5. Use

Refer to the illustrations on pages 2 and 3 of this manual.

  • Remo ve the sensor cover [1] by releasing the screw at the back of the device and sliding the cover upwards.
  • Press the TYPE/ON/CFF button to switch the device on. Press and hold ± 2s to switch it off. The meter will start up in the same mode (IR or thermocouple) as it was in when it was switched off.
  • The device powers off automatically after ± 25s in IR-mode or ± 20min in thermocouple-mode. To disable auto-power off, press and hold the Laser button while switching the device on. Release the Laser-button when the backlight switches on.
  • Press the UNIT button to switch between 0^ C and 0^ F .
  • Press the button switch on the blacklight [I]. Press again to switch it off.

IR-mode:

  • Switch on the meter. If it starts up in thermocouple mode [B] then press the TYPE/ON/OFF button again to enable IR-mode ([λ] is shown).
  • Point the IR-sensor to wards the target and press the SCAN/H-button [C]. Ideal measuring range is between 25 and 250 mm( ( 1^ 10^ ) ) . The surface temperature is shown [E]. End the measuring session by releasing the SCAN/H-button [A].

Note: see §7 for more useful information.

  • To facilitate measuring, the thermometer can produce a laser-beam. Press the LASER-button to enable the laser-beam (see [H]) and point it towards the target.

DVM8090 Rev. 01

  • The memory display [F] default shows the average value AVG [G] of the current measuring session. Press the Mode button to display the highest measured values (MAX [G]). Press a second time to display the lowest measured values (MIN [G]). Press again to display the difference between maximum and minimum value (MAX-MIN [G]). Another press on the Mode button will display the average value again.

VELLEMAN DVM8090 - DVM8090 Rev. 01 - 1

Note: the memory values are reset when a new measurement starts (when the SCAN/H-button is pushed).

Thermocouple-mode

  • Insert the thermocouple (included) into the jack [3] (only one way possible, do not force).
  • Switch on the meter. If it starts up in IR- mode [A] then press the TYPE/ON/OFF button again to enable thermocouple-mode ([B] is shown).
  • Hold the thermocouple against the target surface and read the temperature [E].
  • To place the meter in hold-mode [A], press the SCAN/H-button. The current value is kept on the screen until the SCAN/H-button is pressed again.
  • The memory display [F] shows the current temperature of the thermometer itself.
  • The MODE- and LASER-button do not have any functionality in thermocouple mode.
  • Remove the thermocouple after use. Only handle the thermocouple by the connector.

Both modes

  • When the battery indicator [K] is shown, replace the batteries (see §9).
Always place the sensor cover [1] back when the device is not in use.

6. Operation tips

  • Do not touch the sensor [2] and keep the sensor away from possible interfering sources e.g. a fan, heating element, body ... Also, do not expose the sensor to direct (sun)light as this will lead to false readings.
  • Consider mounting the device on a tripod (not incl.) for longer and more stable measurements.
  • Make sure the device is at ambient temperature for accurate measurements.
  • Remove the batteries when the device is not used for a long time.

7. Ba c kground information

Working principle

The Infra Red sensor of the unit detects energy that is emitted, reflected and transmitted by a surface. This energy is focussed onto a detector that converts this information into a temperature reading. The laser beam is only used for aiming purposes.

Emissivity

Emissivity describes the energy-emitting characteristics of materials. Most organic or oxidized surfaces have an emissivity of ± 0.95 .

Measuring shiny or polished surfaces will be inaccurate. Use some masking tape or paint to compensate, allow sufficient time for the tape or paint to reach the surface temperature.

When measuring targets with < 0.95 , the display temperature is lower than the actual temperature of the surface.

Surface temperature

When going from low temperature to high temperature measurements or vice versa, the IR sensor of the thermometer needs a few minutes to adjust.

Distance and spot size

The distance-to-spot ratio of this thermometer is 2:1. This means that the spot size (measured area) is approximately half the distance between the sensor and the target, e.g. when the meter is held at 10cm(± 4^ ) from the target, the of the measured area (spot size) will be ± 5cm(± 2^ ) . The target must be larger than the spot size to ensure correct measurement.

This means that for smaller targets, the thermometer must be held closer to the target. For best accuracy, make sure the target is at least twice as large as the spot size.

8. Ma t内部控制

  • Wipe the device regularly with a moist, lint-free cloth. Do not use alcohol or solvents. DO NOT submerge the device in any liquid.

9. Batteries

  • To replace the batteries, make sure the device is switched off.
  • Open the battery cover at the back by sliding it downwards (away from the sensor).
  • Take out the old batteries and replace them with 3 new and identical 1.5V AAA batteries following the polarity markings inside the battery compartment.
  • Slide the battery cover back in place.

VELLEMAN DVM8090 - Batteries - 1

Do not puncture or throw batteries in fire. Dispose of batteries in accordance with local regulations. Do not attempt to recharge non-rechargeable batteries. Keep batteries away from children.
