5. Safety information
General power tool safety warnings
WARNING: Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations and specifications provided with this electric tool.
Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.
Save all warnings and instructions for future reference.
The term "power tool" in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.
1) Work area safety
a) Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.
2) Electrical safety
a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
b) Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
f) If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.
3) Personal safety
a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
b) Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as a dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
c) Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair and clothing away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
g) If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.
h) Do not let familiarity gained from frequent use of tools allow you to become complacent and ignore tool safety principles. A careless action can cause severe injury within a fraction of a second.
4) Power tool use and care
a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or remove the battery pack, if detachable, from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
d) Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
e) Maintain power tools and accessories. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool's operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
h) Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean and free from oil and grease.
Slippery handles and grasping surfaces do not allow for safe handling and control of the tool in unexpected situations.
5) Service
a) Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.
Further safety instructions
-
Never use damaged accessory tools. Check tool attachments such as grinding discs for chipping and cracks before each use. Once you have checked and used the tool attachment, ensure that you and all other persons in the vicinity remain outside the plane of the rotating tool attachment and allow the device to run for 1 min. at the maximum speed. Damaged tool attachments usually break during this test period.
-
The maximum speed of the accessory tool used must be at least as high as the maximum speed specified for the power tool. Accessories which rotate faster than the maximum permissible rate can break and throw pieces into the air.
-
Keep yourself and people nearby out of the plane of the rotating grinding disc. The protective hood is intended to protect the operator from fragments and accidental contact with the grinding wheel.
-
Grinding bodies may only be used for the recommended applications. For example: Never grind on the side surfaces of the grinding discs. Grinding on the side surfaces can cause the grinding disc to break and fly apart.
Always use undamaged clamping flanges of the correct size and shape for the grinding disc selected by you. Suitable flanges support the grinding disc and reduce the danger of the grinding disc breaking.
- The external diameter and thickness of the accessory tool used must comply with the dimensions of the power tool. Incorrectly dimensioned accessory tools cannot be sufficiently shielded or controlled.
- Grinding discs and flanges must fit exactly on your electrical tool's grinding spindle. Insertion tools that do not fit exactly on your electrical tool's grinding spindle rotate unevenly, vibrate very strongly and can cause a loss of control.
- Wear personal protective equipment. Depending on application, use face shield, safety goggles or safety glasses. Where appropriate, wear a dust mask, hearing protection, protective gloves or a special apron that will keep small grinding and material particles away from you. Eye protection must protect against flying debris generated by various applications. Dust or breathing masks must filter the dust generated during use. Prolonged exposure to high intensity noise may cause hearing loss.
- Ensure that other people remain at a safe distance from your workspace. Anyone who enters the workspace must wear personal protective equipment. Fragments of workpiece or of a broken accessory may fly away and cause injury beyond immediate area of operation.
- Keep the power cable away from rotating insertion tools. If you lose control of the device, the connection cable can be severed or caught and your arm pulled into the rotating tool attachment.
- Clean the ventilation slits of your power tool regularly. The engine fan draws dust into the housing and a strong accumulation of metal dust can cause electrical hazards.
- Do not use the electric tool in the vicinity of combustible materials. Do not use the electric tool if it is on a flammable surface such as wood. Sparks could ignite these materials.
- Do not use any accessory tools which require liquid coolant. The use of water or other coolants may result in an electric shock.
- Keep mains cables and extension cables away from the grinding disc. In case of damage or cutting, immediately pull the mains plug out of the socket. Do not touch the lead until it is disconnected from the mains. There is a danger of electric shock.
- The replacement of the plug or the connection cable must always be carried out by the manufacturer of the electric tool or its customer service in order to avoid hazards.
Warning! This power tool generates an electromagnetic field during operation. This field can impair active or passive medical implants under certain conditions. In order to prevent the risk of serious or deadly injuries, we recommend that persons with medical implants consult with their physician and the manufacturer of the medical implant prior to operating the power tool.
6. Residual risks
The machine has been built according to the state-of-the-art and the recognised technical safety requirements. However, individual residual risks can arise during operation.
- Health hazard due to electrical power, with the use of improper electrical connection cables.
- Furthermore, despite all precautions having been met, some non-obvious residual risks may still remain.
- Residual risks can be minimised if the "Safety information" and the "Proper use" together with the operating manual as a whole are observed.
- Avoid accidental starting of the machine: the operating button may not be pressed when inserting the plug in an outlet. Use the tool attachment that is recommended in this operating manual. This is how to ensure that your machine provides optimum performance.
- Keep your hands away from the work area, when the machine is in operation.

- Wait until the grinding disc is at a standstill
- Pull out the mains plug
Grinding all cutting links (Fig. 5 - 7)
To grind a cutting edge of the cutting links, proceed as follows:
- Set the sharpening angle: By loosening the locking nut (9), turn the chain tensioning unit (11) to the required sharpening angle on the scale (8) and tighten the locking nut (9) again (Fig. 5).
The cutting edges of the cutting links are normally ground at an angle of between 30 and 35 degrees. For exact details, contact your saw chain manufacturer. - Release the tightening lever (7) and place the saw chain in the chain guide bar (6). The cutting edges must face the grinding disc (4) (Fig. 6).
- Fold down the chain stop (13) and pull the saw chain back until the cutting link to be sharpened rests against the chain stop (13) (Fig. 6).
- For exact alignment, pull the grinding head (16) against the cutting link. Adjust the distance by means of the adjusting screw for chain stop (12) so that the grinding disc (4) touches the cutting link. In addition, regulate the grinding depth with the adjusting screw for chain stop (12). (Fig. 6)
-
Tighten the tightening lever (7) saw chain is fixed (Fig. 6).
-
Adjust the depth stop using the depth stop adjusting screw (5) so that the grinding disc (4) touches the tooth base (Fig. 7). Attention!
Do not set the depth stop too low, otherwise there is a danger of the chain breaking during operation.
- Switch on the device and carefully sand the cutting edge of the cutting link by moving the handle (1) on the grinding head (2) downwards.
- To transport the chain onwards, switch the device off. Release the tightening lever (7) and fix the next chain link in the chain guide bar (6) using the adjusted chain stop (13) and the tightening lever (7).
Attention!
First sharpen the teeth on one side of the chain. Then adjust the sharpening angle and sharpen the teeth on the other side.
Attention!
Mark the first cutting link, e.g. with a chalk line. This way you avoid sharpening cutting links twice.
Setting the depth gauge distance
If all the cutting links' cutting edges are sharpened, your saw chain is sharp, but it may not cut.
Therefore, there must always be a depth gauge distance (= distance between depth gauge and cutting edge). As a rule, it is 0.5 - 0.8mm For exact details, contact your saw chain manufacturer.

Too great a depth gauge distance increases the risk of kick-back when sawing.
If the depth gauge distance is too small, you may have to file off the distance with a file according to the specifications of your saw chain.
Make sure you round off the front edge of the depth gauge with a file. The original shape of the cutting link must be preserved.

12. Maintenance
Warning! Pull out the mains plug before carrying out any adjustments, maintenance or repair work!
