You can switch the microphone position to ZOOM to record with the sound in front of you emphasised. The remaining battery level is displayed as below while this unit is operating. Blinking Battery/SD card slot cover 1 AAA LR03 battery (not supplied) Make sure the battery faces the right direction. Close the battery/SD card slot cover ( 4 and 5 ) ● If the battery runs out, “ ” blinks. Replace the battery as soon as possible. ” is ● When the battery runs out of power, “ indicated and then the power turns off automatically. ● Depending on the battery status or the operation content to use, even if the power turns off due to the battery exhaustion, this unit may be used for a while if turned on again. - If the battery is removed while the unit is on, data may be lost or this unit may be damaged. Set the clock after inserting a battery for the first time or replacing the battery. Button operations are ignored when the Hold function is on. To switch the Hold function on: Slide the OPR/HOLD switch to the [HOLD] side during recording or playback. ” appears and the Hold function turns on.

Slide the OPR/HOLD switch to [OFF] side while the unit is in the stop state. Auto power off: VQT4J69 The power automatically turns off after 30 minutes elapse when the unit is in a stop state. If the power is turned off by the auto power off function, slide the OPR/HOLD switch to the [OFF] side before turning the power on. Set the current date and time when turning this unit on for the first time. - Turn the power on. (➜ page 8) ENGLISH Setting the clock ● The clock operates with the monthly loss/gain of approx. 60 seconds at normal temperature. ● The clock setting will be lost if the battery is removed or completely exhausted.
File and Folder File Recorded audio data from the starting point to the ending point is saved as a file. The saved data is called a file. Status indicator
- When the unit is not in the stop state, press [STOP g/RETURN]. 1 Press [FOLDER]. Each press: Folder This is where files are stored. This unit has the following folders.
- “MIC” folder for microphone recording (➜ page 12).
- “LINE” folder for files recorded from other devices connected to this unit (➜ page 30).
- “MUSIC” folder for music (➜ page 25). Up to 199 files can be recorded in the “MIC” and “LINE” folders. Folders are created in the internal memory. When an SD card (➜ page 24) is inserted, folders are created in the same way on the SD card. In this manual, microSD/microSDHC card is written as “SD card”. VQT4J69 Selecting the folder ● When the “MUSIC” folder is selected for the first time after the unit is turned on, the status ” is displayed on the indicator blinks, “ screen, and the track list is updated.

Microphone position STEREO Operates as an ordinary stereo microphone. ZOOM Records with the sound in front of you emphasised. ZOOM Recommended uses Suitable for recording events such as a meeting or performance by a large number of people. Suitable for recording events such as a lecture or interview, where sound is emitted from a specific direction. ● Do not switch the microphone position during recording. The sound that occurs when switching is performed is also recorded. ● The microphone position function operates when the built-in microphone is used. It does not operate when an external microphone is connected for recording (➜ page 28) or when a different device is connected for recording to this unit (➜ page 30). Note when recording This unit is equipped with a high-sensitivity microphone. Accordingly, if a breath or wind directly hits the microphone during recording, the wind-cutting sound may be recorded or voice may be difficult to hear.
1. This can be prevented
by blocking the wind with your body so that the wind does not directly hit the unit.
2. During dictation recording,
slightly move this unit from front of your mouth or keep distance. Keep distance Turning the LOW CUT FILTER (➜ page 17) to ON reduces the sound of low frequency range. This may help the reduction of the wind-cutting sound. ● Sound may jump during recording (especially PCM recording) depending on use conditions of the internal memory and SD card. Formatting them on this unit (➜ page 14) before recording is recommended. VQT4J69 You can switch the microphone position to ZOOM to record with the sound in front of you emphasised. - When the unit is not in the stop state, press [STOP g/RETURN]. 1 Press [REC *]. (Recording starts.) Each press: Pause Resume recording
- If you press [MENU] during recording or while recording is paused, the indication switches between the remaining recording time and elapsed recording time. Stopping recording: Press [STOP g/RETURN]. The recording indicator lights on. (Blinks while paused.) Number of file being recorded (Blinks while paused.) VQT4J69 Remaining recording time
● Before recording, check that there is sufficient battery power remaining. ● Change the sound quality or microphone sensitivity as necessary. (➜ pages 16, 17) ● A recording scene selection function is available for simultaneously retrieving all the recording settings recommended for the recording scene. (➜ page 15) ● If the file size exceeds 2 GB during recording, recording is stopped temporarily at 2 GB, and then recording is continued with a new file. Nothing is recorded during the time (approximately 2 seconds) between recording temporarily stopping and then restarting. ● Note if your finger or an object touches this unit during recording, the noise will be recorded through the microphone.
