How do I change the sanding belt on the Ferm FBS-950N?

Unplug the sander. Lay it on its side with the drive belt cover down. Loosen the sanding belt fastener (4) and remove the old belt. Place a new belt ensuring the direction arrows match the direction indicator (5). Retighten the fastener.

How do I align the sanding belt if it runs off-center?

Use the adjusting knob (12) on the side. Turn it clockwise to move the belt inward, counterclockwise to move it outward until the belt runs parallel to the housing edge.

Can I use the Ferm FBS-950N for wet sanding?

No, the sander is not suitable for wet sanding. Use only for dry sanding.

How do I attach the dust bag?

Insert the wire bracket inside the dust bag into the adapter, with the bracket end pointing upward. Then slide the dust bag onto the dust collection opening on the machine.

How do I activate continuous operation?

First press the on/off switch (7) to start the sander. Then press the blocking switch (8) and release the on/off switch. To stop, press and release the on/off switch again.

What type of extension cord should I use?

Use an approved extension cable suitable for the power input. The minimum conductor size is 1.5 mm². If using a cable reel, unwind it completely to avoid overheating.

How often should I clean the ventilation slots?

Regularly clean the ventilation slots to prevent motor overheating. Use a soft cloth or brush after each use or when you notice dust buildup.

What should I do if the dust extraction is poor?

Check if the dust bag is full and empty it regularly. Also clean the dust collection opening and ensure the bag is properly attached. If using a vacuum cleaner, verify the connection.

Can I sand metal with this sander?

Yes, the belt sander can be used for grinding iron, plastic, or similar materials. However, do not use the same belt for wood and metal to avoid contamination.

What does the double insulation mean?

Double insulation means the tool has two layers of insulation, so no earth wire is required. It provides protection against electric shock even if the internal insulation fails.

Specific safety instructions

• If you are working with the sanding machine, wear always ear protectors and dust mask.
  • The sanding machine is not suitable for wet sanding.
• Check if the switch is not in position "ON", before you connect the mains plug to the mains voltage.
• Keep the mains lead always away from moving parts of the tools.
• Use safety glasses, especially when you sand above your head.
• Do not bring pressure to your machine, this will only delay the sanding.

The dust that is produced while working can be detrimental to health, inflammable or explosive. Suitable safety measures are required. Always wear suitable safety equipment, for example a dust mask, and use the dust bag.

The belt sander is the perfect tool to sand wood and to grind iron, plastic or similar materials. The belt sander must be used for the rough work for the normal sanding work an orbital sander must be used.

Immediately switch off the machine when:

• Excessive sparking of the carbon brushes and verticiliosis in the collector.

Electrical safety

When using electric machines always observe the safety regulations applicable in your country to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock and personal injury. Read the following safety instructions and also the enclosed safety instructions.

Always check that the power supply corresponds to the voltage on the rating plate.

Class II machine. Your machine is double insulated; therefore no earthwire is required.

Replacing cables or plugs

Immediately throw away old cables or plugs when they have been replaced by new ones. It is dangerous to insert the plug of a loose cable in the wall outlet.

Using extension cables

Only use an approved extension cable suitable for the power input of the machine. The minimum conductor size is 1.5 mm ^2 . When using a cable reel always unwind the reel completely.

3. OPERATION

Always observe the safety instructions and applicable regulations.

Choice of the sand-paper

Coarse sand-paper (grain 50) removes in general the bigger part of the material and fine sand-paper is used for the finishing. If the surface is not even, then start with rough sand-paper. Further you use middle coarse sand-paper(grain 80) to remove the scratches left behind by the coarse sand-paper and finally you take fine sand-paper (grain 120) for the finishing.

Before assembly the sanding belt always remove the plug from the mains.

• Put the machine on its side, with the drive belt cover down wards.
• Loosen the sanding belt fastener (4).
• Remove the sanding belt from the machine
• Put a new sanding belt on the machine, make sure that the direction arrows on the sanding belt are pointing in the same direction as the direction indicator (5).
• Fasten the sanding belt fastener again (4).

If the sanding belt doesn't run parallel with the outer edge of the housing, the sanding belt must be aligned. Move the sanding belt in the correct position with the adjusting knob (12). By turning the adjusting knob clockwise the sanding belt will move to the inside and by turning anti-clockwise the sanding belt will move to the outside.

• To switch the machine on press the on/off switch (7).
• To switch the machine off release the on/off switch.

If continuous operation is required the blocking switch (8) must be used:

• Switch the machine on to press the on/off switch.
• Press the blocking switch and release the on/off switch.
• To switch the machine off press the on/off switch again and release the on/off switch.

A complete dust bag is enclosed. Put the wire-bracket (inside the dust bag) into to the adapter of the dust bag (when not mounted). The end of the bracket has to point upwards. Use the dust bag to collect dust which is released during sanding.

- Put the dust bag on the dust collection opening

- Empty the dust bag regularly in order to obtain an efficient dust extraction.

The adapter of the dust bag can also be used to connect a vacuum cleaner to the machine.

Grip

The use of the belt sander is made easier because of the two grips one on the front side and one on the back. Through that you can hold the machine with two hands, you have a better control of the machine and there is less risk to becoming in touch with the moving parts. Hold the belt sander always with both hands.

Operating instructions

Make sure that the machine has reached its full speed before placing the machine on the work piece. This will prevent an overload of the machine.

For sanding wood, place the machine approximately 15° out of the grains of the wood. Move the belt sander continuous over the work piece.

• Do not bend the sanding belts
• Do no use the same sanding belt for sanding wood and metal
• Do not bring too much pressure to your machine, this will only delay the sanding.

4. SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE

Make sure that the machine is not live when carrying out maintenance work on the motor.

This machine has been designed to operate over a long period of time with a minimum of maintenance. Continuous satisfactory operation depends upon proper machine care and regular cleaning.

Malfunction

Should the machine fail to function correctly, a number of possible causes and the appropriate solutions are given below:

1. The electromotor gets hot

- The cool ventilation slots in the motor are stopped up with dirt. - Clean the cool ventilation slots.

• The motor is defect.
- Please contact the service address on the warranty card.

2. The connected machine does not work

- Interruption in the mains connection.

- Check mains connection for fracture.

- Please contact the service address on the warranty card.

3. The dust is not absorbed

• This can be caused by a stopped up dust extraction
• Clean your dust collection opening

Repairs and servicing should only be carried out by a qualified technician or service firm.

Cleaning

Regularly clean the device's casing with a soft cloth, preferably after each use. Keep the fan slits free of dust and dirt. Remove stubborn dirt using a soft cloth, dampened with soapy water. Do not use solvents such as benzene, alcohol, ammonia, etc, which might damage the plastic parts.

Lubrication

The device does not need any additional lubrication.

Defects

If a defect appears due to a part wearing out, please contact the service center on the warranty card. At the end of these instructions there is an exhaustive overview of the parts that can be ordered.

Environment

To prevent damage during transport, the appliance is delivered in a solid packaging which consists largely of reusable material. Therefore please make use of options for recycling the packaging.

Damaged and/or disposed of electrical or electronic devices must be dropped off at recycling stations intended for that purpose.
