USER MANUAL RS 14125 METABO
Operating Instructions
1. Specified Use
When fitted with original Metabo accessories, the machine is suitable for grinding and removing concrete, screed and coatings with diamond cup wheels.
Do not use for abrasive cutting-off operations, roughing work, sanding, polishing or flap disc work.
The machine must not be used with water.
Note: The ring brush may stick when thermoelastic materials are processed.
The machine is suitable for commercial use in trade and industry.
Always use a suitable dust extraction system:
Connect a vacuum cleaner to the extractor connection piece (1).
The user bears sole responsibility for any damage caused by improper use.
Generally accepted accident prevention regulations and the enclosed safety information must be observed.
2. General safety instructions
For your own protection and for the protection of your electrical tool, pay attention to all parts of the text that are marked with this symbol!

General Power Tool SafetyWarnings
WARNING - Read all safety warnings and instructions. Failure to follow the warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.
Save all warnings and instructions for future reference! The term "power tool" in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (cored) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.
2.1 Work area safety
a) Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.
2.2 Electrical safety
a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded)
power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
b) Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
f) If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.
2.3 Personal safety
a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
b) Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
c) Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
g) If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.
2.4 Power tool use and care
a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
d) Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
e) Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool's operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
2.5 Service
a) Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.
3. Special Safety Instructions
General safety instructions for grinding: Use
a) This power tool is designed for surface grinding. Refer to all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations and specifications provided with this power tool. Failure to follow all the instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.
b) This power tool is not suitable for routing, polishing, sanding, working with roughing discs, wire brushes, parting grinder discs or flap discs. Using the power tool for tasks for which it was not designed may create a hazard and cause personal injury.
c) Do not use accessories that are not specifically designed and recommended by the tool manufacturer. Just because an accessory can be
attached to your power tool does not mean safe operation is guaranteed.
d) The rated speed of the accessory must be at least equal to the maximum speed marked on the power tool. Accessories running faster than their rated speed can break and fly apart.
e) The outside diameter and the thickness of your accessory must be within the capacity rating of your power tool. Incorrectly sized accessories cannot be adequately protected or controlled.
f) The arbour size of flanges, diamond cup wheels or any other accessory must properly fit the spindle of the power tool. Accessories with arbour holes that do not match the mounting hardware of the power tool will rotate unevenly, vibrate excessively and may cause loss of control.
g) Do not use a damaged accessory. Before use, always check accessories for splinters or cracks and check grinding wheels for cracks or signs of severe wear and tear. If a power tool or accessory is dropped, inspect for damage or install an undamaged accessory. After inspecting and installing an accessory, position yourself and bystanders away from the plane of the rotating accessory and run the power tool at maximum no-load speed for one minute. Damaged accessories will normally break apart during this test time.
h) Wear personal protective equipment. Depending on the application, use a face shield, safety goggles or safety glasses. As appropriate, wear a dust mask, hearing protectors, gloves and workshop apron capable of stopping small abrasive or workpiece fragments. The eye protection must be capable of stopping flying debris generated by various operations. The dust mask or respirator must be capable of filtering particles generated by your operation. Prolonged exposure to high intensity noise may cause hearing loss.
i) Keep bystanders a safe distance away from your work area. Anyone entering the work area must wear personal protective equipment. Fragments of a workpiece or broken accessory may fly into the air and cause injury beyond the immediate area of operation.
j) Hold power tool by insulated gripping surfaces only, when performing an operation where the cutting accessory may contact hidden wiring or its own cord. A cutting accessory that comes in contact with a "live" wire may render exposed metal parts of the power tool "live" and give the operator an electric shock.
k) Position the cord clear of the spinning accessory. If you lose control, the cord may be cut or snagged and your hand or arm may be pulled into the spinning accessory.
I) Never lay the power tool down until the accessory has come to a complete stop. The spinning accessory may catch the surface and pull the power tool out of your control.
m) Do not run the power tool while carrying it at your side. Accidental contact with the spinning

accessory could snag your clothing, pulling the accessory into your body.
n) Regularly clean the power tool's air vents. The motor's fan draws dust into the housing.
o) Do not operate the power tool near flammable materials. Sparks could ignite these materials.
p) Do not use accessories that require liquid coolants. Using water or other liquid coolants may result in electrocution or shock.
3.1 Kickback and RelatedWarnings
Kickback is the sudden response to an accessory pinching or jamming while rotating. Pinching or jamming causes the rotating accessory to stop abruptly, which in turn forces the uncontrolled power tool in the direction against the accessory's rotation at the point of jamming.