- When the unit is not in the stop state, press [STOP g/RETURN].
- Select a folder. (➜ page 10)
- Select a file. (See below) Adjusting the volume Turn up the volume: Press +. Turn down the volume: Press –. Volume range is 0 to 20. (The factory setting is “12”.) If you turn the unit off with the volume set to 17 or more, the volume will be set to 16 next time the unit is turned on. ENGLISH Playing Operations during playback Displayed during playback Select a file Press u, i to select. Each time you press, the file number changes. File number Jump (Skip): Press u, i. Press u midway while playing a file and the playback jumps to the beginning of the file. To return to the previous file, press u within approx. 1 second from the beginning of the file. Fast backward/Fast forward (Search): Press and hold u, i. To stop: VQT4J69 Press [STOP g/RETURN]. Each press of [STOP g/RETURN] changes the displayed information (remaining recording time/Total playback time (Length of the selected file (duration of time))/current time/date/recording time /recording date ). This is not displayed for the “MUSIC” folder.
Deleting files and formatting Delete unnecessary files.
- When the unit is not in the stop state, press [STOP g/RETURN].
- Select the file or folder you want to delete. (➜ pages 10, 13) There are three methods to delete files. Select one file and then delete it. : Delete all files in the selected folder. (Files in subfolders and the actual folder cannot be deleted) : Delete all data such as all files in the internal memory or SD card and data in the folders displayed when the unit is connected to a computer. (format) 2 Press u, i to select the deletion method and press [q OK] to enter.
- When you want to delete only one file, select the method while making sure you do not accidentally select “ ” or
- If you selected “ ” for the deletion method, press u or i to select the internal memory ( ) or SD card ( ), press [q OK] to enter the selection, and then proceed to step 3 . 3 Press u, i to select “ and press [q OK] to enter.
The status indicator blinks during deletion. It may take several minutes until the deletion is complete.
- When “ ” appears, deleting or formatting is complete.
- Select “ ” to stop deleting or formatting.
- If you attempt to perform a format without inserting an SD card, “ ” is displayed. ● Deleted files cannot be restored. ● Save necessary files to the computer or external devices before formatting. ● Cancelling is not possible while formatting. ● Before deleting data, check that there is sufficient battery power remaining. ● Do not remove the battery or SD card while formatting. ) and folder deletion ( ), only files that can be played on this unit can be deleted. ● With file deletion ( However, Read-only music files transferred from the computer cannot be deleted using this unit. This unit offers recommended recording settings for each recording scene. Selecting the recording scene enables easy recording with the most appropriate settings.

The selected recording scene is displayed. To exit the setting screen, press [STOP g/RETURN]. ● If you select “ ” in step 3 , the unit returns to the state immediately before starting setting of the recording scene, and the recording scene is not displayed. ● If you change settings such as the sound quality after the recording scene is set, the selected settings overwrite the “ ”, and the recording scene indication disappears. ● The recording scene operates when microphone recording is used. Recording scene does not operate when another device is connected and the LINE/MIC switch is set to [LINE] (➜ page 30). Changing the sound quality You can change the sound quality. This allows you to provide the best sound quality for the particular purpose.
- When the unit is not in the stop state, press [STOP g/RETURN].
Press [MENU]. Press u, i to select “MODE” and press [q OK] to enter.
Press +, – to select “PCM”, “XP”, “LP”, or “SLP” and press [q OK] to enter. (The factory setting is “XP”.) To exit the setting screen, press [STOP g/RETURN]. The selected sound quality is displayed. ● Depending on the setting, the sound quality and remaining recording time (➜ page 51) will differ. (MP3 64 kbps) SLP (MP3 32 kbps) ● When the sound quality is set to “SLP”, the recording becomes monaural.
Switch the microphone sensitivity according to the volume of the sound source. When the sound source volume is loud, set the sensitivity to “ ” (LOW). When it is low, set the sensitivity to “ ” (HIGH).
