Important

  • Read the instructions for use attentively in conjunction with the illustrations before using the appliance.
  • Before connecting the appliance, check if the voltage rating on the underside corresponds with your local mains voltage.
  • Connect the appliance to an earthed mains socket. If required, use a suitable (min. 10 A) earthed extension cord.
  • Unwind the mains cord (and the extension cord, if used) completely before use.
  • Make sure the mains cord never touches the hot grill plate, grill stone and/or pans.
  • Keep a watchful eye on children, especially when the appliance is hot.
  • Beware of fat spatting while grilling fat or juicy meat. Prick holes in sausages before grilling.
  • Before cleaning, always remove the plug from the mains socket and let the appliance cool down sufficiently.
  • Never immerse the appliance in water. You can wipe it clean with a damp cloth.
  • Avoid damaging the non-stick coating on the pans and (types HD 4422 and HD 4423 only) the grill plate. Do not allow them to touch metal objects (cutlery, kitchen utensils), abrasives, scourers, wire wool or aggressive cleaning agents. Cut meat etc. not on the grill plate but on a carving board or plate.
  • Do not leave empty pans in the appliance when switched on.
  • When using for the first time, some smell and smoke may come from the appliance. This is quite normal.
  • Grill stone (types HD 4421 and HD 4423 only)

Grilling on the stone or plate

General

  • Before use, spread a little vegetable oil on the grill stone or on the grill plate (fig. 2).
  • The grill stone as well as the grill plate are suitable for preparing all kinds of mellow meat and fish (gamba, salmon) and for grilling vegetables and fruit such as aubergine,

courgette, paprica, tomato, onion, mushroom, pineapple, apple and banana. It is not advisable to prepare meat or fish coated with breadcrumbs.

  • For optimum results, do not put too many ingredients on the stone or plate.
  • Ensure that meat etc. is dry before grilling. You can pat it dry with kitchen paper.
  • Do not salt meat or fish before preparation as too much juice would be abstracted from it while being fried.
  • To avoid meat or fish sticking to the grill stone or grill plate sear it up for some time before turning it over.
  • If you intend to grill steak, it is advisable to start doing just that, as the grill stone or grill plate is hottest when you begin grilling.
  • How well done the meat will be depends on the kind of meat, the preparation time, the initial temperature of the meat and its thickness.
  • The grill stone as well as the grill plate are suitable for kitchen use when preparing a normal meal.

Grill stone (fig. 3) (HD 4421 and HD 4423)

  • Always position the grill stone with the smooth side facing upwards.
  • Allow the grill stone to heat up for approx. 30 minutes before use.
  • To reduce the risk of food sticking to the grill stone you can sprinkle some salt on the stone before you start grilling.
  • The grill stone is suitable for all kinds of mellow meat, especially (rump) steak.
  • For the best results with grilling steaks or other meat, cut the pieces to a thickness of 112 -2 cm.
  • Put vegetables and fruit at the edge of the stone, where the temperature is a little lower.
  • Do not grill too fatty kinds of meat. The fat could burn and could run over the edge of the stone.
  • From time to time clean the grill stone with a wooden spatula.

Grill plate (fig. 4) (HD 4422 and HD 4423)

  • Always position the grill plate with the round side facing upwards.
  • Allow the grill plate to heat up for approx. 15 minutes before use.
  • Due to the convex shape, the grill plate is also suitable for fatter kinds of meat. The melted fat will gather near the edge.
  • For the best results with grilling steaks or other meat, cut the pieces to a thickness of approx. 1 12 cm.
  • Put vegetables and fruit at the edge of the plate, where the temperature is a little lower.
  • From time to time clean the grill plate with a ball of kitchen paper.

"Racletting"

For typical Swiss "Racletting" you use the little pans.

It is not meat but (melted) cheese which plays the main part here

  • Put a 12 cm thick slice of cheese (e.g. authentic Raclette cheese) into your pan.
  • Place the pan with the cheese on the lower plate.
On the lower plate the pan is heated with radiant heat from above: exactly as it is in a grill.
  • When the cheese is melted you can remove the pan from the appliance.

  • The cheese can be spread on puffed potatoes, baguette or toast.
You can also combine the melted cheese with e.g. uncooked ham, cooked ham, smoked bacon, garlic sausage, Bündnerfleisch, chorizo, pickled onions, gherkins.

  • Not only the authentic Swiss Raclette cheese is suitable.
Very tatsty results can also be obtained with e.g. matured farm cheese, garlic cheese, Brie, immature cream cheese, Port Salut, Munster, Gruyère or Emmentaler!

Cooking "au gratin"

You can give a delicious crust of gratinated cheese to the food which you have prepared on the grill stone or plate.

  • Put the grilled food in a pan and cover it with a slice of cheese.
  • Place the pan on the lower plate.
  • When the cheese has melted, remove the pan from the appliance.

Cleaning

  • Ensure that the appliance is unplugged before you start cleaning it. You can clean it with a damp cloth.
  • Never immerse the appliance in water. Avoid water entering the appliance.

Grill stone (HD 4421 and HD 4423)

  • Allow the grill stone to cool down sufficiently (until hand warm) before cleaning.
  • Clean the grill stone with hot clean water and if required a scouring pad.
  • Do not use a detergent such as a cleaning product or a washing-up agent, as these could affect the natural properties of the stone.
  • Do not scrape with a hard object: this could damage the smooth surface.

  • Do not clean the grill stone in a dish washer.

Pans (all types) and grill plate (HD 4422 and HD 4423)

  • Be careful when handling and washing the pans and grill plate to avoid damaging the non-stick coatings.
  • If necessary, let the pans and the grill plate soak in hot soapy water for some time.

Atmospheric lighting (fig. 6)

If the appliance is placed on a dark surface and the ambient light is reduced, the atmospheric lighting of the appliance will show up best.

Mains cord replacement

If the mains cord of this appliance is damaged, it must only be replaced by Philips or their service representative, as special tools and/or parts are required.

The grill-stone fully complies with DIN 51032 norm for food preparation materials.

For U.K. only:

Fitting a different plug

This appliance is fitted with a BS 1363 13 Amp. plug.

Should you need to replace the plug, connect the wires as follows:

Green/yellow wire to the Earth terminal ( ± ) of the new plug.

Brown wire to the Live (L) terminal of the new plug.

Blue wire to the Neutral (N) terminal of the new plug.

Always fit the same value of fuse as that originally supplied with your appliance. For your appliance this is a 13 Amp. fuse (brown). Only use BS 1362 approved fuses.

When disposing of an old plug (particularly the moulded type which has been cut from the mains cord) always remove the fuse as the plug could be dangerous if ever inserted in a live socket.
