T517 DVD / CD / MP Player Owner's Manual

SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS FOR LATER USE. FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS AND INSTRUCTIONS MARKED ON THE AUDIO EQUIPMENT. 1 Readinstructions - All the safety and operating instructions should be read before the product is operated. 2 Retaininstructions - The safety and operating instructions should be retained for future reference. 3 HeedWarnings - Al wamings on the product and in the operating instructions should be adhered to. 4 Follow Instructions - All operating and use instructions should be followed.

5. Cleaning- Unplug this product from the wall outlet before cleaning

Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosol cleaners. Use a damp cloth for cleaning. 6 Attachments - Do not use attachments not recommended by the product manufacture as they may cause hazards

7. Water and Moisture - Do not use this product near water-for example,

near à bath tub, wash bowl, kitchen sink, or laundry tub: in à wet basement: or near a swimming pool and the like. Accessories - Do not place this product on an unstable cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table: The product may fall causing serious injury to à child or aduft, and serious damage to the product. Use only with à cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table recommended by the manufacture, or sold with the product. Any mounting ofthe product should follow the manufacturers instructions, and should use a mounting accessory recommended by the manufacturer. 9 A product and cart combination should be moved with care. Quick stops, excessive force, and uneven surfaces may cause the product and cart combination to overtur: 10 Ventilation - Slots and openings in the cabinet are provided for ventilation and to ensure reliable operation ofthe product and to protect it from overheating, and these openings must not be blocked or covered. The openings should never be blocked by placing the product on a bed, sofa, rug, or other similar surface. The primary method of isolating the amplifier from the mains supply is to disconnect the mains plug. Ensure that the mains plug remains accessible at all times. Unplug the AC power cord from the AC outlet if the unit will not be used for several months or more. 12 Grounding or Polarization - This product may be equipped with a polarized alternating-current line plug (a plug having one blade wider than the other). This plug will fi into the power outlet only one way. This is a safety feature. Ifyou are unable to insert the plug full into the outlet, try reversing the plug. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized plug. 13 Power- Cord Protection - Power-supply cords should be routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon or against them, paying particular attention to cords at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the product 14 Outdoor Antenna Grounding - fan outside antenna or cable system is connected to the product, be sure the antenna or cable system is grounded so as to provide some protection against voltage surges and built-up static charges. Article 810 of the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70, provides information with regard to proper grounding ofthe mast and supporting structure, grounding ofthe lead-in wire to an antenna discharge unit, size of grounding conductors, location of antenna discharge unit, connection to grounding electrodes, and requirements for the grounding electrode.

