2. How is percentage body fat (%BF) estimated?

Before using the scale, you should know…

%BF is measured by a method called Bioelectrical

Impedance Analysis (BIA). The use of BIA to estimate body fat has been pioneered since the seventies. It was only in the past few years that the estimation of body fat using BIA technology was successfully offered to the consumers as a compact bathroom scale. With the BIA technology, a low intensity electrical signal is sent through the body. The signal is very low and causes no bodily harm. Depending on the amount of body fat of the individual, the electrical signal will flow with a different degree of difficulty. The difficulty with which a signal flows through the body is called electrical impedance. Hence, by measuring the electrical impedance and applying to the data a proprietary algorithm, %BF can be estimated.

1. Why is it important to monitor percentage body fat (%BF)? The absolute weight traditionally determines whether or not a person is obese. Weight change in itself does not indicate whether it was the weight of body fat or muscle that had changed. In weight management, it is desirable that muscle mass be maintained while body fat is lost. Thus, monitoring the percentage fat of the body is an important step toward successful weight management and body health. The optimal %BF of an individual varies according to age and gender. The table that follows may be used as a guide: Standard for Men Rating Low Optimal Moderate High

<13% 14-20% 21-23% >23%

Source: University of Illinois Medical Center, Chicago, USA.

Mesure Low Optimal Moderate High

<19% 20-28% 29-31% >31%

Please be reminded that the %BF estimated with the scale represents only a good approximation of your actual body fat. There exist clinical methods of estimating body fat that can be ordered by your physician.

3. Why is it important to monitor percentage Total Body Water (%TBW) in the body? Water is an essential component of the body and its level is one of the health-indicators. Water makes up approximately between 50-70% of the body’s weight. It is present proportionally more in lean tissue compared to fat tissue. Water is a medium for biochemical reactions that regulate body functions.

ELECTRONIC BATHROOM SCALE - BODY FAT ANALYZER Waste products are carried in water from cells for excretion in urine and sweat. Water provides form to cells; helps to maintain body temperature; provides moisture to skin and mucosa; cushions vital organs; lubricates joints and is a component of many body fluids.

The amount of water in the body fluctuates with the hydration level of the body and state of health. Monitoring the level of body water can be a useful tool for one’s health maintenance. Similar to body fat estimation, the %TBW function provided in this scale is based on BIA. The estimated %TBW may vary according to your hydration level, that is, how much water you have drunk or how much you have sweated immediately prior to the measurement. For better accuracy, avoid fluctuation in hydration level prior to the measurement. The accuracy of the scale in estimating TBW will also decrease with individuals suffering from diseases that tend to accumulate water in the body. The optimal %TBW of an individual varies according to age and gender. The following chart and table may be used as a guide:

Source: University of Illinois Medical Center, Chicago, USA.

% Body Fat Range Optimal % total

Please be reminded that the % TBW estimated with the scale represents only a good approximation of your TBW. There exist clinical methods of estimating body fat that can be ordered by your physician.

4. When should I use the scale’s body fat and total body water functions? For maximum accuracy and repeatability, it is recommended that the scale’s body fat and total body water functions be used at approximately the same time of the day, e.g. before breakfast in the morning. It is also a good practice to avoid swings in hydration level of the body prior to the measurement. Establishing your own baseline value of %BF and %TBW and track their changes is better than merely comparing your %BF and %TBW value to the population’s normal value.

ELECTRONIC BATHROOM SCALE - BODY FAT ANALYZER ABOUT ATHLETE MODE

5. Why is the Athlete Mode necessary in a Body Fat Analyzer? It has been found that body fat estimation using BIA could overestimate the percentage body fat of adult elite athletes. The physiological variation of athletes in muscle density and level of hydration are two of the reasons said to account for the difference. The Athlete mode is selectable only for adults of 18 years of age or older. 6. What is the definition of an Athlete? The general consensus among researchers is that a quantitative dimension could be use in defining an athlete. For example, an athlete could be defined as a person who consistently trains a minimum of three times per week for two hours each time, in order to improve specific skills required in the performance of their specific sport and/or activity.

ABOUT DAILY CALORIE INTAKE

7. What are calories? In medicine, the quantity of energy contained in food is measured in kilocalories (one kilocalorie = 1,000 calories). The human body uses this energy to live and breathe and go about its everyday activities. We can use the notion of kilocalorie (Cal) or kilojoule, which is now the international unit. Diets however are counted in calories. Just remember that 1 Cal = 4.18 kilojoules (kjoules, or kJ). All food provides calories and all calories provide energy. The components of food (nutriments: protein, fat, carbohydrate) cover our energy needs. i.e. 1 g of proteins provides 17 kJ (4 kCal)

Nutriments (for one gram)

Carbohydrate Protein Fat

Other nutriments (Water, Vitamins, Minerals and

Fibre) do not provide energy. Food and drink are composed of a combination of Protein, Fat and Carbohydrate.