Kickback is the result of power tool misuse and/or incorrect operating procedures or conditions. It can be avoided by taking proper precautions as given below.
a) Maintain a firm grip on the power tool and position your body and arm to allow you to resist kickback forces. Always use the auxiliary handle for maximum control over kickback or torque reaction during start-up. The operator can control torque reactions or kickback forces, if proper precautions are taken.
b) Never place your hand near the rotating accessory. The accessory may kickback over your hand.
c) Do not allow your body to enter the area where the power tool would move if kickback occurs. Kickback will propel the power tool in the opposite direction of the accessory's movement at the point of jamming.
d) Use special care when working around corners, sharp edges etc. You must prevent accessories from bouncing off the power tool and becoming jammed. A rotating accessory tends to jam around corners and sharp edges and also if bouncing occurs, thus causing loss of control or kickback.
e) Do not attach a saw chain woodcarving blade or toothed saw blade. Such blades create frequent kickback and loss of control.
3.2 SafetyWarnings Specific for Grinding with Diamond Cup Wheels:
a) Use only wheel types that are recommended for your power tool and the specific guard designed for the selected wheel. Wheels for which the power tool was not designed cannot be adequately guarded and are unsafe.
b) The safety guard must be securely attached to the power tool. Always direct the power tool so that the wheel is not openly exposed to the operator. The guard helps to protect the operator from broken fragments, accidental contact with the wheel and sparks that could ignite clothing.
c) Wheels must be used only for recommended applications.
d) Always use undamaged wheel flanges that are the correct size and shape for your selected accessories. The correct flanges support the accessories.
3.3 Additional Safety Instructions
WARNING - Always wear protective goggles.
Wear a suitable dust protection mask.
Observe the specifications of the accessory manufacturer! Protect the accessories from grease and physical impact.
Accessories must be stored and handled with care in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
The workpiece must be seated firmly and be secured against slipping, e.g. using clamps. Large workpieces must be supported adequately.
If accessories with threaded inserts are used, the end of the spindle may not touch the base of the hole on the grinding tool. Make sure that the thread in the accessory is long enough to accommodate the full length of the spindle. The thread in the accessory must match the thread on the spindle. See page 3 and chapter 13. Technical Specifications for more information on the spindle length and thread.
Impurities that manage to enter the machine may block the switching
mechanism. This is why, when the machine is running, it is necessary to blow compressed air through the rear ventilation slots of the machine regularly, frequently and thoroughly. The machine must be held firmly in this case.
Dust from material such as paint containing lead, some wood species, minerals and metal may be harmful. Contact with or inhalation of the dust may cause allergic reactions and/or respiratory diseases to the operator or bystanders.
Certain kinds of dust are classified as carcinogenic, such as quartz, oak and beech dust, especially in conjunction with additives for wood conditioning (chromate, wood preservative).
- For efficient dust collection, use a suitable Metabo vacuum cleaner together with this power tool.
- The workplace must be well ventilated.
- The use of a dust mask of filter class P2 is recommended.
Follow national requirements for the materials you want to work with.
Material containing asbestos must only be treated by specialists.
When working in dusty conditions, ensure that ventilation openings are not blocked. If it becomes necessary to remove dust, first disconnect the power tool from the mains supply (use non-metallic objects) and avoid damaging internal components.
Damaged, eccentric or vibrating tools must not be used.
Avoid damage to gas or water pipes, electrical cables and load-bearing walls (static).
Connect a FI circuit-breaker with max. release current (30mA) upstream when using the machine outdoors.
Pull the plug out of the socket before making any adjustments, converting or servicing the machine.
A damaged or cracked auxiliary handle must be replaced. Never operate a machine with a defective auxiliary handle.
A damaged or cracked safety guard must be replaced. Never operate a machine with a defective safety guard.
Only use accessories that are surmounted by brushes of the safety guard.

5. Initial Operation
Before plugging in the machine, check that the rated mains voltage and mains frequency, as specified on the rating label, match your power supply.
5.1 Attaching the auxiliary handle
Always work with the auxiliary handle attached (4)! Attach the auxiliary handle as shown.
See illustration A on page 2.
- Fit locking discs (5) to the left and right of the gear housing.
- Fit the auxiliary handle (4) on the gear housing.
- Insert the thumb screws (3) to the left and right of the auxiliary handle (4) and turn gently.