Never spill liquid of any kind on the product

Choose a location that is well ventilated (with at least several inches to both sides and behind), and that will provide à clear line of sight, within 23 feet/7 meters, between the T 5175 front panel and your primary listening/viewing position - this will ensure reliable infrared remote control communications. TheT 517 generates a modest amount of heat, but nothing that should trouble adjacent components. I is perfectiy possible to stack the T 517 on top of other components. QUICK START In case you simply cannot wait to experience the performance of your new NADT 517, we provide the following "Quick Start'instructions to get your underway. Please make all the connections to yourT 517 with the unit unplugged. 1 Using the supplied audio/video cable connector, connect the 15175 composite UDEO OUT to your TV/monitors corresponding input, Connect likewise the T 5175 AUDIO OUT to your TV/monitors applicable AUDIO input. Plug the AC mains plug into the AC outlet. Press the STANDBY button to switch ON the T 517. To start playback ofthe T 517; press the [OPEN/CLOSE] button Insert the media and press [à PLAY] button to start playback. FRONT PANEL STANDBY: Press this button to switch ON the T 517. The display window will illuminate. Ifthere is disc loaded, the display window will show the playback time status of the disc. If there is no disc inside, the display window will show‘NOdSC" (No Disc) Pressing the [OPEN/CLOSE] button of the DVD 8 will switch ON the T 517 from standby mode and at the same time open the disc tray.The T 517 can also be switched ON by pressing the [ON] or [PLAY] buttons ofthe remote control. Pressing the standby switch again turns the unit back to standby mode. Unplug the AC power cord from the AC wall socket to completely shut down theT 517. DISC TRAY: With the DISC TRAY open, insert a DVD, VCD, CD or other compatible media disc face down onto the tray. “Disc Error‘ appears at the On-Screen Display (OSD) ('Err'at the display window) ifthe disc is placed upside down (and it is a single sided disc). DISPLAY WINDOW: f there is disc loaded, the display window will show the playback time status of the disc. If there is no disc inside, the display window will show‘NOdSC" (No Disc) REMOTE SENSOR: Point the DVD 8 at the remote sensor and press the buttons. Do not expose the remate sensor ofthe DVD 8 to a strong light source such as direct sunlight or illumination. you do so, you may not be able to operate T 517 with the remote control Distance: About 23 ft (7 m) from the front of the remote sensor Angle: About 30° in each direction of the front of the remote sensor USB PORT: Connect an external USB device into this input. ER "==:] 7 PLAY: Press this button to start playback. IFthe disc tray is open, press this button to automatically close the tray and start playback ia disc is loaded. Use also this button for USB file playback 8 PAUSE: Toggle [PAUSE] button to switch between PLAY and PAUSE mode if a disc is loaded or if a USB file is at playback mode. 9 STOP: During disc playback, press this button to STOP and at the same time PAUSE disc playback. Press [PLAY] button to resume play from the spot it was stopped. IF [STOP] button is pressed consecutively during playback, disc or file playback will fully stop. 10 SKIP [HE@/p»1]}: Press [1] to skip forward or [4] to skip backward a track, fe or chapter. SCANL 44/2 1: Press and hold these buttons to scan at fast-fonward or fast-reverse during playback Each time the button is pressed, the speed increases until the maximum level is reached. The scanning speeding is shown in the OSD and may vary by disc type. The speed will be retained even after the button is released, but normal playback will resume once the next track, file or chapter is reached. To return to normal playback, press [PLAY] NOTE Not all media support maximum speeds for scanning.

ATTENTION! Please make sure that the T 517 is powered off or unplugged before making any connections. is also advisable to power-down or unplug all associated components while making or breaking any signal or AC power connections. 1 ACLINE CORD: Plug the AC power cord into a live AC wall socket Make sure all connections have been made before connecting to mains. 2 HDMI OUT: Using a HDMI cable (not supplied), connect the HDIMI OUT jack to the corresponding HDMI input jack of a compatible equipment like a HDTV, a projector or an AW Receiver. WARNING Before connecting and disconnecting any HDMI cables, both the T 517 and the ancillary source must be powered OFF and unplugged from the AC outlet. Failure to observe this practice may cause permanent damage to all equipment connected via HDMI sockets. IMPORTANT NOTICE Ifyour HDMI equipped TV is not capable of decoding DTS or Dolby Digital Bitstream, setthe T 5175 Dolby Digital or DTS setting at the “Audio Setup Menu” to “PCM" There may be a rushing noise heard if your TV is not capable of decoding the DTS (or Dolby Digital) itstream: most TV do not have this capability. 3 S-VIDEO OUT (120V version only): In general, the S-Video connection is superior to composite video and should be used if your TV/monitor provides the corresponding input. Connect to the corresponding S-Video input of à compatible monitor/television, projector, M receiver or processor using quality S-Video cable designed for video signal. 4 COMPONENT VIDEO OUT: Connect to the corresponding component video input of a compatible equipment like a monitor/television, projector, AW receiver or processor. Be sure to observe consistency in connecting the appropriate Y, Cb/Pb, Cr/Prjacks to the corresponding sources/inputs. Do not rely purely on the color coding of the jacks, which may not always be consistent among brands. NOTES + Only non-copy protected discs can be played back at 720p, 1080i and 1080p resolution. fthe disc is copy protected, it will be only displayed at 480/576i or 480p/576p resolution. For 230V version only: Make sure to set the ‘TV Output Select" to “YPbPr" for component video output to be available. 5 DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL}: Connect to the corresponding optical digital input of a compatible device such as CD recorders, receivers, computer soundeard or other digital processors. 6 IRIN: This input is connected to the output of an IR (infrared) repeater (Xantech or similar) or the IR output of another component to allow control of the T 517 from a remote location. Most NAD products with IR OUT are fully compatible with the T 517. 7 SCART/RGB OUT (230V version only): Using a SCART connector not supplied), connect to the corresponding SCART/RGB video input ofa compatible video monitor/TV. Be sure to observe the correct orientation ofthe SCART/RGB plug, 8 VIDEO OUT: Connect to the corresponding composite video input of à compatible moniter/television, projector, A receiver or processor using quality dual-RCA cable designed for video signals 9 AUDIO OUT: This analog audio output can be connected to the corresponding analog audio input of a compatible equipment Ike an amplifier receiver TV or stereo system 10 DIGITAL OUT (COAXIAL): Connect to the corresponding coaxial digital input of a compatible device such as CD recorders, receivers, computer soundeard or other digital processors.

