CABINET CONSTRUCTION SUGGESTIONS

CABINET CONSTRUCTION TIPS
When building a passive speaker cabinet, the following points should be borne in mind:
- Use 19mm thick (or 22mm is preferable) chipboard or MDF to make the cabinets. For particularly large cabinets or heavy woofers, the baffle can be doubled (e.g. 2× 19mm ).
- Maximum stability is achieved by gluing the boards together under pressure (wood glue) and then screwing them together using wood screws. The screws should be inserted at approx. 10 cm intervals.
- The specified dimensions of the bass reflex tubes may fluctuate by a maximum of 10% .
- After assembling the cabinet, make sure that it is airtight; touch up with silicone if necessary.
- Medium-thick polyester wool or foam insulation is advisable for enclosed cabinets. Bass reflex cabinets only require single insulation on the internal walls of the cabinet. On no account may the reflex opening be blocked.
POSITIONING AND SECURING THE SUBWOOFERS
Ensure that the subwoofer cabinet rests on an even surface. The cones (and, where applicable, the bass reflex tube) should not be placed directly against the car's interior walls.
Make sure that the subwoofer is secured in such a way that it cannot slip or slide. Damage resulting from sudden changes in speed (e.g. hard braking) is not covered under the terms of our guarantee.
CONNECTING TO THE POWER AMPLIFIER
The subwoofer should be connected to an external power amplifier in every case. This can provide the required electrical power and create corresponding dynamic reserves. The relevant instructions also contain the customized connection diagram for the operation of a subwoofer.
The basic equipment of a power amplifier also includes an active crossover switch (low-pass) to keep undesirable mid-tone ranges away from the subwoofer.
ADDITIONAL PASSIVE FILTERS
Should you not have any active filter switching available (e.g. use of a mono-block or trimode two-channel power amp), this function has to be performed by a passive crossover. Please select your subwoofer's cutoff frequency and wire the components as follows.
Cutoff frequency Subwoofer Coil L / min. Capacitor C / cable diameter electric strength
60 Hz 380 mm 15 mH / 1.5 mm² 470uF / 100Vdc
80 Hz 380/300 mm 12 mH / 1.0 - 1.5 mm² 330uF / 100Vdc
90 Hz 300 mm 10 mH / 1.0 mm² 330uF / 100Vdc
110 Hz 300/250 mm 8.2 mH / 0.7 - 1.0 mm² 220uF / 100Vdc
130 Hz 250 mm 6.8 mH / 0.7 mm² 220uF / 100Vdc
160 Hz 250/200 mm 5.6 mH / 0.5 - 0.7 mm² 150uF / 100Vdc
FIG. 3
The use of subwoofoers leads to a multiple increase in the dynamics of your audio system. To safeguard your tweeter systems, we recommend protecting these with an additional protective condenser (100 - 200uF series-connected in front of the overall mid-tweeter system).
THE FOLLOWING POINTS SHOULD BE HEADED WHEN CHOOSING COMPONENTS:
- Although core coils offer a good price-performance ratio, they also penetrate the saturation region, which results in acoustic distortions. The coils should therefore have as little ferrite / iron content as possible.
- Be sure to adhere to the recommended minimum cable diameter.
- With regard to condensers, electrolyte condensers with the highest possible electric strength should be used.
- The components should not be mounted directly on the speaker. Secure the parts with screws, cable ties and hot-setting glue. Keep the cable runs as short as possible.
- The components are available from specialist electronic equipment dealers.
CABLES TO BE USED
To transport the output from the amplifier to the subwoofer efficiently and reliably, you should bear in mind when selecting the speaker cable that 2 × 4 ~mm^2 gauge wiring is required for cable lengths in excess of 3 meters. 2 × 2.5 ~mm^2 cable is sufficient for shorter runs. Lay the cable in such a way that short-circuiting cannot occur, i.e. the cable may at no time be jammed between metal parts. Make sure that terminals on the speaker are screwed tight and check their contact at regular intervals.
SUBWOOFER POLARITY
Because of the different spatial conditions prevailing in different vehicles, subwoofer polarity can best be determined by trial and error. To do this, choose some music material you know very well and select the setting you like most. Some radios / control units also offer the possibility of setting the polarity on the appliance itself (phase). One change in polarity corresponds to a phase shift of 180 degrees.