- Adjust the auxiliary handle to the required angle (4).
- Manually tighten the thumb screws (3) to the left and right.
5.2 Dust extraction
Always use a suitable dust extraction system: Connect a vacuum cleaner to the extractor connection piece (1).
For optimal dust extraction, use the connecting sleeve 6.30796.
We recommend using an antistatic suction hose with diameter 35mm
6. Attaching the accessory
Disconnect the mains plug before changing any accessories. The machine must be switched off and the spindle must be at a standstill.
6.1 Locking the spindle
Press in the spindle locking knob (12) only when the spindle is stationary!
- Press in the spindle locking button (12) and turn the
spindle (10) by hand until you feel the spindle locking button engage.
6.2 Fitting/removing the diamond cup wheel
See illustration B on page 2.
To fit:
- Fit the support flange (9) on the spindle. (10) The flange should not turn on the spindle when properly attached.
- Lay the diamond cup wheel (8) on the support flange (9) so that it lies flat along the support flange.
- The two sides of the clamping nut (7) are different. Screw the clamping nut onto the spindle so that the band of the clamping nut (7) is facing upward.
- Lock the spindle (see chapter 6.1). Turn the clamping nut (7) clockwise using the 2-hole spanner (6) to secure.
To remove:
- Lock the spindle (see chapter 6.1). Turn the clamping nut (7) anticlockwise using the 2-hole spanner (6) to unscrew.
7. Use 8. Cleaning, Maintenance
7.1 Working close to walls
To open and close the segment: switch off the machine and pull the mains plug. The accessory must be stationary.
Only raise the segment (13) when working close to walls. Otherwise, the segment must be lowered.
The open area of the safety guard must face the direction of the wall.
7.2 Setting the speed (RS 14-125)
Set the optimum speed on the setting wheel (20), depending on the application.
A wheel setting of between 4 and 6 is suitable for most applications.
7.3 Switching On and Off
Always guide the machine with both hands.
Switch on first, then guide the accessory towards the workpiece.
The machine must not be allowed to draw in additional dust and shavings. When switching the machine on and off, keep it away from dust deposits. After switching off the machine, only set it down when the motor has come to a standstill.
Avoid inadvertent starts: always switch the tool off when the plug is removed from the mains socket or if there has been a power cut.
In continuous operation, the machine continues running if it is forced out of your hands. Therefore, always hold the machine with both hands using the handles provided, stand in a safe position and concentrate on the work.
RS 14-125:
Switching on: Push the slide switch (18) forward. For continuous activation, now tilt downwards until it engages.
Switching off: Press the rear end of the slide switch (18) and release.
RS 17-125:
Torque activation
Switching on: Press in lock (16) and then press trigger (17). Release the lock (16).
Switching off: Release the trigger (17).
Continuous operation:
Switching on: Press in lock (16) and hold in. Press and hold in trigger (17). The machine is now switched on. Now release the trigger (17). Then release the lock (16) to hold the trigger in position and prevent deactivation (continuous operation).
Switching off: Press the trigger (17) and release.
Motor cleaning: The machine must be vacuumed regularly, frequently and thoroughly through the ventilation slots using a suitable vacuum cleaner. The machine must be held firmly in this case.
Replacing the spring-mounted ring brush: Replace worn brushes for optimal dust extraction. Replacement brush set: Order No. 6.28214.
9. Troubleshooting
RS 14-125:
The electronic signal display (19) lights up and the load speed decreases. The coil temperature is too high! Run the machine in idling mode until the electronics signal indicator switches off.
The electronic signal display (19) flashes and the machine does not start. The restart protection is active. If the mains plug is inserted with the machine switched on, or if the current supply is restored following an interruption, the machine does not start up. Switch the machine off and on again.
RS 17-125:
- Restart protection: If the mains plug is inserted with the machine switched on, or if the current supply is restored following an interruption, the machine does not start up. Switch the machine off and on again.
- Overload protection: There is a reduction in load speed. The coil temperature is too high! Allow the machine to run at idle speed until it has cooled down.
- Switching on the machine reduces the voltage briefly. Unfavourable mains power conditions may have a detrimental effect on other machines. Network impedances less than 0.4 ohms should not cause malfunctions.

12. Environmental Protection
The sanding dust generated may contain hazardous materials: do not dispose of this dust with household waste, but at a special collection point for hazardous waste.
Observe national regulations on environmentally compatible disposal and on the recycling of disused machines, packaging and accessories.