- When the unit is not in the stop state, press [STOP g/RETURN]. 1 Press [MENU]. 2 Press u, i to select “ ” and press [q OK] to enter. 3 Press +, – to select “ ” or “ : Sets the microphone sensitivity to the high level. : Sets the microphone sensitivity to the low level. (The factory setting is “ ”.) 4 Press [q OK] to enter. Sound of low frequency range is reduced during microphone recording. Preventing unnecessary recording (VAS) When VAS (Voice Activated System) is set, if silence continues for approx. 2 seconds during microphone recording, the recording is paused automatically. If the unit detects sound, the recording resumes.
- When the unit is not in the stop state, press Adjusting the VAS operation level: [STOP g/RETURN]. Press u, i during VAS recording. (The factory setting is “
Press +, – to select “On” and press [q OK] to enter. Press u, i to select “VAS” and press [q OK] to enter. (The factory setting is “OFF”.) “VAS” is displayed. ● You can adjust the sound detection level from 1 to 5. ● If the audio to record is low, increase the VAS value (sensitivity level). If the sound is loud, decrease the VAS value. To exit the setting screen, press [STOP g/RETURN]. VQT4J69 To start VAS recording, press [REC *].
● For important recording, set the VAS setting to OFF. ● If the LOW CUT FILTER setting is ON, low frequency sound may be cut out and VAS recording may not activate. In this case, change the LOW CUT FILTER setting to OFF. (➜ page 17) ● If the recording is paused with no sound state, “VAS”, recording indicator, and “*” blink. When [REC *] is pressed from this recording pause state, the status is changed to normal recording pause state and “VAS” lights up.

After you set a timer recording, “ ” is displayed. At 1 minute before the specified time, the “ ”, recording indicator, and “ ” blink and the unit enters the standby state. “ ” blinks during timer recording. If you press [STOP g/RETURN] during a timer recording or standby, you can cancel the timer recording. ● If the power is off at the specified time, the power turns on and the timer recording starts, and then the power turns off at the end time. If the unit is in a playback state, playback stops and the timer recording starts. ● During timer recording, only stop operation and volume adjustment can be performed. Switch the Hold function to off before operation if it is on. ● Timer setting is disabled when the battery is replaced. Therefore, readjust the setting after replacing battery.
- When the unit is not in the stop state, press [STOP g/RETURN].
- If an SD card is selected as the recording destination, insert the SD card beforehand. (➜ page 24) ENGLISH Changing the playback speed A-B Repeat play The playback speed can be adjusted in 21 steps from the slow speed of 0.5 times normal speed (50%) to the fast speed of 2 times normal speed (200%). 1 Press [q OK] while playing. 2 Press u, i to adjust the playback speed. - i: Each press of this button increases the playback speed.
- u: Each press of this button reduces the playback speed. The playback speed can be adjusted in 10% steps for speeds faster than normal speed (100%), and 5% steps for speeds slower than normal speed (100%).
- Press [STOP g/RETURN] to return to normal speed (100%). VQT4J69 3 Press [q OK].
The setting value is confirmed. ● Normal playback may not be possible depending on the file. ● If you change the playback speed, NOISE CANCEL will not work. (➜ page 23) Playback repeats between the start point (A) and finish point (B) if those points are set.
- Set the shadowing function to OFF. (➜ page 21, steps 1 to 3 ) 1 Press [ERASE/A-B&] while playing. A-B Repeat indication The start point (A) is ” (lighting) set and “ and “ ” (blinking) are displayed. 2 Press [ERASE/A-B&] at the finish point (B). The display changes to ” (lighting) and repeat play starts. Cancelling A-B Repeat: Press [ERASE/A-B&] again. (A-B Repeat can also be cancelled with [STOP g/RETURN], u or i.) ● You cannot set A-B Repeat when the time between the start point (A) and finish point (B) is approx. 2 seconds or less. ● When only the start point (A) is set and playback continues until the end of the file, the end becomes the finish point (B) and A-B Repeat begins. ● A-B Repeat by setting the range using 2 files is not possible.
