Frequently Asked Questions - HL-1050 BROTHER

How to install the toner cartridge in the Brother HL-1050 printer?
Open the top cover, remove the drum assembly, flip the lever of the used cartridge forward to close the shutter, remove it. Take out the new cartridge from its packaging, shake it 5 to 6 times, remove the protective tape, insert it into the drum aligning the guide bar, then push the lever back to open the shutter. Replace the drum and close the cover.
What to do in case of a paper jam?
Open the top cover and remove the drum. Gently pull out the jammed paper. Also check the multi-purpose tray. Close the cover. If the printer does not resume, press the main button on the control panel. Never pull paper from the output tray to avoid toner stains.
How to interpret the control panel indicators?
The Ready (Paper) indicator is on in ready mode, flashes during warm-up or cooling. Data (Toner) flashes when receiving data, is on if data remains in memory. Drum lights up when the drum is nearing its end of life. The Alarm indicator flashes in case of an error, often combined with another indicator to indicate the nature of the problem.
How to clean the interior of the printer?
Turn off the printer and unplug it. Open the top cover, remove the drum. Gently wipe the scanner window with a soft, dry cloth. Flip the drum and clean the primary corona wire by sliding the blue tab several times. Return the tab to its starting position (▲ mark). Reinstall the drum and close the cover.
What types of paper can I use?
The printer accepts plain paper (60-157 g/m²), envelopes (DL, C5, COM-10, Monarch), special laser labels and transparencies, and planner sheets. Avoid curled, highly textured, or pre-printed paper. Preferably use recommended paper such as Xerox 4200 or equivalent.
How to connect the printer to a Macintosh?
You need to install the optional RS-100M serial interface board. Set the slide switch to Apple (RS-422A). Use an appropriate cable ('Macintosh to ImageWriter II' or 'Apple System Peripheral 8') and install the provided Macintosh driver. The port selection in the Chooser must match the physical port used.
What does the Drum indicator mean?
The Drum indicator indicates that the drum is nearing the end of its life. You can continue printing for a while, but plan to replace it as soon as print quality decreases. To turn off this indicator, install a new drum (DR-300).
How to resolve a 'Memory full' error?
For Windows, reduce the print resolution or the document complexity. Under DOS or Mac, lower the resolution. For the HL-1050, install an additional SIMM module (up to 36 MB) and enable the Page Protection function in the driver. You can also change graphics settings in the Windows driver.
The printer does not print, what should I check?
Make sure the printer is powered on, the toner cartridge and drum are correctly installed, the interface cable is connected, and the appropriate Windows driver is selected. Check the indicators: if Alarm flashes, refer to the error table. If Ready flashes quickly, the printer is cooling down; open the cover to speed it up.
How to save toner?
Enable the Toner Save Mode via the Windows driver. You can choose a 25% or 50% reduction in toner consumption. This mode is ideal for drafts. The printer also enters Sleep Mode after 5 minutes of inactivity to reduce power consumption.
