CAUTION
CAUTION, used with the safety alert symbol, indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in minor or moderate injury.
CAUTION
CAUTION, used without the safety alert symbol, indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in harm to your pet.
WARNING
- Not for use with aggressive dogs. Do not use this product if your dog is aggressive, or if your dog is prone to aggressive behaviour. Aggressive dogs can cause severe injury and even death to their owner and others. If you are unsure whether this product is appropriate for your dog, please consult your veterinarian or certified trainer.
- Risk of explosion if battery is replaced by an incorrect type. Do not short circuit, mix old and new batteries, dispose of in fire, or expose to water. When batteries are stored or disposed, they must be protected from shorting. Dispose of spent batteries properly.
- The PetSafe® Bark Control Collar is not a toy. Keep away from the reach of children. Use it only for its bark control purpose.
CAUTION
CAUTION
Risk of skin damage. Please read and follow the
instructions in this manual. Proper fit of the collar is important. A collar worn for too long or made too tight on the pet's neck may cause skin damage. Ranging from redness to pressure ulcers; this condition is commonly known as bed sores.
- Avoid leaving the collar on the dog for more than 12 hours per day.
- When possible reposition the collar on the pet's neck every 1 to 2 hours.
- Check the fit to prevent excessive pressure; follow the instructions in this manual.
- Never connect a lead to the electronic collar; it will cause excessive pressure on the contacts.
- When using a separate collar for a lead, don't put pressure on the electronic collar.
- Wash the dog's neck area and the contacts of the collar weekly with a damp cloth.
- Examine the contact area daily for signs of a rash or a sore.
- If a rash or sore is found, discontinue use of the collar until the skin has healed.
If the condition persists beyond 48 hours, see your veterinarian. - For additional information on bed sores and pressure necrosis, please visit our website.
CAUTION
These steps will help keep your pet safe and comfortable.
Millions of pets are comfortable while they wear stainless steel contacts. Some pets are sensitive to contact pressure.
You may find after some time that your pet is very tolerant of the collar. If so, you may relax some of these precautions. It is important to continue daily checks of the contact area. If redness or sores are found, discontinue use until the skin has fully healed.
- The PetSafe® Bark Control Collar must be used only on healthy dogs. We recommend that you take your dog to a veterinarian before using the collar if he is not in good health.
- Do not shave the pet's neck as this may increase the risk of skin irritation.
- You should not make the collar any more tight than is required for good contact. A collar that is too tight will increase the risk of pressure necrosis in the contact area.

How the PetSafe® Big Dog Rechargeable Bark Control Collar Works
The PetSafe® Big Dog Rechargeable Bark Control Collar uses several features designed to shorten the training phase and promote good behaviour.
The Bark Control Collar has a unique patented sensor that provides the most reliable bark detection available. The Bark Control Collar uses both vibration and sound sensors (dual-detection) to discriminate each bark from other external noises. A static stimulation is administered through the Contact Points only if both the vibration from the vocal chords and the sound from the bark match the same criteria.
Key Definitions

