How do I install the batteries in the remote control?

Slide the battery compartment cover in the direction of the arrow. Insert two AAA (R03/UM4) batteries respecting the indicated polarities, then close the cover.

My remote control does not work at all, what should I do?

First check that the batteries are correctly installed and in good condition. If the problem persists, perform a manual or automatic setup of the remote control as described in the instructions. Also ensure that the target device is turned on and you are within range (about 8 meters).

How do I program the remote control for my television?

Turn on the TV and select channel 1. Press the TV key on the remote control. Press and hold the 1 and 3 keys simultaneously for 3 seconds until the green indicator stays on. Enter the 3-digit code for your brand (found in the supplied list). The indicator flashes twice to confirm. Test the operation.

How do I perform an automatic code search?

Turn on the device (e.g., TV) and start playback if necessary. Press the corresponding key (TV, DVD...). Hold 1 and 3 for 3 seconds. Press the Standby key. The remote control sends all known codes; as soon as the device turns off, press Standby twice to confirm. The search may take up to 8 minutes for a TV.

The remote control works partially, what should I do?

Some keys may not correspond. Try another code from the same brand in the list. You can also use the automatic search to find a more suitable code.

How do I control multiple devices with this remote?

Use the TV, VCR, SAT, DVD selection keys. For additional devices (2nd TV, 2nd VCR, cable, DVD-R), hold the SHIFT key while pressing the corresponding key.

How do I use the Shift key?

Hold the SHIFT key and press another key to access a secondary function. For example, SHIFT + PROG+ for previous menu, SHIFT + VOL+ for right menu. Available functions depend on the device.

What if the green indicator flashes once instead of twice when entering the code?

This means the entered code is incorrect. Check the code in the list and restart the procedure from step 2.

How do I clean the remote control?

Use a soft, dry cloth. Never use chemicals, solvents or abrasive cleaners. Avoid moisture.

Where can I find the list of codes for brands?

The list of codes is in the user manual, on pages 55-59. You can also download the manual in PDF format from the website notice-facile.com.

1. Introduction

Congratulations on your purchase of the Philips SBC RU258 universal remote control. After installing the remote control you can operate a maximum of 8 different appliances with it: TV, DVD player, DVD-recorder, video recorder, satellite receiver, cable decoder, a second TV and a second video recorder. You can find information about how to prepare this remote control for use in the chapter 'Installing the remote control'.

2. Installing the remote control

Inserting the batteries

1 Press the cover inwards and slide it in the direction of the arrow.
2 Place two R03, UM4 or AAA type batteries into the battery compartment, as shown.
3 Slide the cover back and click it firmly into place.

Testing the remote control

The remote control has been programmed to operate most Philips appliances. Because the RU258 may use different signals for each make and even for different models of the same make, it is advisable to test whether your appliance responds to the RU258.

The example below (TV) instructs you how to do this. You can repeat the same steps for other appliances (DVD, video recorder, etc.) which you want to operate using the RU258.

Example of TV:

1 Turn your TV on manually or use the original remote control. Tune to channel 1.
2 Press the RU258's TV key to select TV.

3 Check whether all the keys are working. For an overview of the keys and their functions see '3. Keys and functions'.
- If the TV responds as it should to all of the key commands the RU258 is ready for use.
- If the device does not respond at all or not to all of the key commands, follow the instructions under 'Setting the remote control'.

Setting the remote control

This is only necessary if your appliance does not respond to the RU258. If that is the case, the RU258 does not recognize the brand and/or model of your appliance and you need to program the remote control to do so.

The example below (TV) instructs you how to do this. You can repeat the same steps for other appliances (DVD, video recorder, etc.) which you want to operate using the RU258.

Example of TV:

1 Turn on the TV manually or use the original remote control. Tune in to channel 1.
2 Look up the brand of your TV in the code list at the back of this manual. One or more three-figure codes are shown for each brand. Note the first code. Be careful! There are separate tables for TV, video, DVD, etc. Make sure you use the codes from the correct table.

3 Press the RU258's TV key to select TV. (See 'Testing the remote control').

4 Keep keys '1' and '3' pressed simultaneously for three seconds until the green indicator light remains lit.

5 Then enter the code noted in step 2 using the digital keys. - The green indicator light will now flash twice. If the light flashes once for an extended period, the code has not been entered properly or the wrong code has been entered.

Start again from step 2. 6 Point the RU258 at the TV and check that it responds as it should. – If the TV responds to all of the key commands, the RU258 is ready for use. Do not forget to note your code.

- If the device does not respond at all, or not to all of the key commands, start again from step 2 and try the next code from the list.

Automatically setting the remote control

If you cannot find the right code for your brand device, the remote control can automatically search for the right code.

Example of TV:

1 Make sure the TV is switched on and select a channel using the original remote control or the keys on the TV (for example channel 1). The RU258 emits the 'switch off TV' signal for all models of TV that are stored in the memory.

• If the device is a DVD-player or video recorder, insert a disk or tape and start playback.

2 Then keep keys 1 and 3 on the RU258 pressed simultaneously for three seconds, until the green indicator light remains lit.

3 Press the Standby key of the RU258 briefly.

- The RU258 now starts emitting all known 'TV Each time a code is sent, the green indicator light flashes.

- The RU258 has now found a code that works on your TV.

5 Check if you can operate all functions on your TV with the RU258.

• If this is not the case, you can redo the automatic setting. The RU258 will then search for a code that perhaps works better.

- After the RU258 has run through all the known codes, the search will stop automatically and the green light will stop flashing.

- Automatic programming takes a maximum of 8 minutes for TV, 4 minutes for VCR, 5 minutes for SAT and CBL (Satellite box/Cable box) and 4 minutes for DVD.

3. Keys and functions

The illustration on page 3 gives an overview of all keys and their functions.

① ⏻ Standby. . . . . . . switches TV, VCR, SAT, CBL or DVD mode on or off.

② Indicator light..... lights up green when an IR signal is being sent. - flashes green when a code is being entered and when automatically setting the remote control.

③ TV/VCR/SAT/DVD. select the device you want to operate: TV, VCR, SAT (satellite) or DVD. Pressed simultaneously with SHIFT: select resp.: second TV, second VCR, CBL (cable) and DVD-R.

④ (Mute)....mutes the sound of the TV.

⑤ - PROG + . . . . . . . selects a previous or following channel.

⑥ MENU/ ☐ /DISC . turns the menu on and off. DVD: selects Disc menu.

⑦ Digital keys ..... direct choice of channels and other functions.

⑧ SHIFT ..... for extra functions. When pressed at the same time as a second key, the second key will get another function. For example:

SHIFT + PROG+: . . 'menu up' / SHIFT + PROG-: 'menu down'/SHIFT + VOL+: . . . 'menu right' / SHIFT + VOL-: 'menu left'

Try out other combinations with the Shift-key on your appliance in order to find out which functions are available. Only functions featured on the original remote control are available.

If the device does not respond at all, or not to all of the key commands, follow the instructions under 'Setting the remote control'. It is possible that you must enter another code for the device.