SETUP USING THET 517 You may operate the T 517 from its front panel or via the DVD 8 remote control. Since the remote will be the primary controller for most cases, we wil focus on remote-controlled operations. Be sure also to read the section, “IDENTIFICATION OF CONTROLS - FRONT PANEL:

REGION MANAGEMENT INFORMATION

TheT 517 is designed and manufactured to respond to the Region Management Information that is recorded on a DVD disc. lfthe Region number described on the DVD disc does not correspond to the Region number shown on the back oftheT 517, the T517 cannot play that disc. The OSD wil display*Check Regional Code" ‘Erin the display window) when an incompatible region disc is loaded PLAYABLE DISCS TheT 517 has exceptional playability. it has support for DVD video, DVD4R, DVD4RW, VCD/SVCD with playback control (PBC), Audio CD and CD-R/CD- RW that contains audio titles, DivX, MP3, WMA and JPEG files. NOTE You cannot playback discs other than those listed above. To do so may renderthe T 517 permanently inoperable.

DISC LOADING AND PLAYBACK

There are two different disc sizes. Place the disc in the correct guide on the disc tray. IFthe disc is out of the guide, it may damage the disc and cause theT 517 to malfunction. “Disc Error appears at the On-Screen Display (OSD) C'Err'at the display window), ifthe disc is placed upside down (and it is a single sided disc) The following are important tips when loading a disc + Do not push the disc tray while it is moving. Doing so may cause the T 517 to malfunction. + Do not push up the disc tray or put any objects other than discs on the disc tray. Doing so may cause the T 517 to malfunction. + Keep your fingers well clear ofthe disc tray as it is closing. Be especially careful with children fngers around the closing disc traÿ, as there is à risk of personal injury. Press [PLAY], the disc tray is automatically closed. Playback of the first track starts if a CD is loaded.. For DVD, USB or other disc media, playback operation is accessible through their menu screen. NOTE Do not move the T 517 during playback. Doing so may damage the disc andtheT 517. ABOUT THE ON-SCREEN DISPLAY (OSD) TheT 517 employs a self-explanatory on-screen display“menu"that will appear on the connected video monitor/TV. These are required during the setup process (and are useful in day-to-day operation), so be sure to connect the monitor/TV before proceeding with the setup.

DISPLAY THET 517 SETUP MENU

Press the DVD 85 [SETUP] button for the Setup Menu OSD to appear. With the use of the DVD 85 navigation buttons, you may select various menus. f the Setup Menu does not appear, check your applicable video connections.

