Safety Information

2.1 Important considerations

Proper use

• The module is designed to measure the body temperature of persons and the temperature of liquids, surfaces and the surrounding area.
• It should be used together with Apple (iOS 3.0 or higher) devices (iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4G / iPod touch 2nd, 3rd, 4th generation / iPad / iPad 2).

Contraindication

• The system is not suitable for measuring the temperature of new-born infants up to 100 days old.

• It is not suitable for children under three years of age who have a weakened immune system or who react unusually in the presence or absence of fever.

• Do not operate the system in the vicinity of strong transmitters such as microwave and shortwave appliances.

• To ensure ThermoDock readings are accurate, keep at a minimum distance of about 30 cm from other wireless devices.
• Only use the unit for the specific purpose described in the instruction manual.
• Any misuse will void the warranty.
• The unit is not designed for commercial use.
• Using this thermometer system is no substitute for consulting a doctor.
• The thermometer module and the patient must remain in a stable environment for at least 30 minutes before measuring the temperature.
• This device is not designed to be used by persons (including children) with limited physical, sensory or mental abilities, or by persons with insufficient experience and/or knowledge, unless under observation by a person responsible for their safety,

or unless they have been instructed in the use of the device.

- Children must be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the device.

- The temperature in the forehead and temple area differs from the internal temperature, which is taken orally or rectally. Vasoconstriction, an effect which constricts the blood vessels and cools the skin, can occur during the early stages of a fever. In this case, the temperature measured by the ThermoDock may be unusually low. If the measurement therefore does not match the patient's own perception or is unusually low, repeat the measurement every 15 minutes. As a reference, you can also measure the internal body temperature using a conventional oral or rectal thermometer.

- A control measurement using a conventional thermometer is recommended in the following cases:

- if the reading is surprisingly low,

- if you are using the thermometer for the first time or want to familiarise yourself with it

- Babies' skin reacts very quickly to the ambient temperature. Therefore, do not take their temperature with the ThermoDock during or after breastfeeding, because the skin temperature may then be lower than the internal body temperature.

- If a fault occurs or the unit is damaged, do not attempt to repair the unit yourself, as this will void the warranty. Contact your supplier and only have repairs carried out by authorized service partners.

- Do not use the thermometer if it is damaged.

• Do not open up the device. It contains small parts which might be swallowed by children.
• Do not use the thermometer system in damp environments.
• Do not immerse the thermometer module in water or other liquids. It is not watertight.
• For cleaning, follow the instructions in "6.2 Cleaning and maintenance", page 31.
• Do not shake or tap the thermometer. Do not drop it.
• Protect the device from direct sunlight, extremely high or low temperatures, dirt and dust.
• Do not use the module if it does not work properly, if it has been dropped or has fallen into water or become damaged.

2.2 Information about VitaDock App

- Make sure that your Apple device is running on the latest operating system. For information about software updates, see the instructions for your Apple device.

- Make sure that your VitaDock software (app) is updated at regular intervals. For information about app updates, see the instructions for your Apple device.

- Users should set password protection in the device settings and protect their user profile in VitaDock with a password.

- The app shows a window with a warning when you change settings. Before the changes come into effect, you have to confirm the warning message.

- For the module to function correctly, the Apple device has to be sufficiently charged. Users should have a power supply unit or a charging device to hand.

- Make sure that there is always enough memory available to back up the reading data on your Apple device.

- If you receive a call or a text message during a reading, the reading is cancelled for safety reasons. If you want to prevent your reading from being cancelled, we recommend switching your iPhone to flight mode.

To derive the most success and to enjoy your MEDISANA ThermoDock for a very long time, we recommend that you read the following information on the use and care of the appliance carefully.

3.1 Items supplied and packaging

Please check first of all that the device is complete and is not damaged in any way. In case of doubt, do not use the appliance and contact your supplier or your service centre.

The following parts are included:

• 1 Carrying case
• 1 Instruction manual

The packaging can be reused or recycled. Please dispose properly of any packaging material no longer required. If you notice any transport damage during unpacking, please contact your supplier without delay.

