Selecting Mounting Site

Mounting sites for smoke detectors are legally regulated in the standard DIN EN 14676, which applies in Germany.

  1. Smoke detectors should be installed in all rooms, hallways, storage areas, basements and storage rooms to provide comprehensive protection. It can be necessary to install more than one smoke detector, especially if the hallway is longer than 15 m. Use of several smoke detectors is recommended in rooms that are larger in area than 60 m ^2 or hallways longer than 10 m.

  2. Smoke detectors should be installed in all bedrooms.

Operating Instructions BR 8221

  1. For optimal protection, mount at least one smoke detector in every room and every hallway.
  2. Smoke detectors must always be mounted on the ceiling, as close to the centre of the room as possible. According to DIN EN 14676, a distance of at least 0.5 ~m must be maintained from all furnishings on the ceiling and from the walls. If the smoke detector is installed in an attic, it must be installed, at a roof slope of

a. of up to 20°, recessed at least 0.2 m - 0.5 m from the peak of the roof. The smoke detector may be mounted both to the side and directly on the top of the roof.

b. of more than 20^ horizontally and recessed by 0.2 m - 0.5 m.

Installation sites to avoid Do not install smoke detectors:

  1. Do not install smoke detectors in areas prone to drafts, e.g. near air intakes for air conditioners and ventilation.
  2. In bathrooms, shower rooms or in rooms where the temperature exceeds 39^ C or falls below 0^ C.
  3. Do not install in the peak of a room since smoke-free air can collect there in the event of a fire.
  4. Less than 0.5 m distance from the wall if it is mounted on the ceiling.

Operating Instructions BR 8221

  1. In kitchens, garages, washrooms or furnace/boiler rooms, since vapours from cooking, vehicle exhausts, dust and moisture can trigger a false alarm.
  2. In very dusty or dirty areas. Dirt and dust can collect on the smoke detector and impair its operational reliability. Here, you should use a heat detector, if necessary.
  3. At a distance of less than 0.30 m from lighting fixtures.
  4. At a distance of less than 1.50 m from fluorescent lamps.

Installation and Operational Start-Up of the Smoke Detector

The enclosed mounting material is suitable for concrete ceilings; for other sub-surfaces, suitable mounting material must be obtained separately in a specialty store.

Two-hole-mounting:

  1. Mark the places for the holes on the ceiling and drill
  2. Insert anchors in the holes
  3. Fit the base on the holes
  4. Screw the base onto the ceiling
  5. Insert the smoke detector into the base and turn clockwise

  6. The smoke detector is activated and the red LED will light up for about 2 seconds

Mute Function

If the smoke detector triggers a false alarm esp. due to cooking vapours, dirt or the like, the alarm can be muted or shut off using the test button on the smoke detector. After pressing the test button (about 1 second), two peeps will sound and the red LED will flash every 3 seconds to indicate that the smoke detector has been muted. The sensitivity is minimised to the extent that it will no longer sound false alarms. Its functional readiness however is retained so that the smoke detector will sound alarm as soon as the concentration of smoke increases heavily again. This reduction in the sensitivity of the smoke chamber is automatically reversed again after 10 minutes. The smoke detector will return to its normal sensitivity.

Note:

If you want to reverse the mute mode before it automatically re-sets, then press and hold the test button for about 1 second. The smoke detector will emit 3 short peeps and will be active again.

Alarm Storage Function

If a smoke detector sounds an alarm due to smoke or some source of disruption (but not due to pressing the test button), the alarm trigger event is stored in this smoke detector for up to 12 hours. The stored alarm trigger event is indicated by a short peep and a flash going off every 10 seconds. During this period the function of the smoke detector is not impaired. The memory can be deleted by holding the test button until an alarm tone sounds.

Self-Diagnostic

The smoke function automatically tests for correct function every 10 seconds.

Important:

If a fault is detected, it will constantly emit 2 short peeps.

Testing Function

There is a test button on the front of the smoke detector. Press the test button for about 5 seconds until the alarm sounds. It will then stop after you release the testing button.

Note:

If the smoke detector malfunctions, please contact our service department.

Maintenance and Care

In order to guarantee functional reliability of the smoke detector, maintenance in compliance with DIN EN 14676 must be completed at least once per year. Proceed as follows:

  • Remove dust from the smoke detector with a soft cloth.
  • If necessary, remove dirt with a damp cloth. Do not use any cleaners.
  • Test the device for proper function (see „Testing Function“).
  • If you do not hear an alarm response, the smoke detector must be replaced.

Operational Lifespan of Battery

The battery is permanently installed in the smoke detector and cannot be removed.

As soon as the battery weakens, a peep will sound every minute; when the battery is exhausted after 10 years, a longer peep will sound every minute, depending on which of these events occurs first. In these cases you should install a new smoke detector.

Smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years.

Evacuation Plan

It is recommended that all residents in a house work out an evacuation plan together. Give careful consideration to the fact that the escape route must under no circumstances be blocked by obstacles in the event of a fire. Furthermore, it must be the fastest and safest way to get to out of the building.

Disposal

When the product has reached the end of its operational life, it may not be disposed of in the regular household rubbish. The product must be disposed of at a collection site for processing of electrical and electronic devices.

Contact your city or community administrative offices to find out about your options for disposing of the product in a proper and environmentally sound fashion.