NAVIGATING THE SETUP MENU OSD AND MAKING CHANGES To navigate through the Setup Menu OSD options, please do the following using the DVD 8 remote control 1 Use [A/V] keys to move up or down the menu selections. 2 Press [R] to select a menu item. 3 Use {[A/W] keys to select through the options of a particular menu item. 4 Press [ENTER] to select a desired setting/selection. 5 Press [SETUP] or [PLAY] to exit the Setup menu To exit from a menu option, press repeatedly DVD 85 [4] key as applicable.

You can display the general disc playback status on the TV screen. Some items can be changed using the menu. To use the on-screen display: 1 Press the DVD 85 [DISP] during playback. 2 Press{A/W] to select an item. The selected item is highlighted.

3. Key-in the desired the number button, press [ 4/à ] or [ENTER] as

applicable. NOTES + Thedisplay feature may not be available for all dise media and is media dependent. Display disc OSD does not apply to audio only dises like CD and MP3/ WMA/JPEG files as they are already presented in their respective menu screens. Ifno button is pressed for about 10 seconds, the on-screen display disappears.

FACTORY DEFAULT SETTINGS

The procedure below will restore the T 517 to its factory default settings. 1 TheT 517 must be in a*No Disc'status. Press [SETUP] key ofthe DVD 8 and the Setup Menu OSD will appear. 2 Use {A/Y to highlight DISPLAY setup menu. Press [à ] to go to"TV Aspect"option. 3 Press [| again to highlight 169" Using the number buttons ofthe DVD 8 input in quick succession the following numbers - 1397139, then [ENTER] 4 The*SYSTEM INFORMATION" OSD will be shown. Press [ENTER] 5 Switch OFF theT 517. TheT 517 is now restored to its factory default settings. When you turn back ON the T 517, the"Menu Language" OSD will appear. Use [AZ ]to select your preferred language. Press [ENTER] You will again be prompted to press [ENTER] to confirm your selection:

The Setup Menu allows one to customize the operation ofthe T 517. Ifthe factory defaults do not suit your taste, you will need to use the setup menu to configure the T 517 yourself. To access and navigate through the Setup Menu selections, please refer to and follow the directions stated in the above section about"NAVIGATING THE SETUP MENU OSD AND MAKING CHANGES

Select the language you prefer for the audio track (disc audio), subtitles and the disc menu, Depending on the DVD media, only those Disc Audio, Disc Subtitle and Disc Menu languages recorded on the DVD media are available. DOLBY DIGITAL/DTS/MPEG

Set the type of digital audio signal Bitstream: Select'Bitstream'if you connect the T 5175 digital OUT jack 0 an amplifier or other equipment with a Dolby Digital, DTS or MPEG decoder. PCM: Select when connected to a two-channel digital stereo amplifier DVDs encoded in Dolby Digital or MPEG will be automatically downmixed to two-channel PCM audio. Off (for DTS only): Select"Off" when you connect the digital audio out jack to an equipment that has no DTS decoder. SAMPLE FREQ. (FREQUENCY) Setthe sampling frequency ofthe audio signal 48KHz: f your receiver or amplifier is not capable of handling 96 kHz signals, select 48 kHz. When this choice is made, this unit automatically convert any 96 kHz signals to 48 kHz so your system can decode them: 96KHz: f your receiver or amplifier is capable of handling 96 kHz signals, select 96 kHz. Area Code # Move » Select Some movies contain scenes that may not be suitable for children to view Many ofthese discs contain parental control information that applies to the complete disc or to certain scenes on the disc. Movies and scenes are rated from Level 1 to 8, depending on the country. Some discs offer more suitable scenes as an alternative. When you access Lock Setup Menu for the first time, you wil iniially be directed to the “Area Code” menu. This allows you to setup your own Parental Control Password from the onset. Continue on with the procedure below (applicable only for first time use or when the T 517 is restored to its factory settings). 1 While at'Area Code”line menu, press LD ]

