Frequently Asked Questions - U442DOCK2S Tripp Lite

Which devices are compatible with the U442DOCK2S docking station?
The station is compatible with any computer, tablet, or device with a USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 port that supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode). Computers without this mode will not be able to use video outputs.
Can I use two monitors simultaneously?
Yes, the station supports up to two monitors simultaneously via DisplayPort MST mode. However, one monitor must be connected to the Mini DisplayPort. HDMI+VGA or HDMI+HDMI combinations are not possible simultaneously. On Macs (which do not support MST), both monitors will work in mirror mode.
What is the maximum supported resolution?
The HDMI and Mini DisplayPort ports support up to 3840 x 2160 (4K) at 30 Hz. The VGA port supports up to 1920 x 1200 (1080p) at 60 Hz.
Does the docking station require an external power supply?
No, the station can be powered directly by the computer's USB-C port. However, to use the PD charging port (Power Delivery) or for more stable power with power-hungry peripherals, you can connect a USB-C charger (up to 60W) to the PD port.
Can I charge my laptop via the station?
Yes, if your laptop supports USB-C charging, plug its charger into the PD USB-C port on the station. The station then dedicates 15W to its operation and peripherals, the rest is used to charge the laptop.
How do I use the memory card readers?
Insert a Micro SD or SD/MMC card into the corresponding slot. Both slots cannot be used simultaneously; only one card can be active at a time. The card will appear as an external drive in your operating system.
Can I connect a microphone or audio headset?
Yes, the station has a 3.5mm stereo mini-jack (female) that supports both a microphone and a headset (combo headset). Simply plug in your audio device.
How do I set up the Ethernet connection?
Connect a Cat5e/6 cable between the RJ45 port on the station and your network. The connection should establish automatically. If not, go to your computer's network settings and configure the connection manually (e.g., on Mac: System Preferences > Network > Assist me).
What should I do if the external display does not turn on?
First, check that your computer supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode over USB-C. Ensure the video cable is properly connected and the monitor is powered on. If using two monitors on a Mac, note that the second monitor is not guaranteed; try reducing the resolution of the first monitor to match the second. If problems persist, restart the computer or reconnect the station.
What is the product warranty?
Tripp Lite offers a 3-year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. For returns, contact Tripp Lite to obtain an RMA number and return the product with prepaid shipping and proof of purchase.

• See Optional Accessories section for suggested cables.

- When the unit is connected to the USB-C port on your computer and to a network via Cat5e/6 cabling, a network connection will be automatically established. If no connection is made, you can manually establish one by going to your computer's network settings page. For example, on a Mac, you would navigate to the Network section found in System Preferences, click the "Assist Me" button to get to the Network Setup Assistant, then follow the prompts to establish a connection.

- When plugging and unplugging the PD adapter, connected USB devices will disconnect and then reconnect quickly. To prevent possible data loss or corruption, avoid disconnecting the PD adapter from the AC power supply while transferring data.

*See Multi-Monitor Requirements section for details.

Installation

  1. Connect USB 3.0 hub ports to USB peripherals.
  2. Connect RJ45 port to Ethernet network using UTP cable.
  3. Connect 3.5 mm mini stereo port to microphone or speaker using 3.5 mm audio cable.

  5. Charge device by connecting its USB-C charger to adapter's USB-C PD charging port.

Multi-Monitor Requirements

The U442-DOCK2-S supports the connection of two monitors simultaneously through DisplayPort MST (Multi-Stream Transport) mode. One of the monitors must be connected to the Mini DisplayPort video port. You will not be able to use an HDMI monitor and a VGA monitor simultaneously.

Take into account the following limitations when connecting two monitors at the same time.

Does the Source Computer Support DisplayPort MST?

When connecting to a USB-C source that supports DisplayPort MST, the source will read the EDID information of both connected monitors as separate displays that can be used in mirror mode or extended mode.

Multi-Monitor Requirements

When connecting to a USB-C source that does not support DisplayPort MST, such as a MacBook, SST (Single-Stream Transport) mode is used instead. Only the EDID of the first connected monitor is read by the source, forcing both monitors to display in mirror mode. The default resolution of the first monitor will be sent to the second monitor, which will display the same resolution. If the second monitor is incapable of supporting the same resolution as the first, no video will display on it. Before connecting the second monitor, the first monitor's resolution must be changed to the second monitor's resolution in order for video to display on both.

Note: The following table depicts the maximum resolution achieved on each video port, based on the connected monitors. Mac does not support DisplayPort MST; therefore, multiple monitor setups are not guaranteed.