Digital Display: Displays the current static stimulation mode based on light colour(s) and the numeric indicator. Also indicates the condition of the battery.
Settings Button: Adjusts the static stimulation mode and the level of static stimulation your dog receives when barking. Also used to turn the Bark Control Collar on and off.
Contact Points: Deliver the static stimulation.
Vibration Sensor Probe: Detects the vibrations of your dog's barking.
Charging Jack: For connecting the universal charging adapter. Although the bark control unit is waterproof, keep the rubber cover in place when not charging to keep debris out of the opening.
Sound-Activated Sensor: Detects your dog's bark.
STEP 1
Charging the Bark Control Collar
Before using the Bark Control Collar for the first time, be sure to charge the unit by following the steps described below.
Follow these steps to charge the battery:
- Lift the rubber cover protecting the Charging Jack.
- Connect the charger connector from the universal charging adaptor to the Charging Jack.
-
Plug the universal charging adaptor into a standard household electrical socket, using the appropriate adaptor plug. The Digital Display light will flash the sequence Green-Blue-Red to indicate that charging has started.
-
During charging, keep the Bark Control Collar in an open, well-ventilated area. The Digital Display light will flash red twice every 10 seconds to indicate that charging is active.
- When charging is complete, the universal charging adaptor will automatically shut off, preventing overcharging. The Digital Display light will flash green twice every 10 seconds to indicate that charging is complete. Note: The battery should fully charge in less than 4 hours.
- Remove the charger connector from the Charging Jack. The light will flash the sequence Red-Blue-Green to indicate the unit is no longer charging.
- When charging is complete, replace the Charging Jack rubber cover and unplug the universal charging adaptor. The Bark Control Collar will automatically turn off when the battery charger is connected. Following a charge, turn the unit back on before using.
Note: When the unit indicates that the battery is low (battery icon on the Digital Display indicates 1 bar or less and/or the light fl ashes red 3 times every 5 seconds) it is time to recharge the unit. If the battery pack is very low (i.e. been used too long or stored for an extended period of time) it may take some time for the unit to indicate that charging has started. If the unit does not indicate that it is charging after 1 hour, please contact the Customer Care Centre.
Battery Life
Average battery life is 3 to 6 months, depending on how often your dog barks. However, due to greater use during your dog's training, your first battery charge may not last as long. To conserve battery life, turn the Bark Control Collar off when not in use.
STEP 2
Fit the Bark Control Collar
Important: The proper fit and placement of your Bark Control Collar is important for effective operation. The Contact Points must have direct contact with your dog's skin on the underside of his neck.
To assure a proper fit, please follow these steps:
- Make sure the Bark Control unit is off.
- Have your dog standing comfortably (A).
- Place the Bark Control Collar on your dog's neck close to the ears. Centre the Contact Points underneath your dog's neck, touching the skin (B).

Note: It is sometimes necessary to trim the hair around the Contact Points to make sure that contact is consistent.

CAUTION
Do not shave the pet's neck as this may increase the risk of skin irritation.
- Check the tightness of the Bark Control Collar by inserting one finger between a Contact Point and the dog's neck (C). The fit should be snug but not constricting.
CAUTION
You should not make the collar any more tight than is required for good contact. A collar that is too tight will increase the risk of pressure necrosis in the contact area.
- Allow your dog to wear the collar for several minutes, then recheck the fit. Check the fit again as your dog becomes more comfortable with the Bark Control Collar.
Care and Cleaning
- Your dog's neck and the Contact Points must be washed weekly with a damp cloth.
- Be sure that your pet's neck is thoroughly dry before placing the Bark Control Collar back on his neck.
CAUTION
Risk of skin damage.
- For comfort, safety and effectiveness of this product, please ensure that you check the fit of your pet's collar frequently. If any skin irritation is observed, discontinue the use of the collar for a few days. If the condition persists beyond 48 hours, see your veterinarian.
- Do not attach a lead to the collar. This can result in pulling the Contact Points too tightly against your pet's neck. Attach a lead to a separate, non-metallic collar or harness, making sure the extra collar does not put pressure on the Contact Points.
Please refer to page 3 for additional information.
STEP 3
Choose Between Three Bark Control Settings
The Bark Control Collar has three bark control settings that allow you to choose how the static stimulation is delivered. The modes are indicated on the Digital Display by light colour(s) and the numeric indicator.
- The patent pending Temperament Learning mode tracks the number of static stimulations needed to substantially reduce (and in most cases eliminate) the number of nuisance barks. The system provides 10 levels of static stimulation. It begins with a low-level static stimulation (Level 0). However, if excessive barking continues, the static stimulation intensity will increase with each successive bark (to a maximum of Level 9) until the barking stops. This static stimulation level becomes the starting level the next time the dog barks. Once your dog has learned to reduce his barking, the initial warning static stimulations are automatically reduced.
- The Progressive Static Stimulation mode starts at the lowest level (Level 0) and progresses to the next level (to a maximum of Level 9) each time your dog barks within 30 seconds of the previous bark. If your dog does not bark again within 30 seconds, the static stimulation level will automatically reset to Level 0.
- The User-Selected Static Stimulation mode allows you to manually select the static stimulation level (0-9). Note: In User-Selected mode, always start training at the lowest level of correction (Level 0). Watch how your dog reacts, and if necessary, progress to the next static stimulation level.
Note: As a built-in safety feature, if your dog barks 15 times or more within an 80 second period, the Bark Control Collar will automatically shut off for 3 minutes. This safety feature is active in all three modes of operation.

