Before Use Read this before attempting any operations. < As the unit may become warm during operation, always leave sufficient space around the unit for ventilation. < The voltage supplied to the unit should match the voltage as printed on the rear panel. If you are in any doubt regarding this matter, consult an electrician. < Choose the installation location of your unit carefully. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight or close to a source of heat. Also avoid locations subject to vibrations and excessive dust, heat, cold or moisture. < Do not place the unit on an amplifier/receiver. Beware of condensation When the unit (or a disc) is moved from a cold place to a warm place, or used after a sudden temperature change, there is a danger of condensation: vapor in the air could condense on the internal mechanism, making correct operation impossible. To prevent this, or if this occurs, leave the unit for one or two hours with the power turned on. Then the unit will stabilize at the temperature of its surroundings. Maintenance If the surface of the unit gets dirty, wipe with a soft cloth or use diluted neutral cleaning liquid. Be sure to remove any fluid completely. Do not use thinner, benzine or alcohol as they may damage the surface of the unit. ENGLISH < Do not open the cabinet as this might result in damage to the circuitry or electrical shock. If a foreign object should get into the unit, contact your dealer or service company. < When removing the power plug from the wall outlet, always pull directly on the plug, never yank the cord. < To keep the laser pickup clean, do not touch it, and always close the disc tray. < Do not attempt to clean the unit with chemical solvents as this might damage the finish. Use a clean, dry cloth. < Keep this manual in a safe place for future reference. During playback During playback, the disc rotates at high speed. Do not lift or move the unit during playback. Doing so may damage the disc or the unit. When moving this unit When moving or packing the unit, be sure to remove the disc and close the disc tray. Then, turn off the power and disconnect the power cord. Moving this unit with the disc loaded may result in damage to this unit.

Discs This unit can play the following discs: < Conventional audio CDs bearing the COMPACT DISC DIGITAL AUDIO logo on the label: < Printable CD-R and CD-RW discs are not recommended, as the label side might be sticky and damage the unit. < Do not stick papers or protective sheets on the discs and do not use any protective coating spray. < Properly finalized CD-R and CD-RW discs < MP3/WMA CDs Note < Depending on the quality of the disc and/or the condition of the recording, some CD-R/CD-RW discs may not be playable. < Copy-protected discs and other discs which do not conform to the CD standard may not play back correctly in this unit. If you use such discs in this unit, TEAC Corporation and its subsidiaries cannot be responsible for any consequences or guarantee the quality of reproduction. If you have problems with such nonstandard discs, you should contact the producers of the disc. < Always place the disc on the disc tray with the label side up. < To remove a disc from its storage case, press down on the center of the case and lift the disc out, holding it carefully by the edges. < Should the disc become dirty, wipe the surface radially (from the center hole outward towards the outer edge) with a soft and dry cloth. < Never use such chemicals as record sprays, antistatic sprays or fluid, benzine or thinner to clean the discs. Such chemicals will do irreparable damage to the disc’s plastic surface. < Discs should be returned to their cases after use to avoid dust and scratches that could cause the laser pickup to ”skip”. < Do not expose discs to direct sunlight or high humidity and temperature for extended periods. Long exposure to high temperatures will warp the disc. < Do not play any disc that is warped, deformed or damaged. Playing such discs may cause irreparable harm to the playing mechanisms. < CD-R and CD-RW discs are more sensitive to the effects of heat and ultraviolet rays than ordinary CDs. It is important that they are not stored in a location where direct sunlight will fall on them, and which is away from sources of heat such as radiators or heat-generating electrical devices.

