as a baby rocker or reclined cradle (in line with EN 12790). With the direction of travel WARNING NOTES: [MINI_004] Never leave your child unattended in the vehicle. [MINI_005] Always seat your child in the TAKATA MINI before the start of your journey – never during travel. Never remove your child from the seat while the vehicle is in motion. [MINI_006 + MINI_007] Check that the safety straps have not become twisted, and that they lie snug to the childʼs shoulders and lap, when fastening your child into the TAKATA MINI. Pull the lap belt down as far as possible, so that the lap area of your child is protected. If the lap belt runs across your child’s stomach, there is a risk of internal injuries in the event of an accident. [MINI_044] Check that the top of your child’s head is lower than the top edge of the headrest. If the headrest is too low, there is a greater risk of injury in the case of an accident. As soon as the top of your childʼs head reaches or exceeds the top edge of the seat, you should switch to the TAKATA MIDI child car seat with the TAKATA ISOFIX BASE. [MINI_045] Always ensure that the AIRPADS are positioned correctly in the inner pockets of the adjustable inner padding. Failure to observe this notice may seriously risk your childʼs safety in the event of an accident. [MINI_008] Pull the vehicle seatbelt tightly around the TAKATA MINI. If the seatbelt is too loose, your39 childʼs safety is at risk in the event of an accident. [MINI_009] Secure your TAKATA MINI in place whenever it is in the vehicle, regardless of whether a child is using it. This prevents the seat from fl ying forwards in the event of an accident or when braking sharply. [MINI_010] Take care not to damage the vehicleʼs seatbelts, or the straps of the TAKATA MINI, with knives or other sharp objects. The TAKATA MINI cannot properly protect children from injury if the straps have been cut or in some way damaged. [MINI_011] Using the TAKATA MINI in any way other than described in these instructions can cause serious injury. Do not remove any components or replace them with parts that have not been approved by TAKATA AG. [MINI_012] After an accident, replace the TAKATA MINI with a new seat. Accidents can cause damage to the seat that may not be visible to the naked eye. Failure to observe this notice may seriously risk your childʼs safety in the event of an accident. [MINI_013] The TAKATA MINI can heat up when placed in direct sunlight. To prevent burns, ensure that an adult checks all plastic and metal parts of the seat before use. [MINI_014] Position the TAKATA MINI so that static parts (plastic elements, etc.) do not get stuck in vehicle doors during normal use of the vehicle. [MINI_015] Do not leave any sharp, pointy or heavy objects around the vehicle. In the case of an accident, these objects may fl y around the cabin, injuring children or other passengers. Luggage and other potentially dangerous items should also be secured in place.
en40 Always secure your child with the TAKATA MINI straps, even if you are not using the seat in the car (e.g. when carrying your child around in it, or putting the seat down somewhere). Never leave your child in the TAKATA MINI (whether attended or not) on a raised, slanted or uneven surface, such as a table, a baby-changing table, steps or a ramp. [MINI_016] Only use the TAKATA MINI with original covers, AIRPADS and side crash pads. These are key safety components and have been developed specially for use in the seat. NOTE! Do not leave your child sitting in the TAKATA MINI for too long. We recommend a limit of one to two hours. It is very important for muscle development that children regularly change their position. As such, you should also remove your child from the TAKATA MINI when taking breaks. NOTE! The TAKATA MINI should not be used for any more than three years after purchase. Plastics deteriorate generally over time, particularly when exposed to direct sunlight. This deterioration is not always visible to the naked eye, and can compromise the performance of the seat. Should you have any other queries as to the use of this product, please contact TAKATA customer services (see Section 9 – Service).
3. BASIC INSTRUCTIONS
CAUTION! Always place the TAKATA MINI child car seat on a fl at, stable surface.41 CAUTION! Be careful that your fi ngers and other body parts do not get caught in any moving sections of the seat. Adjusting the carry handle position [MINI_017] The carry handle of the TAKATA MINI can be set in three different positions: A. Carry position B. Vehicle position C. Access position for putting children in and taking them out of the seat Step 1 – Unlock the carry handle [MINI_018] To adjust the position of the TAKATA MINI’s carry handle, simultaneously push in the grey levers on each side of the handle as far as they go. This will unlock the handle. Step 2 – Adjust and lock the carry handle Keep the levers depressed, and at the same time, move the carry handle into the desired position. Release the levers when the handle is in place. The handle is securely locked in when both levers make a click (in carry position and vehicle position only) and the levers return to their starting position. CAUTION! Whenever you change the position of the carry handle, always check that it is locked into place. To do this, lightly push the handle back and forwards with your hand, without pressing down on the levers. Carrying the TAKATA MINI There are two options when carrying the TAKATA MINI outside of your vehicle.