2. Input your desired 4-digit password code. Press [ENTER]

3. Enter it again and press [ENTER to verify. You have now setup your

Parental Rating password. If you make a mistake before pressing LENTER] press [CLEAR] 4 You can now setup your Area Code as described below (from step number 3). NOTE Given that this is your frst time accessing the Lock setup menu, after setting up the Area Code, you will be redirected to the “Rating” menu for you to set up your parental rating. Follow the “Rating' setup procedure below. AREA CODE Enter the code of the country/area whose standards were used to rate the DVD video disc. Enter your four-digit password when prompted on the screen. 1 Scroll to [Password], Press [B] to select“Change” Press [ENTER] 2 Enter your old four-digit password using the numeric buttons (0-9), Press [ENTER] 3 You will be prompted to enter your new password. Enter the new four- digit password using the numeric buttons (0-9). Press [ENTER] 4 You will be prompted to verify your new password. Enter the newr four- digit password again. Press [ENTER]. LISTENING TO MUSIC DURING SLIDE SHOW

Ifthe disc contain music and photo files together, you can listen to music during slide show by selecting“HEZR" Use [A /V] to highiight"REZR" and then press [ENTER] to start slide show STILL PICTURE Press [PAUSE/STEP] during slide show. The player will now go into PAUSE mode. To return to the slide show, press PLAY or press [PAUSE/STEP] again.

MOVING TO ANOTHER FILE

Press [4/21] once while viewing a picture to advance to the next or previous file.

DIVX PLAYBACK Using the T 517, you can play DivX discs. LLISESSIONO2 1 Insert a disc and close the disc tray. The MOVIE menu appears on the TV screen. 2 Press [A/Y] to select a folder. Press [ENTER]. This player memorizes the last scene from the last disc that is viewed. The last scene remains in memory even if you remove the disc from the player or switch off the player If you load a disc that has the scene memorized, the scene is automatically recalled NOTE This player does not memorize the scene of a disc if you switch offthe player before commencing to play the dis. SCREENSAVER The screensaver appears when you leave the T 517 in Stop mode for about five minutes. IFthe Screensaver is displayed for fve minutes, theT 517 automatically turns itself off. SYSTEM SELECT (230V VERSION ONLY) You can select either Auto, PAL or NTSC to force the output oftheT 517 to the desired format. For example one can load a PAL media and display it in the NTSC format. Similarly one can load an NTSC media and display it in the PAL format. The Auto setting will detect automatically the media being played and display it. Depending on the type ofTV set you own, select the signal mode you wish to watch your disc. Press the [OPEN/CLOSE] button. To toggle through the system selection, press and hold [PAUSE/STEP] key of the remote control for more than 5 seconds to select a system - Auto, PAL or NTSC

Depending on the media, the following basic function controls ofthe T 517 can be accessed directly using the DVD 8 AUDIO SUBTITLE ANGLE REPEAT 0 Q

The AUDIO button will allow one to switch the audio language or format of the DVD media only ifthe DVD media supports the AUDIO button feature. Press [AUDIO] repeatedly to select desired audio language or format. SUBTITLE ANGLE AUDIO SUBTITLE from Itis possible to change the subritle language to a different languag the one selected at the initial settings. This operation works only with discs on which multiple subtitle languages are recorded 1 Press ISUBTITLE during playback. When no subtities are recorded, "OFF will be displayed

2. Press (SUBTITLE] repeatedy until the desired language is selected

When the desired language is not selected even after pressing the button several times, it means that the language is not available on the disc To eliminate the On Screen Subtities, press [SUBTITLE] repeatedly to select “OFF: ANGLE AUDIO SUBTITLE ANGLE

Some DVDs may contain scenes that have been shot simultaneously from à number of different angles. For these discs, the same scene can be viewed from each ofthese different angles using the [ANGLE] button. This function only works for discs having scenes recorded at different angles 1 Press [ANGLE] during playback. Angle number wi be displayed

2. Press [ANGLE] repeatedly until the desired angle is selected.

USING THET 517 - FUNCTION CONTROL

REPEAT To repeat the playback of a particular track or chapter, press the T 5175 REPEAT] key once. Pressing the same [REPEAT] key a second time will repeat all the tracks or title. Turn off repeat mode by pressing [REPEAT] button a third time. NOTE REPEAT feature does not apply to JPEG files. RPT A-B

To repeat a sequence, implement the following procedures 1 Press [RPT A-BJ at your chosen starting point -‘A' appears on the TV screen.