< Use a soft oil-based felt-tipped pen to write the information on the label side. Never use a ball-point or hard-tipped pen, as this may cause damage to the recorded side. < Never use a stabilizer. Using commercially available CD stabilizers with this unit will damage the mechanisms and cause them to malfunction. < Do not play irregular shape CDs (octagonal, heart shaped, business card size, etc.). They can damage the unit. < If you are in any doubt as to the care and handling of a CD-R/ CD-RW disc, read the precautions supplied with the disc, or contact the disc manufacturer directly. MP3 and WMA Remote Control Unit This unit can play MP3 and WMA files recorded on a CD-R or CD-RW disc. You can operate the unit using the supplied remote control unit RC-1182. When operating the remote control unit, point it towards the remote sensor on the front panel of the unit. < File names of MP3 or WMA should be alphanumeric characters. This unit cannot display symbols and full-size or double-byte characters (such as Japanese, Chinese, etc.) correctly. Also, be sure to use the file extension. (”.mp3” for MP3 files, ”.wma” for WMA files.) < Remote control operation may be impossible if there are any obstacles between the unit and the remote control. < MP3 files are mono or stereo MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 format. This unit can play MP3 files with a sampling frequency of 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz and a bit-rate of 320 kbps or less. < If the remote control unit is operated near other appliances which generate infrared rays, or if other remote control devices using infrared rays are used near the unit, it may operate incorrectly. Conversely, the other appliances may operate incorrectly. < This unit can play WMA files with a sampling frequency of 44.1 kHz and a bit-rate of 192 kbps or less. Battery Installation

1. Remove the battery compartment cover.

ENGLISH < Audio encoded at 128 Kbps should sound close to regular audio CD quality. Although this unit plays lower bit-rate MP3 tracks, the sound quality deteriorates noticeably at lower bit-rates. < The disc must be finalized in order to play. < The CD-ROM must be ISO 9660 compatible. < When more than 255 files are recorded on a disc, the unit might not play it correctly.

2. Insert two ”AAA” (R03, UM-4) dry batteries. Make sure that the

batteries are inserted with their positive ”+” and negative ”_” poles positioned correctly.

3. Close the cover.

Battery Replacement If the effective range decreases, the batteries are exhausted. In this case replace the batteries with new ones. Precautions concerning batteries < Be sure to insert the batteries with correct positive ”+” and negative ”_” polarities. < Use batteries of the same type. Never use different types of batteries together. < Rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries can be used. Refer to the precautions on their labels. < When the remote control unit is not to be used for a long time (more than a month), remove the batteries from the battery compartment to prevent them from leaking. If they leak, wipe away the liquid inside the battery compartment and replace the batteries with new ones. < Do not heat or disassemble batteries and never dispose of old batteries by throwing them in a fire.

Connection AG-H600 series receiver (LINE IN) SYSTEM CONTROL

DIGITAL IN (COAXIAL) CD recorder etc. CAUTION < Switch off the power to all equipment before connecting any components. < Read the instructions of each component you intend to use with this unit.

A LINE OUT jacks These jacks transmit an analog 2-channel audio signal. Connect them to the CD jacks of a receiver or an amplifier with the provided RCA cables. < Make sure to connect the cables as follows: White plug q White jack (L: left channel) Red plug q Red jack (R: right channel) White (L) Red (R) Connect the signal ground of other components using a commercially available jacketed cable (PVC-covered cable or others). < Note that this is NOT an electrical safety ground (earth). F AC Inlet White (L) Red (R) Use only the supplied power cord. < Use of other power cord may result in fire or electric shock. < Unplug the power cord when you are not going to use the unit for an extended period of time. ENGLISH < Be sure to insert each plug securely. To prevent hum and noise, avoid bundling the signal interconnection cables together with the AC power cord or speaker cables. B DIGITAL OUT jack Connect it to a digital coaxial input terminal of a digital apparatus such as a CD recorder with a commercially-available digital coaxial cable. < Make sure that the cable is firmly inserted. C SYSTEM CONTROL jack If you have TEAC AG-H600 series receiver, convenient system control functions are available. Connect it to the SYSTEM CONTROL jack on the AG-H600 series receiver with the provided system control connection cord. Then set the SYSTEM CONTROL SELECTOR switch on this unit to “SYSTEM”. (See D .) Available system control functions are as follows: N When you turn on or standby the AG-H600 series receiver using the remote control unit (RC-1181) of the receiver, this unit is also turned on or standby synchronously. N When you change the source from CD to another on AG-H600 series receiver, playback stops and display turns off on this unit. Refer also to the manual of the AG-H600 series receiver. D SYSTEM CONTROL SELECTOR switch When you want to use the system control functions, connect the SYSTEM CONTROL jacks (see C ), and set the switch to “SYSTEM”. < The STANDBY/ON button on the remote control unit of this unit does not work while the switch is set to “SYSTEM”. < When you do not use the system control functions or do not have a AG-H600 series receiver, set the switch to “SINGLE“. Otherwise, you cannot turn on or standby the unit.