en42 [MINI_019_a] You can hold it with your hand in the middle of the carry handle, keeping your arm slightly bent and the TAKATA MINI by your side. [MINI_019_b] Alternatively, you can carry it in the crook of your arm. Bend your arm suffi ciently so that the carry handle rests on the inside of your elbow and stays in place. CAUTION! [MINI_020] If you are carrying the TAKATA MINI, never support it with your hip while holding the handle. In certain circumstances, this can overload the locking mechanism of the carry handle, damaging the seat, and potentially harming your child. Adjusting the position of the inner padding and shoulder strap The inner padding and shoulder straps of the TAKATA MINI should be adjusted to the size of your child, so as to provide maximum comfort and maximum protection in the case of an accident. These components can be set to four different positions, via a special adjustment mechanism. A size indicator is positioned at the front of the inner padding, showing the current position (A to D). NOTE! If you need to adjust the inner padding and/or shoulder straps, fi rst ensure that the TAKATA MINI is correctly installed in the vehicle. WARNING! [MINI_045] Always ensure that the AIRPADS are positioned correctly in the inner pockets of the adjustable inner padding. Failure to observe this notice may seriously risk your childʼs safety in the event of an accident.43 Step 1 – Unlock the adjustable inner padding [MINI_021] Open the compartment for the manual on the back of the TAKATA MINI. [MINI_022] Fully depress the slider to adjust the inner padding. Step 2 – Adjust and fasten the inner padding Keep the slider pressed down, and at the same time, slide the inner padding up or down, to adjust this and the shoulder straps to the size of your child. Then release the slider again. The slider is locked in place when it clicks into the slots on either side. CAUTION! Whenever you adjust the seat, check that the slider is locked into position again. To do this, gently try to move the slider up or down, without pushing it in. It may be necessary to adjust the inner padding further, according to your childʼs size. For further information on this, please see Section 4 – Securing your child. Loosening the straps and opening the buckle Before placing your child in the TAKATA MINI or removing your child from it, loosen the straps and open the buckle. The TAKATA MINI features a central lever that is used to loosen the straps. Step 1 – Unblock the straps [MINI_023] To loosen the straps, pull the lever up and hold it in this position. Step 2 – Loosen straps At the same time, pull the shoulder straps gently forward as far as possible. Step 3 – Open the buckle [MINI_024] To open the buckle, press the red button on it, and remove the tongues.
en44 The two tongues are held together magnetically, and can be easily separated by pulling them apart. Securing the sunshade The TAKATA MINI is supplied with a sunshade that you can attach to the seat and extend or retract as necessary. Step 1 – Attaching the sunshade [MINI_025] Attach the four push buttons on the side of the sunshade to the four buttons on the side of the TAKATA MINI cover (two on each side). Pull the rear of the sunshade (with three push buttons) over the upper end of the TAKATA MINI, and affi x it via the three buttons on the cover. The sunshade is now attached in its extended position. Step 2 – Adjusting the sun shade To retract the sunshade, or extend it again, you have to open the two small push buttons on the side (used to secure the shade in an extended position). You can then slide the front of the sunshade in, or when in a retracted position, pull it back out again. The two larger buttons on the side act as a pivots for the shade. Removing the sunshade The sunshade is secured to the TAKATA MINI via push buttons. To remove it, you must open all of the push buttons that connect the sunshade to the cover. You can then lift off the shade.
