CAUTION The STANDBY/ON switch on this unit will not completely shut off all power from the AC outlet.
Since the power cord serves as the main disconnect device for the unit, you will need to unplug it from the AC outlet to shut down all power. Therefore, make sure the unit has been installed so that the power cord can be easily unplugged from the AC outlet in case of an accident. To avoid fire hazard, the power cord should also be unplugged from the AC outlet when left unused for a long period of time (for example, when on vacation).

• Incorrect use of batteries may result in such hazards as leakage and bursting. Observe the following precautions:
– Never use new and old batteries together. – Insert the plus and minus sides of the batteries properly according to the marks in the battery case. – Batteries with the same shape may have different voltages. Do not use different batteries together. – When disposing of used batteries, please comply with governmental regulations or environmental public instruction’s rules that apply in your country /area. – When inserting the batteries, make sure not to damage the springs on the battery’s (–) terminals. This can cause batteries to leak or over heat. WARNING Do not use or store batteries in direct sunlight or other excessively hot place, such as inside a car or near a heater. This can cause batteries to leak, overheat, explode or catch fire. It can also reduce the life or performance of batteries.
Installing the receiver
• When installing this unit, make sure to put it on a level and stable surface. Don’t install it on the following places: – on a color TV (the screen may distort) – near a cassette deck (or close to a device that gives off a magnetic field). This may interfere with the sound. – in direct sunlight – in damp or wet areas – in extremely hot or cold areas – in places where there is vibration or other movement – in places that are very dusty – in places that have hot fumes or oils (such as a kitchen)
Do not climb or sit on this unit. Be especially careful when children are around. The unit may be damaged, or may fall over causing injury. Pioneer is not responsible for any accidents or damage that result from improper installation, misuse or modification of the product, or natural disasters.

Connecting a TV and playback component
• Install the center speaker below the TV so that the sound of the center channel is localized at the TV screen.
• Do not place the center speaker on top of the TV, the speaker may fall from the TV due to external shocks such as earthquakes, endangering those nearby or damaging the speaker.
• The subwoofer and other speakers in this system cannot be used nearby a CRT-based TV or color monitor. When using this kind of CRT-based TV or color monitor, install the speakers away from the display device. Any other device liable to be influenced by magnetism (floppy disk drive, cassette tape recorder, video tape player, etc.) should also be kept at a distance from the subwoofer and other speakers.
• Do not attach center speaker and subwoofer to the wall or ceiling, as they may cause injury in the event of a fall.
The receiver will work with just two stereo speakers (the front speakers in the diagram) but using at least three speakers is recommended, and a complete setup is best for surround sound.
To achieve the best possible surround sound, install your speakers as shown below. 5.1 channel surorund system:
The unit is a full-fledged AV receiver equipped with an abundance of functions and terminals. It can be used easily after following the procedure below to make the connections and settings.

VENTILATION CAUTION When installing this unit, make sure to leave space around the unit for ventilation to improve heat radiation (at least 20 cm at top, 10 cm at rear, and 10 cm at each side).
WARNING Slots and openings in the cabinet are provided for ventilation to ensure reliable operation of the product, and to protect it from overheating. To prevent fire hazard, the openings should never be blocked or covered with items (such as newspapers, table-cloths, curtains) or by operating the equipment on thick carpet or a bed.
Connecting the speakers
Make sure you connect the speaker on the right to the right (R) terminal and the speaker on the left to the left (L) terminal. Also make sure the positive and negative (+/–) terminals on the receiver match those on the speakers.

Push open the tabs and insert exposed wire. Release the tabs.

COAXIAL OPTICAL ASSIGNABLE CAUTION
• These speaker terminals carry HAZARDOUS LIVE voltage. To prevent the risk of electric shock when connecting or disconnecting the speaker cables, disconnect the power cord before touching any uninsulated parts. • Make sure that all the bare speaker wire is inserted fully into the speaker terminal. If any of the bare speaker wire touches the back panel it may cause the power to cut off as a safety measure. • Do not connect the supplied subwoofer to any amplifier other than the one supplied with this system. Connection to any other amplifier may result in malfunction or fire.

Connecting a TV and playback component
If you have an HDMI or DVI (with HDCP) equipped component (Blu-ray Disc player, etc.), you can connect it to this receiver using a commercially available HDMI cable. • The following connection/setting is required to listen to the sound of the TV over this receiver. – If the TV does not support the HDMI Audio Return Channel function, connect the receiver and TV with audio cables (as shown). – If the TV supports the HDMI Audio Return Channel function, the sound of the TV is input to the receiver via the HDMI terminal, so there is no need to connect an audio cable. In this case, set ARC at HDMI Setup to ON. – The ARC function may not operate even with the above connections. If this is the case, connect the receiver and the TV with an audio cable. – Please refer to the TV’s operation manual for directions on connections and setup for the TV. HDMI/DVI-compatible components (Blu-ray Disc player, etc.)
HDMI IN This receiver is not loaded with a video converter.
When you use HDMI cables for connecting to the input device, the same cables should be used for connecting to the TV. The signals input from the analog (composite) video input of this unit will not be output from the HDMI OUT.
Connect the AM loop antenna and the FM wire antenna as shown below.
About video outputs connection
DIGITAL AUDIO OUT OPTICAL If the TV does not support the
HDMI Audio Return Channel function, this connection is required to listen to the TV sound over the receiver.