Parts Identification

A POWER Press this switch to turn the unit on or off. The standby indicator lights orange when the unit is in the standby mode. When the unit is turned on, the indicator lights blue. < If you use the system control function, leave the power switch being on. B Disc tray C Skip (.//) Use these buttons to skip tracks/files. (See page 13.) D Open/Close (L) Use this button to open or close the disc tray. E Play/Pause (G/J) Use this button to start or pause playback. F Stop (H) Use this button to stop playback. G REPEAT Use this button to select a repeat playback. (See page 15.) H Display I Remote Sensor When operating the remote control unit, point it towards the remote sensor.

Q CLEAR Use this button to clear a programmed track. (See page 16.)

R Search (m/,) During playback, use these buttons to search the part you want to listen to. (See page 13.) S FILE (°/‡) Use these buttons to select a file of MP3/WMA. (See page 14.)

U ENTER Use this button to confirm the selection of a folder/file. (See page 14.)

< You can also use the following buttons on the remote control unit (RC-1181) of the AG-H600 series receiver: REPEAT, Stop (H), SHUFFLE, Skip (.//), Play/Pause (G/J), Search (m/,) Refer to the manual of the AG-H600 series receiver.

J STANDBY/ON

Use this button to turn on or standby the unit. < While the system control functions are activated, this button does not work. To turn on or standby this unit, use the remote control unit (RC-1181) of the AG-H600 series receiver. K TIME Use this button to change the time information on the display. (See page 18.) L DISPLAY Use this button to change the information on the display. (See page 18.) M PROGRAM Use this button to enter the program mode. (See page 16.) N Numeric buttons Use these buttons to select a track/file number. (See page 14.) O FOLDER (°/‡) Use these buttons to select a folder of MP3/WMA. (See page 14.) P DIMMER Use this button to dim the display. (See page 17.)

MP3/WMA disc: Standby indicator Stop Total Files 144 Total number of files of the disc The standby indicator lights blue. < When the system control functions are activated, always set this switch on, and turn the unit on or standby using the remote control unit (RC-1181) of the AG-H600 series receiver. < When you press the play/pause button (G/J) (or the numeric buttons of the remote control unit) before closing the disc tray, the disc tray closes and playback starts. < Keep fingers clear of moving tray to avoid trapping them. 5 Press the play/pause button (G/J) to start playback. 2 Press the open/close button (L) to open the disc tray. Playback starts from the first track/file. Audio CD: 3 Place a disc on the disc tray with the printed label faced up. CD/3 T01 00:42 Current track number MP3/WMA disc: < The disc tray closes automatically after a minute. < Place a disc in the center of the disc tray. If the disc is not correctly placed, the disc tray may not open again after it closes. 4 Press the open/close button (L) to close the disc tray. Elapsed time of the current track Elapsed time of the current file (minutes and seconds) MP3/3 00:42 xxxxx xxx xxxxxx Song title, artist name and album name (scrolled) < When the play time of a file is more than 100 minutes, the elapsed time is displayed in hours and minutes and the colon flashes. < When the play time of a file is more than 4 hours (240 minutes), “OVER” appears instead of the elapsed time.

