WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF CHRISTIAAN VAN DER KLAAUW ASTRONOMICAL WATCHES

Congratulations with your purchase of a Christiaan van der Klaauw Astronomical Watch. Christiaan van der Klaauw has been making superb watches - unique, exclusive and innovative - for more than 40 years. All these watches are made by hand by passionate watchmakers, with a central theme that appeals strongly to the imagination: astronomy. This is a logical relationship for Christiaan van der Klaauw - after all, time has always been determined on the basis of astronomical values. So we can justifiably state in connection with our watches: Astronomy, time in its purest form.

Your wristwatch is fitted with an automatic movement. When you wear your watch, the movements of your wrist are automatically converted into the energy required to operate your watch. You can also wind the watch by hand. If you do not wear the watch, we advise you to place it in a watch winder.

Turn clockwise.

Exposing our watches to water is not recommended. Your watch may be damaged if you wear it while swimming or in the shower.

Adjustment

The settings of your watch can be adjusted by using the different positions of the crown and the push button (P).

The crown has three positions:

this is the position of the crown when you are wearing the watch. In this position, you can wind the watch by hand.
① setting the tides.
② setting the time.

The Tides

Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the combined effects of gravitational forces exerted by the Moon, Sun, and rotation of the Earth. There are multiple types of sea tides. In most locations you will find the 'principal lunar semi-diurnal' sea tide. The period for one rise and fall of the sea level is about 12 hours, 25 minutes and 14 seconds.

Setting the tides

You can set the tides according to the location you wish to record on your watch. Of course the selected

coast has to have a twice-daily tide (the internet is a useful tool to find this information).

The best thing to do is to synchronise the tide indicator with the highest or the lowest level of the water. For example: if you have selected a coastal high tide at 14:15 hours, turn your tide indicator to the highest water level at that time. (the internet is a useful tool to find the times for high and low tides for the coast chosen).

In order to set the correct tide carefully pull the crown out by one click ① .Turn the crown so that

the water in the window moves until it has reached the correct tide (high or low). Then push the crown in completely.

Setting the time

Pull out the crown as far as possible, position ②. Now move the hands forward until the correct time is reached. Once the hands show the right time, push the crown in completely.

Setting the moon phase

To set the watch to the correct moon phase, use the enclosed accessory to push in the push button located at the 9 o'clock position on the left-hand side of the watch case.

Press so that the moon ball begins to turn until it has reached the correct moon phase. (The internet is a useful tool to find the right moon phase).

Functionalities

The moon phases are shown three dimensionally at the 6 o'clock position. If the moon is completely black, it is a new moon. This is followed by the waxing moon up to the first quarter, with the right-hand side of the moon visible. After that, the full moon is displayed, followed by the waning moon up to the last quarter, with the left-hand side of the moon visible. The lunar cycle ends with the new moon, and then starts again at the beginning.
