Power Supply

  • Do not connect this unit to same electrical outlet that is being used by an electrical appliance that is controlled by an inverter (such as a refrigerator, washing machine, microwave oven, or air conditioner), or that contains a motor. Depending on the way in which the electrical appliance is used, power supply noise may cause this unit to malfunction or may produce audible noise. If it is not practical to use a separate electrical outlet, connect a power supply noise filter between this unit and the electrical outlet.
  • The AC adaptor will begin to generate heat after long hours of consecutive use. This is normal, and is not a cause for concern.
  • Before connecting this unit to other devices, turn off the power to all units. This will help prevent malfunctions and/or damage to speakers or other devices.

Power Supply: Use of Batteries

  • When installing or replacing batteries, always turn off the power on this unit and disconnect any other devices you may have connected. This way, you can prevent malfunction and/or damage to speakers or other devices.
  • Batteries are supplied with the unit. The life of these batteries may be limited, however, since their primary purpose was to enable testing.
  • If the batteries run extremely low, the sound may distort or interruptions in the sound may occur at high volume levels, but this does not indicate a malfunction. If this occurs, please replace the batteries or use the included AC adaptor.
  • If operating this product on batteries, please use alkaline batteries or rechargeable Ni-MH battery.

Placement

  • Using the unit near power amplifiers (or other equipment containing large power transformers) may induce hum. To alleviate the problem, change the orientation of this unit; or move it farther away from the source of interference.
  • This device may interfere with radio and television reception. Do not use this device in the vicinity of such receivers.
  • Noise may be produced if wireless communications devices, such as cell phones, are operated in the vicinity of this unit. Such noise could occur when receiving or initiating a call, or while conversing. Should you experience such problems, you should relocate such wireless devices so they are at a greater distance from this unit, or switch them off.
  • Do not expose the unit to direct sunlight, place it near devices that radiate heat, leave it inside an enclosed vehicle, or otherwise subject it to temperature extremes. Also, do not allow lighting devices that normally are used while their light source is very close to the unit (such as a piano light), or powerful spotlights to shine upon the same area of the unit for extended periods of time. Excessive heat can deform or discolor the unit.
  • When moved from one location to another where the temperature and/or humidity is very different, water droplets (condensation) may form inside the unit. Damage or malfunction may result if you attempt to use the unit in this condition. Therefore, before using the unit, you must allow it to stand for several hours, until the condensation has completely evaporated.
  • Do not allow rubber, vinyl, or similar materials to remain on this unit for long periods of time. Such objects can discolor or otherwise harmfully affect the finish.
  • Do not paste stickers, decals, or the like to this instrument. Peeling such matter off the instrument may damage the exterior finish.

  • Depending on the material and temperature of the surface on which you place the unit, its rubber feet may discolor or mar the surface.
You can place a piece of felt or cloth under the rubber feet to prevent this from happening. If you do so, please make sure that the unit will not slip or move accidentally.

  • Do not put anything that contains water (e.g., flower vases) on this unit. Also, avoid the use of insecticides, perfumes, alcohol, nail polish, spray cans, etc., near the unit. Swiftly wipe away any liquid that spills on the unit using a dry, soft cloth.

Maintenance

  • To clean the unit, use a dry, soft cloth; or one that is slightly dampened. Try to wipe the entire surface using an equal amount of strength. Rubbing too hard in the same area can damage the finish.
  • Never use benzine, thinners, alcohol or solvents of any kind, to avoid the possibility of discoloration and/or deformation.

Additional Precautions

  • Use a reasonable amount of care when using the unit's buttons, sliders, or other controls; and when using its jacks and connectors. Rough handling can lead to malfunctions.
  • When connecting / disconnecting all cables, grasp the connector itself—never pull on the cable. This way you will avoid causing shorts, or damage to the cable's internal elements.
  • To avoid disturbing your neighbors, try to keep the unit's volume at reasonable levels.
  • When you need to transport the unit, package it in the box (including padding) that it came in, if possible. Otherwise, you will need to use equivalent packaging materials.
  • Some connection cables contain resistors. Do not use cables that incorporate resistors for connecting to this unit. The use of such cables can cause the sound level to be extremely low, or impossible to hear. For information on cable specifications, contact the manufacturer of the cable.
  • MMP (Moore Microprocessor Portfolio) refers to a patent portfolio concerned with microprocessor architecture, which was developed by Technology Properties Limited (TPL). Roland has licensed this technology from the TPL Group.

