Frequently Asked Questions - GS8+ COMET LABS

How to connect the switch to a network?
Use a Category 5 or higher straight-through cable to connect the RJ-45 ports of the switch to your network devices (PC, server, etc.). Plug in the power cable and turn on the switch. The Link/ACT LEDs light up to indicate an established connection.
What types of cables to use?
For 10Base-T: Cat. 3, 4, or 5 UTP/STP cable. For 100Base-TX and 1000Base-T: Cat. 5 UTP/STP cable. Thanks to the Auto-MDI/MDI-X function, you can use a straight-through cable for all connections, even to connect two switches together.
What does each LED mean?
The Power LED (yellow) lights up when the device is powered on. The 1000M LEDs (yellow) indicate a 1000 Mbps link; off means the link is 10/100 Mbps. The Link/ACT LEDs (yellow) light up for an established connection and blink during data transfer.
How to set up a 1000 Mbps link?
The switch automatically negotiates the highest possible speed with the connected device. To ensure a 1000 Mbps link, make sure your equipment (network card, etc.) supports Gigabit and use a good Cat. 5 or higher cable. No manual configuration is needed: the Auto-Negotiation function handles it.
Does the switch support jumbo frames?
Yes, the switch supports Jumbo frames up to 9 KB. This optimizes the transfer of large files on the network by reducing fragmentation. Ensure that connected devices are also configured to use the same jumbo frame size.
What is the maximum power consumption?
The maximum consumption is 20 Watts. The switch uses an internal AC 90-240 V, 50-60 Hz power supply. It features Quiet & Cool fanless technology, reducing consumption and noise.
Can the switch be rack-mounted?
Yes, the switch has a compact 9-inch form factor and can be mounted in a 10-inch or 19-inch rack using brackets (not included). It is also designed for desktop use.
How to resolve a connectivity issue?
First check that the Power and Link/ACT LEDs are lit. If an LED is off, try a different cable or port. Ensure that the network settings (IP, etc.) of your devices are correct. If the problem persists, restart the switch by unplugging it for a few seconds. Consult the manual for more details.
Does the switch require a specific driver?
No, the switch is plug-and-play. It requires no driver or installation software. Simply plug it in and it works immediately. Hardware configuration is automatic thanks to Auto-Negotiation and Auto-MDI/MDI-X.
What is the product warranty?
The warranty varies by retailer. In general, COMET LABS offers a 2 to 3 year warranty on its switches. Please check the packaging or contact your retailer for exact terms. Keep the invoice as proof of purchase.

Chapter 1

Introduction

The Switch provides 8 10/100/1000Mbps NWAY RJ-45 ports. It was designed for easy installation and high performance in an environment where traffic on the network and the number of user increase continuously. With newest Gigabit chip set, eTen 9" Gigabit Ethernet switch can fully support highest speed without hanging on problem even when Full-duplex full loaded.

The switch also provides automatic crossover detection functionality on each port. It is simple and friendly to up-link to another switch without crossover cable.

Comet Labs Quiet & Cool technology : No fan needed, no noise. A specific design for better cooling flow.

The compact rigid desktop size was specifically designed for ROBO (Remote Office & Branch Office) and medium to large workgroups. The Switch can be installed where space is limited; moreover it provides smooth network migration and easy upgrade to network capacity. The 9" size can be rack-mount on 10" or 19" cabinet.
