General Power Tool Safety Warnings

WARNING

Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations and specifica-

tions provided with this power tool. Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.

Save all warnings and instructions for future reference.

The term "power tool" in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.

Work area safety

▶ Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
▶ Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
▶ Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

Electrical safety

▶ Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
▶ Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
▶ Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
▶ Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
▶ If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.

Personal safety

▶ Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
▶ Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as a dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
▶ Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
▶ Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
▶ Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair and clothing away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
▶ If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.
▶ Do not let familiarity gained from frequent use of tools allow you to become complacent and ignore tool safety principles. A careless action can cause severe injury within a fraction of a second.

Power tool use and care

▶ Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
▶ Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
▶ Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or remove the battery pack, if detachable, from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
▶ Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.

  • Maintain power tools and accessories. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool's operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
▶ Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
▶ Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
▶ Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery handles and grasping surfaces do not allow for safe handling and control of the tool in unexpected situations.

Battery tool use and care

▶ Recharge only with the charger specified by the manufacturer. A charger that is suitable for one type of battery pack may create a risk of fire when used with another battery pack.
▶ Use power tools only with specifically designated battery packs. Use of any other battery packs may create a risk of injury and fire.
When battery pack is not in use, keep it away from other metal objects, like paper clips, coins, keys, nails, screws or other small metal objects, that can make a connection from one terminal to another. Shorting the battery terminals together may cause burns or a fire.
▶ Under abusive conditions, liquid may be ejected from the battery; avoid contact. If contact accidentally occurs, flush with water. If liquid contacts eyes, additionally seek medical help. Liquid ejected from the battery may cause irritation or burns.
▶ Do not use a battery pack or tool that is damaged or modified. Damaged or modified batteries may exhibit unpredictable behaviour resulting in fire, explosion or risk of injury.
▶ Do not expose a battery pack or tool to fire or excessive temperature. Exposure to fire or temperature above 130^ C may cause explosion.
▶ Follow all charging instructions and do not charge the battery pack or tool outside the temperature range specified in the instructions. Charging improperly or at temperatures outside the specified range may damage the battery and increase the risk of fire.

Service

▶ Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.

The vibration level and noise emission value given in these instructions have been measured in accordance with a standardised measuring procedure and may be used to compare power tools. They may also be used for a preliminary estimation of vibration and noise emissions.

The stated vibration level and noise emission value represent the main applications of the power tool. However, if the power tool is used for other applications, with different application tools or is poorly maintained, the vibration level and noise emission value may differ. This may significantly increase the vibration and noise emissions over the total working period.

To estimate vibration and noise emissions accurately, the times when the tool is switched off or when it is running but not actually being used should also be taken into account.

This may significantly reduce vibration and noise emissions over the total working period.

Implement additional safety measures to protect the operator from the effects of vibration, such as servicing the power tool and application tools, keeping their hands warm, and organising workflows correctly.

Assembly

▶ Pull the plug out of the socket before carrying out any work on the power tool.
▶ Before any work on the power tool (e.g. maintenance, tool change, etc.) as well as during transport and storage, set the rotational direction switch to the middle

position. There is risk of injury from unintentionally pressing the on/off switch.

Remove the battery from the power tool before carrying out work on the power tool (e.g. maintenance, changing tool, etc.). The battery should also be removed for transport and storage. There is risk of injury from unintentionally pressing the on/off switch.

Press the button for depth stop adjustment (10) and insert the depth stop into the auxiliary handle.

Pull the depth stop far enough out that the distance between the drill bit tip and the edge of the depth stop corresponds to the required drilling depth X.

The fluting on the depth stop (12) must face upwards.

Changing the tool

▶ Wear protective gloves when changing tools. The drill chuck may heat up significantly when it is used for long periods.

Keyless chuck (see figure E)

Remove the battery from the power tool before carrying out work on the power tool (e.g. maintenance, changing tool, etc.). The battery should also be removed for transport and storage. There is risk of injury from unintentionally pressing the on/off switch.