- When the unit is not in the stop state, press [STOP g/RETURN]. 1 Press [MENU]. 2 Press u, i to select “ ” and press [q OK] to enter. 3 Press +, – to select “On” and press [q OK] to enter. The shadowing function turns on. (The factory setting is “OFF”.) To exit the setting screen, press [STOP g/RETURN]. 4 Select the file you want to play with shadowing (➜ pages 10, 13) and press [q OK]. Practice No-sound section 5 Press [ERASE/A-B&]. The start point (A) is ” (lighting) set and “ and “ ” (blinking) are displayed. 6 Press [ERASE/A-B&] at the finish point (B). The indication changes to ” (lighting), shadowing starts, and A-B repeat playback and no-sound playback repeats. The shadowing icon lights on during A-B repeat playback, and blinks during no-sound playback. Shadowing icon Cancelling shadowing: Press [ERASE/A-B&] again. (Shadowing can also be cancelled with [STOP g/RETURN], u or i.) ● You cannot set shadowing when the time between the start point (A) and finish point (B) is approx. 2 seconds or less. ● When only the start point (A) is set and playback continues until the end of the file, the end becomes the finish point (B) and shadowing begins. ● Shadowing by setting the range using 2 files is not possible. VQT4J69 Shadowing is a learning method to repeat an example immediately after it is heard. You can use the shadowing function of this unit to repeat the A-B repeat section (example) and a no-sound section (practice). This is convenient for pronunciation or listening practice for language learning. ENGLISH Shadowing
Playback from a specified Repeat play (REPEAT) and hold [MENU] for at least position (TIME SEARCH) 1 Press approx. 2 seconds during playback Playback is possible from the time-specified position. 1 Press [MENU] during playback. Playback stops and the current playback position (time) is displayed. or while the unit is stopped. The repeat mode changes each time you press and hold [MENU] for at least approx. 2 seconds. Repeat indication 2 Set the playback start position. Press u, i to select “hour”, “minute”, and “second” and press +, – to change the values.
- Press [MENU] or [STOP g/RETURN] to enter the stop state. 3 Press [q OK]. Playback starts from the specified position. VQT4J69 Press [STOP g/RETURN] to stop the setting process midway. ● Time search playback applies only to the currently selected file. No indication: Plays back the files normally. Playback is performed from the selected file to the last file in one folder. The unit is stopped when the playback finishes. : Plays one file repeatedly. : Plays all files in the folder repeatedly. : For the “MIC” folder and “LINE” folder, the operation is the same as that for “ ”. For “MUSIC” folder (➜ page 40), all files (up to 999 files) within the folder are played repeatedly.
This function reduces noise during playback to make the target sound easier to hear.
- When the unit is not in the stop state, press [STOP g/RETURN]. 1 Press [MENU]. 2 Press u, i to select “NC” and press [q OK] to enter. Type Effect OFF Does not perform noise reduction.
Performs a large amount of noise reduction.
Performs a small amount of noise reduction. ENGLISH Reducing noise during playback (NOISE CANCEL) 3 Press +, – to select the type of NOISE CANCEL and press [q OK] to enter. (The factory setting is “OFF”.) To exit the setting screen, press [STOP g/RETURN]. VQT4J69 If this function is set to other than OFF, “NC” is displayed during playback. ● If you change the playback speed (➜ page 20), NOISE CANCEL will not work. ● During playback of a file with a sampling frequency of less than 16 kHz, NOISE CANCEL will not work.
Using an SD Card You can use a microSD/microSDHC card in addition to the internal memory. Use this unit to format a new SD card (➜ page 14) before use. Inserting the SD card
Turn off the power and open the battery/ SD card slot cover.
Insert the SD card and close the battery/ SD card slot cover. Align the SD card in the correct direction ( ) and insert it fully until a “click” sound is heard. Recording by connecting an external microphone Use this setting when recording by connecting an external microphone to the external microphone/Line-in jack of this unit.
- When the unit is not in the stop state, press [STOP g/RETURN].
Connect the external microphone. External microphone (not supplied) Slide the LINE/MIC switch to [MIC]. Insert securely. Press [REC *] to start recording. See page 12 for recording operations. ● Read the operating instructions for the connected device. ● If the recording level is too low or high, adjust the microphone sensitivity. (➜ page 17) ● The built-in microphone of this unit does not work if another device is connected to the external microphone/Line-in jack. ● If the connected external microphone is monaural, the sound for one channel may only be recorded.

Connecting this unit to a computer You can copy files recorded on this unit to the computer.
- Start the computer beforehand.
- Turn the unit off beforehand. 1 Pull off the USB plug cover. Do not use the supplied cable with other devices.