Plugging the receiver
Only plug in after you have connected all your components to this receiver, including the speakers. U.K. model
Plug the supplied power cord into the AC IN socket on the back of the receiver.
Plug the other end into a power outlet.

European, Australia and New Zealand models
Plug the AC power cord into a convenient AC power outlet.
• Handle the power cord by the plug part. Do not pull out the plug by tugging the cord, and never touch the power cord when your hands are wet, as this could cause a short circuit or electric shock. Do not place the unit, a piece of furniture, or other object on the power cord or pinch the cord in any other way. Never make a knot in the cord or tie it with other cables. The power cords should be routed so that they are not likely to be stepped on. A damaged power cord can cause a fire or give you an electric shock. Check the power cord once in a while. If you find it damaged, ask your nearest Pioneer authorized independent service company for a replacement. • Do not use any power cord other than the one supplied with this unit. • Do not use the supplied power cord for any purpose other than that described below. • The receiver should be disconnected by removing the mains plug from the wall socket when not in regular use, e.g., when on vacation.
Here are the basic instructions for playing a source (such as a Blu-ray Disc) with your home theater system. • The following buttons are not used with this receiver:

Listening in Standard surround sound
TUNE PRESET This receiver provide basic surround sound for stereo and multichannel sources.
While listening to a source, press ALC/STANDARD repeatedly to select a listening mode.
BAND RETURN MUTE B Listening in Advanced surround sound
The Advanced surround effects can be used for a variety of additional surround sound effects.
While listening to a source, press ADV SURR repeatedly to select a listening mode.
Use VOLUME +/– to adjust the volume level.
Enjoy a variety of sounds.
• Sound can be switched off by pressing MUTE button.
Press S.RETRIEVER to switch the Sound Retriever feature ON or OFF.
DISP If you’re playing a Dolby Digital or DTS surround sound Blu-ray/DVD disc, with a digital audio connection, you should hear surround sound. If you’re playing a stereo source or if the connection is an analog audio connection, you will only hear sound from the front left/right speakers in the default listening mode.
TUNE TOP MENU Press input function buttons to select the input function you want to play.
VOL Acous.EQ S.RETRIEVER PHASE Switch the TV input to the input that connects this receiver.
For example, if you connected this receiver to the VIDEO jacks on your TV, make sure that the VIDEO input is now selected.
• The input of the receiver will switch over, and you will be able to operate other components using the remote control.
• The input source can also be selected by using INPUT SELECT buttons on the remote control, or by using the front panel INPUT SELECTOR dial. In this case, the remote control won’t switch operational modes. • Press SIGNAL SEL to select the audio input signal corresponding to the source component (HDMI, digital or analog).

• When audio data is removed during the compression process, sound quality often suffers from an uneven sound image. The Sound Retriever feature employs new DSP technology that helps bring CD quality sound back to compressed 2-channel audio by restoring sound pressure and smoothing jagged artifacts left over after compression.

• The input of the receiver will switch over, and you will be able to operate other components using the remote control. To operate the receiver, first press RECEIVER ( 7 ), then press the appropriate button to operate.
Use the "A" buttons to adjust the settings of this receiver and operate other devices.

Listening to the radio
Press TUNER to select the tuner.
If necessary, press BAND to change the band (FM or AM).
Press TUNE to tune to a station.
• Press and hold TUNE for about a second. The receiver will start searching for the next station. If you’re listening to an FM station but the reception is weak, press BAND to select FM MONO and set the receiver to the mono reception mode.
Saving station presets
If you often listen to a particular radio station, it’s convenient to have the receiver store the frequency for easy recall whenever you want to listen to that station.
Canceling the Auto Power Down
(European and U.K. models) When this receiver is not used over a period of several hours, it will power down automatically. The automatic power-off timer is set to six hours under factory settings, and the timing can be changed or the power-off function switched off altogether. “The Auto Power Down menu”
Press TOOLS while receiving a signal from the station you want to store.
Press PRESET (or number buttons) to select the station preset you want, then press ENTER.
The display shows PRESET, then a blinking MEM and station preset.
The preset number stop blinking and the receiver stores the station.
Listening to station presets
You will need to have some presets stored to do this.
Press PRESET (or number buttons) to select the station preset you want.