The drill spindle is locked when the on/off switch (7) is not pressed. This makes it possible to change the application tool in the drill chuck quickly, conveniently and easily.

Open the keyless chuck (1) by turning it in the direction of rotation ① until the tool can be inserted. Insert the tool.

Firmly tighten the sleeve of the keyless chuck (1) by turning it by hand in the rotational direction ② until it stops clicking. This will automatically lock the drill chuck.

The lock will disengage again if you turn the sleeve in the opposite direction to remove the tool.

Keyed chuck (see figure F)

Open the keyed chuck (15) by turning it until the tool can be inserted. Insert the tool.

Insert the chuck key (14) into the corresponding holes of the keyed chuck (15) and clamp the tool evenly.

Screwdriving tools (see figure G)

You should always use a universal bit holder (17) when using screwdriver bits (16). Only use screwdriver bits that fit the screw head.

For screwdriving, make sure the "drilling/impact drilling" selector switch (2) is always set to the "drilling" symbol.

Changing the drill chuck

If your power tool does not have a drill spindle locking mechanism, you must have the drill chuck changed by an authorised after-sales service centre for Bosch power tools.

▶ Pull the plug out of the socket before carrying out any work on the power tool.

Removing the drill chuck (see figure H)

Remove the auxiliary handle (11) and set the gear selector switch (9) to the middle position between first and second gear.

Insert a steel pin with a diameter of 4 mm and a length of approx. 50 mm into the hole on the spindle collar to lock the drill spindle in place. Clamp a hex key (18) in the keyless chuck (1), leading with the short shaft.

Place the power tool on a firm surface, e.g. a work bench. Hold the power tool in place and loosen the keyless chuck (1) by turning the hex key (18) in the rotational direction ①.

A tightly seated keyless chuck is loosened with a light blow on the long shaft of the hex key (18). Remove the hex key from the keyless chuck and completely unscrew the keyless chuck from the power tool.

Fitting the drill chuck (see figure I)

To fit the keyless chuck/keyed chuck, perform the same steps in reverse order.

▶ After successfully fitting the drill chuck, remove the steel pin from the hole again.

BOSCH GSB 212 RCT Professional - Fitting the drill chuck (see figure I) - 1

The drill chuck must be tightened using a tightening torque of approx. 67–74 Nm.

Dust/Chip Extraction

Dust from materials such as lead-containing coatings, some wood types, minerals and metal can be harmful to one's health. Touching or breathing-in the dust can cause allergic reactions and/or lead to respiratory infections of the user or bystanders.

Certain dust, such as oak or beech dust, is considered carcinogenic, especially in connection with wood-treatment additives (chromate, wood preservative). Materials containing asbestos may only be worked by specialists.

- Provide for good ventilation of the working place.

- It is recommended to wear a P2 filter-class respirator.

20 | English

Observe the relevant regulations in your country for the materials to be worked.

- Avoid dust accumulation at the workplace. Dust can easily ignite.

BOSCH GSB 212 RCT Professional - Overload clutch - 1

The power tool is equipped with an overload clutch (anti-rotation) to limit high torque reactions.

If the application tool jams or snags, the power transmission to the drill spindle will be interrupted. Always hold the power tool firmly with both hands to withstand the forces this may create and adopt a position with stable footing.
▶ Switch the power tool off immediately and remove the application tool if the power tool becomes blocked. Switching on when the drilling tool is blocked may cause high torque reactions.

Rapid switch-off (Kickback Control)

(GSB 24-2)

BOSCH GSB 212 RCT Professional - (GSB 24-2) - 1

The rapid shut-off function (KickBack Control) gives the user greater control over the power tool and offers them better protection than power tools that do not have Kick-

Back Control. The power tool will switch off if it suddenly and unforeseeably rotates around the drilling axis.

To switch the tool back on, release the on/off switch and then press it again twice.

It will no longer be possible to switch the power tool on if the KickBack Control function is faulty. Have the power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only original replacement parts.

