Appropriate knowledge of the machinery and careful behaviour when working help to minimise the remaining risks. WARNING! During operation, this power tool generates an electro magnetic field. This field may, under certain circumstances, influence active or passive medical implants. In order to reduce the risk of serious or deadly injuries, we recommend persons with such a medical implant to consult their doctor and the manufacturer of the medical implant before using the power tool. 5 – General safety instructions for handling power tools WARNING! Read all safety warnings and all instructions. Failure to follow the warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury. Save all warnings and instructions for future reference. The term “power tool” in the warnings refers to your mains operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool. 1 Work area a Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered and dark areas invite accidents. b Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, 5403550-Handkreiss-man 29.01.14 08:49 Seite 4142 gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes. c Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control. 2 Electrical Safety a Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock. b Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded. c Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock. d Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock. e When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock. f If it is not possible to avoid using the electrical tool in a damp environment, use a residual current circuit-breaker. The use of a residual current circuit-breaker reduces the risk of an electrical shock. 3 Personal safety a Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury. b Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as dust masks, non- skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries. c Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off- position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents. d Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury. e Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations. f Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts. 5403550-Handkreiss-man 29.01.14 08:49 Seite 4243 g Keep handles dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery handles do not allow for safe handling and control of the tool in unexpected situations. h If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of these devices can reduce dust related hazards. 4 Power tool use and care a Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed. b Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
Disconnect the plug from the power source before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally. d Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users. e Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool’s operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools. f Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control. g Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation. 5 Service a Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained. b If connection cables are damaged, they must – in order to reduce the risks – be replaced by the manufacturer or by their customer service representative. 6 – Safety instructions relating specifically to the equipment
- Saw blades made of high-speed steel may not be used.
- Saw blades that do not correspond to the characteristic data specified in this operating manual may not be used.
- Ensure that all of the moving parts of the saw blade protector are able to move without catching. 5403550-Handkreiss-man 29.01.14 08:49 Seite 4344
- The splitting wedge should always be used and be set correctly, except when carrying out insertion cuts.
- Only use sharp saw blades and suitable accessories.
- Fix small wooden items in place firmly before processing. Never hold them by hand.
- Do not use flanges/flange nuts with drilled holes that are larger or smaller than those of the saw blade.
- Do not brake the saw blade by hand.
- The machine is not to be used for stationary operation. Keep your hands well away from the sawing zone and the saw blade! Use your other hand for the additional handle or the motor housing. If both hands are holding the saw, they cannot be injured by the saw blade.
- Do not put your hand under the workpiece. The safety guard cannot protect your hands from the saw blade under the workpiece.
- Select the depth of the cut to match the thickness of the workpiece. Less than the height of one tooth should be visible beneath the workpiece.
- Never hold the workpiece with your hand or rest it on your leg. Secure the workpiece on a steady surface. It is important to secure the workpiece to reduce the risk of body contact, jamming of the saw blade or loss of control.
- During work where there is a danger of damaging concealed wires or the mains cable of the machine, hold the machine only by the insulated handles. Contact with live wires causes the metallic parts of the machine to become live and cause electric shock.
- When cutting lengthwise, always use a stop or a straight guiding edge. This improves the accuracy of the cut and reduces the risk of saw blade jamming.
- Always use saw blades of the right size with seating holes of the correct size and shape (e.g. star-shaped or round). Saw blades which do not fit correctly into the saw are not correctly balanced and cause loss of control.
- Never use damaged or incorrect saw-blade washers or screws. The saw-blade washers and screws supplied were designed specially for your saw to ensure optimum safety and performance. Causes and prevention of kickback:
A kickback is a sudden backward impact resulting from a jamming or wrongly adjusted saw blade and causes an uncontrolled saw to spring out of the workpiece towards the user. When the saw blade jams or locks in the cut gap, it blocks and the force of the motor causes it to jump back towards the user. If the saw blade twists in the cut or is incorrectly aligned, the teeth of the rear edge of the blade may lock in the workpiece, lifting the blade out of the cut and back towards the user. This kickback is caused by incorrect use of the saw. It can be prevented by suitable precautions as described below.
- Hold the saw firmly with both hands and hold your arms in a position where they are able to 5403550-Handkreiss-man 29.01.14 08:49 Seite 4445 withstand kickbacks. Always stand to the side of the saw blade. Never bring the saw blade into line with your body. A kickback may cause the saw to jump backwards unexpectedly; however, the user can control the effects by exercising due care.
- Should the saw blade become stuck or the sawing operation be interrupted for any other reason, release the ON/OFF switch and hold the saw steady in the workpiece until the blade has come to a complete rest. Do not attempt to remove the saw from the workpiece or to pull it backwards as long as the blade is moving or a kickback could happen. Locate the cause of the saw blade’s jamming and take appropriate measures to remedy it.
- If you wish to restart a saw whose blade is stuck in the workpiece, first centre the blade in the cut and ensure that the teeth of the saw are not locked in the workpiece. If the saw blade is jammed it may move out of the workpiece or cause a kickback when the saw is re-started.
- Ensure that larger boards are well supported to reduce the risk of a kickback caused by a jamming saw blade. Large boards may sag due to their own weight. Boards must be supported on both sides, both in the vicinity of the gap and at the edge.
- Do not use blunt or damaged saw blades. Blades with blunt or wrongly aligned teeth, cause excess friction because the cut gap is too narrow, and this in turn causes the blade to jam and kick back..
- Before starting work, tighten the setting devices for cut depth and cut angle. If the settings should shift during sawing, the saw blade may jam, causing a kickback.
- Take particular care when making a „sink cut“ into a concealed area, e.g. into an existing wall. The sinking saw blade may jam in concealed objects thereby causing a kickback.
- Before use, check that the lower guard closes properly. Do not use the saw if the lower guard does not move freely or does not close immediately. Do not use the saw if the lower guard does not move freely or does not close immediately. Should the saw fall to the ground accidentally, the lower guard may be bent or damaged. Open the guard with the pull-back lever and ensure that it moves freely and never touches the saw blade or other parts of the saw at any cutting angle or depth.
- Check the function of the spring for the lower guard. If the guard and the spring do not work properly, have the machine inspected and repaired before using it again. Damaged parts, encrusted material or accumulations of chippings may cause the guard to operate with delay.
- Open the guard by hand only in case of special cuts such as „sink cuts“ or „angle cuts“. Open the lower guard using the pull-back lever and release it as soon as the blade has penetrated the workpiece. For all other sawing operations, the lower guard must function automatically.
- When laying the saw aside on the bench or floor, ensure that the blade is covered by the guard. The unprotected spinning blade causes the saw to move contrary to cutting 5403550-Handkreiss-man 29.01.14 08:49 Seite 4546 direction and damages anything in its path. Remember that the saw blade continues to spin freely for a while after the switch is released.
- Use the correct splitting wedge for the saw blade in use. The splitting wedge must be thicker than the body of the saw blade, but thinner than the width of the teeth.
- Adjust the splitting wedge as described in the operating instructions. Incorrect thickness, position and alignment may be the reason why the splitting wedge does not effectively prevent a kickback.
- Always use the splitting wedge except for sink cuts. Re-fit the wedge immediately after the sink cut. The splitting wedge hinders sink cutting and may cause the saw to kick back.
