5 Safety instructions

General power tool safety warnings

WARNING

Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations and specifications provided with this power tool.

Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.

Save all warnings and instructions for future reference.

The term "power tool" in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.

1) Work area safety

a) Keep your work area clean and well-lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.

b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.

c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

2) Electrical safety

a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
b) Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
f) If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.

3) Personal safety

a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
b) Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as a dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
c) Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair and clothing away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
g) If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.

h) Do not let familiarity gained from frequent use of tools allow you to become complacent and ignore tool safety principles. A careless action can cause severe injury within a fraction of a second.

4) Power tool use and care

a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or remove the battery pack, if detachable, from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such precautionary measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
d) Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
e) Maintain power tools and accessories. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool's operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
h) Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery handles and grasping surfaces do not allow for safe handling and control of the tool in unexpected situations.

5) Service

a) Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.
b) Never attempt to service damaged batteries. Any type of battery maintenance shall be carried out only by the manufacturer or an authorised customer service centre.

Safety instructions for all saws

Sawing process

DANGER

Do not place your hands in the sawing area or on the saw blade. Hold the additional handle or the motor housing with your second hand. If both hands hold the saw, they cannot be injured by the saw blade.

a) Do not reach beneath the workpiece. The protective cover cannot protect you from the saw blade beneath the workpiece.
b) Adjust the cutting depth to the thickness of the workpiece. Less than one full tooth height should be visible beneath the workpiece.
c) Never hold the workpiece that is to be sawn in the hand or over the leg. Secure the workpiece on a stable support. It is important to fasten the workpiece well, in order to minimise any risk of physical contact, jamming of the saw blade or loss of control.
d) When performing work during which the tool attachment can meet with concealed power lines or its own connection cable, hold the power tool by the insulated gripping surfaces. Contact with a live cable will also energise the metal parts of the electrical tool and will lead to an electric shock.
e) When performing a longitudinal cut always use a stop or a straight edge guide. This improves the cutting accuracy and reduces the possibility of the saw blade jamming.
f) Always use saw blades with correct size and shape (diamond versus round) of arbour holes. Saw blades that do not match the mounting hardware of the saw will run off-centre, causing loss of control.
g) Never use damaged or incorrect saw blade washers or screws. The saw blade washers and screws have been specially designed for your saw, for optimum performance and operational safety.

Additional instructions

a) Do not use grinding discs.
b) Make sure that a suitable saw blade for the material to be cut is selected.

c) Saw blades designed to cut wood and similar materials must comply with EN 847-1.
d) The saw may only be used for sawing wood, plastic and light building materials.
e) Only use saw blades with a speed marking equal to or higher than the specified speed of your product.
f) Only use saw blades with 165 mm diameter that match the inscriptions on the saw blade.
g) Avoid overheating the saw teeth.
h) When sawing plastic, avoid melting of the plastic. Use the correct saw blades for the material to be cut. Replace damaged or worn saw blades immediately. When the saw blade overheats, stop the machine. Allow the saw blade to cool down before using the machine again.
i) Adjust the cutting depth to the thickness of the workpiece. Less than one full tooth height should be visible beneath the workpiece.
i) Wear a dust mask.
k) Wear hearing protection and safety goggles during the entire operating period.

Further safety instructions for all saws

Kickback - causes and corresponding safety instructions

  • Kickback is a sudden reaction to a hooked, jammed or incorrectly aligned saw blade, which leads to an uncontrolled rebounding of the saw, whereby it moves out of the workpiece in the direction of the operator.
  • If the saw blade hooks or jams in the closing sawing gap, it is blocked and the motor power forces the saw back in the direction of the operator.
  • If the saw blade skews or is incorrectly aligned in the saw cut, the teeth of the rear saw blade edge can hook into the wooden surface, which results in the saw blade moving out of the sawing gap and the saw jumping back in the direction of the operator.