Note: When the operating mode is changed, the static stimulation level is automatically reset to Level 0.
The Bark Control Collar has a single Settings Button that allows you to turn the unit on and off, display or change the current static stimulation mode, and change the static stimulation level. The following table describes how to perform the different tasks.
| Task Steps to perform Indications | ||
| Turn the unit on | Press and release the Settings Button while the unit is off. | The light will flash green five times and then display the current static stimulation mode. |
| Turn the unit off | Press the Settings Button until the Digital Display goes blank and the red light appears. Release the Settings Button.* | The light will flash red four times and the unit will turn off. |
| Display current static stimulation mode | Press and hold the Settings Button for less than 2 seconds before releasing it. | The unit will display the current static stimulation mode and battery condition. |
| Change active static stimulation mode | 1. Press and hold the Settings Button for at least 5 seconds. 2. Continue to hold the Settings Button to advance to the next available mode. 3. When the desired mode is displayed, release the Settings Button. 4. Once the Settings Button has been released for 5 seconds, the new static stimulation mode will activate. 5. If the Settings Button is released too early, simply press it again within 5 seconds. | Mode will advance and be displayed. Every 2 seconds the mode will advance and be displayed. The selected mode will be displayed during this time. The Digital Display will flash four times and the unit will resume normal operation using the new static stimulation mode.**The mode will advance and continue as described in Step 2. |
- If you continue to hold the Settings Button for more than 5 seconds, you will begin changing the static stimulation mode. You must release the Settings Button before attempting to turn off the unit.
** The light will flash every five seconds to indicate the current mode.
What to Expect During Use of the Bark Control Collar
Important: Do not leave your dog alone the first few times he receives a static stimulation.
Place the Bark Control Collar properly on your dog and wait nearby until he barks. Most dogs will understand very quickly that the Bark Control Collar is disrupting their urge to bark and will relax and stop barking. Because the static stimulation from the Bark Control Collar may be surprising or startling at first, some dogs may bark more when they receive the initial static stimulation.
On rare occasions, a dog may get into a bark-static stimulation-bark-static stimulation cycle. If this happens, reassure your dog with calm, soothing tones. As your dog relaxes, he will understand that if he becomes quiet, he will not receive any more static stimulations. The small minority of dogs that have this reaction will only have it the first time they wear the Bark Control Collar.
You should notice a reduction in your dog's barking within the first couple of days that he wears the Bark Control Collar. At this point, it is important to remember the learning process is still not complete. Dogs will "test" this new learning experience and will increase their attempts to bark. This usually occurs during the second week a dog wears the Bark Control Collar. If this does occur, remain consistent and do not alter your use of the Bark Control Collar. You must place the Bark Control Collar on your dog in every situation when you expect him to be quiet. If your dog is not wearing the Bark Control Collar, he may resume barking and his learning would suffer a setback.
Frequently Asked Questions
| Will another dog's bark set off the Bark Control Collar? | No. It includes dual detection which eliminates false static stimulations. |
| Will the Bark Control Collar work for my dog? | The Bark Control Collar is safe and effective for most breeds and sizes of dogs. However, the Big Dog Rechargeable Bark Control Collar is recommended for dogs 18+ kg. The system should only be used with pets who are over 6 months of age. If your pet is injured, or its mobility is otherwise impaired, contact your veterinarian or professional trainer before use. |
| Can I attach a lead to the Bark Control Collar? | No. This can result in pulling the Contact Points too tightly against your dog's neck. Attach a lead to a separate, non-metallic collar or a harness, making sure the extra collar does not put pressure on the Contact Points. |