The energetic value of food therefore corresponds to the sum of calories provided by each nutriment.

It is always given per 100 g of food. 8. Which factors influence the calculation of a person’s energy requirements? Several factors influence the calculation of a person’s energy requirements. They correspond to the different origins of the body’s energy expenditure. a/ The basic metabolism: it is the minimum energy needed for everyday life. Even when resting, the human body is very busy: the heart beats, the brain sends its messages, the muscles work… the Basic Metabolism represents 60 to 70% of energy expenditure. b/ Age: children and teenagers burn more energy per kilogram of body weight than adults. Energy requirements increase until around the age of 20 then they start to reduce by 2% per decade until the age of 60 and then by 10%. c/ Gender: men spend more energy than women. Their body contains less body fat and 10 to 20% more muscle than women of the same age and height. Generally speaking, the energy requirements of men are 5 to 10% higher than those of women. Exceptions: a pregnant or breastfeeding mother needs a higher energy intake for the good health of mother and baby.

d/ Thermoregulation: it corresponds to the energy needed to maintain the body at its physiological temperature of 37°C. A person living in a cold environment will burn more energy. Modern living conditions (central heating, warm clothes) reduce this consumption. This variation factor has become negligible. e/ Thermogenesis: this is the energy burnt due to food intake, digestion of food and storage of nutriments. It represents 10% of total energy expenditure. f/ Muscular work: an active person burns more calories than a sedentary person. Washing, dressing, gardening, walking or sport are all activities that consume the energy provided by our body. Expenditure depends on the type of activity and its intensity.

calories than you eat). For example, for an adult aged 20 to 40, with the usual activities of the majority of the population, the recommended energy intake is 9200 kJ (2200 kcal) for women and 11300 kJ

(2700 kcal) for men.

9. Why is it important to monitor your Daily

Calorie Intake? Daily Energy Expenditure is defined by the OMS as “the quantity of energy needed to compensate for energy expenditure and ensure a size and body composition compatible with long-term good health and physical activity adapted to the economic and social context”. The most consequential variation factors are the Basic Metabolism and the Level of Physical Activity. The balance between expenditure and energetic intake ensures the stability of weight and good health. Intake lower than expenditure leads to weight loss by the reduction of body fat and muscle and, in certain cases, nutritional deficiencies. Inversely, intake that is higher than expenditure leads to weight gain by the storage of any excess as fat. Obesity and its pathological consequences can appear. Nutritionists, dieticians and other healthcare professionals agree that a healthy diet and reducing fat intake are the two essential factors for healthy and durable weight loss. Losing weight by reducing the daily calorie intake helps develop knowledge of what is good for your body. Healthy and durable weight loss is possible by following a balanced diet and by reducing the daily intake of calories until it is lower than energy requirements (you burn more 16

10. Why is it important to monitor your bone mass and muscle mass?

Two of the key problems associated with getting older are a gradual decline in muscle mass and a potential loss of bone density. That is why we developed these 2 new functions, the bone mass measurement and the body muscle measurement. Both of these measurements give you an estimated weight of your bone mass and your muscle mass with regards to your personal parameters (height, age, sex) as well as your total weight and body fat percentage. There are no recommanded results for bone mass and muscle mass. However, they can help you monitor your body composition and it’s changes: as you increase your activity, your weight may not change but you may transform your body fat into muscles and change your body shape. Also monitoring your bone mass may help you develop healthy bones through exercises and a calcium-rich diet. NB: This scale measures bone mineral content, which is the mineralized phase of bone in your body and skeletal muscle mass which is one of the 3 types of body muscles.

Regular weight watching and a very varied diet are two simple means of controlling balanced food intake. Be careful: dieting should be monitored by your doctor.

Terraillon body fat scale is designed and manufactured in a facility certified in ISO 9001

Quality Management System and ISO 14001 Environmental Management System. The scale uses the method of Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) to estimate body fat and total body water. It sends a harmless amount of electricity into the body, then estimates from the measured impedance of the body, the percentage total body water and percentage body fat. The body fat scale is also equipped with an Athlete Mode for athletes whose body build are different from non-athletes.

1. Do not use the scale on subjects who have a pacemaker. It may cause the device to malfunction. When in doubt, please consult your physician. 2. For pregnant women and people who have body implants such as artificial limbs, contraceptive devices, metal plates or screws, the results given by the Body Fat Analyser may be inaccurate. The reason for that is that fat is not as evenly distributed around the body as it would be at other times thus causing inaccurate results. However there is no health risk associated with using the Body Fat Analyzer.