Note < It takes a few seconds to load a disc. No buttons work during loading. Wait until the total number of the tracks and/or the total play time of the disc are displayed. < Playback stops automatically after all the tracks/files are played. < “No Disc“ appears on the display when no disc is loaded in the unit. < MP3/WMA files recorded out of folders are recognized as the contents of “ROOT“ folder. Playback starts from the first file of the “ROOT” folder. < If there are folders that has no MP3/WMA file, this unit skips them. D To skip to the next or a previous track/file A To stop playback < When the skip button (.) is pressed during playback, the current track is played from the beginning. To return to the beginning of the previous track, press the skip button (.) twice. The selected track/file is played from the beginning. < When playback is stopped or paused, press the skip buttons (.//) repeatedly until the track/file you want to listen to is found. Then press the play/pause button (G/J). < During programmed playback, playback skips to the next or previous track in the program. < To start playback again, press the play/pause button (G/J). Playback starts from the first track/file. E To search for a part of a track/file During playback, hold down the skip buttons (.//) until the part you want to listen to is found. Press the play/pause button (G/J). < On the remote control unit, hold down the search buttons (m/,). “J” appears on the display. < To resume playback, press the play/pause button (G/J) again. < Playback stops when the searching reaches the end of the last track/file. C To open or close the disc tray Press the open/close button (L). < When you press the open/close button (L) during playback, playback stops and the disc tray opens. < After ejecting the disc, press the open/close button (L) again to close the disc tray.

ENGLISH Press the stop button (H). Press the skip buttons (.//). Direct Track/File Selection Folder/File Search You can use the numeric buttons of the remote control to select a track/file. While playing or playback is stopped, you can select and play a desired folder or a desired file in an MP3/WMA folder. Press the numeric buttons to select a track/file.

1 Select a folder. File 107: < If a numeric button is pressed and leave the unit more than 5 seconds, the selection will be entered. Playback starts from the selected track/file. < When the disc has no folder or only one folder, go to 3 . < The order of the folders may changed depending on the hierarchy of the folders. 2 Confirm the selection. Playback starts from the beginning of the selected folder. 3 Select a file if you want. 4 Confirm the selection. Playback starts from the selected file.

Repeat Playback Each time you press the REPEAT button, repeat playback changes as follows: RP 1 (Repeat one track) RP A (Repeat all) (Repeat off)

• MP3/WMA discs only < When you stop playback, repeat playback is cancelled. RP 1 (Repeat one track): The track/file being played is played repeatedly. When you select another track/file, the track/file you selected will be played repeatedly. When the SHUFFLE button is pressed, the tracks/files of the disc are played randomly. RP F (Repeat folder)* Shuffle Playback < To cancel shuffle playback, press the SHUFFLE button again. < When you stop playback, shuffle playback is cancelled. The unit repeats shuffle playback until you press the stop button (H). < If you press the skip button (/) during shuffle playback, next track is randomly selected and played. If you press the skip button (.), the current track/file is played from the beginning. You cannot go back to the previous track/file. < The numeric buttons, FOLDER buttons (°/‡) and FILE buttons (°/‡) do not work during shuffle playback. If you select “RP 1” while playback is stopped and select a track/ file, the selected track/file will be played repeatedly. RP F (Repeat Folder) (MP3/WMA discs only): All the files in the folder will be played repeatedly. When you select another folder, the files in the folder you selected will be played repeatedly. If you select “RP F” while playback is stopped and select a folder, the files in the selected folder will be played repeatedly. RP A (Repeat All): All the tracks/files are played repeatedly. < During programmed playback, the programmed contents are played repeatedly.

