Care and Cleaning

How to Clean Frothing Nozzle

  1. Place large empty cup on Cup Rest with Frothing Nozzle directed toward the cup. Ensure there is water in Water Reservoir. Empty Milk Reservoir, replace Lid, and slide Milk Reservoir Assembly back onto machine. The Milk Reservoir Assembly must be in place to run the CLEAN cycle.

Discard contents of cup and Milk Reservoir. NOTE: To prevent Frothing Nozzle from clogging, remove Nozzle cover and clean at the end of each session of use.

How to Clean Milk Reservoir Assembly

Discard any remaining milk. Rinse and wash all parts of the Milk Reservoir Assembly thoroughly with warm soapy water. Rinse and dry well. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads.

NOTE: Unused milk can be refrigerated in Milk Reservoir Assembly.

  1. Use a twisting motion as you pull Tamping Tool up and away from coffee to "polish" puck. Keep tamped coffee below the MAX line inside Filter. Clean excess grounds from Portafilter to ensure proper fit under Brew Head and to avoid leaks.

WARNING Electrical Shock Hazard. Disconnect power before wiping exterior of unit or brew head. Do not immerse cord, plug, or machine in any liquid.

How to Clean Filters

Single-shot Filter and Double-shot Filter should be cleaned frequently to prevent blockage. Scrub the Filters with a scouring brush, then soak Filters in hot, soapy water for 15 minutes. Thoroughly rinse Filters and let air-dry.

General Cleaning

  1. Slide Portafilter without coffee into Brew Head and move Portafilter Locking Handle to 6(lock).

Tips for Making Espresso

  • For best results, use fresh-ground, dark espresso roast coffee.
  • If preground espresso coffee is used, store unused portion in an airtight container and keep in a cool, dark area for up to one week.
  • The grind of the coffee will affect the taste of the coffee and how the appliance works. If grind is too coarse, water will flow too fast through coffee and result in a weaker flavor. If grind is too fine, flavor may be too strong or bitter, and grounds may clog filter.
  • For hotter espresso, preheat Filter and Portafilter by first brewing water into cups for a few seconds and then emptying brewed water.

CAUTION

Burn Hazard. Filter and portafilter are hot.

  • Espresso beans may be ground in a coffee grinder. For best results, use Hamilton Beach Custom Grind™ Coffee Grinder or Hamilton Beach 2-14 Cup Burr Coffee Grinder on espresso setting. If grinding espresso in a store or using a burr mill, use a setting that is one to two notches coarser than the espresso setting.
  • Grind your espresso so that it looks gritty, like salt or sand. It is too fine if it looks like powder and feels like flour. If coffee is ground too fine, water will not flow through coffee.
  • Always use cold water to make coffee. Warm water or other liquids could cause damage to the appliance.
  • For best-tasting results, use filtered water or bottled water.

Troubleshooting

Espresso will not flow out.

  • Ensure water level in Water Reservoir is between the MIN and MAX lines. If Water Reservoir has run dry, Espresso Maker may need to be reprimed. Follow "Before First Use (Priming the Pump)" to reprime.
  • Ensure Water Reservoir has been fully inserted onto the Espresso Maker by aligning hook feature on back of machine.
  • Espresso grounds may be overpacked in Filter. Ensure espresso grounds do not exceed MAX line inside Single-Shot or Double-Shot Filter.
  • Ensure Filter is inserted properly into Portafilter by aligning the raised dimple on the side of the Filter with the cutout notch on the Portafilter.
  • Filter could be clogged. Always clean Filter after each use.
    • Coffee grounds are too fine. Use a coarser grind.

Espresso is too strong, bitter, or has no crema.

  • Too much ground coffee used. Ensure espresso grounds do not exceed MAX line inside Single-Shot or Double-Shot Filter. We recommend filling to 1/8 inch below the rim of the Filter (about 8 g for Single-Shot Filter or 15 g for Double-Shot Filter).
    • Coffee grounds are too fine. Use a coarser ground.

Espresso is too weak.

  • Use fresh-ground espresso coffee and firmly tamp grounds.
  • When using MANUAL mode, longer brew time produces weaker espresso. Recommended serving size per single-shot espresso is 1-1.5 oz. (29-44 mL), or for double-shot espresso 2-3 oz. (58-88 mL).
  • Coffee grounds may be too coarse. Ensure grounds used are espresso grounds, or coffee was ground to an espresso-size grind. Grind size should resemble sand.
  • Ensure there is sufficient ground coffee in Single-Shot or Double-Shot Filter.
  • Try a different brand or roast of coffee.

Espresso Maker is noisy when operating.

  • Espresso makers require high-pressure pumps, so it is normal for machine to be loud. However, if Water Reservoir does not contain water, attempting to brew will cause a loud noise. Water level in Water Reservoir should be between MIN and MAX lines. If Reservoir has run dry, machine may need to be reprimed. Follow "Before First Use (Priming the Pump)" to reprime.

Difficult to froth milk.

• Always use fresh, cold milk (skim milk is recommended).
• Always clean Frothing Nozzle after each use. See Care and Cleaning section.

Drip Tray overflows.

- Drip Tray has a Red Overflow Indicator that will rise when it needs to be emptied. Failure to empty Drip Tray could lead to it overflowing onto counter. When Red Overflow Indicator rises and becomes visible above Cup Rest surface, empty Drip Tray. Return Drip Tray and Cup Rest to machine.

Top 3 lights flashing.

  • Water Reservoir is empty. Ensure Water Reservoir is filled with cold water between the MIN and MAX fill lines.
    • Coffee grounds are too fine. Use a coarser grinder.

Bottom 6 lights flashing.

- Milk Reservoir Assembly is not in place. If brewing in CAPPUCCINO, LATTÉ or FROTH modes, ensure Milk Reservoir Assembly is correctly installed.