WARNING

Please ensure that the polythene packing is kept away from the reach of children! Risk of suffocation!

3.2 Useful information on taking temperature with the ThermoDock measuring system

What is fever?

Our normal body temperature is between 36 °C and 37,5 °C. Fluctuations are quite normal, depending on time of day and the body's condition, for example in the female menstruation cycle. However, when body temperature rises above 38 °C, the phenomenon is known as fever.

Fever often occurs in the case of infections, and is a sign that the body's immune system is working overtime. This perfectly normal reaction to foreign bodies, germs and microorganisms should be checked at regular intervals. If the fever should exceed 39^ and not fall again within 1 to 2 days, you should definitely contact your doctor.

A fever is often associated with fatigue, pains in the limbs, shivering and chills. The course of an illness can be best monitored by taking a temperature reading 2 to 3 times a day at 4 to 6 hour intervals.

Always take the temperature at the same place and on the same part of the body. If you have to take the temperature several days in succession, always do it at approximately the same time of day so that the results are comparable.

Taking a temperature reading – quickly and accurately!

The MEDISANA ThermoDock Infrared Thermometer System allows precise, contact-free measurement of body temperature (at a distance of approximately 5 cm). The temperature is taken above the eyebrow between the forehead and the temple. The value of the energy radiated there is measured and converted to a temperature value. The result of the measurement is displayed on the connected Apple device within approx. 2 seconds. This enables you, for example, to take babies' temperature without disturbing their sleep.

Object temperature with live mode

Apart from measuring body temperature, the Thermo-Dock from MEDISANA can also be used in live mode to measure the temperature of objects (e.g. fluids, surfaces, ambient temperature). The temperature range for this function is between 0 and 100 °Celsius.

In live mode, you can measure the temperature of a variety of objects. The temperature is always current and displayed in a curve chart. The most recently measured temperature is displayed after live mode is ended.

3.3 Special features of the ThermoDock

The ThermoDock measuring system is designed so that you can use it easily, regularly and anywhere you choose. The measuring system is intended for persons to actively monitor their own temperature.

Your MEDISANA temperature measuring system ThermoDock consists of two components, the ThermoDock infrared temperature measuring module and the VitaDock software (app). These parts are specially designed to be used together and for their quality to ensure precise test results.

Precise test results can only be ensured when the monitor is used properly.

The VitaDock software (app) transmits the data generated by the ThermoDock module to the connected Apple device.

The VitaDock app allows users to save, display and analyse measurement data.

You can also transmit the measurement data to other people via e-mail.

NOTE

The app does not provide any diagnosis or therapy recommendations.

4.1 Installing the VitaDock® (app) software

MEDISANA is setting new standards in mobile health with VitaDock.

VitaDock app, the central software application for displaying and evaluating the body's vital signs and health values, includes software for:

• the infrared thermometer module ThermoDock®
• the blood pressure and pulse module CardioDock®
• the blood glucose module GlucoDock®
• the body analysis scales TargetScale®

The CardioDock, GlucoDock and TargetScale software is only fully functioning if the relevant modules or scales are used.

To operate your new ThermoDock infrared thermometer module for iPod touch, iPhone or iPad, you have to install the free VitaDock app.

You can download it from Apple's app store and then install it.

To download the software, you need an Apple ID with an e-mail address and password, as well as an active Internet connection. Downloading the software may be subject to charges from your telephone provider.

• To find the VitaDock (app) in the App Store, enter the search term "VitaDock".
• Once the software has been successfully installed, the new "VitaDock" icon appears on your device.

4.2 Settings

Before using for the first time

Check the date and time settings on your iPod touch, iPhone or iPad. The date and time are important for evaluating the readings.

Start the ThermoDock by touching the icon The display briefly shows the "Vita Dock" start page and then automatically switches to an entry screen for your personal data.

You can create a total of 4 user profiles in the VitaDock app.

In the first user profile, you can enter your personal data. Touching a text field opens a keyboard field with which you can edit your data.

You have the option of activating a password for using the VitaDock app.

To do this, touch the "Password" text field and specify a password. You are asked to enter it twice, to make sure of it.