4. SECURING YOUR CHILD
NOTE! For safety reasons, children should always get in and out from the passenger side of the vehicle, or directly onto a sidewalk.45 Step 1 – Adjust and fasten the inner padding and straps Before sitting your child in the TAKATA MINI, loosen and open the straps, as described in Section 3 – Basic instructions (Loosening the straps and opening the buckle), and move them out of the way. Once your child is in the seat, place the shoulder straps over the shoulders and the lap belt over your childʼs lap, taking care not to twist or tangle the straps. CAUTION! [MINI_044] Check that the inner padding and shoulder strap connection are correctly positioned. The wings of the inner padding with the AIRPADS protect the head, and should therefore be positioned behind your childʼs head, and above the shoulders. The shoulder strap connections are correctly positioned if they are a little below your childʼs shoulders. If this is not the case, move the adjustable inner padding up or down accordingly. Step 2 – Close the belt buckle [MINI_026] To secure the straps on the TAKATA MINI child car seat, bring the two magnetic belt tongues together again. Push the tongues fi rmly into the buckle, until you hear them click into place. WARNING! Before every journey, always ensure that the tongues and buckle are locked together. You can check this by pulling the tongues up, without pressing the red button on the buckle. Step 3 – Adjust the lap belt WARNING! Pull the lap belt down as far as possible, so that the lap area of your child is protected. If the lap belt runs across your child’s stomach, there is a risk of internal injuries in the event of an accident.
en46 Ensure that the cushion behind the buckle has not slipped out of place, so that it no longer protects your child against the buckleʼs plastic components. Step 4 – Tighten the straps [MINI_027] To tighten the straps, pull the end of central pull strap forwards (not up or down). CAUTION! You can ensure that the belt tension is correct if only one fi nger fi ts beneath the shoulder straps of the TAKATA MIDI after tightening them. Step 5 – Check the side crash pads (AIRPADS) WARNING! [MINI_045] Always ensure that the AIRPADS are positioned correctly in the inner pockets of the adjustable inner padding. Failure to observe this notice may seriously risk your childʼs safety in the event of an accident. Step 6 – Check the size of the seat WARNING! [MINI_046] Before every use, check that your childʼs head is fully covered by the side bolsters of the TAKATA MINI, all the way to the top. If the head is not fully protected, your child is at greater risk in an accident. Once your child becomes too tall for the TAKATA MINI, we recommend switching to the next seat up, the TAKATA MIDI with the TAKATA ISOFIX BASE. Checklist – securing your child: Please ensure that:
- The height of the inner padding and shoulder straps are adjusted to your child (as described in these instructions).
- The lap belt does not run over your childʼs stomach.47
- The buckle and tongues are correctly secured.
- The straps fi t snugly around your child and are not twisted.
- Your childʼs head is fully covered by the side bolsters of the TAKATA MINI, all the way to the top.
- The AIRPADS are positioned correctly in the inner pockets of the adjustable inner padding. Removing your child Before you can lift your child out of the TAKATA MINI, you must loosen the straps and open the buckle. To do this, follow the instructions in Section 3 – Basic instructions (Loosening the straps and opening the buckle). You can then lift your child from the TAKATA MINI.
5. USE IN THE VEHICLE
Step 1 – Prepare the seat [MINI_028] To install the TAKATA MINI in the vehicle, the carry handle must be set upright in the carry position. Step 2 – Place it in the vehicle [MINI_029] Place the TAKATA MINI on the vehicle seat. CAUTION! The TAKATA MINI must be placed in a backwards- facing position. WARNING! [Airbag Warning] NEVER fi t the TAKATA MINI in a backwards-facing position on the front seat with the airbag activated. There is a SERIOUS RISK OF INJURY OR DEATH, and it is therefore FORBIDDEN BY LAW.