  • If the second wireless mic is on, no sound from the wired mic will be output.
  • This jack does not supply phantom power.

Playing the BA-55 in Stereo

The BA-55 contains two speakers. When the unit is placed vertically, it will play back in monaural mode. When the BA-55 is placed horizontally, it will automatically enter stereo mode; the two speakers will operate as left and right (L/R) stereo speakers.

In stereo mode, the BA-55's audio quality will be optimized for music playback. This is ideal when you've connected a CD player or digital audio player to play back music, or when you're playing a musical instrument.

  1. Place the BA-55 horizontally, so the rubber feet on its side are in contact with the floor.

ROLAND BA-55 - Playing the BA-55 in Stereo - 1

The STEREO indicator on the back panel (p. 7) will light.

ROLAND BA-55 - Playing the BA-55 in Stereo - 2

  • When placing the unit horizontally, handle with care to avoid dropping it, or allowing it to fall or tip over.

Using an Audio Player

Here's how to connect an audio player such as a CD player or digital audio player for playback.

  • To prevent malfunction and/or damage to speakers or other devices, always turn down the volume, and turn off the power on all devices before making any connections.
  • When connection cables with resistors are used, the volume level of equipment connected to the inputs (INPUT jacks) may be low. If this happens, use connection cables that do not contain resistors.

  • Place the BA-55 horizontally.

It will automatically enter stereo mode.

  1. Connect the output jacks of your CD player or digital audio player to the BA-55's LINE AUDIO Input jack

ROLAND BA-55 - Using an Audio Player - 1

  • As appropriate for the type of cable you're using, you can use either the stereo mini-phone jack or the RCA phono jacks.

  • Set the AUDIO/INST [VOLUME] to 0.

ROLAND BA-55 - Using an Audio Player - 2

  1. Switch on your audio player's power.
  2. Switch on the BA-55's power (p. 11).
  3. Raise the volume of your audio player.
  4. Play back music on your audio player.
  5. Use the AUDIO/INST [VOLUME] knob to adjust the volume.

Using an Instrument

Here's how to connect a keyboard to the LINE INST input jacks for performance.

  1. Place the BA-55 horizontally. It will automatically enter stereo mode.
  2. Connect your keyboard to the LINE INST input jacks. Use the L/MONO jack if you're making a monaural connection.

ROLAND BA-55 - Using an Instrument - 1

  1. Set the AUDIO/INST [VOLUME] to 0.

ROLAND BA-55 - Using an Instrument - 2

  2. Switch on the BA-55's power (p. 11).
  3. Raise the volume of the keyboard.
  4. Use the AUDIO/INST [VOLUME] knob to adjust the volume.

Applying Echo to the Mic's Sound

Here's how to add echo (reverbberation) to the sound of the mic.

ROLAND BA-55 - Applying Echo to the Mic's Sound - 1

Turning the ECHO [LEVEL] knob toward the right will gradually increase the reverberation. The left half of the knob's range (OFF-center) applies a natural-sounding rever, and the right half of the range (center - MAX) applies a repeating echo that's ideal for karaoke.

If the BA-55 is in stereo mode, an even more spacious echo effect will be produced.

ROLAND BA-55 - Applying Echo to the Mic's Sound - 2

The echo specified by this knob's setting can be turned on/off using the mic's [ECHO ON] switch and [ECHO OFF] switch.

ROLAND BA-55 - Applying Echo to the Mic's Sound - 3

  • Echo is applied only to the mic input. It won't be applied to sound that is input via the LINE jacks.

Adjusting the Tonal Character (Equalizer)

Here's how to adjust the tonal character of the sound produced by the speakers.

ROLAND BA-55 - Adjusting the Tonal Character (Equalizer) - 1

Turning the [HIGH] knob toward " ^+ " will boost the upper range, making the sound brighter.

