THANK YOU FOR CHOOSING NAD.
The T 517 DVD/CD/MP Player is a technologically advanced and highly capable product — yet we have invested great effort in making it simple and easy to use. We have been careful to ensure that the T 517 is as musically transparent, faithful to every video detail and spatially accurate as possible, incorporating much of what we've learned from a quarter-century's experience designing audio, video and home-theater components.
As with all our products, NAD's "Music First" design philosophy guided the T 517's design in such a way that it can confidently promise you state-of-the-art visual fidelity and audiophile-quality music listening for years to come.
We encourage you to take a few minutes now to read right through this manual. Investing a little time here at the outset might save you a good deal of time later, and is by far the best way to ensure that you make the most of your investment in the T 517, and get the most from this powerful and flexible component.
One more thing: We urge you to register your T 517 ownership on the NAD Worldwide Web site:
http://NADelectronics.com/warranty
For warranty information contact your local distributor.
GETTING STARTED
UNPACKING AND SETUP
WHAT'S IN THE BOX
Packed with your T 517 you will find:
• An audio/video cable connector
• The DVD 8 remote control with 2 (two) AAA batteries
• This owner's manual
SAVE THE PACKAGING
Please save the box and all of the packaging in which your T 517 arrived. Should you move or otherwise need to transport your T 517, this is by far the safest container in which to do so. We've seen too many otherwise perfect components damaged in transit for lack of a proper shipping carton, so please: Save that box!
CHOOSING A LOCATION
Choose a location that is well ventilated (with at least several inches to both sides and behind), and that will provide a clear line of sight, within 23 feet/7 meters, between the T 517's front panel and your primary listening/viewing position - this will ensure reliable infrared remote control communications. The T 517 generates a modest amount of heat, but nothing that should trouble adjacent components. It is perfectly possible to stack the T 517 on top of other components.
QUICK START
In case you simply cannot wait to experience the performance of your new NAD T 517, we provide the following "Quick Start" instructions to get you underway.
Please make all the connections to your T 517 with the unit unplugged. It is also advisable to power-down or unplug all associated components while making or breaking any signal or AC power connections.
PLAY A CD OR DVD MOVIE
1 Using the supplied audio/video cable connector, connect the T 517's composite VIDEO OUT to your TV/monitor's corresponding input. Connect likewise the T 517's AUDIO OUT to your TV/monitor's applicable AUDIO input.
2 Plug the AC mains plug into the AC outlet.
3 Press the STANDBY button to switch ON the T 517.
4 To start playback of the T 517; press the [OPEN/CLOSE] button.
5 Insert the media and press [▶ PLAY] button to start playback. You should hear audio and see an image on the TV/monitor (If one or the other fails to appear, check your TV/monitor's input settings or the T 517 audio/video connections).
Enjoy the movie or music, but be sure to set aside time to read this manual thoroughly to set up and configure your T 517 according to your preference.
ABOUT THE T 517
Though the T 517 is among the most technically sophisticated DVD/CD/MP players, we worked hard to make it one of the most musically transparent components available as well - this is what we mean by NAD's "Music First" design philosophy. Here are just a few examples
- The T 517 includes the High Definition Digital Interface (HDMI) with HDCP encryption, allowing high definition audio and video signals to be transferred among applicable components, processors and TV Displays in a purely digital format.
- HDMI digital video output with upscaling up to 720p, 1080i and 1080p depending upon your TV's compatibility.
- Using the high quality 12-bit 148-MHz video DAC, the T 517 ensures highly accurate playback of delicate, low-level video signals as well as produce vivid picture that is faithful in every detail. On the other hand, the audiophile quality 24-bit, 192-kHz audio D/A converters make the T 517 well protected from noise caused by even minute fluctuations in current from the power supply. This high performance audio D/A converter ensures that all the sound you hear is as clear and noise free as possible thereby maintaining the delivery of dynamic, smooth and expansive audio sound.
- The T 517 has exceptional playability. It has support for DVD video, DVD±R, DVD±RW, VCD/SVCD with playback control (PBC), Audio CD and CD-R/CD-RW that contains audio titles, DivX, MP3, WMA and JPEG files.

USING THE T 517
You may operate the T 517 from its front panel or via the DVD 8 remote control. Since the remote will be the primary controller for most cases, we will focus on remote-controlled operations. Be sure also to read the section, "IDENTIFICATION OF CONTROLS - FRONT PANEL".
REGION MANAGEMENT INFORMATION
The T 517 is designed and manufactured to respond to the Region Management Information that is recorded on a DVD disc. If the Region number described on the DVD disc does not correspond to the Region number shown on the back of the T 517, the T517 cannot play that disc. The OSD will display "Check Regional Code" ("Err" in the display window) when an incompatible region disc is loaded.
PLAYABLE DISCS
The T 517 has exceptional playability. It has support for DVD video, DVD±R, DVD±RW, VCD/SVCD with playback control (PBC), Audio CD and CD-R/CD-RW that contains audio titles, DivX, MP3, WMA and JPEG files.
NOTE
You cannot playback discs other than those listed above. To do so may render the T 517 permanently inoperable.
DISC LOADING AND PLAYBACK
There are two different disc sizes. Place the disc in the correct guide on the disc tray. If the disc is out of the guide, it may damage the disc and cause the T 517 to malfunction. "Disc Error" appears at the On-Screen Display (OSD) ("Err" at the display window), if the disc is placed upside down (and it is a single sided disc).
The following are important tips when loading a disc