Adjusting the Speed/Impact Rate

You can adjust the speed/impact rate of the power tool when it is on by pressing in the on/off switch (7) to varying extents.

Applying light pressure to the on/off switch (7) results in a low rotational speed/impact rate. Applying increasing pressure to the switch increases the speed/impact rate.

Preselecting the speed/impact rate

You can preselect the required speed/impact rate using the speed preselection thumbwheel (8), even during operation. The required speed/impact rate is dependent on the material and the work conditions and can be determined by practical trials.

Speed Electronic Preselection (GSB 21-2 RCT)

With the thumbwheel for electronic speed preselection (3), the required speed/impact frequency can be selected even if the machine is running.

The required speed/impact rate depends on the material and the working conditions; it can be ascertained through practical tests.

Constant Electronic Control (GSB 21-2 RCT)

The constant electronic control keeps the preselected speed and impact rate nearly constant between no-load and load conditions.

Electronic Torque Control/Speed Preselection (GSB 21-2 RCT)

BOSCH GSB 212 RCT Professional - Electronic Torque Control/Speed Preselection (GSB 21-2 RCT) - 1

BOSCH GSB 212 RCT Professional - Electronic Torque Control/Speed Preselection (GSB 21-2 RCT) - 2

BOSCH GSB 212 RCT Professional - Electronic Torque Control/Speed Preselection (GSB 21-2 RCT) - 4

To drill with speed preselection, set the selector switch (4) to the "drilling" symbol. The required speed can be selected with the thumbwheel (3); it can also be adjusted during operation.

To drive in screws with torque control, set the selector switch (4) to the "screwdriving" symbol. The effective torque at the drill spindle can be variably adjusted with the thumbwheel (3) even during operation:

I = low torque, III = high torque.

The maximum speed is automatically adapted to the adjusted torque.

If the preselected torque is reached during screwdriving, the machine switches off; the application tool no longer rotates. If the load on the machine is then removed with the on/off switch (7) still pressed, the application tool continues to run only at very low speed for safety reasons.

After briefly releasing the on/off switch (7), the next screw can be driven in with the same torque.

BOSCH GSB 212 RCT Professional - Electronic Torque Control/Speed Preselection (GSB 21-2 RCT) - 5

BOSCH GSB 212 RCT Professional - Electronic Torque Control/Speed Preselection (GSB 21-2 RCT) - 6

For screwdriving without torque limitation, turn the thumbwheel (3) all the way to the right. This setting is required when the torque in position III is not sufficient.

Practical Advice

▶ Pull the plug out of the socket before carrying out any work on the power tool.
▶ Only apply the power tool to the screw/nut when the tool is switched off. Rotating tool inserts can slip off.

After working at a low speed for an extended period, you should operate the power tool at the maximum speed for approximately three minutes without load to cool it down.

To drill into tiles, set the selector switch (2) to the "drilling" symbol. After drilling through the tile, set the selector switch to the "impact drilling" symbol and drill with impact.

Use carbide drill bits when working with concrete, stone and masonry.

When drilling into metal, only use sharpened HSS drills (HSS = high-speed steel) which are in perfect condition. The

Bosch accessory range guarantees appropriate quality.

Using the drill bit sharpener (accessory), you can effortlessly sharpen twist drill bits with a diameter of 2.5–10 mm.

Maintenance and Service

Maintenance and Cleaning

Remove the battery from the power tool before carrying out work on the power tool (e.g. maintenance, changing tool, etc.). The battery should also be removed for transport and storage. There is risk of injury from unintentionally pressing the on/off switch.
▶ Pull the plug out of the socket before carrying out any work on the power tool.
▶ To ensure safe and efficient operation, always keep the power tool and the ventilation slots clean.

If the battery is no longer working, please contact an authorised after-sales service agent for Bosch power tools.

In order to avoid safety hazards, if the power supply cord needs to be replaced, this must be done by Bosch or by an after-sales service centre that is authorised to repair Bosch power tools.