Kickback is the result of incorrect use or misuse of the saw. It can be prevented by suitable precautionary measures, as described in the following.

a) Hold the saw firmly with both hands and bring your arms into a position in which you can absorb the kickback forces. Always stand to the side of the saw blade; never bring the saw blade in line with your body. During kickback, the circular saw can jump backwards, although the operator is able to control the kickback forces using suitable measures.
b) If the saw blade jams or you interrupt your work, switch off the saw and hold the saw calmly in the material, until the saw blade has come to a standstill. Never attempt to remove the saw from the workpiece or draw it backwards whilst the saw blade is moving, otherwise kickback can occur. Determine and remedy the cause of the saw blade jamming.
c) If you wish to restart a saw that is inserted in a workpiece, centre the saw blade in the sawing gap and check that the saw teeth are not hooked in the workpiece. If the saw blade is hooked in, it can move out of the workpiece or cause kick-back when the saw is restarted.

d) Support large panels to minimise the risk of saw blade pinching and kickback. Large panels tend to sag under their own weight. Panels must be supported on both sides, that is both close to the sawing gap and at the edge.
e) Do not use blunt or damaged saw blades. Saw blades with blunt or incorrectly aligned teeth cause increased friction, jamming of the saw blade and kick-back due to the sawing gap being too tight.
f) Before sawing, determine the cutting depth and cutting angle settings. If you change the settings during sawing, the saw blade can jam and result in kickback.
g) Apply particular caution when sawing in existing walls or other areas that are not visible. The plunging saw blade can jam in concealed objects during sawing and result in kickback.

Function of the lower protective cover

a) Check that the lower protective cover closes correctly before every use. Do not use the saw if the lower protective cover does not move freely or does not close immediately. Never clamp or bind the lower protective cover in the open position. If the saw should accidentally fall to the floor, the lower protective cover may be bent. Open the protective cover with the pull-back lever and make sure it moves freely and does not touch the saw blade or any other parts with all cutting angles and depths.
b) Check the condition and function of the spring for the lower protective cover. Have the saw maintained before use, if the lower protective cover and spring do not function properly. Damaged parts, sticky deposits or adhered chips cause the lower protective cover to function with a delay.
c) Only open the lower protective cover by hand for special cuts, such as "dip and angle cuts". Open the lower protective cover with the pull-back lever and release it as soon as the saw blade dips into the workpiece. For all other sawing operations, the lower protective cover should operate automatically.
d) Do not place the saw on the workbench or the floor without the lower protective cover covering the saw blade. An unprotected saw blade running on moves the saw against the cutting direction and saws anything in its path. Note the run-on time of the saw blade here.

Safety instructions for the use of saw blades

  • Avoid uncontrolled release of the saw unit in the lower end position.
  • Do not use damaged or deformed saw blades.
  • Do not use saw blades with cracks. Separate cracked saw blades. Repairs are not permitted.
  • Do not use saw blades made of high speed steel.
  • Check the condition of the saw blades before using saws.
    • Make sure that a suitable saw blade for the material to be cut is selected.

- Only use saw blades recommended by the manufacturer. Saw blades designed to cut wood and similar materials must comply with EN 847-1.

- Only use saw blades for which the maximum permissible speed is not lower than the maximum spindle speed of the saw and which are suitable for the material to be cut.

- Observe the direction of rotation of the saw blade.

- Only use saw blades if you have mastered their use.

- Observe the maximum speed. The maximum speed specified on the saw blade may not be exceeded. If specified, observe the speed range.

- Clean dirt, grease, oil and water off of the clamping surfaces.

- Do not use any loose reducing rings or bushes for the reducing of holes on saw blades.

- Make sure that fixed reducer rings for securing the saw blade have the same diameter and have at least 1/3 of the cutting diameter.

- Make sure that fixed reducer rings are parallel to each other.

- Handle saw blade with caution. They are ideally stored in the originally package or special containers. Wear protective gloves in order to improve grip and to further reduce the risk of injury.

- Prior to use, make sure that the saw blade meets the technical requirements of this saw and is properly fastened.

- Only use the supplied saw blade for cutting wood, never for the processing of metals.

- Use only a saw blade with a diameter that matches the specifications on the saw.

- Use additional workpiece supports, if required for workpiece stability.

• Workpiece support extensions must always be secured and used during work.

- Replace table inlays when worn!

- Avoid overheating the saw teeth.

- When sawing plastic, avoid melting of the plastic. Use the correct saw blades for the material to be cut. Replace damaged or worn saw blades immediately. When the saw blade overheats, stop the machine. Allow the saw blade to cool down before using the machine again.

- Use only saw blades that are marked with an equal or higher rotational speed than the rotational speed specified on the electric tool.

• Always ensure that the saw is stable and secure.
