Frequently Asked Questions - BVSTEM5501R OSTER

How do I prime the espresso machine before first use?
To prime the pump, add water to the reservoir, turn on the unit, set the switch to brew, wait for the temperature ready light, place a cup under the brew head, and run the brew cycle for 30 seconds without coffee. Then turn the knob off.
Why is my espresso not coming out?
Possible causes: the unit hasn't been used in a long time (needs priming), no water in the reservoir, coffee grind too fine, too much coffee in the filter, or the appliance is not turned on. Refer to the troubleshooting section for solutions.
How do I clean the frother body after use?
Fill the milk reservoir with water only, set the switch to steam, wait for the temperature ready light, then turn the control knob to steam to flush the frother system for 15-20 seconds. This removes residual milk.
Can I use sugar-roasted coffee in this machine?
No. Do not use sugar-roasted ground coffee or beans, as they will clog the filter and damage the appliance. Use only fine ground espresso coffee.
How often should I descale the machine?
For soft water, descale every 80 brew cycles; for hard water, every 40 brew cycles. Use white vinegar as described in the manual to remove mineral deposits.
Why is my milk not frothing properly?
Ensure the frother body is properly installed (push up until you hear a click), use cold whole milk, and check that the water reservoir is not empty. Also clean the frother body if blocked.
Can I brew espresso immediately after steaming milk?
No. The unit must be cooled down first. If you need to brew after frothing, place the empty portafilter, brew for 45 seconds without coffee, then wait for the temperature ready light before brewing.
How do I remove the filter from the porta-filter?
Make sure the filter is cool. Turn the filter to align the dimple with the notch on the porta-filter, then lift it out. Reverse the process to insert a new filter.
What type of coffee grind should I use?
Use a fine grind that looks like salt. If too fine (powder-like), water won't flow; if too coarse, extraction will be fast and weak. Tamp firmly but not excessively.
Is the appliance dishwasher safe?
No. The water reservoir, milk reservoir, porta-filter, filters, and drip tray should be washed by hand with mild detergent and water. Do not immerse the main unit.

  3. First remove and then wash the water reservoir, the milk reservoir, the porta-filter, the two filters and measuring scoop/tamper in a mixture of mild detergent and water. Rinse each thoroughly and place them back into the unit.
  4. Refer to the instructions on "PLACING THE PORTA-FILTER" section before placing or removing the porta-filter and any filter from the unit.
  5. Ensure frother system is properly installed.

CAUTION: Do not immerse the appliance in water or attempt to reach any of its internal parts.

STEP 2: PRIMING THE UNIT PRIOR TO FIRST USE

To prime the pump before the initial brew, run brewing cycle for 30 seconds following the steps below:

  1. Add water to the water reservoir.
  2. Press the On/Off button " ⏱ to turn the unit ON.
  3. Press the Brew/Steam Switch to the brew "position and wait for Temperature Ready Light" to turn on.
  4. Place a cup underneath the brew head and turn the control knob to the brew "position.
  5. After 30 seconds turn the control knob to the off "position. (Some water and/or steam may release during process).

The coffee should be freshly ground and dark roasted. You may want to try a French or Italian roast ground for espresso. Pre-ground coffee will only retain its flavor for 7 – 8 days, provided it is stored in an airtight container and in a cool, dark area. Do not store in a refrigerator or freezer. Whole beans are recommended to be ground just before use. Coffee beans stored in an airtight container will preserve flavor for up to 4 weeks.

THE GRIND

This is a vital step in the espresso making process if you are grinding your own coffee. It may require practice. The coffee must be of a fine grind. The correct grind should look like salt.

  • If the grind is too fine, the water will not flow through the coffee even under high pressure. These grinds look like powder and feel like flour when rubbed between fingers.
  • If the grind is too coarse, the water flows through the coffee too fast, preventing a full-flavored extraction. Be sure to use a quality grinder for uniform consistency.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

FILLING THE WATER RESERVOIR

  1. Fill the water reservoir with water (see figure 1). You may use either a jar to fill it up or remove it from the unit and then fill it up under the tap. Fill the reservoir with the desired amount of water below the "MAX" level on the reservoir. Never use warm or hot water to fill the water reservoir.

  2. If you have removed it from the unit to fill up with water, please make sure to place it back tightly in its place and return lid on the top of the water reservoir.

FILLING THE MILK RESERVOIR

If you plan to prepare a cappuccino or latte, remove the milk reservoir lid by twisting and lifting reservoir (see figure 2). Then pour the desired quantity of cold milk you estimate you will need into milk reservoir, making sure it is below the "MAX" level on the reservoir (see figure 3). Once finished, place the milk reservoir lid back onto the milk reservoir by twist and lock in place.

HELPFUL TIPS: The milk reservoir can be placed on drip tray or counter top. For optimal frothing performance, place milk reservoir on drip tray. Also for better frothing results its recommended to use whole milk.