Programmed Playback (Audio CD only) CLEAR

Note < When you stop programmed playback, the total number of the programmed tracks and total time are shown on the display. < When you press the SHUFFLE button during programmed playback or you press the SHUFFLE button then press the play/ pause button (G/J) while programmed playback is stopped, shuffle playback starts, but program mode will not be cancelled. You can return to the programmed playback by stopping shuffle playback and pressing the play/pause button (G/J). You can play up to 30 tracks in a desired order. < Insert a disc before programming. To stop programmed playback Press the stop button (H). 1 Enter the program mode. Stop PROGRAM P-00 T00 < You cannot program during playback. 2 Select a track using the numeric buttons. Example: to select track/file 15 Stop PROGRAM P-01 T15 Program number < When the stop button (H) is pressed, playback stops, but program mode will not be cancelled. You can return to programmed playback by pressing the play/pause button (G/J). To check the programmed order Press the PROGRAM button repeatedly while playback is stopped. Selected track number Repeat the selection until you finish programming desired tracks. < If you attempt to program more than 30 tracks, ”P-full” (Program is full) appears and no more tracks can be programmed. < To correct a selection, press the CLEAR button. The last programmed track is cleared. < If you press the stop button (H), all the programmed tracks are cleared. 3 Start programmed playback. Press the play/pause button (G/J). < “PRG” is displayed during programmed playback and while it is stopped. < Playback stops automatically after all programmed tracks are played.

The track number and program number are shown on the display. “P-end” appears at the end of the program. < To return to the normal display of programmed playback, start and stop programmed playback. Dimmer To delete a track from the program While playback is stopped, press the PROGRAM button repeatedly until the track number to be deleted appears on the display, then press the CLEAR button. Each time you press the DIMMER button, the display changes as follows: NORMAL (Normal) The selected track is deleted from the program and the next track is displayed. To add a track to the program While playback is stopped, press the PROGRAM button repeatedly until the program number that you want to insert a track appears on the display. Then select a track using the numeric buttons. ENGLISH < If you hold down the CLEAR button for more than 3 seconds, all the tracks will be cleared. DIMMER (Dimmed) LIGHT OFF (Display off) Note < This setting is not memorized when the unit turns standby/on. The next time the unit is turned on, the display is illuminated as normal. < When the unit is operated during the setting is “LIGHT OFF“, the display turns normal briefly and will turn off again. < The display is turned off about 5 seconds after the last operation regardless of the dimmer setting, if Tone Direct is active on the AG-H600 series receiver linked with this unit through the system control function. < When you want to add a track to the end of the program, press the PROGRAM button repeatedly until “P-end” appears on the display. Then select a track using the numeric buttons. To clear the program While playback is stopped, press the PROGRAM button, then press the stop button (H). < When you press one of the following buttons, the program is also cleared: open/close (L), STANDBY/ON on the remote control unit, POWER

Display Changing the information You can change the information on the display. Changing the time information (Audio CD only) You can change the time information for audio CD playback. Each time you press the DISPLAY button, the information changes as follows. Audio CD: Each time you press the TIME button during playback, the time information changes as follows: Current track number and elapsed time of the current track CD/3 T01 00:42 Current track number and remaining time of the current track CD/3 T08 -03:02 < Music calender shows the track number up to 15. When the disc contains more than 15 tracks, “G” appears next to “15”. Current track number and the total elapsed time of the disc < While a track is played, its track number of the music calendar flashes. After playback of the track finishes, the track number disappears. Troubleshooting Specifications If you have any problems with the unit, please take a moment to look through this chart and see if you can solve the problem yourself before you call your dealer or a TEAC service center. No power. e Check the connection to the AC power source. Check and make sure the AC source is not a switched outlet and if it is, the switch is turned on. Make sure there is power to the AC outlet by plugging another item such as a lamp or fan. e While the system control function is activated, turn on the unit using the remote control unit (RC-1181) of the AG-H600 series receiver. e When you do not use the system control function, set the SYSTEM CONTROL SELECTOR switch to “SINGLE“. Remote control doesn’t work. e If the batteries are exhausted, change the batteries. e Use remote control unit within the range (5m) and point at the front panel. e Make sure that there are no obstacles between the remote control unit and the main unit. e If a fluorescent light is near the unit, turn it off. e While the system control function is activated, the STANDBY/ ON button on the remote control unit of this unit does not work. Use the same button on the remote control unit (RC1181) of the AG-H600 series receiver. ENGLISH No sound. e Check the connection to the amplifier/receiver. e Check the operation of the amplifier/receiver.