en48 Depending on the vehicle, you may be able to deactivate the airbag yourself, or may need to contact your local dealer/garage for assistance. Step 3 – Check the seatʼs position in the vehicle [MINI_029] Ensure that the front section of the TAKATA MINI touches the backrest of the vehicle seat, and that the TAKATA MINI is set at the right angle. You can check this via the sticker affi xed to the side: if the red line is pointing straight up, the TAKATA MINI is correctly positioned. You may think that a slightly less upright position would be more comfortable however, this 90-degree angle has been proven to provide optimum safety. The angle of your child, whatever the position of the inner padding or shoulder straps, lies here within what is known as the comfort zone. Step 4 – Fasten the vehicle lap belt To correctly secure the TAKATA MINI on the vehicle seat, a suitable three-point seatbelt is necessary (approved to ECE-R 16 or similar standards). [MINI_030] Pull the vehicleʼs lap belt through the blue lap belt guides on the sides of the seat. CAUTION! [MINI_031] Ensure that the vehicle seatbelt runs correctly beneath the loops of the lap belt guides. Secure the seatbelt, by fi rmly pressing the tongue into the buckle, and check that the seatbelt has not become twisted. Step 5 – Adjust the carry handle [MINI_032] Simultaneously push in the grey levers on each side of the handle as far as they can go, and move the carry handle forward into the vehicle position (centre position).49 CAUTION! Whenever you change the position of the carry handle, always check that it is locked into place. To do this, lightly push the handle back and forwards with your hand, without pressing down on the levers. Step 6 – Fasten the vehicle shoulder belt [MINI_033] Bring the vehicleʼs shoulder belt around to the back of the TAKATA MINI. Position it as shown in the illustration. CAUTION! On the side with the seatbelt buckle, the shoulder belt must run beneath the shoulder belt guide of the TAKATA MINI. On the other side, where the seatbelt rises to the upper attachment point in the vehicle, the belt must run through the other shoulder belt guide. Step 7 – Tighten the vehicle lap belt [MINI_034] To tighten the vehicle lap belt, pull the shoulder section of the seatbelt directly above the buckle, until the lap belt section is suffi ciently tight. Ensure that the lap belt is in no way twisted. Step 8 – Tighten the vehicle shoulder belt [MINI_035] Tighten the seatbelt, by pulling the shoulder section towards the upper attachment point in the vehicle. Step 9 – Check the positioning Ensure that the red line on the sticker affi xed to the side of the TAKATA MINI remains in a vertical position. If this is not the case, adjust the TAKATA MINI again. WARNING! Do not use any other force transmission points than those specifi ed in this manual and indicated on the TAKATA MINI (blue belt guides and carry handle in the vehicle position).
en50 Step 10 – Check everything is secure [MINI_036] Lightly shake the TAKATA MINI with your hands to check that it stays in place. Checklist – use in the vehicle: Please ensure that:
- The TAKATA MINI is placed in a backwards-facing position.
- The airbag on the front passenger seat is deactivated, if the TAKATA MINI is to be used there.
- The TAKATA MINI is secured via an approved three-point seatbelt (ECE-R16 or comparable standard).
- The vehicle seatbelt is fi rmly fastened.
- The vehicle seatbelt runs through the blue lap belt guides and one of the two blue shoulder belt guides, and is taut.
- The carry handle is locked in the vehicle position. NOTE! The TAKATA MINI can also be secured in your vehicle via the TAKATA ISOFIX BASE, provided the vehicle is fi tted with ISOFIX points. For further information, please see our website www.takata-childseats.com, or contact either TAKATA customer services (see Section 9 – Service) or an authorized dealer.
6. USE IN AN AIRCRAFT
The TAKATA MINI has also been approved for use in aircraft, and meets the requirements of IDNr. 0000033472, as specifi ed by the TÜV Rheinland certifi cation body (see www.tuv.com). NOTE! The „For use in aircraft“ label is located on the bottom of the TAKATA MINI, alongside the nameplate.51 The TAKATA MINI has been authorized solely for forwards-facing passenger seats, without airbags, that have been approved by the airline for use with a child car seat. CAUTION! In aircraft, the TAKATA MINI must be positioned on the passenger seat against the direction of travel, using a two-point safety belt (as described in these instructions). Throughout the entire fl ight (from the moment the cabin doors are closed until they are opened again) ensure that the TAKATA MINI is properly secured via the two-point belt. Otherwise, other passengers may be injured by the seat, should it come loose during turbulence or an emergency landing. WARNING! The TAKATA MINI may only be attached in an aircraft via a two-point seatbelt. Without exception, the seat must be secured via a three-point seatbelt or the TAKATA ISOFIX BASE when used in a vehicle. Step 1 – Prepare the seat [MINI_028] To install the TAKATA MINI in the aircraft, the carry handle must be set upright in the carry position. Step 2 – Place on the passenger seat [MINI_029] Place the TAKATA MINI in a backwards- facing position on the passenger seat. WARNING! [Airbag Warning] NEVER fi t the TAKATA MINI in a backwards-facing position on a passenger seat with the airbag activated. There is a SERIOUS RISK OF INJURY OR DEATH. Step 3 – Check the seatʼs position in the aircraft Ensure that the front section of the TAKATA MINI
