Frequently Asked Questions - XKS-401P Cotech

Can I use this pump for saltwater?
No, the pump is not suitable for saltwater. It is designed for clean or muddy water, swimming pool water, and washing water. Saltwater will cause corrosion and damage the pump.
What size hose fits this pump?
The included universal hose union supports 25 mm (1") and 32 mm (1¼") barbed hoses, as well as a 1" male thread. A 32 mm hose provides the best capacity.
How do I adjust the float switch?
To adjust the water level at which the pump starts, change the length of the float cable in the clip. Shortening the cable between clip and float lowers the start level, while lengthening it raises the start level.
What should I do if the pump runs but doesn't pump water?
First, check for air in the pump or a blocked outlet. Clean the hose and straighten any kinks. If air is trapped, wait 60 seconds for purging, then restart. Also ensure the water level is above the minimum.
Can the pump be used in a swimming pool with people?
No. The pump must never be used in a swimming pool or pond if people or animals are still in the water. Always disconnect power before entering water.
What is the maximum particle size the pump can handle?
For model XKS-401P, the maximum particle size is 5 mm. For larger particles, consider model XKS-751PW which handles up to 35 mm.
How do I clean the pump?
Unplug the pump from the power supply. Remove any debris from the water inlet. If chlorinated water was pumped, rinse the pump by pumping clean water afterwards.
Why does the pump stop suddenly?
The pump has thermal motor protection. If it overheats, it shuts off automatically. Once the motor cools, it restarts automatically. Ensure max water temperature is not exceeded (35 °C).
Can I use an extension cord with this pump?
You can use an extension cord, but ensure the electrical connections are placed in a dry place and protected from water. Use a residual current device (RCD) that trips at <30 mA.
What should I do if the pump doesn't stop when water level drops?
This usually means the float is prevented from falling. Reposition the pump so that the float can move freely. Ensure the float cable is not tangled or obstructed.

Safety

  • Always use a residual current device (RCD or RCCB) which trips at <30 mA between the pump and the power supply.
  • Always inspect the pump before using it, especially the power lead and plug. Never use the pump if it is damaged.
  • If the mains lead is damaged it must only be replaced by a qualified technician. Contact our Customer Services.
  • Make sure that any electrical connections (extension lead, RCD, etc.) are placed in a dry place and protected from overflowing water and floods.
  • Do not expose the mains lead to extreme heat, oil or sharp edges.
  • The pump is not designed for continuous use.
  • Protect the pump from frost.
  • The pump is suitable for pumping clean or muddy water with a maximum particle size of 5 mm for 40-7908 and 35 mm for 40-7909, swimming pool water or washing water. Bear in mind that sand and other abrasive substances in the liquid that is pumped will increase the wear and tear and reduce the capacity of the pump.
  • The pump must never be used in a swimming pool or pond if people or animals are still in the water.
  • The pump is waterproof and submersible to a depth of max. 8 m.
  • Make sure that the pressure head does not exceed 8 m.
  • The pump must not be used in corrosive, flammable or explosive liquids such as petrol, kerosene or thinners. Neither must the pump be used for grease, oil, salt water, urine or toilet sewage water.
  • The temperature of the pumped liquid must not be greater than 35^ C.
  • Dry-running should be avoided, as this soon wears the pump out. Turn off the pump as soon as water has stopped coming out of the hose.
  • Avoid running the pump with the discharge outlet closed for more than ten minutes.
  • The pump has a built-in thermal motor protection and automatically shuts off when it gets overheated. The motor starts again automatically when the motor has cooled.
  • If chlorinated water, such as swimming pool water, has been pumped, clean water should be pumped afterwards to rinse out the pump.

  5. Universal hose union 32 mm and 25 mm + 1"and 1¼" male thread

  6. Outlet (1¼" female thread)
  7. Base with inlet

The pump is intended for domestic use; in the home and garden. Suitable uses:

  • Emptying containers
  • Transporting liquids
  • Pumping water from springs and barrels
  • Bilge pumping boats
  • Circulating water for limited periods

Before Use

Hose Connection

Connect the supplied universal hose union to the outlet (6). The universal hose union is fitted with a 32 mm (1¼") and 25 mm (1") diameter barbed hose connectors and a 1" male threaded hose connector. 32 mm hoses provide the best capacity.

If the 32 mm barbed hose connector or the 1" threaded connector are to be used, the end of the nipple (a) should be cut off as shown in the figure.

Cut off the parts of the universal hose union (b) that are not needed (if using thick hose).

Adjusting the Float Switch

By adjusting the float cable in the clip, the water level required to activate the pump can be adjusted.

  • If the length of the cable between the clip (3) and float (4) is shortened the starting level is lowered.
  • If the length of the cable between the clip (3) and float (4) is lengthened the starting level is raised.

Positioning and Transportation

  • The pump should be placed in a stable position (especially automatic pumps).
  • The float (3) must be free to move (especially on automatic pumps).
  • The inlet must not be blocked in any way; the pump should therefore be placed on a level surface.
  • Do not use the mains lead or float to lift or carry the pump. Always use a rope tied to the handle when lowering or raising the pump.

Use

Automatic Operation

When the mains lead has been connected to a wall socket the pump will be automatically switched on and off by the float switch.

Manual Operation

Tie up the float and switch the pump on/off by either using the switch on the wall socket if it has one or by pulling the plug out of the wall socket. Do not let the pump run dry.

Care and maintenance

Unplug the pump from the power supply and remove any debris from the water inlet.

Troubleshooting guide

Problem Possible cause Possible solution
The pump runs but doesn’t pump- Air in pump, outlet is blocked- Air trapped in suction pipe- Pump is blocked- When the pump starts the water level falls to below the minimum level- Clean the hose, straighten any kinks, etc.- Wait 60 seconds until the pump is purged of air, switch it off and then start it again- Unplug the pump from the power supply and remove any debris from the water inlet.- Place the pump lower in the water.
The pump won’t start or stops under load.- The thermal protection device has tripped.- No power supply- Dirt lodged in the pump- Unplug and clean the pump Remember that the max liquid temperature is 35°C- Check fuses and RCD, etc.- Unplug the pump from the power supply and remove any debris from the water inlet.
The pump runs but the volume pumped falls suddenly- Pump is blocked - Unplug the pump from the power supply and remove any debris from the water inlet.
Pump doesn’t stop when water level has sunk- The float is prevented from falling- Place the pump so that the float can move freely

Disposal

Dispose of your waste responsibly, sort and recycle where possible. All machines, hoses and packing material should be sorted and handled according to local environmental regulations.