If you activate the password function, you have to enter the password each time the app restarts.

After you save your data, you enter the VitaDock universe.

Choose: Measures temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit. You can use Default or Custom values as the target temperature.

Standard values are: 36.0 - 37.5 °C (96.8 - 99.5 °F).

5.1 Information on measuring temperature

Before use

• Acclimatise the device to the temperature of the room

The ThermoDock must adapt to the ambient temperature in order to measure body temperature precisely. This occurs automatically. However, the ThermoDock takes a certain amount of time to equalise its own temperature to that of the room. This depends on the difference in temperature and can take more than 30 minutes. Precise readings can only be taken once this process is completed.

NOTES

For the most accurate readings:

• The thermometer and the patient must remain in a stable environment for at least 30 minutes before measuring the temperature.
• Do not take a baby's temperature during or directly after breastfeeding.
• Do not use the thermometer in damp environments.
  • Patients should not drink or eat directly before or during a measurement, and they should avoid any physical exertion.
• Clean the area where you are taking the temperature and remove any dirt, hairs or sweat before moving the sensor to the measuring position.
• Do not remove the thermometer from the measuring position until it has beeped to signal the end of the reading.

• If the sensor becomes dirty during or after a reading, clean it with a cotton bud dipped in cleaning alcohol before putting the thermometer away.
  • Always take the temperature in the same place, because the readings will vary in different environments.

  – for new-born infants up to 100 days old,

The thermometer has been clinically tested, and its safety and accuracy inspected and confirmed, provided it is used in accordance with these instructions.

5.2 Measuring body temperature

To avoid disruption from an incoming call or text message during a reading, we recommend switching the iPhone to flight mode.

1. You can activate the ThermoDock's temperature measuring mode in two ways:

a) Plug & Play: Plug the ThermoDock module into the switched-on Apple device. Select the user profile and enter the password, if necessary. The VitaDock app starts automatically in temperature measuring mode.

b) Manual start: Start the VitaDock app. Select the user profile and enter the password, if necessary. The VitaDock universe appears.

Touch the "ThermoDock" application and tap on the "New" icon The "New measurement – Step 1" window opens. You are prompted to connect the ThermoDock module (or enter the value manually). Insert the ThermoDock module in your Apple device.

1. As soon as the ThermoDock system is active, a blue LED lights up on the ThermoDock.

2. The device begins to measure the temperature as soon as you touch the "Start" button on the display, accompanied by an acoustic signal. Immediately after touching the "Start" button, pass the ThermoDock from the centre of your forehead to your temple at a distance of approx. 5 cm. The module records the temperature at the forehead and temple and converts it into a measurement.

3. You will hear a signal when measuring is complete. After approx. 2 seconds the measurement appears on the display.

5.3 Measuring the temperature of an object in live mode

In live mode, you can measure the temperature of a variety of objects.

5.4 Calling up test results - statistics

You can view your test results any time without docking the ThermoDock. Touch the Statistics or Log book icon to call up the test results for the current user profile.

Touching the "stats" icon shows the test results of the last three days for the active user profile.

Rotate your device by 90° and touch the relevant field to view additional test results:

You have the option of sending monthly reports for the active user profile by e-mail – to your doctor, for example.

To set up the email address to send a report see your iPhone/iPod touch/iPad manual.

When the ThermoDock display is shown, touch the icon and slide the display to "Global settings".

You have the option of creating up to three additional user profiles in the VitaDock app.

There are two ways of doing this:

a) You can create a new user profile when you start the VitaDock app.
b) Touch "Personal settings" icon and log out of the current user profile by touching "Sign out".

5.8 Deleting user profiles

Restart the VitaDock app or close your user profile.

Touch "Edit".

The option of deleting the profile appears to the right of the user profile.

Touch "Delete" to delete the user profile.

The deleted user profile is shown in grey. For a period of 14 days, you have the option of reactivating the deleted user profile by touching it.

After 14 days, the user profile is automatically deleted completely from the app.

CAUTION!

The user profile, all the readings and entries are irreversibly deleted. There is no way to restore them.