Use [ZOOM] to enlarge the video image. RECALLING/CLEARING À MARKER

1 Press SEARCH during playback. 2 Use the [ 4/2] buttons to select the marker to be recalled/cleared 3 Press [ENTER] to recall a marker. Or press [CLEAR] to clear a marker.

4. Play resumes from the point corresponding to the selected marker, or

the selected marker is cleared NOTES + These operations work only with discs for which the elapsed playing time appears in the DVD display window during playback or stop mode. Some subtitles recorded around the marker may fail to appear (DVD). Allthe markers are cleared when the power is turned off or the disc is removed. RAA The [TITLE] and [MENU] buttons are used to display via OSD, the title headings and menus ofthe DVD and other applicable media. Some movie discs may contain two or more titles. IFthe disc has a title menu recorded on it, the [TITLE] button can be used to select the movie title. (The details of operation differ depending on the disc used) Press [TITLE] and a list of the titles on the disc are displayed. Depending on the disc, pressing [TITLE] again will resume play from the scene when [TITLE] was first pressed. Press [ENTER], [PLAY] or the numeric button(s) to select desired title. The selected title now starts playing, Some DVDs have unique menu structures called DVD menus. For example, DVDs programmed with complex contents provide guide menus, and those recorded with various languages provide menus for audio and subtitle language. Press [MENU] during play; the DVD menu available on the disc is nowr displayed. Pressing [MENU] again resumes play from the scene when MENU was fist pressed OPERATION

REFERENCE TROUBLESHOOTING CONDITION No power. The power is on, but the T 517 does not work. No picture. No sound. TheT 517 does not start playback. The remote control does not work properly. POSSIBLE CAUSES + The power cord is disconnected! + No disc is inserted. + The TV is not set to receive DVD signal output. + The video cable is not connected securely. + Unit output setting and TV resolution capabilties mismatch + The equipment connected with the audio cable is not set to receive DVD signal output. + The power ofthe equipment connected with the audio cable is turned off. + The AUDIO output settings are incorrect. + An unplayable disc is inserted. = The rating level is set. + The remote control is not pointed at the remote sensor on the T 517. + The remote control is too far from the T 517. + The remote control batteries are dead. POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS + Plug the power cord into the wall outlet securely. + Insert a disc. + Select the appropriate video input mode on the TV. + Connect the video cable secure + Check TV capability. + Check mode of connections (eg. S-Video, Component etc + Check unit Resolution setting according to TV capability. + Select the correct input mode ofthe audio recelver so you can listen to the sound from theT 517. + Turn on the equipment connected with the audio cable. + Check audio output settings as configured in the Audio Setup menu + Insert a playable disc. (Check the disc type, color system and area code) + Cancel the rating function or change the rating level + Point the remote control at the remote sensor oftheT 517. + Operate the remote control closer to the T517 + Replace the remote control batteries.

HANDLING DISCS Do not touch the playback side ofthe disc. Hold the disc by the edges so that fingerprints do not get on the surface. Never stick paper or tape on the disc. STORING DISCS CLEANING DISCS from the center out.

After playing, store the disc in its case. Do not expose the disc to direct sunlight or sources of heat and never leave it in à parked car exposed to direct sunlight.

Fingerprints and dust on the disc can cause poor picture quality and sound distortion. Before playing, clean the disc with a clean cloth, Wipe the disc:

Do not use strong solvents such as alcohol, benzine, thinner, commercially available cleaners, or anti-static spray intended for older vinyl records.