en52 touches the backrest of the passenger seat, and that the TAKATA MINI is set at the right angle. You can check this via the sticker affi xed to the side: if the red line is pointing straight up, the TAKATA MINI is correctly positioned. You may think that a slightly less upright position would be more comfortable, however, this 90-degree angle has been proven to provide optimum safety. The angle of your child, whatever the position of the inner padding or shoulder straps, lies here within what is known as the comfort zone. Step 4 – Fasten and tighten the two-point seatbelt [MINI_037] To properly secure the TAKATA MINI in the aircraft, ensure that the straps of the two-point seatbelt run through the two blue lap belt guides on the side bolsters of the TAKATA MINI. Following this, fasten and tighten the belt, until the straps lie tightly against the TAKATA MINI. CAUTION! Follow the airlineʼs instructions when fastening and tightening the seatbelt. CAUTION! Ensure that the fastened buckle is positioned between the two lap belt guides of the TAKATA MINI, and that the straps are not twisted. If you have any questions on this, please ask the airline staff. Step 5 – Adjust the carry handle Simultaneously push in the grey levers on each side of the handle as far as they can go, and move the carry handle forward into the vehicle position (center position). CAUTION! Whenever you change the position of the carry handle, always check that it is locked into place. To do this, lightly push the handle back and forwards with your hand, without pressing down on the levers.53 Step 6 – Check the positioning Ensure that the red line on the sticker affi xed to the side of the TAKATA MINI remains in a vertical position. If this is not the case, adjust the TAKATA MINI again. WARNING! Do not use any other force transmission points than those specifi ed in this manual and indicated on the TAKATA MINI (blue belt guides and carry handle in the vehicle position). Step 7 – Check everything is secure Lightly shake the TAKATA MINI with your hands to check that it stays in place and the two-point seatbelt is suffi ciently tight. Checklist – use in aircraft: Please ensure that:
- The TAKATA MINI is positioned against the direction of travel.
- The TAKATA MINI is placed on a forwards-facing passenger seat without an airbag.
- The straps of the two-point seatbelt run through the two lap belt guides.
- The seatbelt straps are not twisted.
- The buckle is fi rmly fastened, in line with the airlineʼs instructions.
- The two-point seatbelt is secured tightly around the TAKATA MINI.
- The carry handle is locked in the vehicle position (central position).
Removing the covers Step 1 – Remove the shoulder straps [MINI_038] To remove the covers, you must fi rst unhook the shoulder straps from the belt connection section of the pull strap, on the bottom of the TAKATA MINI. [MINI_039] Then pull the shoulder straps entirely out of the inner padding and shoulder pads. NOTE! You cannot pull the shoulder straps out of the inner padding by only pulling at the shoulder pads. Step 2 – Open the belt buckle [MINI_040] Open the buckle, pull the tongues out, and lay the shoulder straps out of the way. Step 3 – Remove the inner padding [MINI_041] Free the two side hooks from the back plate, and pull the inner padding loose from the size indicator. Set the adjustable inner padding to its highest position, then pull the padding upwards, away from the back plate. Step 4 – Remove the side crash pads (AIRPADS) WARNING! The AIRPADS in the adjustable inner padding are not washable and must be removed from the adjustable inner padding before washing. [MINI_042] To do this, lie the inner padding down, with its front side on an even surface. You can then reach into the back through the opening of the cover. Remove the AIRPADS in the side wings of the padding, as shown in the illustration.55 Step 5 – Remove the cover [MINI_043] After removing the inner padding, return the back plate to its lowest position. Free the two plastic side hooks on the cover from the seat, and fold out the plastic elements on the edges of the cover. You can then remove the whole cover from the seat. Reattaching the covers To fully reattach all TAKATA MINI covers, please follow the instructions for „Removing the covers“ in reverse. WARNING! [MINI_045] Always ensure that the AIRPADS are positioned correctly in the inner pockets of the adjustable inner padding and that the strap system is fully functional and properly set up. Check that the TAKATA MINI has not been damaged. Should you have any queries on this matter, please contact TAKATA customer services. Failure to observe this notice may seriously risk your childʼs safety in the event of an accident. Cleaning and care The covers of your TAKATA MINI (the adjustable inner padding and seat cover) and the sunshade are removable and washable. NOTE! Always check the care instructions on the cover labels, to see whether or not they are machine washable. These instructions should take precedence over any others. WARNING! The AIRPADS in the adjustable inner padding are not washable and must be removed from the adjustable inner padding before washing.
en56 [MINI_045] Always ensure that the AIRPADS are positioned correctly in the inner pockets of the adjustable inner padding. Failure to observe this notice may seriously risk your childʼs safety in the event of an accident. Plastic components can be cleaned with water or a mild soapy solution.