If the sound is muffled, turning this knob toward "+" will make the sound clearer. If the sound is harsh, turning this knob toward "-" will make the sound more mellow.

Turning [LOW] knob toward " ^+ " will boost the low frequencies, giving the sound more depth.

If the sound lacks depth, turning this knob toward "+" will make the sound richer. If the sound is muddy, turning the knob toward "-" will make the sound clearer.

Preventing Feedback (Anti-Feedback)

This suppresses acoustic feedback (a whine or howl) caused by the mic.

What is acoustic feedback?

If a mic is pointed at the speaker, or if the system is operated at a high volume, an unpleasant oscillation (whine or howl) may occur; this is called feedback.

The BA-55 provides an anti-feedback function that suppresses feedback. The anti-feedback function will operate automatically when any of the MIC [VOLUME] knobs are turned to the right.

MEMO

The ANTI-FEEDBACK indicator will light when the anti-feedback function is operating. If both of the MIC [VOLUME] knobs are set to 0, the anti-feedback function will be off.

ROLAND BA-55 - MEMO - 1

  • If the anti-feedback function is not enough to suppress feedback, take the following steps

  • Change the direction of the microphone

  • Move the microphone away from the speakers
  • Lower the volume

Sounding a Chime

A chime will sound when you press the [CHIME] button. This is an ideal way to get the attention of the audience at an event before making an announcement.

ROLAND BA-55 - Sounding a Chime - 1

Use the CHIME [LEVEL] knob to adjust the volume of the chime.

Playing Sound Through Another System

The BA-55 provides LINE OUT jacks, which you can connect to a mixer or recorder.

Using these jacks, the sound being played through the BA-55 can also be played through another PA system, or recorded.

Automatically Turning the Power Off (Auto Power Off)

The BA-55 has an automatic power off function, which automatically turns off the power when the unit has not been operated for a certain period of time.

If the [AUTO POWER OFF] switch is on, the auto power off function will be enabled; the power will turn off automatically if there has been no operation or sound produced for approximately 2 hours. (When the BA-55 is shipped from the factory, the auto power off function is turned on.)

ROLAND BA-55 - Automatically Turning the Power Off (Auto Power Off) - 1

If you want to turn the power on again, set the [POWER] switch to the off position and then turn the power on.

Storing the Mic and AC Adaptor

The BA-55's rear panel has a storage compartment for holding the included wireless mic and AC adaptor.

To detach the compartment cover, loosen the two screws shown in the illustration.

The wireless mic and AC adaptor can be stored in the compartment.

ROLAND BA-55 - Storing the Mic and AC Adaptor - 1

Mounting the BA-55 on the Dedicated Stand

By using a speaker stand (Option: ST-A95), you can mount the BA-55 at the optimal height for use as a monitor speaker or simple PA device.

ROLAND BA-55 - Mounting the BA-55 on the Dedicated Stand - 1

NOTE

  • Always have at least one other person assist you when mounting the BA-55 on a speaker stand, or when adjusting the height of the stand while the BA-55 remains mounted on it.
  • Be careful not to pinch your fingers, when you assemble.

ROLAND BA-55 - NOTE - 1

1. Loosen tripod knob and open the tripod.

After opening the tripod, tighten the tripod knob again.

  • The distance between lower ends of the tripod should be 98 cm as shown in figures on the below. If the tripod is not opened wide enough, the stand may be unstable.

WARNING

ROLAND BA-55 - WARNING - 1

  • The BA-55 is designed to be used only in combination with a Roland-manufactured speaker stand (ST-A95).
Do not use it with any other stand.
  • As shown in the illustration below, adjust the speaker stand to a height of no more than 130cm , and open the tripod to a spread of 98cm or more.
  • Adjusting the speaker stand to a height greater than 130~cm or the tripod to a spread of less than 98~cm may allow the system to fall over, resulting in damage or personal injury.
  • If you use the BA-55 with a speaker stand, do not place it on an unstable or tilted location.
You must place the system on a stable, horizontal location.
  • Cables connected to the BA-55 should have enough slack, so that they will not cause an accident if someone trips over them.
  • To prevent accidents caused by falling objects, do not place anything on top of a BA-55 that is mounted on a speaker stand.