6.1 Error messages

Display

The measurement result is too high. Please repeat measurement process OK

Description

The measured temperature is too high. "High" appears in the display if the reading is above 42.2 °C (body mode) or 100 °C (object mode). The bubble is red.

The measurement result is too low. Please repeat measurement process.

The measured temperature is too low. "Low" appears in the display if the reading is below 34 °C (body mode) or 0 °C (object mode). The bubble is blue.

The ambient temperature is too high. This may cause take measurement results. Are you sure to continue? CANCEL OK

The ambient temperature is too high. The ambient temperature is above 40 °C (object mode)

The ambient temperature is too low. This may rise above measurement results. Are you sure to continue? CANCEL OK

The ambient temperature is too low. The ambient temperature is below 16 °C (body mode) or 5 °C (object mode).

ThermoDock is not connected.

Reconnect the module. Contact the service centre if the error message appears again.

Low battery

Recharge the battery at the latest when capacity falls below 20 %.

6.2 Cleaning and maintenance

Your ThermoDock temperature measuring module is a high-precision instrument. Handle with care to avoid damaging the electronics and prevent defects. No regular maintenance or calibration is required if the module is used in accordance with these instructions.

The sensor is the most delicate part of the ThermoDock. Protect it from dirt and damage.

Observe the following instructions:

- Keep the module free from dirt, dust, water stains and fluids.

- Clean the sensor with a cotton bud dipped in warm water or 70% isopropyl alcohol.

- Ensure that the ThermoDock module is disconnected from your iPod touch / iPhone / iPad.

- Clean the surface of the module with a slightly damp cloth (with water and a mild detergent). Only use the unit again when completely dry.

- Never use aggressive cleaning agents, thinners, spirit or tough brushes.

- Never use cleaning agents on the module.

- Never immerse the module in water. Do not allow water or other liquids to penetrate the device. It is not watertight. Dry the module with a lint-free cloth after cleaning.

- Do not use or store the unit in an environment where the ambient temperature or humidity is too high or too low (see “Technical specifications”, page 33), in direct sunshine, in the vicinity of static electricity or in a dusty environment.

- Put the module back in its carrying case after each use.

- Do not store the module in a vehicle, bathroom or refrigerator.

6.3 Guidelines / Standards

This temperature measuring system meets the requirements of the EC standard 93/42/EEC. It is certified with the CE symbol (conformity symbol) „CE 0483“.

It corresponds to European standards EN 60601-1/+A1/+A2, EN 60601-1-2, EN 12470-5 and ASTM E1965.

Electromagnetic compatibility:

The device complies with the EN 60601-1-2 standard for electromagnetic compatibility.

6.4 Disposal

This module must not be disposed of together with domestic waste.

All users are obliged to hand in all electrical or electronic devices, regardless of whether or not they contain toxic substances, at a municipal or commercial collection point so that they can be disposed of in an environmentally acceptable manner.

Consult your local authority or your supplier for information about disposal.

The packaging can be reused or recycled. Please dispose properly of any packaging material no longer required.

7.1 Warranty and repair terms

Please contact your supplier or the service centre in case of a claim under the warranty. If you have to return the unit, please enclose a copy of your receipt and state what the defect is.

The following warranty terms apply:

1. The warranty period for MEDISANA products is three years from date of purchase. In case of a warranty claim, the date of purchase has to be proven by means of the sales receipt or invoice.
2. Defects in material or workmanship will be corrected free of charge within the warranty period.

3. Repairs under warranty do not extend the warranty period either for the unit or for the replacement parts.

4. The following is excluded under the warranty:

a. All damage which has arisen due to improper treatment, e.g. nonobservance of the user instructions.
b. All damage which is due to repairs or tampering by the customer or unauthorised third parties.
c. Damage which has arisen during transport from the manufacturer to the consumer or during transport to the service centre.

d. Accessories which are subject to normal wear and tear, as battery, disposable items etc..

1. Liability for direct or indirect consequential losses caused by the unit are excluded even if the damage to the unit is accepted as a warranty claim.
